Pho is the best thing in the world when it is cold outside. You go from soul-shivering to soul-simmering after one spoonful of that delicious broth. This Pho 79 is located right next to Trader Joe's and is pretty upscale in terms of decor. I'm used to my Pho joints being a little more rough around the edges and do get a little suspicious that the high end dining room is an effort to distract me from mediocre food. But not to worry here. Everything is quality. The only questionable aspect is if the two large screen TV's are really necessary. I get the one behind the bar to keep the boozers dazzled while they drink away an afternoon or evening but the one in the dining room is a bit suspect. What really got me was they had it tuned to the Travel Channel and Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Foods program was on. Just as I am tearing my Thai basil leaves and squeezing my lime, hoisin and sriracha sauce into my Pho, AZ starts noshing on some just delivered cow placenta. That image alone was gross enough but my degenerate brain had to imagine that maybe bovine afterbirth is the secret ingredient to Pho broth along with pork bones and who knows what else. It took me a minute or two to shake that possibility out of my head before I could dive in and start slurping up my noodley bowl of Pho goodness. read more

Picked up some pho to go for my oldest son who was sick and craving soup. I ordered him a large Pho Tai, Bo Vien (pho with round steak and meatballs) and got a large order of Pho Ga (pho with chicken) for us. The bartender who took my order was very accommodating and polite. The place looked very nice, I would definitely return to eat in. The decor was fancier than most Pho restaurants that I have visited in this area. Everything tasted fresh and the servings were generous. I could easily eat Pho a couple of times a week. It's the perfect meal when you're feeling under the weather! The broth is delicious...I never see any fat in it at all. My son was happy with his special delivery from Mom (along with a 1/2 gallon of sweet tea). Our Pho Ga hit the spot, as well. Two thumbs up for Pho 79! read more

Seriously my favorite spot in VB!!!!!! The food...I have had two of there Pho soups #4 and #10 and have never been disappointed good every time (order the app size!! its the perfect little portion) I have also one of there sizzling entrees which was also awesome comes out on a skillet with a plate of rice and veggies. The service...the food is awesome but the service could use a little help, there are about 3 servers that seem to know what they are doing. It just feels like the staff just needs a little organizing and it has the potential to run a little smoother. All in all I'm definitely going back no matter what!! read more

I wish this restaurant was closer to my house because I would definitely come here often if I could! I normally am not a person that loves pho but I really liked the broth here. They gave generous portions for the tasty vermicellis (chicken and beef). All the presentations of the food was pleasing, the interior was nice, and the servers were very attentive. There are very few places in Hampton Roads where one can get a Banh Mi. Sadly, this is one of those places. I used to come here for the banh mi dac biet, but they took it off the menu. Terrible move my friend! Everything else here (Pho, Vermicelli, BBQ) is pretty average at best. The service here is usually pretty good, except one time when our waiter did not know what boba/bubble tea was. After having to describe boba to him, he brought it out in an overflowing to-go cup wrapped in paper towels. While I love the idea of overflowing boba, it's definitely common sense to clean up the item you are serving. Clean up your act Pho 79! read more

One of the nicest Vietnamese restaurants I've eaten at. Great broth, fresh spring rolls. Highly recommend.

The Thai tea was watery instead of the light spice and sweetness I usually see at Thai restaurants that authentic. The pho (flank, brisket, steak) was alright. It seemed like they compensated for the lack of spices in the broth with lots and lots of salt. And the bean sprouts weren't fresh (tinged brown and bruised). But there was plenty of rice noodles with I always appreciate. They definitely did not skimp on portion size and my server was very attentive. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it to a friend, too Americanized. But maybe I've been spoiled. I'm used to small intimate Thai restaurants where there is an irate old lady at the counter and that's how you know the food is good before you even try it. read more

This place was decent. First off, the decor was BEAUTIFUL. This was, far and away, the NICEST-looking pho joint I've ever been to. In fact, considering that the best pho I've ever had was served in a place that looked like a prison cafeteria, the beautiful decor of this place was a little worrisome and unnerving. The food was pretty good. It certainly wasn't the best pho I've ever had (Pho Golden Cow, how I miss you!), but it was flavorful, the meat wasn't very fatty, and the aromatics were fresh and delicious (no culantro, though, for you die-hards). My dining companion also enjoyed her non-pho grilled beef dish and would highly recommend it. I'm docking two stars though for extremely indifferent service by our waiter, who seemed beyond distracted and much more interested in hanging out with the bartender at the front. We asked for some unsweetened iced tea to mix with the (way WAY too sweet) sweet tea that was ordered and it...never came. To the point where I had to take the glass, walk up to the bar, and request it. That seems a little ridiculous to me. Then we waited an extremely long time for the bill and had to flag someone else down to get it. Overall, if I were a local, I'd definitely go back, but I do think some of their servers could benefit from some additional training. read more

