So, if I were to put on my coffee snob hat on, I would like to remind you of a few things in terms of Philz place in terms of third wave coffee- This is not third wave coffee (2.5 in my opinion): - The roasting is a bit more roastier and dark than many of the new "third wave" joints - They use cream with their coffee. Really damn good cream... but still. - Their pour method is closer to pulled tea than pour over. Having said all my reservations and taking off my coffee snob hat- I give Philz 5 stars. Because I'm not evaluating Philz on being 3rd wave. I'm evaluating it on execution. I'm tempted to play down Philz to people because it gets associated with third wave coffee... and it's not! But if I were to evaluate Philz for Philz sake, and not on people's misconceptions of the coffee... then okay. I love this place. Yes. They make it darker. But that's the point of their cream. It's probably the highest quality cream I've ever put in my coffee. It makes this Asian bloat with farty internal combustion... but it tastes so good that I don't mind it. The coffee almost tastes like ice cream when creamer is in it. It's freaking delicious- And the internal coffee snob in me is scoffing at me for liking creamer in my coffee. But I just have to say it- it's amazing. Service here is great, just like any other philz... but what sets this Philz apart from others in this quickly expanding chain? I just love this space. Most other Philz, my main complaint is its lack of seating! And this place has many tables with many plugs around it... which even when really crowded, isn't TOO hard to find a spot to sit. On top of that, the place has high ceilings, which are the ticket to favor in my yelp reviewer eyes- I feel like I can sit there for a long time and work because I don't feel cramped by the ceilings. (Note- to those of you who want to work in silence, it's not the best place- it's a little too noisy there). Who will you find here almost every morning between 8 & 9:15? Me! Yeah it's that good. When I first heard about Philz I thought "Whatever, it's just coffee." Then I tried it one day and turned into a junkie! I started with the New Manhattan "sweet and creamy" and then ventured into the rest of the menu. Pretty soon I dumped the sweet and creamy style and went "pure" by ordering everything black or maybe with a tad bit of sweetener. I'm glad and disappointed at the same time that a Sunnyvale location opened up. It's was nice when the only Philz in the South Bay was in Palo Alto. It was unique. Since Cupertino location opened up and now Sunnyvale, Philz has started to become over-rated - just like Starbucks. I do like the setup of the Sunnyvale location though. Overall Impression: It's kinda scary how much better than Starbuck's these guys are. On second thought, it's a very very scary thought. Cost: $3.50 for a small and $4.50 for a large, made however you want. Taste: I tried the new manhatten blend and it was divine. It was a light roast, as opposed to medium or heavy, and boy oh boy that hit the spot just right. I might have to religiously come here every week to try their other blends. I usually have Jacob's Wonderbar which is a lovely dark roast, creamy and sweet with honey. My favorite afternoon pick me up is the iced Mint Mojito, you've got to try this. It is very refreshing on a hot day and wakes you right up during the 3 pm sleepies. For non-coffee drinkers who still need a caffeine boost, get the yerba mate. You can add cream and sweetness to this as well. Philz has almond milk, soy milk and vanilla soy if you can't handle cream/dairy. Read for the really bad thing about this place, but before that - yes - amazing coffee and YES, as typical for a philz, the staff is *outstanding* This place is crawling with Sunnyvale cops. My review is to serve as a heads up. My therapy is in telling you the story. 1) 5:45 AM, pouring rain. Like many, I pulled into the "loading only zone' right next to the door. You know.. no one around, pouring rain, I have to get coffee for my team who are all having to work early. The parking lot is a few hundred feet away. Cop issued me a 53 dollar citation and not one f*&^ was given. The guy was a weasel about it too, had me a ticket in 30 seconds flat and was clearly uncomfortable being caught. Sunnyvale PD. 2) This time, as I slow for pedestrians right in front of the parking lot, my boss texts me and to get the phone - so funny - I had to unclip my taut seatbelt. And yes, BAM, lights go *intantly* and I get pulled over. He kindly said he would save 200-300 dollars for the seatbelt, but issued me a ticket for the cell phone usage at 100 bucks. So, if you're a incorrigible law breaker like me, taking illegal short cuts in the rain, etc - PLEASE BE CAREFUL and don't give these guys reasons to give more money to their generous pensions. (you might not know, but an officer in the bay area makes 6 figures. And I don't mean like low 6 figures, when you calculate in their CA-bankrupting pension, benefits, and early retirement, total compensation is 300,000-500,000 a year. google public salaries of San Jose employees kept up to date by the mercury news for confirmation) read more

