I've been to several locations and this is by far the best. 1 - because it's so close to my house. 2 - yummy pho and even yummier bubble tea. 3 - affordable. 4 - the staff is always so welcoming and bubbly. I usually get the large #1 to go and it is always ready within minutes! Don't be shy about asking for extra anything, they're happy to do it! Always the go to for a date night in. Didn't come for the Pho. I'm pretty sure they are the same owners of the Pho 79 near Pembroke so we were sure that the Pho was just as good as it was at the other location. We came for Hot Pot. Lau Thai Hot Pot. The presentation begins when they place a propane burner in the middle of your table. Then they bring out a huge steel bowl filled with a wonderfully spicy Thai soup. Tangy, sour, and just spicy enough. The bowl has an extended brim filled with a bunch of raw meat, squid, shrimp, fish, noodles, and raw veggies. You dunk your meat and veggies in the boiling broth to let it cook, put some noodles in your individual bowl, retrieve your meat and veg, top off your bowl with the broth, and slurp away. Repeat as many times as you want. And if you haven't done a hot pot before, you don't know what you're missing. The hot pot is the most expensive dish on the menu ($32), but it's a ridiculous amount of food. I'm pretty sure it's made for a few people or a small family but if you and a good friend are hungry, this is an awesome thing to order. And be forewarned- this dish can get messy. I was spilling soup from the main bowl to my soup bowl, dropping veggies on the table, using my hands to tear the noodles apart, etc. I was also blinded by intense heat of the boiling soup inches away from my body, not to mention having the propane burner set at a constant blaze right in front of you. The main soup bowl/burner contraption also sits up pretty high on the table so there are times that you have to stand up a bit to stir the soup and serve yourself. Like I said, this dish is messy. It's almost dangerous. But it is so freaking delicious. We spent a good hour and a half going to town on that hot pot. It's never-ending. I'm not kidding. We actually almost finished the pot and they offered to give us more soup and more noodles. We said yes and a minute later the pot was refilled and more noodles were brought out. I was in sweet-spicy-seafood-meat-noodle-soup heaven. We had to stop halfway through the second pot because we got full to the neck with pure Thai soup bliss. Try this dish with a friend or two when you come here. The Pho here is probably good, but the hot pot is amazing. Don't be afraid to get a little messy; just ask for extra napkins. read more

I like this location a lot more than the other ones because the ambiance is much classier than the other Pho shops. I would even argue that the food quality is much better. Today I ordered the grilled chicken along with their fresh spring rolls. Oh it was so good. The chicken was tender and flavorful and came with just enough rice to make the Asian in me happy without putting me in a food coma. The only thing I wish was that the sauce with the spring rolls had peanuts in it. This place is so comforting... almost too comforting that I didn't want to go back to the office! Pretty nice decor and friendly service. But I didn't think the pho were great at all. Broth was bit too salty and noodles weren't that chewy. The other dish we had were better though so I gave it 3 stars overall. Plus they honored the coupon we had so for the price it was not a bad experience. Its worth a try but definitely get their rice plate instead of pho in my opinion. Perhaps I'm just too snobby when it comes to pho haha had many different pho whenever I go travel and unfortunately this one didn't live up to my expectation. Came back here today after a doctors appointment. Perfect day for pho rainy and wet. I went in craving pho but so many menu options and having had some last night also ( yea I'm addicted). I decided to try one of the clay pots. I choose the Caramelized short rib clay pot. I imagined it was going to be fall of the bone tender when it came to the table, when it arrived it looked good but when I started eating it I just was not feeling it. The description to me made it sound like it was going to be very tender and it just was not. One of the servers asked me how it was I was honest and said I kinda wish I had just got a pho bowl that I was craving but I wanted to try something new. One of the owners came over Hen, she really listened to my opinion regarding the dish and what I was expecting compared to what I got, she immediately asked me if I'd like something else I choose a different pho then usual with beef tendon and strips of beef. It was good, just what I wanted. Made it nice and hot. At the end of my meal Hen came over and adjusted my bill more then I was expecting. This was very generous of her and made an impression on me because I was just expecting the pork plate to be comped not almost the whole meal. I will be back again to feed my pho addiction. I have never been to this Pho 79 location before but was pleasantly surprised when I walked in! Apparently they just finished renovating the restaurant and changed the name to "Viet Bistro". So as you can tell by the name it has a classier atmosphere than other pho shops I have been to! My boyfriend and I shared the spring rolls and wings as appetizers and ordered pork and beef banh mi's for our main meal. The spring rolls were cut like sushi which I have never seen before, and I think I prefer picking up the spring rolls with my hand rather than chopsticks! The wings were sooooo so so good! I absolutely recommend getting them to everyone that comes here. They are crispy and fresh, and come with sides of lime and a great lemon pepper seasoning that you can add on yourself. I preferred the pork banh mi over the beef, but both were still very delicious! The pickled veggies on the soft baguette were my favorite part. The banh mi meal which is less than $7 comes with a side of shrimp chips and a chicken broth type soup (such a great price for all that food!) We had a great waiter, the ambiance was nice, and food was good! Will be back for sure. read more