VERY YUMMY. You will be happy. I'd recommend B5 the shrimp vermicelli. The shrimp is cooked perfectly so it's not too tough but still has a slight smoky smell. There is a perfect vegetable to noodle to shrimp ratio. They keep the crushed peanuts on the side and the lettuce is sliced very thin but still retains its fresh crunch. The flavors all compliment each other very well, and with a dash of some of their red pepper, you'll be left craving more. If you're not a shrimp fan, go for the pork. They cook it nice and slow for your max flavor blast! If you're in the mood for something fancy and different, try the sizzling pot dishes. They come out on a larger pan while your food remains steaming. You will not be disappointed. The atmosphere is perfect for a family dinner or a cute date night out. They have great mood lighting and TVs if you want to watch a game. They're these huge fans on the ceiling that kind of offer a cabana feel which keeps you in the beachy mood. I was craving some Pho but too lazy to drive out to Timberlake Shopping Center to hit up Pho 78 (their broth is amazing!) Since I needed to make a Trader Joe run, I gave this place a try. Was torn between getting some Kalbi or Pho. I know I wanted soup, but the words 'Kalbi' jumped out from the menu at me, so I had to get some. Fortunately, this place offers, not 2, but 3 sizes. Pretty awesome for greedy chubsters like me. The server recommended I get the "appetizer" size, which I did. Definitely smaller than a small size, but nonetheless, decent and filling (more than filling, especially following a Kalbi meal). PHO: The broth is what you find at most Pho joints -- its decent. It's not the kind where you just want to continuously smack your lips and eventually tip that bowl back and drain the remaining contents. It's just not as beefy and tasty as Pho 78's. (You'll understand this by making a trip to 78 and doing the comparison yourself.) KALBI: Not bad at all. Definitely hit my Kalbi craving that I didn't have prior to arriving. *smh I'm like my short ribs cut thicker. These were on the thinner side. But the flavor is what you would expect in Korean BBQ. I enjoyed it. :) Oh, and I love that their unsweetened tea is actually iced jasmine tea! So good! Will I be coming back? Of course. It's a closer drive and Trader Joe's is next door and I can never have to many TJ mango and vanilla bean flavored Greek yogurts. read more

I've been in all types of pho shops and most of then tend to be on the seedier side of things. But Pho 79 bucks that trend with a nice, clean, modern look and feel for both the seating area and the bar. My bowl of Pho was just as delicious as always, piping hot, served immediately, with plenty of veggies on the side. Additionally, my server kept my drink full, which is great because I went crazy with the Siracha. Pho 79 is definitely worth a visit. read more

Saw this place had some pretty good reviews so we decided to drop in. Not sure what to call him but the Manager/Bartender/host was really nice and welcoming. He sat us immediately and took our drinks. I just had a water but my gf had a coconut bubble tea. He came back with drinks and the bubble tea, my gf didn't really like the coconut so he offered her another flavor without hesitation. We order wings for starters and Wow!! These were some of the best wings I've had in a while. Definitely worth getting. I also ordered the Pho which was ok for me not the best but not bad either. Had I known the lunch special( $7.95) was a size of a chicken noodle soup bowl, I would have ordered the regular size. Though I have a feeling it wouldn't be much bigger. Although a little too loosely wrapped the springrolls (goi cuon) tasted wonderful !!! I wonder what brand of noodle they used. Ive never had springrolls with these thick noodles inside but it worked! Im an expert Banh Mi eater, ive eaten hundreds from all over and was dissapointed with theirs. I had high hopes going in. They did not have the traditional Dac Biet version (vietnamese cold cuts&pate). The sandwich was not on a crunchy golden baguette but rather some white roll that was rather doughy tasting. Barely any daikon inside and mayo/soy sauce spread was non existant. Overall the food presentation is good, the place is nice,clean and beautifully decorated. There is something about being sick that just instantly draw you to Pho. Sadly, for our trip to VA beach, my hubby and I were feeling rough, sore throats and all... and Pho seemed to be the only remedy. We ordered a large "Adventure" or Ph Đc Bit (Noodle soup with round steak, well-done flank, brisket, soft tendon, and bible tripe). It was good, very reminiscent of the Pho-s we've had back in NY are we were happy with it. Despite our sore throats, we ordered the obligatory "Grilled Pork Chop over Rice" dish. It was surprising since it was served on skewers and not exactly what we were expecting. But it tasted good... the only disappointment is that it didn't come with the pickled carrots and diakon the plate usually comes with. Good food and service. read more