I'm never nearby a Philz, so I was super excited when I was having lunch nearby to pick some up. I ordered the Instanbul Treat iced with honey and cream. Apparently, the Instanbul Treat is served without honey and cream. But if you like sweet drinks, you should get both! It has an earthy taste to it - it ALMOST tastes like the chai iced tea latte from Starbucks but much better and lighter. This drink also tastes less sugary and you can taste more of the flavor than the Starbucks drink. I would highly recommend it. They also put mint on top. My coworker got the same drink but the hot version. For some odd reason, it tasted so different than mine. She added honey and cream as well. The drink was $3 for a small and is worth every penny. I always get the Mint Mojito sweet and creamy but the last few times I've asked for less cream and sugar to cut back on my sugar levels, but it doesn't taste as good. Since I only get it maybe about once every 3 or 4 months, I'll just treat myself and get it sweet and creamy next time. It took me a few try's until I started to like Philz. My friends from the South Bay always RAVE about this place and to be honest when Philz first came I was excited too until I tried it and I wasn't willing to give it another try until one of my friends literally dragged me back and poured different types of coffees down my throat. What I've tried so far: -Mint Mojito: 3/5 I believe this is Philz more popular drink, it was the first thing I tried at Philz that turned me off to it. I think I just don't like the idea of coffee and mint together. -Dancing Water: 2/5 I definitely did not like dancing water, the chocolate flavor was far too much for me, I like the taste he coffee more than the chocolate. -Tesora: 4/5 Tesora is my favorite! I like that there's no chocolate flavor, it's more of a buttery slight nutty flavor to it. The reason I like Philz is I feel the baristas are all so passionate about coffee, they make it to order and this may sounds corny but I feel like they make it with love. When you order they ask: -Level of sweetness -Level of creaminess & props to them for not writing it down, and for having so much trust in their customers. You order your coffee than you walk down to pay and wait again for your drink. When you get your drink the barista doesn't put the cap on, they leave it so you're able to try it. If it's not 100% to your liking they'll add more cream or sugar for you. It's great!! I'm a huge Philz fan. I take all my friends who haven't been there (very few remain, because I literally make all my appointments at Philz) and I go as frequently as I can. Living in SF, Philz is a 10-15 minute walk from my place so it really depends on how lazy I am/how bus work is but when I found out that Philz opened a Sunnyvale location, I was ELATED. My parents live back in Sunnyvale and whenever my sister and I visit, we drag them out 20 minutes to Cupertino to go to Philz. Now we can literally walk there! So much happiness. Decor is a little different than most Philz location. A little more modern, upscale looking and less philzy. The baristas are just as accommodating and nice as the previous baristas I've encountered at other Philz locations. Unfortunately, I think the place has a few flavor quirks to work out. My first time visiting, the low fat version came out basically low fat. I did not taste any cream and I had to ask to remake. The second time I came, I asked for light ice, and my cup was overflowing because there was so much ice. The third time, I was hoping for the usual Philz perfection. I had an ecstatic iced coffee, low fat version medium sweet. I understand that most baristas have a slightly different scale of what medium sweet is, so I did have to ask for them to remake because it was absolutely too sweet. But even after the fix, the ecstatic did not taste right. I'm not sure if burnt is the right word to describe it, but it definitely did not have the flavor of the previous iced coffees I've had at Philz. I'm hoping this is a beginning phase, and the flavors of the coffee will improve/get up to par with the other locations. 4 stars because it's Philz and it's right next to my house and i still love the coffee. To order, wait in the line across from the baristas, order your drink, pay at the cashier and then wait till you hear your drink/name called! Sunnyvale location is right across the Caltrain. There's a public parking lot across from Philz. This location is pretty spacious (at least compared to the SJ location which is like a hole in the wall) and the baristas are always friendly. I could gush about Philz coffee for days, let's just say it's amazing and leave it at that. What I want to tell is a story about the staff here at this new location. This new Philz spot is right next to the Sunnyvale Caltrain station, so there will likely be countless customers coming through on a time crunch. One gentleman was waiting for a breakfast sandwich when I came in, and soon there after left without it because his train pulled into the station across the street. One of the workers behind the counter noticed this, and when his breakfast sandwich was ready about 30-45 seconds later he wrapped it up and literally booked it out the door, hauled it across the street and through the massive train depot courtyard to catch the guy before he got on his train. Too many places try too hard to win customer loyalty with fake smiles, awkwardly forced small talk, gimmicks, promotions, etc. really it comes down to selling a good product and making sure you'll be taken care of if things don't go right. Updating my review since I tried some of the teas here and they are delicious! The Istanbul Treat is a mix of green and black tea with spices and mint. It has got such a great taste, one that you won't be able to find anywhere else. The Yerba Mate is a great choice if you're in the mood for an herbal tea and trying to avoid the caffeine. It has s smoky like taste to it and seems like it has a bit thicker taste compared to the Istanbul treat. I've heard that there are lots of health benefits from drinking this tea too so that's awesome. I normally get the teas with light milk and honey & it's always a perfect mixture. On January 23rd, 10:13a. It was my first time ever coming to a Philz Coffee. I've heard such good things, and read about the reviews. I was disappointed in the disrespect I experienced at this location. The staff wasn't at all pleasant, one staff went as far to mock my sister who was not satisfied in the level of sweetness in her coffee. Instead of just apologizing and asking how to make it better, the female in the plaid red/black top replied back telling my sister how to properly order it. I heard my sister specifically asked for it to be extra sweet. The staff just weren't so cheerful what so ever. As a tourist, I wouldn't come back to visit this specific location. Especially have these two baristas prepare my drink. The girl barista loudly said without any