Pho 79 is my "go to" for Pho in Richmond. As far as broth goes, I prefer Pho 79 over the ever popular Mekong down the road. This is a small, family owned establishment that serves up good food with super reasonable prices. It's an old converted McDonalds that certainly could use a facelift but you can tell that it's meant to be a simple paper napkin spot. The fresh summer rolls here are my favorite. I've always received them fresh, chilled and double wrapped to keep all the noodle/meaty goodness from falling out. I am a fan of the Pho Ti, but my favorite thing to order is the beef rice vermicelli salad - with added fried tofu. The veggies are crisp and delicious and the meat is grilled perfectly. As someone who rarely goes out for lunch - I always get a little nervous that I'm not going to have time to finish my meal/I'm going to be practicing for the next hot dog eating challenge. Yes, yes, and yes. I've had pho from a few places now and I am by no mean a pho connoisseur, but whoa, this place is awesome! We've had their fresh spring rolls (which have shrimp and delicious marinated chicken), fried eggrolls, pho, glass noodle dishes, rice dishes and vietnamese coffee. The pho broth is to die for and they have always given a good amount of meat, more than I'm used to seeing from other places around here. I could live off of the fresh spring rolls with the peanut sauce. I also have dreams of the pork rice dishes haha. But seriously, we've ordered from here 3 times... this week. The Vietnamese coffee will surely wake you up and has that strong, robust flavor you'd expect. Great prices as well. So my second week in RVA, I had a craving for Pho being from Atlanta I've had some dam good Pho. But this please had pho so I tried it was very plain. What I did not like , 1, The basil roll was to dry and it had more Veg inside them the pork and shrimp . 2.The pho is like dishwater no flavor not enough meat, the basil was old and black, 3. This was the second Pho shop we tried after a week's worth of work in Richmond. In direct comparison to Pho So 1(Vietnam 1), I'd say this shop was not as good, and we ordered pretty much the same dishes (Pho Tai, Spring Roll, Fresh Shrimp Roll, and Red Bean Coconut drink). The Pho Tai broth was a bit sour (Not due to the minimal lime I added), though there was a bountiful helping of beef. Both the rolls weren't anything special, but decent. And to finish off, the Red Bean drink was ok. Atmosphere was typical of Pho shops, but the workers were smoking indoors and next to the cashier. No downgrade based on this, though. Overall, a decent meal and the food would satisfy any Pho craving. But in comparison to Vietnam 1, I'd head there first. read more

We walked in and there was a lady at a table near the register sitting cross legged with her bare foot in her hand. She quickly popped her bare foot back into her dirty shoe. We first made eye contact with her foot, then her face. She sheepishly grabbed our menus, waters, and utensils...without washing her hands. Called ahead to see if they had vegetarian options for there Pho(never been to a Pho noodle house that wouldn't) they said they did. We order spring rolls and some waters. The spring rolls came with shrimp in them. We told the water we didn't want any meat or any kind in it. We start asking about there pho options. They won't do a vegetarian version with there pho. They have a good menu complete with a mix of Pho, rice dishes and even a kid's menu. Also, their Pho bowls come in three sizes - S, L, and Super Size. We each had a bowl of Pho, I tried a shredded chicken style prepared in chicken broth. I had never had Pho other than the traditional varieties so I figured why not. Each of the dishes were tasty, our only complaint was that the broth wasn't as flavorful as those you would find at other places. I went there a while back, to me the broth is decent, not the best but not bad at all. Some of Mu Vietnamese friends like their noodles better than other pho restaurants. I went here around 11am for takeout and ordered the #14 Pho and a spring roll . Walking in everyone was really nice and it only took maybe 10 mins for everything to be ready . The pho was just ok . Every time I go there, it's a great experience! The wait staff is courteous and super-attentive. The food is excellent, and authentic. My best friend's mother is 100% Vietnamese and she says that this place is fantastic! I love her cooking, but if she wants a night off, this is where she goes! I got the super bowl with all the meats. They have regular, large, and super bowl choices for the sizes of your pho bowl. I'm from nova and have eaten at probably 15 different pho places and I regularly eat pho. I would definitely say this one is a contender. It's definitely above par in my book. read more
