I was in York on business. I expected to have to settle for Roy Rogers or some kind of fast food. Little did I know that the best Pho in the world was being made in York, PA. WOW. This pho is literally in a league of its own. The broth is so flavorful that after having this pho you realize that every other restaurant is cutting corners and leaving ingredients out. Those who know, know I enjoy really good Pho. When ever I'm on the road, I always have my eye out for the next great place. This was my thought for Pho Bistro. A lot of great reviews on Yelp, had me ready to try my next new find. Pho Bistro is easy to find on the corner. Fairly good parking right around the back. Nice basic decor on the inside and tables to seat around 50 or so people. They can accommodate nice size groups if need be. The staff is friendly and very attentive. Holding true to the Vietnamese traditions, the menu plays right into the traditional foods and there is something for all (meat,seafood, vegetarian). Very traditional appetizers as well. I made my selections and was ready for the tasting to begin. This where I sometimes wish we had the 1/2 star feature. Pho Bistro has all the makings for being a top Vietnamese restaurant. But, just needs a few things. I started with the shrimp spring roll. It came out in short order. They looked really good and were served with peanut dipping sauce. The roll itself was fresh with good ingredients. The peanut sauce was not so much. The first dip moved the sauce but nothing stuck to the roll. Using chopsticks, I was able to get sauce on the rolls and try it all together. The sauce lacked that crisp peanut flavor that you expect with a spring roll. It really took away from the dish. My main course was a favorite of mine. Shrimp, fried egg roll, rice noodles, salad and dressing. Again, it came very promptly. The bowl was served a bit different than I have seen before. The shrimp and egg roll on top of the noodles, which were on top of the salad. Sort of made the salad lose its freshness. The dressing was plenty but was short on spice and taste. I looked for some homemade hot pepper sauce or mix. All they had was sriracha. Pho Bistro is a solid Vietnamese restaurant. They have really good ingredients. It would be nice to see more spice and some more traditional sauces to add some more flavor to match the fresh ingredients. I would give them a solid 3.5 on the star scale. Bring us some of the spices Vietnamese food is know for and they definitely slide up and over 4. read more

First time here, second time trying Vietnamese food. I have to say I am really enjoying the experience. This place, the service was fast and the food was excellent! Again there was a nice couple that was glad to tell me what that were having and guide me to what I would like. I decided on B18, Bun Tom Xao Sa (stir fried lemongrass shrimp) medium spicy. This is really great vietnamese in york. I know, stunner! take a moment to take it all in. Was invited there by a Pho-natic! He said this is the best he has found in the York / Lancaster area. So much so that he goes ALL the time, and has people driving up from BWI to sample the fare. I must admit, when i met him there and the crispy spring rolls were waiting, I was already elated. They were divine. and even my BF ate them despite the shrimp bits (he's not a shrimp fan, and took moments to flick them out when he found them). The rest of the food was good too! i was even adventuresome and had the avocado drink. the first sip tasted like tapioca pudding, but not too sweet. very mild and cool. and after a while you taste the very light flavor of the avocado. It was really a fun drink! the chops were good, seasoned with lemon grass but wasnt overwhelming, nor were there crunchy bits of lemon grass in the dish. Mmmm... heaven! the owner brought out a new concoction of beef flash/pan cooked and served with a lemon/pepper/sweet sauce. it was surprisingly simple yet delicious. it didnt arrive with rice though. (I do love my meat dishes with rice!) the ambience: very casual, but very clean. and they have viewing tv's there. thanks for thinking of us man! ;o) it's family run. they have a their little kids around, sometimes taking your orders! great little kids. very cute, (not over worked ;o))... and if you ask, the owner will let you know these are straight A students! the owner is really nice. you may have to ask for the check. we just went up and paid after a bit of table talk. and you will want to ask for fork and a knife too if you get the pork chops! but that's part of the experience of having good vietnamese food! I wish I could give it 3 1/2 stars, but since this is the best place I've been to in York, I'll give it a solid 4. I got some vegan fresh rolls with tofu - these were excellent, and bigger than most places. Also had a veggie spring roll noodle bowl. This was not as good as I had hoped, but a bit of srirachia and