If I stayed here at Portland longer than one week, I would eat here every. single. day, except for Wednesday & Sunday (closed) but ya the reasons, so I can try their daily soup specials. I had Rose VL Deli bookmarked during my daughter's college days, when I visited her, but never made it, til this recent trip. Omg, first time and I loved my experience, looking back at the pictures I just posted, I can remember both soups so clearly and it was really authentic & so good! I just loved our first time visit & can't wait to be back. My personal notes for Rose VL, this business has been around for 30+ years, only has 2-3 different soups as daily special - this way the cooks/chef can focus on just those soups for the day, don't expect an entire menu of all the different soups, rice dishes, appetizers. Closed twice a week and only open til 4pm. It was the perfect sweater weather for soup, while visiting PNW on a Friday and the specials for that day: Bun Rieu, shrimpcake noodle soup- $17., Chicken Pho- $17., & Fermented Fish Noodle Soup- $19.. It was a hard decision to make amongst the 3 so I went with Bun Rieu and the Fermented Fish Noodle soup. The limited appetizers which I didn't get to try since we barely could finish the 2 bowls of noodle soup. It took awhile for our bowls of soup, understandable since they were busy! When it finally arrived, WOW. excited and scared, because it would be our very first time trying the fermented fish soup, I remembered my mom always order this and I avoid it but today will finally be the day to try. hehe. The fermented fish noodle soup comes with vermicelli noodles, roast pork, shrimp and seasonal fish. It didn't have that strong smell of fermented shrimp paste, it was actually very light. I absolutely loved this soup trying for first time. I would def. get this soup again! Loved the vermicelli noodles, not overcooked and it was just the right noodle for this soup. We had leftovers, packed it for the hotel and enjoyed later that night, still so good! The Bun Rieu came with all the fixings, shrimp loaf, sliced pork, vietnamese ham, tofu and tomatoes with thin vermicelli noodles, the only items missing were the pigs feet, blood cube, and shrimp instead of shrimp loaf. Every style of Bun Rieu is different but as long as they have the main stuff, no complaints! This style of soup is very tasty too, sure enjoyed it! I took my time enjoying every bite/slurp. so good! I can't enjoy my food without the satay sauce which they brought out some upon request, loved it! The Vietnamese iced coffee was very nice and strong and not on sweet side, it was the perfect drink to end this tasty meal. Oh and Service was excellent, staff super friendly! All in all, I am so happy I finally got to try Rose VL. I am adding Rose VL to my PNW list to go back again, and try the other noodle dishes!

Food: They only have two Pho options that they rotate. Today, we had the beef Pho. 3.5/5 (I would have given it 3/5 but my wife would have given it 4/5) Although my wife really liked it, I feel that I enjoy Pho Hung on Powell much better. The broth wasn't as rich and the meatballs were a tiny bit tough. Service: Definitely felt like a Mom & Pop store. :) Ambiance: Feels like we're gonna have a home cooked meal in a Vietnamese Home. :)

I had the mi quang and it was absolutely delicious. Mi quang is a tumeric pork and shrimp noodle soup dish and is my favorite Vietnamese dish that I had growing up. I was excited to see that Rose VL had executed my favorite Vietnamese dish so well. The broth was tasty and flavor was well balanced and divine; I finished every drop. The shrimp, pork, and noodles were perfectly cooked. Service was fast and excellent, and environment was pretty casual. I definitely recommend Rose VL Deli.

We were so glad we came on a Saturday, they have their famous Mi Quang. Hubby tried their Cao Lau, it was very good as well. We also tried their Durian smoothie. I would not recommend this, they're using powdered durian. I know of a place that uses real durian fruit. I'll stick to that. Overall, you can't beat their soups. Very flavorful! You would want to come back everyday to try them all! If only they give you more of the chili sauce. I asked for more but they gave me only a little bit.