After a solid 15 visits for both lunch and dinner I finally decided to write my review! Im blown away by everything I eat here or maybe I am not used to it but man do I love it. I have ordered about 10 different items on the menu so far and have loved everything to date. Calamari is excellent, wings are good, shrimp wontons are excellent, not so impressed with the egg rolls I was expecting 4 not 2. Pho so far every dish has knocked it out of the park, huge portions with more than enough food. Other dishes such as the sizzling beef over rice(not sure the name) was excellent, my gf loves it. The decor is fantastic with 2 large plasmas TVs 65"( I think), which you can see from all areas of the restaurant. They went above and beyond designing this place so it didn't look like something out of the 80's referring to every other Asian restaurant which 95% of the time is horrible. I would call it Asian Contemporary with a cheap upscale feel, kinda like when you install the fake granite countertops in your house to get that look of its nicer than it actually is. The bathrooms were super nice with all up to date fixtures and sinks and such, good job whoever designed them and always super clean. The staff is kind of hit or miss, I feel like whoever is training or hiring needs to do a better job. Seems like half the staff knows whats going on and the other doesn't, but my drink seems to always be full. I do notice when they are busy it seems like its a free for all with wait staff, no one has a designated section, everyone is helping everyone and it seems like I interact with at least 3-4 employees every time I am there. In Hampton Roads there are no 24 hour Pho (Vietnamese Noodles) restaurants, and by far Pho 79 is the one I go to most often. The nice thing about Pho 79 is they have various locations in the 757. I usually go to the one close to Town Center in Virignia Beach off the boulevard, but if I have the chance I love going to this location in the Hiltop area. I love the Hiltop location because of the design and atmosphere of the inside. The inside is designed with contemporary and modern structural designs while still incorporating Asian decorations. It has an upscale and chic feel to it on the inside. I also love that it's next to Trader Joe's and makes for a good date night location when we want to explore after eating. This location is always consistent with service and quality of food. I have never had to wait for a table and in regards to food and promptness, orders are usually put in and are set out to eat within a half hour time frame. The good thing about eating at Pho 79, is that if you need a place to get in and get out its perfect. At the same time if you need a place to eat when having a bad cold, sinuses, or just want to sit and relax with friends and loved ones with warm, hot, soup, you can't go wrong. To start as an appetizer we order the Gõi Cun. It is 2 fresh spring rolls with shrimp and pork and severed with peanut butter sauce. For lunch/dinner I usually order one of two things: Pho Nom, Gân, Sách: This is my favorite and is so delicious, but you have to be open minded to eat everything that it contains. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who is picky. This noodle soup has flank steak, soft tendon, and bible tripe. I top mine with Sriracha sauce (red) , hoisin sauce (dark), a little jalapeño, bean sprouts, 1 mint leaf , and lime. It's delicious. My husband introduced me this adventurous selection and I have not been disappointed. If I'm a little under the weather and want something simple, yet delicious I like to also order the Pho Gà. For those who are trying pho for the first time and are hesitant, I think this is a really safe, and delicious option. This is like a chicken noodle soup, and has chicken broth and shredded chicken. When I order this soup I usually just put bean sprouts and don't put any sauces. The good thing is that the lime, bean sprouts, jalapeño, and mint leaves are served on a separate plate and you can put as much or as little as you want on your bowl. The same goes with sauces as well! Sometimes I even take a mint leaf and put that and a lime inside my water with lemon for a fresh and refreshing side to my meal. The food at Pho 79 at Hiltop is always consistent and the service and atmosphere is always great. In the winter we go at least every two weeks and in the summer every now and then. My husband usually pays a dollar more and gets a Large bowl and I usually get a small and let him finish mine. Pho-real, this place is the real deal. They also have a military discount, but you have to ask your server at the end. You won't be disappointed! read more