it became so much better. Kudos to the waitress to ask if I was vegetarian because of the fish sauces they sometimes use. This outside of the restaurant doesn't adequately reflect how cute and welcoming this family run restaurant is. It is cozy inside with the nicest staff. The Pho is delicious and so fresh. Hit this place for lunch based on reviews. Kind of a hole in the wall joint with a suspect store front. Wanted some pho but was told it was only made with beef broth. At the waiters suggestion, had the lemongrass tofu and veggies. Came out in a huge bowl, veggies were not overlooked and it had a nice hint of lemongrass. Really good Vietnamese option for the area. I was surprised to find it here in York. It's better than a lot of the Vietnamese food I've had in DC and Orlando. I've had better, but given what they are achieving and where they are achieving it, they deserve the 5 stars. I had the vegetarian spring rolls (the crispy ones) and the Bún bò hué (lemongrass soup, spicy, with hue style bun ( bigger round rice noodle, pho noodles are flat ). The pork slices were great, I'd not had them like that since I lived in Orlando. Only two things stood out in terms of details that might make me give only 4 stars. But since they are minor, and there are no comparisons around York to let people know what they are missing, I'm not even going to mention them and give the Pho Bistro 5 stars anyway. The owner of this place is VERY nice and you can tell he takes pride in his business and the customers that have seemingly become regulars. I love their Thai tea and you can't beat their BYOB policy. My husband and I usually get the S6 Pho without the meatballs and you can tell the broths are very authentic. A medium size bowl usually does the trick, but treat yourself and get the large so you can savor those yummy leftovers later. They've got the perfect containers for it. There's a small parking lot on the side of the restaurant and we've never really had an issue finding a spot there or on the street in the surrounding neighborhood. I first encountered pho at Pho Bistro in York a few years ago. I came in today to enjoy some more of a soup I've come to adore. We started off with Shrimp Summer Rolls and Tamarind Wings. The rolls were good, though a little heavy on the Thai basil, whose anisey flavor is often overpowering for me. The peanut sauce was okay; a little sriracha helped, I think. The wings were quite good. Not super crispy like buffalo wings, but still a good texture. The sweet-sour flavor of tamarind was complimented by a subtle peanut taste - nice one! On to the main course: Pho with beef brisket, rare beef, and tendon. The broth was tasty and cleansing, though I think a bit low on the MSG flavor. The tendons were large slices, which is different from the stringy, almost noodle-like tendon I've had at other pho places. I was only able to eat a bit of that. Helpings of meat and noodles are fair; the accompanying Thai basil, bean sprouts, and lime are less generous. Fortunately, my father is a fan of the basil and I of the bean sprouts, so we were able to load up on our respective favorites. No cilantro - bummer. I'm used to getting a hefty amount of those coriander leaves from other pho establishments, though perhaps this is a Vietnamese regional variation of the soup. The restaurant is a humble, yet cozy space. The lunch crowd seemed a bit much at times for the two waiters taking care of the room; one took it in stride while the other seemed a bit less friendly. A little bonus: each table has a big bottle each of hoisin sauce and sriracha to spice up your food. While chopsticks and soup spoons are the only utensils on the table, the waitstaff will provide forks and/or knives if requested. Amazing place. I have never been disappointed. I still stop by as much as I can when I come to York. The first visit my daughter was just 6/7 the owner gave her a spring roll with the peanut sauce. Instant hit. They have the best peanut sauce for the rolls. They delivered one time many moons ago outside of their area after I asked and they were happy to do it. This is a difficult one to review. We have been coming to Pho Bistro, once a week to once every 2 weeks for several years now - and I have to say this is the most difficult place I have ever reviewed. We come here for various reasons - one of which is because it is a healthier option, another is compromise, and also because it is locally family run - but we can all find something we can eat here. I am dumbfounded by not only all of the glowing reviews - abut for the amount of them as well. York is not very culturally diverse when it comes to food. Currently this is one of the only Vietnamese places in town I am aware of - to see so much feedback for such a small family operation is surprising to me. I have to say, just about everything here is all over the place, about the only constant is the inconsistency. The