Let me start by saying that I love Korean food - hotpot/BBQ especially - and have eaten it all over (including in Korea) for 40+ years. More than that, I enjoy not only the food itself, but the whole package that characterizes it: consistency, convenience, and unobtrusive, lightning-fast service (e.g. rice and _banchan_ being slid onto the table while you're still getting your butt in the chair is uniquely Korean; I've always found it charming.) Having said that: this place disappoints on every single metric. That makes me sad, because I *wanted* a good KBBQ place in Las Cruces... and this was so bad that I wouldn't go back if they paid me. Seriously. More than anything else, it brought to mind the image of some clueless teenager who had no service experience, bought a food joint with his parents' money, and was trying to figure it out with you as the first ever customer. Issues, just off the top of my head: 1) Hotpot/KBBQ menus are fairly standardized: two columns, price at the top of each, combo price if you want both. This mess of a menu was so confusing that I, with all my experience, got lost in it. 2) The hotpot "thing" is pretty much universal: choose the base, then go choose and mix exactly what you want from a set of frozen trays full of delightful goodies and start dunking - and go back for more when you're ready. Surprise! Here, you don't get a choice: it's ONE tray of pre-chosen stuff that *they* decided on for you plus a choice of one more meat. An Army mess hall gives you more options. I blew it off. 3) Ditto the BBQ thing: usually, you sit down, they immediately crank up the cooker and pour your tea, you go get your stuff, and start frying (because it's glowing hot by then.) NOPE! I got seated, the lady decoded the menu weirdness for me took my drink order, then walked off. Some minutes later, she came back to take my food order. Some minutes after that, a young guy came back, out the meat on the table (without any plates to eat it from, any chopsticks/forks/spoons, or any napkins on the table; when I asked, they brought one tiny plate - so I had to ask again) - and only then cranked up the heat. Call it 15 minutes wasted when it could have ALL been done in two. 4) I asked about _banchan_ (various pickled veggies Korean places usually serve along with a bowl of rice while you wait for your food), and was told "oh, we only have kimchi!" and asked if I wanted rice. When it came, both the rice and the kimchi portions were *microscopic*: maybe a tablespoon of kimchi between the two sauce-and-spice dishes and maybe a quarter cup of rice (for which I later found out there was an extra charge.) 5) I was told, proudly, that they have a FREE dessert bar. This turned out to be some sliced oranges and two types of melon - two large trays with maybe 10 tiny pieces of melon on each one. Oh, and some plastic ice cream cups. 6) The pork belly was more or less OK, but the short ribs were unbelievably greasy. For Koreans, who are better at prepping meat than damn near anyone else, that's just... awful. The whole thing plus a 15% tip - the young man *did* try to be helpful with the cookery (even though I didn't need it), but it came out as hovering and obsequious - came to ~$55. KBBQ isn't the cheapest thing in the world, and I'm usually fine with that, but being nickel-and-dimed for the iced tea and the rice on top of the usual was a little... tasteless. The whole experience left me sad, especially for people who decide to try KBBQ/hotpot for the first time and get... _this,_ the literal opposite of what it's supposed to be. We visited LA Hot Pot & BBQ shortly after they opened and had an interesting experience. It's nice to see more diverse dining options coming to Las Cruces, and hot pot is definitely something different for the area. One thing worth clarifying: this restaurant is not all-you-can-eat, even though some local posts were advertising it that way. The staff seemed surprised when we asked about it. The only unlimited items are the sauce bar (where you mix your own dipping sauces) and a small dessert station with fruit, a couple of small cakes, and ice cream. Everything else is ordered à la carte. You choose a broth base (around $4-$5) and then order plates of meats, vegetables, noodles, tofu, mushrooms, and other ingredients separately. Most items range from about $5 to $10 per plate, so the total can add up quickly depending on what you order. The sliced beef we tried was good quality, and the kids really enjoyed choosing different ingredients to cook in the pot. Hot pot is interactive and part of the fun is experimenting with combinations. The setup of the restaurant is actually very nice. Each table has built-in burners and individual pots, which works well for groups. It also appears to be a family-run restaurant, and during opening week you could hear the staff coordinating in Mandarin while trying to keep up with the rush. Service at our table was friendly, although we noticed some other tables waiting longer. The menu can be a little confusing if you've never had hot pot before, and there isn't much explanation provided. Since you cook everything yourself, it helps to go with someone who already knows how hot pot works. We did try a seafood combo, but the seafood didn't seem particularly fresh, so I'd probably recommend sticking with the meats and vegetables instead. Overall, it's a fun and interactive dining experience, especially if you've never tried hot pot before. Just keep in mind that the pricing structure means the bill can grow quickly depending on how much you order. It's still great to see Las Cruces getting more international cuisine, and the restaurant was busy during lunch with lots of people curious to try something new. read more

Great new spot to eat! I love the vibe of the place and it seems like it's being a local hot(S)pot now. They have a bar to make your own sauce for your meal and a dessert bar. The food is great. Interesting and unique dining that invites participation, collaboration, and discussions. If prepared, this can turn out to be a nice experience. But if you are hungry and have little time-this may not be the place for you. We had the Korean BBQ and the meat was quite tasty! Ice cream for dessert is good also. read more

Today, we had our first experience dining at LA Hot Pot & BBQ. It was a different kind of experience, cooking our own meals at our table. My wife had sliced chicken with udon noodles, tofu, corn and mushrooms in a golden chicken broth and I had sliced beef, udon noodles and mushrooms in a golden chicken broth. Both of our meals were good. We did add a few sauces and ingredients to our meals from their sauce bar. For dessert, they provided fruit, cookies, cake and a selection of ice cream/sherbet. First time so the menu was a bit confusing, but we muddled through. We ended up with the combo (with sliced beef and mushroom choices) and short ribs. The combo is a variety of mostly processed meat, faux crab meat, shrimp, quail eggs, etc. The beef short ribs and sliced beef were extremely fatty (about 70%) and we wouldn't do that again. I thought the flavors were good, but we would do things very differently next time and not order any beef, just veggies. Our bill came out to $66 without drinks (plus tip), and we left very full. Was excited when a hot pot place opened in Las Cruces but was disappointed when I found out it was A La Carte. Besides the strange table setup that makes eating the broth difficult and the heat control panel obstructing your knees, the food quality is subpar for the price. Felt like I spent a lot of money for little food. At least there is a desserts bar I guess. read more

Order was taken but they never came back with my food. I asked the host but was just told to wait and someone will follow up. I had already ordered, though. Didn't make sense. I hope that this is a teaching moment. I lived in Korea for several years and can say that the food was okay. However when my husband and I arrived, we were seated at a table that had menus only; no silverware, plates, or napkins, or directions where to find the items. After the waitress explained that we would cook our own food, we still were not offered utensils to cook or eat our food. My husband had to find the waitress, who was sitting and chatting with other staff members, to assist us. When another couple arrived, they were immediately given what was needed to prepare their meal. The restaurant has a very pleasant atmosphere. However, customer service must be improved to succeed in your business. I am not mad at you; just disappointed. Occasionally, we drive to El Paso to enjoy Korean cuisine.
