Took 35 minutes to get our pho and banh mi. The manager apologized, which I appreciate, since she was upfront and admitted she messed up, which happens at times to all of us. The spring rolls seemed to be salad mix wrapped into a rice wrapper (?) and I had to bite and rip to retrieve the salad mix from it. The banh mi also had salad mix on the bottom of the baguette and it also had onions and resembled more of a love child sub sandwich of a corporate sub restaurant chain than a banh mi. The pho for $6.95 plus tax seemed like a reasonable price, but the banh mi for $6.95 plus tax wasn't that great of a deal, IMO. Some Vietnamese hole in the wall restaurants charge $3-$5 in certain places for a banh mi. However, $6.95 wasn't overpriced, but wasn't an amazing deal either. Again, not sure if they are looking to do a fusion style of banh mi or not, but it didn't resemble most banh mis I have eaten in my life. I've gone twice. Both times at lunch. Both times I ordered the bahn mi. First time I was alone and waited so stupidly long I just got up and left swearing I'd never go back. The wife.. she really wants to try this joint...amd I have a long lunch break one day and so I swing by and pick her up. Her new job is near by so that great right? 45 minutes for 2 bahn mi while 3 groups who ordered after us are served. Server says it's all made fresh and it's the lunch rush. Hmmmmmm? I end up not having time to eat because of the long wait. I am forced to ask that the food we planned to eat on site be packaged up to go. I send my wife and both sandwiches back to her work and ask her to share with a colleague since I don't have the schedule for it at this point. The reports I get back from her are of hard bread, bland flavor, and inconsistency. Please don't expect lunch time quickness, good quality, or (after I spoke to a "manager") customer service worth your time or money. read more

It has soup. I won't call it Pho. Pho is all about the broth. They literally told me that they use the same broth in all their soups. It is light and clear not dark and hearty like it should be. Broth is the sacred grail that you long for when in search of good Pho. When in St. Louis stop by "Pho Long" on Olive for a precursor in your Pho quest. I say it is a quest because I know of no other single dish which can satisfy mans' desire for comfort food like a steaming, beefy, salty, spicy, aromatic, herbaceous delight like great Pho can. You need this, trust me. Rant officially over. The restaurant daily provides good food and the establishment is clean for its patrons. It's not a bad stop overall. It's nice to have a Vietnamese place in Cape, especially considering most of the restaurants here are national chains. I've been here twice, and neither was a great experience. The first time I came, I ordered the banh mi, aka Vietnamese sandwich. It took 45 minutes for our sandwiches, with no apology or explanation of wait time. The second time, my husband and I got pho. As a regular pho eater, I found this very disappointing. The broth was clear with not much flavor. The broth is the foundation of the dish! There were 2 small slices of beef, and a scant amount of herbs. Would not order again. Finally, it bothers me that they have no water available. Only water available is by the bottle, which just seems ridiculous. Probably wouldn't return here. read more

I ordered the sweet jalapeño rice bowl and loved it. I got it with chicken, it usually comes with beef. We started with the crispy spring rolls and loved those as well. My favorite part is the fact that they had Vietnamese iced coffee; I didn't know I could find that in Cape. I'll definitely be back! read more

I was excited to see a Vietnamese place walking distance from the hospital but when I got there it was kinda weird, not what I expected. Pretty limited menu. I went hopping for some bún bò xào, my standard for judging, but no, did not have. I ordered ch giò but they were disappointing as they came with no veg or herbs and with some odd pepper jelly instead of some fragrant nc chm. In fact, I was disappointed in the apparent absence of fish sauce anywhere. The ph didn't seem like any I'd had before and I'm not enough of an expert to know how authentic it was. The thin vermicelli noodles seemed out of place, the broth wasn't as deep as most I've had. Having said all that, you know what? I left happy, so I'm not going do deny them my stars of approval. It was because it was a frigid rainy night and I had a cold and the place was clean and people friendly and the ph was hot and tasty so I walked out happy and satisfied. Wow... this place is called Pho 8 for a reason: incredible pho! I'm not actually sure if I ever had pho before coming here, but this is probably the best Vietnamese food I've ever had, and I've been to several Vietnamese places in St. Louis and Houston. Since the place is named for pho, and the menu said theirs is famous, I knew I had to order it! As for the less important qualities, those are awesome too! This is a 3.5. I'm rounding down as they don't have tap water and make you buy bottled water. Vietnamese food can be spicy, so that seems like a racket. Yes, yes, like it has been lamented before, the food doesn't taste authentic, but ya know, as a vegetarian, authentic restaurant Vietnamese food is often polluted with fish sauce, so I am okay with it. Ordering is at a counter from several large menu boards and they bring you the prepared food. Everything is explained and you could order in English without fear of butchering something in Vietnamese. All employees I saw were white, FWIW, so no one might even know if you said something wrong. I had pho, even though it was grossly hot and humid that day. I think pho tastes better with a few spoonfuls of chili oil, but I backed off due to the aforementioned water situation. The other two people I was dining with (I call them Mom and Dad :) ), enjoyed their noodle dishes. Food was otherwise cheap, although the bahn mi seemed expensive as I have it my head that Oakland Chinatown prices should be universal (4 sandwiches for $10). Have been wanting to try this place for a while and finally got the chance this evening. My sister, who has celiac disease, thought it would be wonderful to have the rice noodle pho with chicken. I went with the special, green curry eggplant over rice with egg. Also threw in a couple of crispy rolls and two glasses of water. Run of the mill, nothing special we thought, $30 with 10% tip for the cashier. Our wait for our meal was approximately 40 mins, the food was fine, nothing to die for, and we had to ask the person who brought us our meal twice for our water. Eagerly anticipated visiting Pho 8 and was not let down. The cafe is finely appointed, with a welcoming and warm decor. Its cafe style so you order at the register and pay, then they bring the food to you at your choice of table. Staff was friendly, menu was easy to read on the wall chalkboards, drink selection in a cooler right aty the register. I enjoyed a Mexican coke, the spring rolls, and the combination pho soup. Spring rolls were perfect. Hot without being tongue burning hot, crispy shell, flavorful noodles and veggies inside. Served with a sweet chili dipping sauce which perfectly complimented them. Phone broth was stellar. Served in a very large bowl and Full of flavor, and the shrimp chicken beef and meatballs were all perfectly cooked. Noodles were spot on, and the dressing plate was fresh and flavorful. Complimentary chili sauce, syracha, fish sauce and soy with the utensils. If you are a Pho lover as i am, this place is sadly dissapointing. The broth (which is THE reason to order Pho) is watered down to the point of tastlessness. It tasted like hot garlic water- not even a hint of the delicious spice that makes Pho so wonderful. And at $9.00 for a small bowl, expensive too. The basil and sprout side was old and brownish.