Ate here for the first time today. I'm a long-time fan of Vietnamese cuisine. Having recently moved to VA Beach, I have been anxious to find places to get my fix for Vietnamese food. Today's experience did not disappoint. I started with the fresh rolls. These are the famous appetizers rolled in rice paper and stuffed with rice noodles, shrimp, pork, lettuce, and herbs. I did not notice any herbs in mine today, but these can vary from place to place. I prefer them with cilantro, Thai basil, or mint, but these were still delicious. The peanut dipping sauce was perfect. My main course was menu item B1. I know most folks come for the Pho, but I am a vermicelli bowl addict. The B1 dish has a grilled skewer of beef, chicken, and pork served over rice noodles with a fresh salad of cuke, bean sprouts, lettuce, and carrot. They had a nice big sprig of Thai basil on top as well. You can flavor this dish how you like with sriracha, hoisin, various chili pastes, and fish sauce. This was one of the best vermicelli dishes I have ever had. The pork and chicken were my favorite and I may make either of those my regular dish when I come back. The meat was flavored and grilled perfectly. Service was prompt and friendly. This place will be going into my rotation for sure. read more

We ate in. The servers clothing smelled like fresh laundry. Staff wore masks and had minimal contact. Ordered P1 and it came with a plate of fresh add-ins. I prefer younger basil. Ours was older and had bloomed and tasted a bit like licorice. Overall the broth was well developed. The meat was tender and cooked in the broth right in front of me - pink to gray to light brown. My daughter ordered P4 without the brisket. Her meat was "super tender" and "melted in my mouth." She ordered the pineapple bubble tea and it came frozen. An imitation pineapple slushee made her happy on a 98 degree day. Pho is just so satisfying. And we were not disappointed. read more

Hidden Gem in Virginia Beach. Excellent food and CLEAN! Went here last night with my wife at her request, I'm pretty picky when it comes to Vietnamese and Thai places, so this review (for me at least) is a pretty big deal. We were sat pretty quickly, there was only 3 other couples there too. Odd for a Friday and for this place because it's pretty awesome. Our waiter really didn't speak english. Like. At all. Asking for a soda was impossible. Eventually just said "DIET" and the light came on. Super nice guy though and kept our drinks full the entire dinner (and not in the creepy way some foreign places do it where they STARE) Ordered Lemongrass Tofu Stir Fry, got it in a decent time on a loud sizzling hot plate, and wow, everything in it, from the bell peppers to the tomatoes, and the white onions tasted like they were cut up and put in the stir fry. Incredibly fresh. 10/10 on the freshness. So I'm a meat eater, wifes a vegetarian, but I just love tofu, not as a substitute, just love it for being so versatile. And while this is NOT the best tofu I've had in my life, it's still wayyyy up there. Presentation was also gorgeous. everything about it! As a stir fry, I'd normally expect some amount of oil, but this actually tasted extremely great and light on the oil. I would DEFINITELY return here. read more

