    Bun nem nuong cha goi
    Gwen N.

A small hole-in-the-wall type shop that serves an array of different Vietnamese noodle and rice dishes. There is minimal seating and no a/c, but that's ok since the front door is open, allowing for lots of ventilation. They have plastic partitions up separating the tables and less seating available as per covid regulations. I got the bun nem nuong cha goi (vermicelli with grilled ground pork with spring roll) since it was too hot for any soups when I was there. The nem nuong was different than the nem nuong I'm used to eating - it was more crumbly and had minched lemongrass in it. It tasted like a fusion of nem nuong and cha, but still good although different. It came with a hot beef broth as an accompaniment. My bf and our friend both got the pho. I tasted the broth and thought it was okay, not the best I've had but not the worst either. If you're craving pho, it hits the spot just fine. They have a jackfruit milkshake that piqued our interest that we'll get next time. We like the convenient location since it's so close to our friend's house but it's not a place I would go out of my way for. Parking is available on the street.

Well... I dunno! It was okay I guess. Probably won't go back but you never know. I had #73, which was the vermicelli noodle bowl with chicken. Some of my chicken pieces were kinda fatty (gross!). This tiny restaurant only sat 12 guests and we were the only two in there for a while.

Businesses come and go along Lonsdale with alarming rapidity, but this particular location seems to be especially hard to make a go in, because this is the third business to make the attempt since I moved here. I'm hoping that it's going to be more successful than the others, because, well, I'm the kind of guy who likes to eat a different country's cuisine every meal, and, while Lonsdale has a nice selection of cuisines to choose from, one of the cuisines which has been missing up to now is Vietnamese. Mostly, as you might guess from the name, this place specialises in pho, Viet Nam's rice noodle soup. As it happens, I still haven't tried pho, because I always go for the barbecued dishes. In this case, I tried the lemongrass chicken and fried rolls, both of which were excellent. The couple running the place are very friendly, but their English is somewhat limited. I must go back sometime and try the pho, and also the very promising-looking desserts. When I tried it, they had only been open three days, and the machine to allow them to take plastic still hadn't been installed. ("Maybe tomorrow.") Fortunately, I had enough cash on me to cover the cost of the meal. Oh, yeah, the tea is good, too.

Based on the reviews, had expected better. Nice to have this one located on this side of Lonsdale, lots of natural light. Ordered the lemon grass chicken, which i found a bit dry, and average tasting. Not onion cooked green onions too, compared to Vina. Plenty of rice though, and salad. Ice coffee worth a repeat. Nice enough family biz that i'll give them another shot for their pho. compared to pad thai which i just ate earlier, this does seem expensive: $9 for the lemongrass. decent side street parking.

Great Pho, good pricing, and the BEST fried springrolls in North Van. Truly no comparison. Cute little hole in the wall place

Lovely owner, very small shop. The pho was above average. The chilli oil on the table tasted off.

Cozy little setting with decent Pho and good customer service. I recommend you try it, go for House Special or Rare Beef.

As usual, I'm late to the party. I've heard about Phnom Penh…read moreand its famous chicken wings ever since I moved to Vancouver, nine-ish years ago. My fellow Yelpers raved about this place when I first moved here, and my kid came here with her school pals 5-6 years ago and also raved about the wings. It's been on my list to come here forever - and last night, finally, I did. It did not disappoint. My kid warned me, there'll probably be a line up waiting to get in (they don't take reservations here. I checked), so we decided to go at an off-time and get an early dinner, around 5pm on Friday. We walked there and, miracle of miracle, there was no line and we got seated right away. (Granted, we got the last vacant table in the place, and when we left after our meal, there already was a line of people waiting to get in). Food-wise...wow. I am NOT one for adventurous eating, so there were dishes on the menu I couldn't comfortably order (I wish I could, but hey, I'm better now than I used to be!). Still, there was lots for me to choose from. And first and foremost, I HAD to try the famous chicken wings. And I can honestly say, they were the best I've ever had: SO SO crunchy and crispy on the outside, and hot and moist on the inside. OMG so so so good. I can't speak highly enough of these! My kid ordered the butter beef. It was tasty and soft ("like butta!"), and the marinade was lovely, but personally, I couldn't get over the...rawness and redness of the meat and juice (which looked like blood to me). For fellow non-adventurous eaters out there, this might not be for you, despite how flavorful it tasted. It was just hard for me to get over how it looked. (I know I'm in a minority here. This dish is one of their most popular and asked-for dishes). We had the garlic dry spare ribs. I love spareribs. These were delicious but a tad too salty and greasy. I brought most of them home and had them today for lunch. I gotta say, they were so much better for me today: less salty, and I blotted off the excess grease. Delicious! My kid ordered a "small" sweet and sour soup with prawns, and wow, it came in a huge black cauldren. I can't imagine ordering a large size. Anyhow, this soup was a stand-out soup - especially for my kid who said she had dreams about it all night (lol)! So complex in flavors - spicy, sweet, savory, chock full of prawns and sprouts and lotus shoots and pineapple chunks and and other delicious stuff.... For me, it was a wee tad too spicy, but wow, even I thought, this is a special soup. So delicious and warming. 10/10. Our servers were prompt and impressively able to efficiently tend to a full house of diners. They got it all down to a science here. One issue of note: my kid had to use the washroom at one point and she left for a very extended period of time. I actually thought at one point that something had happened to her or she was ill, she was gone so long (VERY unlike her). When she returned, she told me it was "quite a hike", around the back of the restaurant and up a flight of stairs, too. I only make note of this in case anyone has mobility issues, know that the bathroom will be difficult (or impossible) for you to access.

I only hear great things about the wings here and being a lover of fried chicken I made it a point…read moreto stop here on my quick trip to Vancouver. We came around 4pm so there was no wait but by the time we left at like 5 there was already a line forming outside. We got the wings and veggie fried rice, and it took a bit of time for the food to come out but that didn't bother us. The portion for the fried rice was MASSIVE and could easily feed 3-4 people. It was good, nothing to standout but a very good classic fried rice. The wings came out after and were hot and crispy. It comes with a lemon pepper sauce on the side, which was super lemony - great if you like that but I wasn't too big a fan of it. The wings were juicy and fresh, though I will say I did expect a bit more flavor. There was only one piece at the bottom that had a generous coat of the seasoning which I thought was super tasty. Overall, good spot! I'm not sure I'd wait super long for it, but glad I got to try.
