Came here for lunch on the way back to Seattle from Willamette with a friend that has been here and to their sister locations. Service is so friendly from beginning to end. Genuinely kind you can tell they care about their customers. They only usually serve two entrees a day so look a head and select the day you want to try a particular dish. We visited a Monday so it was CHICKEN PHO - Phở Gà and PEPPERY PORK BALL NOODLE SOUP Bún Mọc which run $18 each. I had the Pho Ga and my friend had the Bun Moc. We shared the spring rolls and both of us had Vietnamese coffee I don't usually drink coffee that late in the day specially Vietnamese but sounded so good. And it was worth possibly losing sleep over. I really enjoyed their spring rolls they didn't have rice noodles which was nice more veggies with the shrimp. The noodle soups were delicious flavorful but clean. Located in a strip mall space with parking. space was clean and bright with a number of tables to dine in not a real big space but definitely a good lunch spot. If I stayed here at Portland longer than one week, I would eat here every. single. day, except for Wednesday & Sunday (closed) but ya the reasons, so I can try their daily soup specials. I had Rose VL Deli bookmarked during my daughter's college days, when I visited her, but never made it, til this recent trip. Omg, first time and I loved my experience, looking back at the pictures I just posted, I can remember both soups so clearly and it was really authentic & so good! I just loved our first time visit & can't wait to be back. My personal notes for Rose VL, this business has been around for 30+ years, only has 2-3 different soups as daily special - this way the cooks/chef can focus on just those soups for the day, don't expect an entire menu of all the different soups, rice dishes, appetizers. Closed twice a week and only open til 4pm. It was the perfect sweater weather for soup, while visiting PNW on a Friday and the specials for that day: Bun Rieu, shrimpcake noodle soup- $17., Chicken Pho- $17., & Fermented Fish Noodle Soup- $19.. It was a hard decision to make amongst the 3 so I went with Bun Rieu and the Fermented Fish Noodle soup. The limited appetizers which I didn't get to try since we barely could finish the 2 bowls of noodle soup. It took awhile for our bowls of soup, understandable since they were busy! When it finally arrived, WOW. excited and scared, because it would be our very first time trying the fermented fish soup, I remembered my mom always order this and I avoid it but today will finally be the day to try. hehe. The fermented fish noodle soup comes with vermicelli noodles, roast pork, shrimp and seasonal fish. It didn't have that strong smell of fermented shrimp paste, it was actually very light. I absolutely loved this soup trying for first time. I would def. get this soup again! Loved the vermicelli noodles, not overcooked and it was just the right noodle for this soup. We had leftovers, packed it for the hotel and enjoyed later that night, still so good! The Bun Rieu came with all the fixings, shrimp loaf, sliced pork, vietnamese ham, tofu and tomatoes with thin vermicelli noodles, the only items missing were the pigs feet, blood cube, and shrimp instead of shrimp loaf. Every style of Bun Rieu is different but as long as they have the main stuff, no complaints! This style of soup is very tasty too, sure enjoyed it! I took my time enjoying every bite/slurp. so good! I can't enjoy my food without the satay sauce which they brought out some upon request, loved it! The Vietnamese iced coffee was very nice and strong and not on sweet side, it was the perfect drink to end this tasty meal. Oh and Service was excellent, staff super friendly! All in all, I am so happy I finally got to try Rose VL. I am adding Rose VL to my PNW list to go back again, and try the other noodle dishes! read more

Today, we had the beef Pho. 3.5/5 (I would have given it 3/5 but my wife would have given it 4/5) Although my wife really liked it, I feel that I enjoy Pho Hung on Powell much better. I had the mi quang and it was absolutely delicious. Mi quang is a tumeric pork and shrimp noodle soup dish and is my favorite Vietnamese dish that I had growing up. I was excited to see that Rose VL had executed my favorite Vietnamese dish so well. The broth was tasty and flavor was well balanced and divine; I finished every drop. Lover took me here for a random Tuesday lunch date because I'd been craving SoCal pho for weeks. Was super surprised to see a restaurant with revolving daily menu here in Portland! Just wish it satisfied my craving. VL Special Noodle Soup: this was a 10 for sure. It had that typical chiu chow noodle soup flavor I grew up eating in the SGV. The broth was super flavorful and their bowl was filled with so many toppings. This is definitely a bowl of noodles I'd happily come back for anytime! Goi Cuon: Shrimp and BBQ Pork Spring Rolls (or as the PNWers like to call it: Summer Rolls) a bit pricey at $8 for 2 rolls. Sauce was pretty tasty but I don't know if I'd get this again for the price. Iced Coffee with condensed milk: another 10. Coffee was rich and milky. It had that distinct roasted hazelnut flavor that brings me back to Saigon. Absolutely delish. Restaurant is pretty cozy. Probably had no more than 10 tables. I am not a liver fan but I decided about a year ago I decided to explore when possible foods I had decided years ago that I hated. So they cheerfully added a slice of liver on the side. I ate it. I stopped by on a Saturday at 2pm and the Turmeric Chicken noodles were sold out, so I got the Chicken Curry Noodle Soup and the Cao Lau with an ice coffee and tofu salad rolls to go. Just like its sister restaurants, HA & VL, and Annam VL (newest addition), they cycle through different noodle soup every day and only offer a couple noodle soup options a day. This is one of the sibling restaurants that only serves a few soups a day but is inestimable. This is home style comfort food at its finest. Staff is friendly and food comes out quick. Not a ton of space inside but you'll