Where do I start? I received a less than Luke warm reception when I sat down to order a drink and take out. They basically threw two menus at me and walked away and didn't come back for 10 minutes. Apparently if I had been the 20 something brunette who was flirting with one of the waiters I would have gotten better service. He came over with a ball cap on, REALLY, and explained the whole menu to her in detail. The food was mediocre at best. If they had treated me as well as they had treated the girl who was flirting with the ball cap guy, maybe I'd give them another chance. I don't need them to flirt with me, but maybe asking if I'd ever been there or if I understood the menu would have been nice. But, obviously, they don't need the business! I won't return. This was probably my worse dining experience in the longest time. The list goes on from the warm Thai tea, to having to return 2 sodas due to them being extremely flat and undrinkable. When we arrived we were the first few guests, but by the time everyone's food came out, which happened at completely different times, the restaurant was full and the staff was clearly unprepared. One person in our party did not receive her banh mi until everyone was finished with their food and sitting around. Best ever phô and appetizers as well! My brother and I decided to head here after a long day at work. We were pleasantly greeted by our host and waiter. He was very cordial and asked us how our day went. Now that's top-level customer service with !!! He offered us the HaPpY Hour special of half-priced wings and fried calamari... we said sure, why not? Well, we have never had the most tastiest calamari and wings in such a long time! Blew our tastebuds away!!! Sure the calamari looked different from the usual rings (looked like short fries), but they had our tastebuds begging for more! They were seasoned with a citrusy peppered seasoning and served with a lime wedge! The wings we're phenomenal! They were plump, juicy and packed with lemony-lime, peppery flavor, similar to Thai seasoning! The decor was nice and subdued, very calming...a nice quiet environment in which to unwind and dine after a very busy day. The phô was great! Overall, this is the go to place for phô and appetizers! Very slow service. 2 waiters at 1pm. The lady at the bar looked at me a couple of times and didn't ask me anything. She was only making drinks and sitting people in tables. They care more about people on the tables than people at the bar. It took them more than 12 minutes to take my order to go and the man next to me asked for his check since I got here and he's just got it. They only have 5 tables busy. I tries this place for lunch one day and have since been back twice, the interior is inviting and warm a small bar by the door gives me thoughts of happy hours to come. They have a nice array of lunch specials easy on the wallet and bingo the food! My go to have been the appetizer pho your choice of protein and 2 spring (or egg) rolls, more than enough for lunch and the soup is tasty and well seasoned. This pho used to be the pho of all pho's. I would always compare other Vietnamese restaurants to this one. They recently got new chef. The chef is adding new items to the menu which is good but unfortunately they have ruined one of their best items CP2 aka a claypot. It used to be something everybody would try and be blown away by and it was worth the drive just for that. Now however it is more like a glorified house fried rice. Please bring back the old claypots!!!! On a positive note if you just want pho, it is still delicious here. BUT THE CLAYPOTS! I now have sadness in my soul. I am so so so jived this place is here and next to my favorite grocery store to boot! After posting a thread on finding the best Pho in the Hampton Roads area, this place was highly recommended and also the closest to my casa. Anyway, this past weekend, I finally went. I got my usual Pho Ga & Spring rolls, because, sometimes I am a creature of habit and I know what I like. Absolutely delicious, meaty, falvorful and exactly what I wanted. I actually got my order to go, because I wasn't feeling so hot, but I did get the opportunity to chill inside for a bit to get an idea on the vibe. It was a Saturday afternoon and not busy at all. The inside was surprisingly nice, most Pho joints I have been to are tiny and weird and no one speaks English.. But Pho 79 is not like that. It was nice, clean, larger than I expected.. legit. HOWEVER, and the reason I did not give them 5 stars, I was totally annoyed by the entire (very young) waitstaff standing in front of me in the bar area as I sipped my lemonade and waited for my food to come out. There were literally 10 of them standing there gossiping and generally annoying the shit out of me. Whatever, I get it, it was slow and they were bored, but I hate it when waitstaff do this. Go in the back. I don't care that so & so is 15 minutes late and "whats his nuts or whats her tits" is a queen. I want to listen to the music and enjoy my refreshing beverage without listening to this. Anyway, ill deal with it and I will totally come here again, possibly with earplugs. read more