care, "somebody's not happy with their drink" when re-making my sisters beverage, right in front of my sister and I. That was very rude, and I think that our drink should have been refunded for the very unwelcome attitude the barista showed to us on your visit. Only reason there wasn't a manager involved to rectify the rude situation is because this was a family trip, and we had other things to visit. I hope this girl gets talked to for her rude unwelcome behavior for treating customers/guest like this is not all appropriate or kind. Would you want me treating your family/friend like this? I highly doubt it and don't at all agree hiring an employee like that would have customers happy. Your job is to be kind and make everyone feel comfortable at your coffee shop. It only takes less than a minute to interact with the customer and that 1 minute can make a great impression. Instead, you mocked my family for the 2-3 min while re-making the drink. That's not cool. I really love coffee. I don't know much about brewing a good cup of coffee and I don't know if the "one cup at a time" is a gimmick or not, but geez, these people can brew a good cup of coffee. The Mint Mojito Iced Coffee is popular here; it sounds disgusting at first, but is surprisingly good. But, I find myself always heading over here for a Turkish coffee-- yum! While exploring downtown Sunnyvale for the first time, I came across this Philz Coffee location and was blown away by how modern it was. Nothing perks me up like the thought of Philz coffee! When I'm not in the mood for an espresso drink, the coffee at Philz is a great alternative. And this location is a great addition to downtown Sunnyvale. It's my favorite Philz location. The coffee is customizable from the bean to the temperature of the drink to the levels of brown sugar and heavy whipping cream. Yes, you read that right: heavy whipping cream. During the summer, the iced coffees are great and I find that the dark roasts lend themselves to being better iced. Since I'm also a chocolate lover, any of the roasts with chocolate notes are my favorite. I prefer the Jacob's Wonderbar and the Decaf Ethiopian, iced. For hot coffee, I like to get the medium roasts...so far, Silken Splendor and Tesora are winners. The mocha tesora is also something to try but can be a bit rich. I've also had breakfast here along with the occasional cookie. Their pastries are really quite top notch with my favorites being the bacon cheddar scone and the kouign aman. A lot of people go to this place for the mint mojito, but my #1 choice here is the Ecstatic Iced Coffee. It's a mixed blend of all of their coffees, and MAN did it jack me up! When they ask if you want it sweet and creamy, they mean it. Everytime I get the ecstatic iced coffee, it's always on point and tastes great. The only thing I can say as a warning to people is to make sure to stir your coffee if you get it iced...so that your drink is cold all the way through! This specific location is super cute as well. OMG, I've never tasted such delicious black coffee before. Their Philtered Soul is heavenly. It doesn't even taste bitter, and It definitely gives me the caffeine kick I want! I've also tried their black tea with mint! This isn't on the menu, but I asked if they could prepare it for me, and they were very flexible with giving me a custom made drink! Not packing on the sugar like Frappuccinos. I would not recommend, however, The Jamaican Blue Mountain. It tasted like your regular black coffee with sugar. There are only so many Philz locations, and the coffee is $4.50 a pop. So I can't just get it off every corner like starbucks. What I like about this location is that it's not crowded and if you all go, I will have to wait on line and hover over people, waiting for a seat and were in-ear phones -- the way I do in the Cupertino location. Here are some Philz-newbie hints: The coffee is great. As good as you will find anywhere. But be aware: This is espresso-no land. No espresso machines in sight, Instead, they do a pourover, which is a carefully timed drip coffee. Choose according to roast. I like medium or light roasts because the coffee's liveliest flavors vaporize with greater roasts. If you're not sure, start with a Tesoro, which I think is the most popular, to start. But note the little icons -- there's one with mint, one with hazelnut. If you hate flavored coffee, avoid those. I buy my coffee beans here. Fresh, very well roasted. Not inexpensive but not as pricey as some and note that these are 16-ounce bags, not the 12-oz you find some places. There is one variety on special each month, that's $2 less. Unless you take your coffee black, ask for medium-medium (some sugar, some cream) to start and adjust from there. Find the line for ordering (not well marked at all the locations) and order, Then leave the line and go pay. Tell them what you ordered - they trust you. Then wait and your coffee server will have it for you. Takes a while, worth the wait. read more

Since when is Philz not worthy of 5 stars?! I could rave on and on about their drinks, and the quality is consistent at every location. Staff is cheerful and friendly, coffee is outstanding, and even their baked goods are pretty tasty (the quiche is my go-to when I need something to sop up all that caffeine). I really have no complaints for this location other than it can get a little chilly inside (AC is OP man) so bring a jacket if you plan on hanging out for a while. There's not much to say except that Philz is one of the best coffee shops to exist ever.. and if you're from the Bay, you already know! If you're from out of town, then yes you should get a cup of coffee from here! This location is the first in Sunnyvale. It's conveniently close to the caltrain station so you can quickly grab a cup before you head on your train or upon arrival. It also has a decent amount of seating for parties of 2-4. There's one big communal table with a ton of outlets, so laptops are welcome :) The baristas are always super friendly and one guy even remembered my order after only one visit!