place is rough - think mid-70 news-stand rough. Then again most Pho places in major cities are tiny rough holes in the wall - so I am used to that. It can be unkempt; you can come in times that the place is empty ant the table's aren't cleared. Often when we come in here we are the only ones in here...usually not very busy. When the owner and his family are working typically the service is OK. They have 2 teens working the front of the house, the boy is very nice and he seems to try hard, the girl - all I can say is, occasionally we've had unpleasant encounters...There is another crew that seemingly works sometimes on the weekends and the experience can be outright bizarre. You will be lucky to find anyone who speaks or understands English - let alone run the cash register - so you've been warned. Often the place is just closed with no warning - you will go there just like you did last week, and they will just be closed. So we have gotten used to calling ahead to see if they were open. Sometimes they take credit cards - We are used to coming here and it being cash only - but lately I have seen a sign on the door that says no credit cards today - cash only, so ...yea - there's that too. It is kinda expensive here for what you get, typically the 4 of us get summer rolls, Vietnamese coffee and soup or a Bun dish - with tax and tip it is about a hundred bucks - so you will need to be carrying at least a hondo. So - the food. I think there must be several types of Pho people, ones who like the broth rich and flavorful with spices - and those who prefer it more bland. I read a lot of complaints at my favorite Pho places about the broth being too rich or flavored with too many spices - I prefer my Pho rich, spicy and clear. People seem to like the Pho here - but I find it is very bland, I do not prefer it. It has almost no color, save for a murky hue that is reminiscent of day old dishwater. My girlfriend and her family prefer things a bit bland - so it works for them, I guess it is a matter of preference and I am sure the preparation is a regional thing in country. The summer rolls here are ok - and just, made of mostly lettuce and noodles - there is hardly any cilantro or basil in them...very plain. I happen to like the Curry Stir Fry Bun - I order it medium, which is HOT - and if you order it hot, it is Vietnam hot, you better like hot and have plenty of water. (I eat extremely hot foods all the time, so I'm not a light weight) I have to say, considering the challenges - when we first started coming here, it took some time to get used to. The cash only thing and the bizarre service was the first thing we butted heads with - but once we got used to how they worked and what we liked, we got used to it - your results may vary. I'm giving this 3 stars and I don't really know why - it could easily be 2 or maybe 4...depending on the day. read more

I went up to visit friends on Saturday and was greeted with the standard question of what are you in the mood for?? The conversation took a fast paced turn when the option that the hosts were holding up their sleeves came out with such pride that you knew the place had to be amazing. There is this great Pho place that kept me from boarding a plane?? Wait, What?? No, you don't understand... this place kept me from leaving and going back over to Vietnam. After talking them off the ledge to postpone it until Saturday morning for lunch due to meatless Fridays still being in effect we hit a sushi place. The early lunch started at 11:30 and we did not leave until 2:00... The funny part was we went back that night for a late dinner. Yes, it was that good. I like the family atmosphere of this place, I also like that they treat you like family. They can crack jokes with you instead of at you. They do not yell at you for getting a soda on your own, although I think the girl was a little shocked that it happened ;). The food is great, which you will probably read a few times throughout this review... Also I just realized how much I wrote... I am pretty happy about that and more importantly that they have five stars :). "The Good" - The food is amazing. The lunch crew had Shrimp Spring Rolls and Beef Spring Rolls to start with and large bowls of Pho with well done brisket and flank steak for me and a large bowl of Pho Dac Biet (Pho with the works) for my one friend, Hu Tieu Mi Xao Heo (Stir Fried Pork with noodles) for the other friend and a plate of Bun Bi Cha Gio (Bun with Veggies, Pork and Eggroll) to share for the table. - Please try the Spring Rolls, the Shrimp and the Beef Rolls are amazing. My mouth is watering right now typing/talking about them. The shrimp is cold and at first touch so are the beef rolls until you take a bite, then you can taste the beef strips that still have just enough smokey flavor from the grill that was trapped inside the roll with some of the freshest veggies... ever.. See your mouth is