This place is perfectly fine for Virginia Beach. Sure, feel free to compare it to your favorite place back home (SF, NYC, DC, etc) or even cut your teeth as a Yelp newbie and scrutinize every square inch, but in the end it's a good choice among limited choices. I enjoy coming here when I visit the family. There's a wide variety of options, with something for everyone. My dad isn't food-venturous so the rice and grilled pork was great for him. Everyone else at the table had more interesting/typical dishes like the rolls (fried and fresh), pho, and bun. A large pho is suitable for a big appetite, no sides or apps needed. Everyone rolled out afterward, rubbing their bellies and dreaming about nap nap time. Good times. read more

I've eaten here before and it was pretty good, went back this weekend and got the pork and shrimp egg noodle pho. It didn't have the flavor it had when I tried it the first time and the "pork" that was in it was dry. How do you dry out meat in soup?? When we took out the "pork" and tasted it separately it tasted more like turkey deli meat. Which it probably was since they also sell deli sandwiches. When we told the server to just let the cook know the meat was dry he just looked at us like he had no idea what was going on. We paid for our meal but wanted others not to go through the same experience. Will not be returning. read more

This is my second time coming here and this will be my go too Pho spot. The service is outstanding because everyone is attentive and helpful with deciding on the pho for you. I've had the chicken pho and the broth was savory but not over the top. The chicken practically melts in your mouth because of the tenderness. They have good happy hours which is always a plus and enough mixed drinks to hang around at the bar. It's next door to Trader Joe's so don't overlook it. After going to the Town Center / Pembroke location a bunch and having great experiences, I figured I would try this location since it is closer to home. While this is the nicest looking Pho 79 I've been to, the service and food weren't even close. First time, I dined in with my wife. Overall things started fine. Then about half way through dinner, our server and the bar staff all disappeared for 30 minutes. No refills, no check, etc. We finally had to go knock on the kitchen door to get someone to bring the check. We should have just walked out. Next time, we order a pho to go. Quoted 5-10 minutes. My wife gets there, told it may be more like 20 minutes. Long story short, an hour and 15 minutes later, after multiple excuses, she left with no pho! The incompetence and lack of caring of the employees is astounding. PS- this location over-cooks their meats. The meat should be medium rare at most so that once added to the broth, you don't end up with well done shoe leather. Do yourself a favor and stick to the town center location. read more

This place looks great and has a decent location in Hilltop. Unfortunately, the service isn't great and it doesn't make up for the average pho. I was excited for the many options in choosing my own pho, but the broccolli I chose was too hard for soup and the broth was nothing to write home about. They boast the largest menu of the local Pho 79s, and I did try some good shrimp/onion egg rolls which were delicious. The wait staff this night seemed like a group of local young men, three of which hung out at the bar chatting most of the time, and one other guy who had all the customer's ask him for stuff, since he was the only one wandering the restaurant. The Thai tea was watery instead of the light spice and sweetness I usually see at Thai restaurants that authentic. The pho (flank, brisket, steak) was alright. It seemed like they compensated for the lack of spices in the broth with lots and lots of salt. And the bean sprouts weren't fresh (tinged brown and bruised). But there was plenty of rice noodles with I always appreciate. They definitely did not skimp on portion size and my server was very attentive. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it to a friend, too Americanized. But maybe I've been spoiled. I'm used to small intimate Thai restaurants where there is an irate old lady at the counter and that's how you know the food is good before you even try it. read more
