I recently moved to the Portland area and have been on the hunt for my favorite Vietnamese restaurant. So far, this has been my favorite! One thing that is unique is their rotating menu, which gives us plenty of reasons to come back and try different dishes. We arrived late afternoon on a Saturday and they were out of pho. Originally, I was disappointed, but it ended up being a blessing in disguise. Instead, I got the wonton soup, and it was delicious. I'm normally not too big of a fan of wontons, but these ones were more pork forward (rather than shrimp), which I liked. We'll definitely order this again! They have a rotating menu every day, so we tried the Friday "Mom's Hometown Favorite" It was so incredibly rich in flavor and perfect for the chilly weather. We came first thing in the morning on a weekend and it was nice and quiet! Parking on the street was easy. They have a small but very cozy dining room. Only complaint is the smell (maybe incense?) was a little overpowering. My asthmatic lungs were sensitive and I was coughing to the point that I thought I'd have to leave and order takeout, but thankfully I got over it. I've been here several times for day service (rotating soups), which are delicious, but this review is for their night service, Annam By Night. Annam By Night is a limited run of evening dining, with a menu inspired by Vietnamese drinking culture. Think shared plates, grilled meats, wraps and rolls, appetizers, all shared over glasses of beer! They have fun cocktails and mocktails as well. Annam By Night is seasonal, so you'll have to check out their instagram to see if they're serving this menu for the season. The menu also changes often. Review for Annam By Night menu as of 6/14/2025 Bun cha bites (pork patties/meatballs and DIY wraps) (5/5) - bun cha is currently my favorite Vietnamese dish, and this did not disappoint! The meatballs were seasoned perfectly and not too dry or crumbly. I asked for birds eye chilis on the side for some extra spice. My only complaint is there's no slices of pork belly under the meatballs like most places that serve bun cha. But this was plenty of food to share! I talked to the chef, who said the nuoc mam is supposed to be lemongrass infused for his dish but they had run out by the time I ordered so they served it with regular nuoc mam. Still delicious! Bo nuong vi (make your own spring rolls with lemongrass beef) (5/5) - lemongrass beef comes out on a sizzling plate and this comes served with a giant plate of veggies and some rice paper. Hau nuong (grilled oysters) (4/5) - I'm not sure why I always ordered grilled oysters everywhere I go despite not particularly enjoying grilled oysters (it's a texture thing for me sorry!!) that being said, this had a great flavor from the green onions. Goi sua (jellyfish salad) (794617562/5) - I've never met a jellyfish salad I didn't love. This one tasted like Vietnamese slaw!! And I'm obsessed with the shrimp crackers that's served with this. The crackers had a zesty shrimp and lime seasoning that really reminded me of tom yum snacks, however, Chef An confirmed that tom yum and this flavor are indeed significantly different. read more

After looking at the menus of all 3 restaurants, I decided to visit Annam VL to try the Bun Bo Hue. Coming from the Bay Area, I grew up eating Bun Bo Hue, so I had my hopes up for how Annam VL would compare. The Bun Bo Hue here was decent. I could taste the flavors coming from the simmer beef bones; however, I found the broth to be a bit light on flavor compared to back home. Perhaps if the broth were reduced more, it would have been perfect. I was also hoping to find more toppings for bun bo hue such as the pork blood cubes and the pork knuckles. The banana blossom was a nice addition that added more texture to the soup. Pros: Fast, friendly service. I came here a while ago on a Sunday morning, and was grateful to have gotten a spot. I've come multiple times before that but was out of luck because they were already sold out. So, I highly recommend coming as early as you can to ensure that you can get a bowl of whatever delicious food they're serving! The inside is bright with lots of natural lighting but has limited seating in comparison to the popularity of the restaurant. When I came here, I got the banh it tran and spring rolls for appetizers and the specials of the day (banh canh cha tom & bun bo hue). I loved the banh it tran and thought that the BBH was also really good. I was a bit underwhelmed from the spring rolls and the banh canh as I found that they just weren't *satisfying* (ie. the banh canh didn't have much other than the fish balls). It was a waiting game. Tried the bot chien and Banh khot appetizers. The bot chien was super thin and over fried. There was no texture from the rice flour or tapioca starch. Some pieces were extra burnt. Only one egg that barely added any flavor to the dish. The sauce was tiny and not enough to dip each bite. Overall not great at $16 for fried flour and an egg. I've had it before at a different place and it tasted more like crispy potatoes (fluffy inside) with scrambled eggs. Filling and satisfying. Banh knot looked beautiful but wasn't crispy around the edges. Nice fresh herbs and lettuce but another $16 dish that was underwhelming. Came here for dinner and left hungry. Seems like a young crowd good spot to drink shots of henny but didn't satisfy. The young chefs tried their best but it was disappointing. Probably won't be back to try the soups in the daytime. Somewhere I came across the recipe for Vietnamese beef stew, Bo Kho. It has cinnamon as a spice with a little tomato. So I'm trying it at restaurants before doing the recipe at home. Here they cook the broth for 4-5 hours. Then they assemble the dish with the beef, carrots, and wheat noodles. Chili oil, jalapeño, bean sprouts, basil and fresh lime come as a garnish. I ordered mine without the cilantro and raw onions on top. This is the perfect warming soup. Carrots in stews and soup are a natural sweetener. The beef was tender. The wheat noodles are very hot when the soup is assembled, maintaining the heat of the dish. The tomato flavor was just right, not overwelming. The soup is not cayenne spiced; there is chili oil you can add on the side. Portland loves independent small businesses. This is a family business with the grown children working front of house. They are very proud of their family and display some traditional figures he brought. There are some solid picnic tables outside and tables for 2 to 4+ inside.