watering right now, right?? -It is a family run business and since we arrived a little early for the lunch crowd, the kids were watching Sponge Bob and rolling chop sticks for the tables and dad came over to take our orders. The dad was great cracking a few jokes, helping us properly pronounce the items we were ordering instead of just saying Number 44. Although if you did order by number, he immediately knew what the dish was... that alone was impressive. - The Pho came out hot, and was delicious on its own... They had a large selection of condiments including the dreaded rooster sauce which I snapped a photo of. You could add anything in that rack to the Pho and it would take on a different taste but still hold the common "delicious." - The drinks went down very easy at this point and since the place was filling up. I decided to help myself to another soda from the cooler and leave the can at the edge so they didn't think I was trying some grand theft Dr. Pepper. Granted I waited a little bit, but I knew that they were slammed and am not above helping out when I need a soda and saw where they kept the soda... easy fix. - The server, which was one of the daughters I think, came back to make sure the waters were topped off and check on the food quality. Like all times when you take a bite, people come to check on you ;). - When we returned that night the dad was there again and did a double take when he saw the same people sitting in the same table but in different seats.The dinner crew had the spring rolls which were amazing (again) random Pho entrees and I switched it up and tried the Chicken Curry. The curry was good, but I like the Pho better and the fact that the rest of the table was sitting there slurping away made it seem even better at night. I do not regret my decision though. I think you will win with whatever you order off the menu. "The Meh" - Both of these are mentioned here because they will put some people off, and give you an idea of what to expect. - If you want to have a fine dining experience then please go somewhere else. This place is a high quality producer of great tasting food. Sure, they need a little help on the floor at the front of the house, but how awesome is that. That is one of the best problems to have, they are successful and kicking some major tail in York. - Its old school family style, if a dish is done, it gets out of the window and onto a table. This is not normal for a restaurant but this is normal for food made with love. Did you have a meal at home where everything magically finished at the same time?? We had always loved the food at this place but before the new owner took over there were times when we just avoided going there because of poor customer service. We have been there a couple of times since the new owner took charge and now I'm making up excuses so my husband would drive us to go there almost every week!! Lol. The food continues to be amazing. Pho real, this may be my fave eatery in York. Or at least it's way up there. Low-key, family-run, hole-in-the wall serving ginormous portions of fresh, tasty food at reasonable prices. I've been here enough times by now that I should have tried a range of items, but I just can't find it in me to cheat on the pho (which there are many possible variations of). As others have noted, the pho is served with a variety of condiments on the side (bean sprouts, onions, fresh basil leaves, lime wedges, chili sauce), so you're free to experiment with and fine-tune the flavor to your liking. If you're not down for pho, Pho Bistro also serves an extensive range of stir-fried rice and noodle dishes, a number of which are vegetarian or vegan. And while the majority of the Vietnamese beverages are not something I'd climb the Marble Mountains to drink again (I'm lookin' at you, strangely graham cracker-y white gourd drink), they're always fun to try if you're feeling a bit adventurous. The servers are typically the owners'/chefs' young adolescent kids, so I always cut them some slack if the service isn't totally perfect (I mean, I was sitting around moping in angst and playing AoE on the weekends when I was 13, so I give serious props to these kids for being productive). I've always found them to be polite, friendly, and particularly eager to answer questions about the food/menu and make suggestions. The worst you might have to do is occasionally flag one of them down if you need something, but that's not something that bothers me in a casual eatery. Admittedly, I'm not sophisticated enough in my Vietnamese culinary experiences to know whether the food is authentic or what makes an excellent pho or that sort of thing. But at a basic level, it sure tastes good, and that's good enough for me. read more

