Banh mi sandwich with BBQ pork with carrot, cucumber, jalapeños on tender bread.
    Sarah W.

We stopped in here as we wandered around the Chinatown district and glad we did for a filling and tasty lunch. Entry via steep stairs and a narrow doorway led into a quiet restaurant space. Menu was via QR code posted table side and I selected a banh mi sandwich option of BBQ pork. The pork was slightly spicy and contrasted perfectly with the shredded crunchy carrots and cool crunch of cucumbers. Portions were generous and my dining companions ordered lo mein noodles and vegetable fried rice. We were famished after a long travel day, but otherwise would have usually had plenty of leftovers. Service was attentive without being intrusive. Ambiance was almost as quiet as a library, which was a welcome change of pace.

Pho 88 Noodles & Grill -- Comfort in the Cold On a Tuesday night with a severe weather advisory (19 degrees but feeling closer to 7), I grabbed my partner's sweater, wrapped in a little Nordic warmth from Iceland, and carefully made my way through snow and icy roads to Pho 88 Noodles & Grill. The walk was slightly longer than usual from my neighborhood in Bloomingdale to the NoMa/Gallaudet Metro, but I had a strong craving for one thing: a steaming, soul-warming bowl of pho broth. And truthfully, navigating the snow- and ice-covered sidewalks and streets was a challenge. Some neighbors and business owners did an admirable job clearing their property, while others did not, making parts of the trek slippery and uncertain. Once inside, though, the warmth was immediate, a cozy escape from the sharp winter air. I ordered a generous bowl of pho with chicken broth only (no meat or vegetables), and it was everything I hoped for. The broth arrived piping hot, fragrant, and deeply comforting, with that slow-simmered flavor that feels like it's been nurtured for hours. It was rich without being heavy, delicately seasoned, and soothing in the best way, the kind of savory warmth that instantly thaws you from the inside out. And the spring rolls? Absolutely worth it. I enjoyed four crisp, golden fried spring rolls, stuffed with a flavorful mix of shrimp, chicken, pork, crab, and taro. Each bite was hearty, savory, and perfectly crunchy, a delicious complement to the warm simplicity of the pho broth. Honestly, my actions were on repeat, going back and forth between the crispy spring rolls and the steaming broth (dip, sip, crunch, comfort) over and over again. It was the perfect rhythm for a winter night. My server was pleasant, gracious, and attentive, making the experience feel welcoming and unrushed. The restaurant was relatively quiet, with about ten diners enjoying their meals - a peaceful little refuge from the winter chill outside. My experience lasted slightly over two hours, giving me time to truly settle in, warm up, and savor every bite without feeling rushed. For about $20, this was the perfect winter comfort meal and a reminder that sometimes a hot bowl of broth and crispy spring rolls are exactly what you need, a simple form of self-care on a freezing winter night. And somehow, after such a warm and comforting experience, the walk home felt easier to navigate, as if the broth had warmed more than just my hands; it warmed my spirit too. Pho 88 delivered warmth, flavor, and comfort right on time.

The only good tasting thing here was the can of Coke...and that even had a funny taste

***this isn't what pho should be *** When we arrived at the location, it was next to a dispensary....in Chinatown. Hell, I never knew we smoked weed but two elderly women bought some shit there. Should've left when I noticed rat droppings on the steps of the two businesses but we were craving pho. The restaurant looked okay, a lot of mahogany colored furniture. We sat behind a couple of teachers that were talking politics which was entertaining listening to...yes we were ear hustling. We ordered the #1, a fried pork chop rice plate, Siu Mei and egg custard bun. Let's start with the #1 pho. The soup base was terrible, I tasted more seasoning/favor in a bottle of Fuji water. Yes it was brown in color with green onions floating but that's for decoration. The meat was dry and even the water couldn't rehydrate the meat. Now for the noodles...I get more out of a package of ramen noodles. Such a disappointment but maybe we're just use to great tasting pho from San Francisco. My wife had the pork chops rice plate. She says that it was okay tasting and she could eat it but it didn't come with soup, again maybe it's because we're from eating great tasting pho. But she left a few pieces on her plate which we tried when she left the table. My daughter and I tried it and thought it was very greasy. We come to find out that it was the fatty pieces she left. The egg custard bun was nothing spectacular...it wasn't even anything average. The egg was dried and tasted like...an unseasoned egg yolk...bland The Siu Mei was tiny. Tasted awful. Like something they got from the frozen section of Costco. Texture was squishy like a steamed sponge. Maybe we're spoiled eating pho from the Bay Area but this doesn't even come close to a quarter of what our expectations are. No pho until we get home.

