I was craving Vietnamese food today, and after doing some research, I found this place that claimed to be authentic and traditional Vietnamese. I honestly don't even know where to start. I already knew the area wasn't the best looking area, so that part didn't surprise me. But the restaurant itself was something I had never experienced before in NYC. But this was by far the dirtiest restaurant I've ever been to in New York City. I genuinely wonder how the health department hasn't shut this place down. The walls near the kitchen and bathroom were disgusting, the tables were dirty, and if you sit near the kitchen, you can literally see the staff grabbing basil leaves and bean sprouts with their bare hands to serve customers. No gloves, no tongs, nothing. I was honestly speechless about the hygiene situation. At one point, a waitress brought herself a summer roll, stood right next to our table, grabbed sauce from another customer's table, and started eating while standing there. There was so much going on in that place that I honestly can't even explain it properly. If you ask me about the food itself, I don't think it was bad. But at the same time, I can't give a fair opinion because my brain simply wouldn't let me enjoy the meal peacefully while constantly noticing the chaos and lack of cleanliness around me. I love pho with a passion and this has always been my favorite go tos...it's a cash only restaurant so bring your cash!! The dishes are affordable and the service is always super quick! The workers speak mostly vietnamese and English and are very direct with their communication. Culantro (Eryngium foetidum) My favorite pho place in Queens switched to culantro from the usual Asian basil as fresh herb garnish. Culantro is a long narrow leaf with sawtooth edges. I haven't seen this in the Northern Philippines. It doesn't look appetizing in this picture but it does taste good, as if the crinkles were intended to make it more flavorful (has to fact check this assumption). I like culantro. We ordered quite a lot between the three of us which rendered a "wow" from the server. Definitely try their Bo Luc Lac if you like rice and beef. The marinated pork was thinner than I remembered though they still have several pieces. The fried spring rolls were decent. The veg mixed in with the bun (rice vermicelli) were fresh and I enjoyed my meal. As many have mentioned, cash only. I haven't been inside their bathrooms since pre-fire so can't comment on these. They're not winning any awards for having the cleanest floor though post-fire the ground is not quite the greasy slip-and-slide it was prior. Despite their questionable level of floor cleanliness, I will say that I've never gotten ill from eating food here (knock on wood), and generally tables look manageably clean. Came here one day for a quick bite. The set up of this place was very quick, they already have menus set up on all of the clean tables so you go in and seat yourself. Soon after, a waiter came and took our order. We ate and paid up front. The food was really good as well. Pho is always nice and comforting! You definitely get your moneys worth! It was actually too much for me haha and I didn't end up finishing it. When it's time to pay the bill, they actually do it differently here. Normally in restaurants, the waiter brings you the bill and you pay and wait for your money back and then you tip. Here, this doesn't happen- they make you go up to the front of the restaurant to the cashier and then go back to your seats to give the tip- eyeing you like a hawk the entire time to make sure you don't leave without giving a tip, even if you were already planning to tip them well for the speedy food service. The place is literally filthy and the dishes and tables are covered with food bits and greasy finger prints. I wasn't expecting much since most Sunset Park and Chinatown joints have very bland and salty broths that don't fully properly represent the 16 hours of labour that the broths usually take. Upon entering, I was directed immediately to what would be a communal table with other solo stragglers trying to get their pho fix. Service was quick all around, and it took a total of three minutes for my regular sized pho to get to me. It came in the usual way with a side of bean sprouts, wedge of lemon, and thai basil leaf. Also, Pho Bang has no awareness of the Sriracha shortage, and the bottles were not in short supply, so I went to town. The bowl I got was 11.50$ which is a complete bargain for the dac biet (special) that comes with everything (though it was missing the beef meatballs, which are usually not my favourite anyway). You can opt for a small or large for about a dollar and a half more or less. The broth was some of the best I've had in the city from a mom and pop shop. My only gripe was that I would have liked for the soup to be more scalding hot, but I think it was the perfect hot temperature to slightly cook the raw beef slices.
