Context: Dined in for dinner What I got: Crispy Chicken Pad Thai (4.5/10) Although the crispy chicken was quite good and complimented the sauce that came with it, I actively disliked the noodles. The dish was far too sweet and neither the meat nor any hot sauce I added was able to drown it out. I also found the noodles to be slightly overcooked, although that wasn't really an issue compared to how off the flavor was. Final Comment: I would come here again to try the Vietnamese side of their menu, as I have heard good things about it. It may be a bit unfair to base my opinion off of a Thai dish, but that's all I really have to work with, and to be fair, they did advertise themselves as a Thai and Vietnamese restaurant. Best thai food ive ever had! Small but cozy space. We went around 830pm and had no wait. Parking in area was tough but you can find a few spots on wkends where you wont get a ticket.. The food was so fresh and tasty i was amazed. Service was fast and waitress was attentive and other staff was helpful also. We ordered a small bowl of chicken pho which was huge and the best soup ive ever had. Light fresh and simlply delish! Thai basil chicken fried rice was a great first try for me. A bit spicy, crispy chicken and the lightest and freshest rice ive ever had. The taste was so flavorful, if i hadnt been so full id easily eat the whole plate lol Crispy spring rolls were good too, however the order only came with 3 pieces. But thats just enough of your sharing other food. Thai calamari was another first but a pleasant treat. Crispy, fresh and yummy paired with the spicy chilly sauce and sweet duck sauce. My issue is they have been messing up my orders lately and the people that answer the phone do not understand English. I people I know and they know me by name are great. Lunch on Columbus Day w/ two children - large bowl of pho with rare beef - great broth, nice crispy bean sprouts and basil and nice slices of rare beef. Excellent and a large order was sufficient to share w/ the family. Sweet-n-Sour Chicken - fresh veggies - beans, peppers, yellow squash, mushrooms, nice sweet tangy orange color sauce, with slices of chicken and a bowl of white rice. Very nice dish, kids enjoyed. Pad Thai with chicken - another nice dish - fresh sprouts, peanut sauce and peanuts overwhelming and the noodles were ample and not overcooked. Also, a dish of samosas - hot and crispy. I'm not sure what other people are talking about but the price of this food is expensive. It looks cheap but $7 for 3 small egg rolls is a joke. Ordered three different appetizers and each one was smaller than the next. The crab rangoon literally had 4 miniature rangoon. The pho was delicious! What made this four instead of 5 stars was just the pushy service. But the food... Yum!! We got the fried spring rolls for appetizers - crispy, delicious sauce. Not a lot of filling, but we were in the mood for fried stuff anyway. The dac biet was delicious - the soup has a cleaner tasting base, and the meat was presented beautifully. I went to this decent Thai/Vietnamese place with a couple of really interesting and cool people for lunch. They were offering this $6.95 lunch special where you could order various Thai/Vietnamese rice/noodle dishes. For an additional $2, you can add an appetizer which consists of soup, salad, a wonton dumpling and two tiny pieces of what appears to be crispy dumplings. I decided to get the Pad Thai with Pork. The lady got the Vietnamese Fried Rice, which is known as the Com Chien, while I believe the dude got the Pad Kra Pow, which consists of some chicken, mixed peppers and a spiced up sauce. It comes with rice. The soup was pretty good, liked the wakame inside. The vegetables of the salad were fairly fresh. The dumplings were fairly decent and the sauces were pretty good. As for the Pad Thai, the noodles were tasty, but the pork was a little dry and needed to be more tender. I did like the flavor of the Pad Thai, but I think they could do a little better. The lady and the dude seemed to have really liked their dishes and we had a great time catching up while enjoying our food. I did get my stomach fairly full, mainly because of spending the extra $2 on the appetizer. Interior was pretty good, a decent choice to set up an inexpensive lunch appointment. Overall, this place is at a great location, within walking distance of Fenway, Newbury Street, Back Bay, Symphony Hall, and the Christian Science Plaza. We stopped by this restaurant in one of the coldest and snowiest days in Boston. It was about 0° today. I turn my brother onto pho for the first time. We got seated immediately this was certainly the place to come to because it was packed house. They took our order very promptly and I think it came out in less than 10 minutes even as busy as they were. The accommodations were tight but comfortable enough. Parking is certainly a problem in Boston and when it's busy it makes it worse. There is a parking garage nearby but it's rather costly. The staff was very nice and honestly we were there long enough to take advantage of the good service. The price was right! $9.95 for a bowl of pho that filled us up and didn't break the bank. The photo was on par with when the top places I've been to for Pho. We ordered the pho tai. Steak cooked to a nice medium rare in the soup.If you like though I would recommend stopping in at pho Basil. You won't be disappointed. read more