Popped into Pho 88 in Chinatown after a museum outing with my sister! This spot is in a row house style building - a little steep on the steps, but very spacious inside. This is a solid spot with great quality pho. I got the Pho Tai - flank steak with fresh toppings. The broth was flavorful and perfectly seasoned. The service was extremely fast with the staff taking our order as soon as we walked into the restaurant. Very accommodating! Great spot if you are craving pho!

This is a great place to get your fix of vietnamese dishes, it satisfied my need for pho and truly takes it the authentic route and has a combo menu item that includes intestine! For me, that is so necessary in pho because the soft chewy bites of tendon and bouncy bites of intestine are needed a dish where noodles are actively becoming more soft and one texture as they sit in the broth. That is one of the hallmarks of a great bowl of pho. And when I asked for chili oil, they actually gave me an in-house chili oil that also makes other red oil broth dishes, but I thought that was a nice change of pace and introduced a lot of flavor to the dish such as lemongrass. It really transformed my bowl and made it almost adjacent to other viet classic Bún bò Huế or Bún riêu. I was very satisfied with my bowl. This is one of those places where pho is marked above $20. However, for DC and in the support of small businesses that produce high quality Southeast Asian food, I am for it because we need to see these types of food priced at its level of artistry. Vermicelli noodle bowl was generously portioned and the protein was well marinated and had all the proper fixings that made each bite diverse, fresh, and tangy when paired with the seasoned fish sauce.

I was in the mood for a hot bowl of soup and noodles and this was the closest to my hotel on a cold and gray day. I got the shrimp pho #8. The soup hit the spot. Waitress was really nice. Interior has a warm atmosphere. You'd have to be ok with the high prices here though. I'm used to paying this price in the SF Bay Area and expect prices to be less in DC. The place didn't stand out enough for the price, and with other pho places, I'd try out the others before returning when I'm in town.

Loved our experience here. The food was absolutely amazing definitely a little hole in the wall feeling. We loved the pho we had and I got the baos which was really yummy. The egg rolls were good too. Not pictured was these egg tarts and coconut dumplings we got for dessert which was so good. It was warm and fresh. The lady that served us was super sweet

Place is so cute inside. The food was pretty good. I liked the buns, krab rangoons, and sesame balls

Food was fantastic, got the vegetable pho and it was perfect. The Red Bean Sesame balls were also a fantastic desert, perfect light donut like dessert.

I've eaten here twice and both times I loved my food. I always go in and order to take out. I typically get the brisket pho which is on average about $18 a bowl which seems to be standard. Whenever I go in, service is normal and quick. I usually have my food in 10-15 mins. The mixed reviews scare me but I will be back for more as long as my experience continues to be good.

Before we even walked into the restaurant, we were informed that the left entrance door had been broken for quite some time. Since we had a double baby stroller with us, getting inside was a bit of a challenge and not exactly the best first impression. Overall Ratings Atmosphere - 3/5 Service - 3/5 Food - 3/5 Parking - Street Parking Atmosphere - The restaurant feels a bit old and dated and could probably use some updating. Interestingly, while the dining room definitely shows its age, the ordering system is modern and up to date. The contrast between the two was pretty noticeable. Service - Service was just okay. This is more of a casual setup where customers place their orders at the counter and the staff bring the food out when it's ready. There wasn't really anything memorable, either good or bad, about the service experience. What We Ordered - -Spring Rolls (Good) -Pho Dac Biet (Special Beef Pho) - The flavor was good overall, but the broth was only lukewarm when it arrived. A bowl of pho really needs to be piping hot, so this took away from the experience. -Grilled Pork Rice Plate - The pork was a bit too salty for my taste and was just okay overall. Final Thoughts - This was an average dining experience. The food was decent, the service was adequate, and the atmosphere was nothing particularly special. Nothing stood out enough to make me want to go out of my way to return, but I also wouldn't discourage others from trying it if they're already in the area. There are simply other Vietnamese restaurants nearby that I would be more inclined to visit first.

