The servers were very nice and sweet, but that's about it. I am from a SoCal, so I definitely know the difference between authentic East Asian cuisine and the Americanized version of it. For Las Cruces, this is a good pho restaurant. The shrimp pho had a lot of flavor and was big enough for two. The shrimp fried rice was also good--several shrimp cooked perfectly; would have preferred a few more vegetables, not just diced carrots and peas. The pork dish my husband got was good as well. First visit. The service was good here. There's a whole page of vegetarian options, and sauces and salads without fish sauce. Their tofu goi cuon was tasty and nicely rolled. The iced coffee was strong. I ordered the mock "beef" salad and the veggie meat had a great flavor and texture. The salad itself was mostly composed of bean sprouts (!), some carrot shreds, tomato slices, mint and Thai basil, and crushed peanuts. It was like 85% bean sprouts. I didn't love it. The only thing in Vietnamese cuisine I can compare it with is maybe a lotus stem salad (goi ngo sen). I'd recommend the spring rolls and chicken wings for appetizers. Their fried rice and iced coffee are also a must. My only complaint is that the service is SLOW regardless of how busy the restaurant is. I've been there on several occasions and they usually only have 1 person waiting on all the tables and helping people pay up front. Naturally this means you'll be waiting extra long to order, receive your food, or pay and leave. Even during my visit last week, there were only 4 customers in the restaurant. My date and I were still standing up front waiting to pay while the waiter and the cook were seated (like patrons) carrying on with conversations and beverages. Delicious and reasonably authentic pho. I always order the chicken pho and it hits the spot. Friends dining with me have had the traditional beef pho and they love it. Ate here for our first day while on a road trip. Coming from LA we were really surprised that the food here reminded us of Pho back home. The broth is delicious and very tasty! My sister got the pork bbq and I got the seafood soup. Both really good and comforting after a long tiring day. The soy sauce chicken wings was also really good. What made the experience better was the staff, when we went it was pretty busy and there was only one server but he was very attentive and made sure all tables was taken care of. Good food if you can get the little 3 foot waiter to come to your table, take your order and then actually get it to your table. Forget about getting a refill on your drink or ordering a dessert, you'll be lucky to get your check and be able to pay your bill in any reasonable length of time. I give it a 2.5 - been here twice now. Overall rather mediocre. Yet, it is something out of the ordinary for this area and they are trying. It is clean, but the smell of the table cleaner interferes with the meal. Not likely to return b/c there are better places to eat in town & the service is very slow. Food: Appetizers were very good. If I ever go back will just get two of those and call it a meal. During the two visits we had various rolls, a beef salad, and a chicken salad. The Pho - okay - not very flavorful - Maybe a 7 out of 10 Beef Vermicelli - my friend really liked it and a piece I tried was very good 9 out of 10 Grilled Pork Vermicelli - Poor quality pieces of pork and flavorless noodles, accompanying sauce was not tasty. Could only eat half. Catfish and rice - Chunks of catfish cooked in fish sauce in its own pot - skin and bones included. After dissecting the fish and and adding it to the rice, my friend said, the authentic flavor was good, but there wasn't much fish. Dessert - had the signature desert - it was delicious 10 out of 10 Green Tea - Really $2.00 for a teabag and hot water!? Overpriced and average Service: Both times - they were very friendly and prompt on arrival. But then it tapered off. The first visit service was slow, but friendly and we were offered and ordered desert. The second visit we were largely ignored. There was a foreign waitress and a the short guy attending to the tables. The waitress began, gave us menus brought out our tea, then it switched to the short guy who took and delivered our orders. Then the long wait for our check - Neither of the staff checked on us after our meal was delivered and there were only a few other customers. We finally were able to catch the waitress' attention. Who knew I could get an authentic Pho in Las Cruces?! Visiting here for a wedding from LA and we were craving for some "comfort food". My friend had Pho Ga and I had pho with rare beef and flank. They give you so much food for the price you paid. The egg roll was also awesome. Pho was $8.75ish and egg roll was $3.75 for 3 pieces. But what was really the best? The host! This is my favorite comfort food restaurant in Las Cruces. I'm from So Cal and wasn't able to get a few blocks without bumping into a great soup place. Pho is one of my favorite comfort foods because it's such a hearty soup and has all the basic things I think are needed to be healthy- fatty meats, rice noodles, greens, onions, and sprouts. Charlie was the person I have conversed with the most while visiting, but all the servers have been exceptionally kind and hospitable. The price is decent for the amount of soup you get, about three servings for $12. So quite worth it. Why the four stars and not five? The ambiance is really terrible. Probably the worst place for a date. There's no music and it's built in such a way that everything echos. So without music you can hear everyone's conversation and sometimes there's these awkward silences which makes the entire restaurants patrons feel like we are in an elevator together and it just got stuck between the floors. HELP! Someone say something! Do something! Yet at that point it seems everyone knows their voice and words will be listened to and heard by all. Ugh. So if they add music, waterfalls, plants, anything to muffle the echo and noise that ruins the ambiance, I'll be sure to update it to a five star review. read more