Lover took me here for a random Tuesday lunch date because I'd been craving SoCal pho for weeks. Was super surprised to see a restaurant with revolving daily menu here in Portland! The service is absolutely wonderful. The Viet ladies here made me feel like I was back in L.A. and I loved every minute of it. But onto the food! Beef Pho: I was so excited that Tuesday just happened to be pho day because I had been craving it for the longest time! But I was so sad that the flavors weren't all there. The broth just didn't have that voluptuous beef flavor I'd been yearning for and left me craving pho even more! But they did serve my bowl up with plenty of meat and noodles! Just wish it satisfied my craving. VL Special Noodle Soup: this was a 10 for sure. It had that typical chiu chow noodle soup flavor I grew up eating in the SGV. The broth was super flavorful and their bowl was filled with so many toppings. This is definitely a bowl of noodles I'd happily come back for anytime! Goi Cuon: Shrimp and BBQ Pork Spring Rolls (or as the PNWers like to call it: Summer Rolls) a bit pricey at $8 for 2 rolls. Sauce was pretty tasty but I don't know if I'd get this again for the price. Iced Coffee with condensed milk: another 10. Coffee was rich and milky. It had that distinct roasted hazelnut flavor that brings me back to Saigon. Absolutely delish. Restaurant is pretty cozy. Probably had no more than 10 tables. I'll definitely be back to try the other dishes one day!

    Empty liver bowl.

The food as always was outstanding. Like a lot of restaurants in Asia the do not have a wide menu every day...but what they do is great. I am not a liver fan but I decided about a year ago I decided to explore when possible foods I had decided years ago that I hated. So they cheerfully added a slice of liver on the side. I ate it. I will try it again. Service...excellent and they cheerfully brought me the liver on the side. Love the people there. Ambiance: A busy soup kitchen!! Wonderful! (Aside Note: My wife's top is from Brain Dead...kind of an international group of designers and our son...in fashion in NYC...insisted we get some...so we did.)

The chicken pho was the best I ever had. A rich depth of chicken flavor, yet still clean and subtle. A very nice hint of sweetness to finish. Chicken perfectly cut plump. I didn't know chicken pho could be so good.

Finally got to visit! Stopped by on a Tuesday afternoon around 3pm. It was empty when we arrived but there were 4 other tables dining by the time we left. Got the VL special Phnom Penh noodle soup and a beef pho. Staff was so friendly, nice and attentive. Everything was delicious. My one critique is my soup for the special Phnom Penh noodle could've been hotter - I like my soup piping hot. My sister's beef pho broth was delicious and hotter. Also got an iced Vietnamese coffee to go. Would definitely come back to try more of the menu.

Unbelievable Pho awaits you at Rose VL Deli. The concept is simply genius. Only 2 or 3 different kinds of Pho offered daily. Each one has its own character and nuances and checking out their weekly menu, there are some unique soup bases that sounds tantalizing. The taste is refined, full of umami, and the depth of flavours are amazing. Nothing was overpowering. Aromatic garnishes and toppings were fresh and we loved that each bowl comes with its own variation of chili condiments to elevate the eating experience to another level. Everything was very balanced and the noodles were at the right texture and doneness. The portion size was just right. Nothing beats an awesome bowl of hot Pho in the morning, especially one made with this much quality.

Finally reviewing one of my go-to restaurants. Just like its sister restaurants, HA & VL, and Annam VL (newest addition), they cycle through different noodle soup every day and only offer a couple noodle soup options a day. Every broth I've tried so far has its own distinct flavor, and all are just as good and flavorful as the next. You can't go to a VL restaurant once. You have to try at least a couple of their offerings to really appreciate their craft.

    Cao Lau Saturday Special Soup
    David T.

Love this place. Was recommend by a friend, as I was in search of a good Vietnamese restaurant moving from Southern California, which is a Mecca for Vietnamese cuisine, and Rose VL did not disappoint. Working with a rotation menu, each day offers a different special that you can find only on that day. While I haven't been on any other day than Saturday, I will keep going back for the Cao Lau. The use of udon noodles is such a brilliant idea. During COVID, we would order to-go and eat at home, which was so good to keep us coming back. But when I tell you that eating at the restaurant takes the flavor to a whole new level, does it do that. The soup on the side is pho broth and paired with the noodles, veggies and pork, I highly recommend.

    Soup of the day ;)
    Ben C.

Simple soups of the day, nothing more or less. Simple seating, small area. A couple dollars more than average, due to the JB certificate. Service was eh, the only interaction was the owner asking what we thought of the soup in a questionable tone. Fast food atmosphere, meaning they want you to eat your food fast. If you take down their James Beard recognition, Rose VL would be your everyday pho warm up. Hard to distinguish award winning good, but definitely PDX rainy day good. In and out.