The music venue is located below the Hamilton, a storied dining experience in the 600 block of 14th Street in D.C. Doors would open at 6:30 p.m. for a performance that would begin, right on time, at 8 p.m. I travel alone, and prefer not to join tables, opting instead to sit where single seats are available. The Hamilton - Live offers both: most of the seating is in groups of 4- or 6-seat benches where groups gather, and there are rows of single seats on a slight rise above the forward seating, offering a great view of the stage and the screens above the stage. I arrived around 7 p.m. Within minutes Marie greeted me with a menu and instructions to post a card on a holder at my place, signaling her to stop by to take my order. The menu was eclectic, with sushi, pizza, tacos, salads, wings, cheeseburger sliders, and nachos. There are robust vegetarian and gluten-free selections, and a fully licensed bar. I placed the card in the holder at my seat and Marie returned to take my order: sushi - shrimp tempura ($14), with a can of Nutrl Pineapple ($8) and a double G&T ($23.18). The crowd was gathering, and the attending wait staff were moving with speed, filling orders. My meal arrived in great shape about 15 minutes after I placed the order. Nicely executed sushi! Sound quality in the venue is great, and the restroom was clean and well lit. And as the catalogues of both the Dead and Steely Dan inspire dancing, the dance floor was filled right from the start. The band's vibe was low key and spontaneous, with lots of smiling on the dance floor. Total with a 22% tip was $79 (which included a white Russian nightcap). Reasonable fare for the DMV. Taxi, Uber, and Lyft are readily available from the venue.

She was most likely on auto pilot and appeared embarrassed when she realized it. I politely smiled and said (confidently), table for 1. We solo diners need to be loud and proud! I digress... Before being seated I found the restroom. I found it odd that it was extremely dim. The main dining room was brighter than the restroom! I also saw the Photo Booth. Interesting addition. $5 for pictures. I was seated at a small round table with two chairs by the window. The restaurant was plenty busy, and I'm just glad I wasn't asked if I wanted to sit at the bar (I didn't). My server Noel brought two bottles of water: still and sparkling. I requested lemon slices, which he brought. And I proceeded to finish the entire bottle of sparkling by the end of the meal...guess I was thirsty! But I appreciated the option of both. I forgot to ask for a straw, but saw them in a container at the register right behind my table, so I got one myself. After ordering I noticed a nearby table had some bread so I asked Noel if they served complimentary bread. He said yes and apologized for not bringing it initially. Not that I needed it, but I don't eat bread with butter often and this was a night out to indulge a bit. There were two slices, nothing special. My food arrived within about 10-15 minutes and looked so scrumptious. I ordered the lamb and short rib meatballs and Brussels sprouts. The meatballs were pretty good, but what made them even better was the tzatziki sauce. I didn't realize the green rice was on one side of the plate until I was almost done. That tzatziki sauce was really all I needed to go with the meatballs. It was cool and creamy to go with the dry, meatiness of the meatballs. I honestly wish there had been more of it! I did not finish the rice, which didn't look super appetizing because of the intense green color. I will say though, I'm not a fan of spicy food but the tzatziki had a kick. I think perhaps due to chopped jalapeños. I tried to avoid them once I realized. The Brussels were delicious! Roasted to perfection, not too charred and not too mushy. I requested the green goddess sauce on the side because I'm not a huge sauce person, but once I tried it, I couldn't stop. Again, the combination of the creaminess of the sauce with the flakiness of the Brussels was a genius pairing. During the meal the beverage manager stopped by. I didn't have any drinks with the meal, but perhaps I will return to see what they have. Noel brought the bill at my request, then brought over the portable device so I could pay at the table. While that process is efficient, it's always awkward leaving a tip when the server is standing right there. Anyhow, overall it was a good experience and a delicious meal!

This was one of the most unique shakshukas I'd ever had... It literally tasted like a curry dish you might get at your local Indian restaurant, with a bit of a brunch flair to it. The curry itself had a wee bit of spice and was a bit sweet - but that could have been from the sweet potatoes. The chicken was served in a bowl on the side, which felt a bit... odd... I would've expected it to be incorporated into the main dish. It was kind of bland and a bit lukewarm, so I don't know that I'd order that again... but I would definitely order this again!

True to its name, Unconventional Diner is not your average brunch spot - it delivers on fun and…read moreunique dishes (available until 3:45pm). The Tikka dish with fried egg was tasty, but wish paneer or larger protein option was built-in (not an upcharge)! The creamy red Tikka curry sauce, caramelized onions, crispy brussel sprouts, and fried ere tasty and paired well, the dish felt incomplete and something was missing, maybe some paneer or naan? I paid $5 for a side of zesty naan topped with different spices and really wish it came with the dish just came with it. While I was tempted to order the falafel, I couldn't justify shelling out another $5 for another upcharge and spend $10 on them for a total of $26 for just an entree - when these 2 upcharges should have been included in the entree by default. Wish there were more fun vegetarian dishes on the menu. Might come back for drinks and to explore the menu!