I was impressed with the decor, the oil paintings on the walls of Vietnam culture, and a full bar! Also there are flat screen TVs with ESPN on for sport fans. The descriptive menu have suggestions for beginners, intermediate, and advanced pho(nantics). I ordered the spring rolls with shrimp and of course pho. Both were okay. Yes I have had better pho somewhere else. I do have something to say about the napkins on the table though. They are the small and cheap kind that you get when you order a hot dog from hot dog stand. By far, the tastiest pho that I have, possibly, ever had! Live in DC but was in the area to celebrate the one year wedding anniversary with the hubby. Read the good reviews on Yelp and decided to give the place a try (it was a cold day in November). The ambiance was nice - sports bar like. We ordered hot tea and proceeded to get two orders of pho and a pork bunh (if I am not mistaken). My husband ordered one of the beef phos while I ordered pho with pork broth - BEST CHOICE EVER! Never having been one to finish a whole bowl of pho, I DEVOURED it and made sure to leave no trace of broth behind. It was seriously the tastiest broth that I have ever had! Made me realize that DC pho is seriously lacking as I cannot recall a single restaurant that offers pho with pork broth! Definitely check this place out if you have a craving for pho and are in the Virginia Beach area; my only source of sorrow is that DC is so far away from the region (will just have to make another trip in the near future). read more

Cure for my tofu cravings. I don't cook it at home or eat it in anything else but pho. I choose this restaurant to get my fix because of its proximity to home. The decor is pretty neat. It's designed to look like outside dining while you're inside. I wouldn't recommend the calamari. It's not fresh and it's in strips. Here is the only place I've seen it like this. The sesame dipping sauce was tasty. The perks, large portioned flavorful pho filled with broccoli, mushrooms, onion, and tofu. I add sriracha, hoisin sauce, the red chili sauce, sometimes their homemade lemongrass sauce, basil, lime, and jalapeño. Basically i just leave out the bean sprouts. I've ordered the jasmine tea twice. The first time it was just right. The second time it was steeped too long and got bitter. The other dish my bf had was p4. It's got steak and brisket. He said the pho was very flavorful but the meat was kinda bland. He wasn't a fan of rice noodles and would prefer ramen over pho and was a little disappointed there was no veggies aside from onion in his pho. Both times I was there I had a gnat floating around my face which is concerning. I have the same waitress twice. The most recent time she didn't pause long enough to ask her questions. She was just dropping stuff off and vanishing. Maybe bc it was an hour before closing and she was just ready to go. We were there until 9 and saw several couples come in with in 5-15 minutes before closing. They did not want to serve them. They sent some away. Their kitchen closes up at lease 30 minutes before the restaurant closes. They also start stacking chairs on tables in the center of the dining room about an hour before closing. read more

Ok, but the Virginia Beach Boulevard and Chesapeake locations are still much better. Disappointed again by their fresh spring rolls. The wrapper was too chewy and the shrimp did not taste fresh, but they were still edible. The pho was ok. Can't really go wrong with a small #9, which includes everything, but I still had to add enough hoisin and sriracha for flavor. The only real plus to this location is its decor and its proximity to Trader Joe's. If you're in that area, do yourself a favor and eat somewhere else. read more

I have several complaints and not many praises. Complaints: 1. Waiters did not provide us with utensils upon seating. It was only after i received my food AND I had to ask for it. 2. Me and my party asked for more white rice but was told they ran out. For anyone who is asian, it takes 10 mins to make white rice in the RICE COOKER! 3. For the most part, we order quite a few items off the menu but the majority of the food was just too salty and felt like the chef just threw nuoc mam (fish sauce) in everything and called it a day. Came here for lunch, and got shrimp and pork rice paper spring rolls with peanut dip and large Pho bowls (P4 and P9 on menu). Easily one of the best bowls of pho I've ever had, and I'm from NYC and grew up eating pho a lot so that's saying something!