Tragic that it took me so long to visit this place, this is really a quality restaurant. First off, it seems like they have some great lunch deals here- I came a little later in the day, so I wasn't able to access them since they end at around 3:00 PM or something. However, they seem to be a lot of the same items on the regular menu, but like a good 1-2$ dollars cheaper, so definitely come here during lunch time. The servers here are all pretty nice, and even though it got a little busy, I felt they were pretty good with coming by to my table quickly, along with water or everything like that. I ordered a bun cha, which was different from what I was normally used to. Typically, the bun cha that I order is like.. a bowl of vermicelli noodles with pork, spring rolls, and fresh vegetables all arranged on top, along with a sweet/spicy kind of dressing that you can put on top. However, the version that I ordered here was actually different, since they actually give you rice rolls and expect you to dip it. Basically how it worked was that you had to dip your rice roll into hot water in order to make it soft. Then, once it softens, you stuff it with the vermicelli noodles, along with the meat, vegetables, and sauce, followed by wrapping it up, creating a kind of spring roll essentially. The food here was great, and it was a pretty big quantity, much bigger than any other vietnamese place (essentially) that I've ever been to. All this for just around $10, seemed like an excellent deal. I'd really like to come to Boston as little as possible in the future since I've spent way too much time here, but if I'm ever in the neighbourhood, this will definitely be my top choice. read more

I've never been a huge fan of pho, but this place's pho is pretty decent. It's also not too expensive, considering how much food you get and how much food everywhere else in Boston is. My friend gets the pho on a regular basis, and she's picky about food, so I guess that's a testament to how good it is. I've also tried their Thai fried rice (with brown rice, which you have to pay extra to sub in), which actually came with a decent amount of veggies and wasn't too oily/salty, and was a big enough portion to last me for lunch and to bring home the rest for dinner. I've also tried the curry rib noodles, which isn't actually what it sounds like/is described as. I expected noodles in curry with a decent amount of spare ribs. It was an actual soup, however, not really spicy at all, and only had 2 spare ribs. It tasted decent, and I enjoyed the quail eggs, but it wasn't anything spectacular. I wouldn't order it again. Some servers are really nice, while others are quite brusque. But overall, it's a cute little place with an atmosphere which could be good for a date if that's what you're looking for. It's cozy though, which is good for a rainy day when you're craving some comfort food. If you are, go help yourself to a bowl of pho. Trust me, you'll feel better. read more

I've been coming for years. Pad thai here has no comparison. Prices are student friendly and its popularity is just a fact. The food has so much flavor and it's served within 10 minutes of ordering it. Staff service varies per server. Some are very clingy with tips, especially those who don't deserve it. I've had a couple of experiences in which I'm leaving cash tips and paying with card and they get the idea that I'm not leaving any tip and make a scene. read more