Make sure you find the menu and check what they are selling for the day. They will usually have 2 kinds of noodles they serve with different broth and topping. . What brought me here was, I wanted to come here and try the curry chicken vietnamese pho style, but they only serve that on Fri and Sat. . They have family restaurants a total of 3 or 4, but only this location open on Monday. . When I walked in around 3, they had 2 options of pho. I chose the pho ga which is chicken noodle soup. . Pho broth is savory, clean, comforting, and flavorful. My white friends doesn't understand why it is good when I told them. So they watched me eat. And then they finally had a sip of the broth they were like wow. It's good chicken broth and my second favorite I have taste. My all time favorite is still in Sacramento ca, pho anh dao for chicken pho. . Price was 16.50 for the pho which is high. The quality of the bowl of soup and noodles really made up for it. During the whole trip I needed something comforting, I was missing my soups and asian eats. . Overall it was casual restaurant for a lone eating experience. There is a nice parking lot with free parking. Hope this review helps and let me know what you like or I missed out on while in portland. Thanks for reading. Have a yelptastic day. . Chicken is well done and white meat . Rice noodle 16.50

With that being said, I do think that the food could use a bit more work. The restaurant is called Luc Lac, and so naturally I ordered their namesake dish. The beef was not very tender or juicy and the flavors overall seemed to be lacking. Portion sizes, however, are very generous, so I'll give them that. I tried the Durian Horchata and sadly could not taste any durian flavor. I know that durian can be an acquired taste (and smell), but the drink just tasted like a regular horchata with some hints of pandan. Maybe I will return to try their cocktails.

Downtown Portland's hidden gem for authentic Vietnamese!…read more I was walking around downtown Portland and stumbled upon Cuốn Vietnamese Street Food, and honestly, it was the best meal of my week . If you are looking for fresh, flavorful, and satisfying comfort food, do not walk--run to this spot. To get the full experience, we ordered a variety, and every single item was a hit. We started with the Beef Pho, and the broth was the absolute star. It was rich, aromatic, and deeply savory, clearly simmered for hours. It was the perfect dish on a sunny Portland day. We also grabbed a Chicken Banh Mi. The bread had that perfect crispy crust with a soft, airy crumb, and the chicken was grilled to perfection with fresh veggies and herbs. Of course, we had to wash it all down with a creamy, sweet Thai Tea--it was delicious and the perfect end to the meal. Beyond the food, the vibe is great. It's a super clean, casual spot with big windows letting in lots of natural light. It's set up for quick counter service, which makes it perfect for a fast lunch downtown, but the staff is so friendly and welcoming that you feel right at home. It's a family-run business, and you can taste the passion in the food. Highlights: · The Pho Broth: Seriously some of the best in the city. · The Banh Mi: Fresh bread, great fillings. · The Service: Fast, efficient, and incredibly kind. Pro Tip: Don't forget to grab your own utensils and sauces (the chili crisp is a must for the pho), and help yourself to the free self-serve hot tea. It's the little touches like that which make this place a winner. I am already planning my next trip back to try the Crispy Pork Belly. Highly recommend

Positives: fresh, well made, very flavorful proteins. Cons:…read morePrice I tried Cuon for the first time and enjoyed it. I went for a Vermicelli bowl where you get to pick 2 proteins. I selected Pork Belly (their specialty) and lemongrass chicken. The bowl itself is standard Vietnamese fare, nothing special, creative or exciting in that sense. That said, the ingredients tasted fresh and the proteins were very well seasoned and cooked. The pork belly skin had an awesome crunch and you can clearly taste the lemongrass in the chicken. The included spring roll had nice crunch but little flavor. Unfortunately, outside of Pho, Banh Mi and Noodle Bowls, there's sadly not much else to the menu. No Vietnamese salads, stir frys, etc. Either way, what they do make, they seem to make quite well. So, on to my main issue ie, that for a place thats only open for lunch, the prices are a bit too high. I noted about $16 for a Banh Mi sandwich, no sides. Pho was around $20 and my noodle bowl was about $20 as well. Weirdly, its about the same prices as eating lunch back home in Miami, a FAR more expensive city in general. In fact, I've often had more exciting Vietnamese in Manhattan for lower prices. So while its easy to recommend Cuon on quality, its not a top recommendation for lunch value in the PDX which is why Im docking 1 star.