I'm divided in giving the restaurant a four star because the service was good but a two star because the pho was so sad. I'm no expert but I think the pho broth was lousy and not even a half hearted attempt was made to make it taste like a real pho broth. As someone else already mentioned there was no flavor to it, the start of anise, clove, cardamon, cinnamon and the rest of the spices were all missing! The whole reason pho is so delicious is because of the complex and layered flavors. The broth tasted like someone just added chicken bullion to a pot of water served it with pre-frozen wontons and called it pho. i never write reviews but something has to be said. decided to take a chance against all the recent bad reviews but it's the only pho place around, so. waited so long to pay i even considered just walking out because it wasn't worth my money anyways!! first off, they were out of almost anything my table wanted to order. no smoothies no deserts no meat spring rolls, no basil/bean sprouts for pho. pretty sure their pho broth is just water. served our drinks in red solo cups which was kind of odd. didn't get our drinks till after the food came? service was terrible. felt very uncleanly all around right from walking in. would not recommend to anyone. read more

When me and my wife got here, I immediately noticed that the dining area had the look of a school lunch room. I was slightly discouraged but look can be deceiving. Despite this, it was very clean. Our waiter, one of the two brothers that runs this restaurant, was very attentive and friendly. He help us pick out our order and even told inoffensive jokes that was amusing and charming. This level of being personable really went a long way to making me feel welcome and showed that I wasn't a bother or burden as some waiters do. He also spoke fluent English as well. My soda was served in a can but was ice cold and didn't bother me. Once our order was placed and drinks were served, I immediately noticed there was no ambient music playing and was uncomfortably silent. They had a TV showing movies over the register but it was on mute. Our food was excellent and was cooked correctly when I had make a special request to remove the seafood from my order and replace it with chicken and beef. It was hot, tasty and served in large portions. This is a Vietnamese restaurant but I do not have a frame of reference to know how athletic the food was. Our waiter came by frequently to refill drinks and check on us. Overall, I was very impressed by this restaurant. If there was once thing that could be improved, It would be to add some background music. Aside from that, I completely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great meal. read more

Do not come here. The service is horrible. There is only one waiter working on a Sunday. It's been 40 minutes and we still haven't received our order. I would leave but my kids are hungry. The waiter brought out 4 waters for our family of 5. I asked for my Diet Coke twice and it's still not here 45 minutes later. We are leaving as of now because we can't wait anymore. Food is absolutely delicious... My party had the P5(pho tai) the spring rolls, egg rolls, and the Korean ribs. Food was fresh and all correct for having a bigger party. The service however is the reason for not giving 5 stars. This place is like a one man show. You ask for something, for example your drink, and he takes forever. My party was pretty fun in general but had I been alone or with one person I would have probably let the service bother me more. When the owner of Pho A Dong set up shop where a Mexican restaurant used to be he put a lot of money into the new place....really upgrading the ambiance. So, pay no attention to the Californian who calls the ambiance "terrible." What nonsense. In reality, this is kind of a nice, comfortable place to dine. I have never experienced it as "noisy" and certainly not had a problem listening to the conversations of other diners. So, dear reader, believe that Pho A Dong is a casual, but attractive and comfortable place for a meal. See the Yelp photos and judge for yourself. The parking lot is fairly spacious, but still somewhat in an unfinished condition. But, this doesn't tell the story of the restaurant's interior. The restaurant is a full serve restaurant. The service is often performed by the owner himself. He is a genuinely nice fellow if you take the time to engage him. Would I rate the service anything special, real professional? No! But for a casual little restaurant it is just fine. If people are complaining about the service they need to get a life. The food, of course, is largely Vietnamese. The prices are very reasonable. Generally, the food is not real spicy. If you want it hot there are bottles of hot sauce on the tables. I have found their grilled shrimp to be plump and quite tasty. The grilled pork was delicious. The dipping sauce that came with my meal was delicious and the egg rolls were above average. I have sampled their Pho Tai Gau" which is a soup with brisket, rice noodles, and lots of scallions and bean sprouts. The broth had a nice clean flavor. The amount of brisket was substantial. All-in-all, a nice pho, but perhaps not an outstanding pho. I have had better. I have had their special combination rice noodle soup....pho number 1. This was also a very good bowl of soup. What you can expect if you go: A nice, quiet, clean place to dine, ok service, and good Vietnamese food. Nothing spectacular to be found here.....just a nice solid place. A good change from our surfeit of Mexican joints. Restaurant rating.....SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THREE-AND-THREE-QUARTER and FOUR STARS......meaning, well above average to good.