Stopped by here to grab dinner with my colleague. It was our first time here and the place was very busy for a Tuesdays night! Although there were a lot of people waiting, it went by pretty quick. We ordered the goi Cuon, roti and curry, Kai soi. Overall I would skip on their goi cuon but their roti and curry appetizer was pretty good. Their roti was actually a scallion pancake so that was different! Their kao soi was delicious. It is a curry based soup served with egg noodle and fried noodles! When I asked the waitress, she checked with the kitchen then told me it'd take longer bc I had grilled pork over vermicelli. The waitress then came back and told me the kitchen made a mistake, something about they had grilled chicken instead of pork, would I like to order something else or forget it altogether... I am always impressed when a restaurant offers a diverse selection of items, so diverse it's a struggle to decide what to eat. I decided that I'll have to come back here soon to try the other delicious-sounding items. I ordered shumai (a favorite of mine), along with tangerine chicken, and a hot thai tea. The chicken dish was a curry with a lot of sauce. To was hot and slightly spicy as described. I couldn't even finish all of it; they gave a lot of rice. It wasn't as tangy as I expected, compared to orange chicken for example, but that is not necessary. I was very satisfied with my meal. It was a Tuesday night and we were a group of 9. They seated us even when the whole party wasn't there yet. It's not a super big place, so it was very nice of them to seat our big group early. The servers were very patient with us as we decided on what to order. Waters were brought to everyone in our group and filled when needed. Very attentive. I ordered the Pad See You with crispy chicken. It was soo good. The noodles were slightly sweet and salty. Vegetables were cooked perfectly-- cooked and still crunchy. Crispy chicken was seasoned, hot and crispy!! Highly recommend this dish. Not to mention it was a huge portion and I had enough for lunch the next day! For $11, I'd say this is a steal. I did notice that the portions for noodle dishes were bigger than the rice dishes. All my friends who ordered rice dishes finished their food, while most of us who ordered noodles had leftovers to take home. My vegetarian friends were very pleased with the selection. There's a whole page of veggie options and throughout the menu there's a (V) for dishes that can be turned vegetarian! Also they know not to use fish sauce for the veggie dishes. It was a friend's birthday and they were fine with us bringing a cheesecake from outside! It made her night :) FYI - There's a separate menu for desserts. My coworker and I wanted Thai food and we wanted to walk to the place from our hotel. We did some searching on Yelp and settled on Pho Basil - this place is pretty tiny inside and for a Tuesday night pretty packed. There were two groups ahead of us waiting and standing near the door. I will say that their layout is not ideal - it was kind of awkward with 6 of us smushed in the corner right next to the doors where people were going in and out and no host stand to wait nearby. It took kind of awhile before someone came to us and took our info, but then never told us how long the estimated wait would be. Originally, I wanted yellow curry and was craving it, but the yellow curry on the menu wasn't what I expected it to be or what I wanted. I wanted chicken yellow curry with onions and potatoes and even though there was a large selection of curry dishes to choose from, none of them had potatoes and almost all of them had a really odd medley of vegetables and fruits that I was not expecting or really feeling tonight. Example, their yellow curry ok the menu had pineapple, tomatoes, onions and mushrooms (among some other things I can't remember right now). Kind of weird/interesting right? I ended up getting the veggie puffs as an appetizer (second choice - I wanted the roti and curry originally but they were out of it), the Thai basil fried rice with crispy chicken, and milk tea bubble tea. Milk tea was good but not great - the tapioca pearls felt kind of hard rather than soft and chewy but the tea had a good flavor and was not too sweet which I like. Fried rice surprisingly had a lot of flavor and I appreciated that they offered crispy fried chicken with it as an option- that was unique and it tasted good. Veggie puffs were like little samosas but made with spring/egg roll wrapped. Despite the weirdness with waiting around awhile without being acknowledged or given an estimated wait time, not having the yellow curry I wanted, running out of the roti, and the OK milk tea, I'm still giving it 4 stars for the following reasons: it was packed for a Tuesday night and is a very small space; despite that, once we were seated the service was very good. Food was hot and fresh and arrived quickly and I enjoyed what I ordered overall. Portions were huge and prices relatively cheap. My colleagues and I order delivery ($2 service charge) once a week for dinner. From time to time, I do drop in for dine-in lunch as well. It does get busy while colleges are in session, so do plan accordingly. Great prices for students (or if you're on a budget). Try their daily lunch specials. My usual is the chicken satay, and pad Thai woon sen with chicken, and sometimes I add tofu (extra charge) to the dish. Traditional pad Thai is cooked with rice noodles, however "woon sen" is a clear bean thread noodle (derived from mung bean). It's lighter and not as heavy. I've been to many Thai places in the Boston area who claim their is the best, but this place prepares it the best in my opinion, lots of flavor without the greasy heavy taste. If you like traditional pad Thai, give this variation a taste. The chicken satay is grilled, only chicken breasts (a big plus) are used, and you get four skewers of generous portion per skewer. Dip it in thai peanut sauce and you'll make this your regular app as well. I also like their drunken noodles (with beef or chicken), which are stir-fried flat rice noodles. The fried chicken wings are excellent, although not traditionally Thai, chicken wings are one of my favorite foods. It's a caloric splurge. :) Tip, eat-in, it's fresher, without becoming soggy while sitting in a delivery box (like with any fried foods). read more

Great location for a solid bowl of pho. My wife and I get take out from here at least once a month. We usually order pho ga and the calamari. Sometimes the calamari comes out a little soggy, but that is likely just a product of the packaging and delivery itself. The place seemed clean and the waiters were nice. But I didn't think the food was anything spectacular. I have tried a lot of different restaurants. Now the down side... only one size bowl on the Pho so come hungry or you are leaving food on the table... I was here tonight for dinner with my family at around 9:15pm. One of the waitress kept on asking us are we done with the sriracha and hoisin sauce when my daughter was still eating the bowl of pho. Because the waitress needed to fill up the bottle for next day usage. We told her not yet, and 10 mins later she asked again but my daughter still needed it for the pho. Finally, we were paying the bill and done with the foods, she came over asking my daughter to get her the hoisin sauce bottle, she than asked again "are you done????" It was obviously no food on the table, why did she need to say that. She made a sly remark. Since she likes to fill up the sauce bottles than may she do that the rest of her life!!! P.S.