likely find a table with a small group. Everyday is two different soups and the day we went was won ton noodle and chicken curry with a baguette. Both are great cold weather meals. The won ton noodle has thin egg noodles, some thinly sliced bbq pork and peppery pork won tons in a clean yet thicker chicken based broth. Homey and comforting, especially if you're sick. The curry was our favorite though. Little kick with super tender chicken, dip the baguette over and over and over again. Was recommend by a friend, as I was in search of a good Vietnamese restaurant moving from Southern California, which is a Mecca for Vietnamese cuisine, and Rose VL did not disappoint. My wife is Vietnamese. So it's always nice to see her enjoy a little chat with the proprietors while enjoying authentically prepared dishes. I love Portland's Vietnamese food scene and this spot is unique in how they have different items for different days of the week. We came on Tuesday so they were serving their beef pho and hu tieu nam vang. We decided to get both dishes and share them family style. This was my first time trying hu tieu nam vang and it was packed with so much different meats and flavor. This was my favorite of the two. My apologies to Rose VL, I've been coming here for years, but somehow have never reviewed it. This place is the epitome of doing one thing, and doing it really well. Each day they have a soup special, along with one other soup, and that's about it, except for salad rolls. The soups have never failed to impress, whether I've gone for the special, or not. My most recent visit, the one that prompted this review, was the first time I've ever done a take-out order. The pandemic has made them experts at packaging a bundle that you assemble at home: a container of broth, a bowl with noodles, hoisin sauce and sriracha packets, and perhaps some meat, a baggie with additional meat if appropriate, another baggie with onions and green onions, and a final baggie with lime wedge, cilantro, Thai basil, and bean sprouts. My experience does not match the reviews. I went there for the first time today. The only food on the menu are two noodle soups (beef and beef/shrimp/fish/pork) and salad rolls (choose shrimp, tofu, pork or combination). Ordered the beef pho and my partner ordered the shrimp salad rolls. We each tried the other, of course. The salad rolls and peanut sauce seemed fine. The pho tasted ok, especially after I added some hoisin sauce, but the meat seemed overcooked. Edited my review. It wasn't as bad as I thought. I also had coffee. My friends ordered the turmeric soup and I split the Cao Lao Noodle and pork and shrimp fresh rolls with another friend. The portions are great and splitting the meal was a great idea. The fish chunks were fine but truthfully couldn't appreciate the fermented flavors and in itself tasted a bit bland? The noodles were usual rice noodles. Came here a few months ago on a Tuesday and was soooo glad that I didn't go any other day of the week. This little deli has 2-3 entree (mostly soup and noodle) selections daily on a rotating menu. On Tuesdays, they serve Hu tieu, which is their signature! The broth was packed with umami flavor and the salad rolls were also delicious and they made them so pretty. I actually only ordered them because I saw the table next to us order it. I really loved the fact that their salad rolls aren't stuffed with noodles. There was only a little bit of noodles and much more lettuce than other places, which was perfect to me! The coffee could have been a little stronger, but it was still tasty. Friday Menu Review! The fermented fish noodle soup is phenomenal! The flavor of the soup is not like anything I've ever had before. I love the various proteins in it and overall I was super happy with this dish and would 1000% recommend it. My only critique with this dish is I'm not too fond of the pork belly in it. The skin got a little soggy. As for the shrimp cake soup, it was good but not my favorite. I found the meat in it a little dry. It really is true that the SE has the best food. This spot came highly recommended by a friend who discovered it through his other friend. His friend apparently ate here every week without fail. So much so that when he left to move out of state, he had his last meal here. We came in for lunch on a perfect Saturday right before we took off on a mushroom hunting adventure. We decided to share the BBQ & shrimp wrap and each got whatever was on special for the day. I'm here for them only serving 2 items per day. There were a couple of days when 4 mains were served. The dipping sauce that came with the wrap was honestly the best I've ever had in my life. Hands down. My noodle order was equally just as good. I cleaned up that bowl for sure. After reading about this spot for years I was so glad to be able finally eat here when visiting some friends. We got there around 9am and there was plenty of seats. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I kind of felt like I was meeting a celebrity when I saw the owner and his family. I shared some chicken curry noodles and turmeric noodles with a friend and we both loved them. This is Asian comfort food to the max!!! The chicken curry had round rice noodles with great chew and bounce. The chili salt they give you as a dipping sauce takes it to the next level. The Thai bird chilis packed a big punch so use them sparingly. The turmeric noodles were wider and flat, similar to pappardelle. Loved the combo of seafood and pork. I had a wonderful conversation with the management while I was waiting for my to-go order. He offered me his concoction of tea which was amazing and comforting as we chatted, he shared they just opened up a 3rd location with different menu items! Definitely one I'd love to check out. I got the Pepper Pork noodles which is one of my favorites on the menu. I've never been a big chicken pho person. The noodles for the pork are a thick type of bun, and the pieces of meat were full of umami and flavorful. I love this dish because its filled with protein, noodz, and vegetables.