A small, unassuming Vietnamese restaurant that hides an amazing dining experience. Stepping inside, you're greeted with a tables on either flank that can seat 2-4 people. The walls are treated wood with a golden hue and various styles of art depict Vietnamese culture. Tables are typical for smaller dining establishments and the floor is a mix of carpet and tile. The waitress was quite personable and was eager to give suggestions and insights on what the different meals and beverages were like. I personally tried the brisket and tendon pho, letter C, a perrywort drink, and tasted my food comrade's blended durian and shrimp spring rolls. Perrywort is a member of the carrot family, so this drink does have a very faint carrot taste. The smell is vaguely of spinach and something sweet. Sipping it, it has a taste akin to green tea with notes of the aforementioned spinach and carrots and is very sweet. The blended durian did not have the awful smell that the fruit is known for and was creamy like a milkshake and tasted fruity and milky. The shrimp spring rolls were a bit disappointing as the greens packed inside the wrap with the shrimp had an off putting taste, though that may have well been the noodles inside the wrap. The accompanying sauce for dipping came with crumbled nuts on top and while I don't know the name of it, really covered up the roll's weird taste quite well. The pho came in a huge bowl with sides of jalapeños, limes, bean sprouts, and Thai basil. Taste your broth first before you get crazy with adding stuff. The basil is a must and the bean sprouts add a nice crunch, but the sauces, the spicy stuff, and limes can tweak it to your taste. I spiced mine up pretty strongly and dug into an amazing adventure. The brisket was well cooked and had a solid taste and the tendons had been cooked to a soft, buttery consistency that made me super happy. I don't normally get filled up from soup and feel like I need a nap, but this pho left me full and content. The warmth and flavors just cried out to be the cure for a rainy day. Overall, the experience was great and I highly recommend stopping in at least once and giving the pho a chance because you won't regret it. read more

My fiance and friend decided to eat here the other night, based on a recommendation. Since we just purchased a home in York a few months ago, we wanted to find a good place for Pho. Full disclosure, all three of us are huge fans of Pho and have eaten at many Pho houses across the east coast. When we first arrived we noticed it was somewhat unassuming. That's typically not a big deal, some of the best restaurants are in hidden away areas. It's the food and service, not the atmosphere we were looking for. So slightly dirty tables and vastly outdated surroundings didn't bother us. I had the Beef Pho and the flavor was good, though I wouldn't call it spectacular. There was a weakness to it, that other Pho restaurants who make homemade broth's do 100 times better. The noodles, and meat were cooked very well. One thing that struck us as unusual was the very small single portion of bean sprouts and basil that was to be shared by the entire table. Typically when a plate is set to be shared among all guests there is a full potion. It was not enough for 3 people. We asked for some more, but never received it. It's also important to note that the staff there were less than hospitable, and we were really turned off by this aspect of our experience. So we certainly will never dine in again. However, the Pho itself is good enough for take out if we are ever in the mood and don't want to travel somewhere else. read more

This is, hands down, my favorite place to eat in York. The reasons why? It's a healthy option that is also delicious. Finding that in this area is a challenge (IMO). It's also run by a family, and not a chain restaurant. I like helping to support my local economy. I've had the pad thai, vermicelli noodles with chicken (once with shrimp), fried rice, spring rolls, wings, and of course the pho! My favorite is lemongrass flavored vermicelli noodle dish......YUM! If you want to skip the noodles/rice they'll accomodate that for you, and while one would think that would mean a smaller meal? Nope, they just add more fresh veggies and herbs. Each time my husband and I go to eat in we have the same waitress, who is the daughter of the owner. She's sweet, talkative, and has a fantastic memory. This was my first time having Pho. Let me tell you, that thanks to Pho Bistro, it won't be my last. For some reason, I've got a knack for finding great meals in hole in the wall restaurants. It never fails; someone will say "Let's go get food, I know a great place" and it's always some corner spot, with paper napkins, and plastic drink cups. These always turn out to be the best places to get authentic, quality meals. Pho Bistro was all that in spades. No atmosphere, no music, and no frills equaled generous, tasty portions, with relatively prompt, accurate service. I can't tell you what I ordered for dinner. Mostly because I can't pronounce it. It was soup, with clear, egg, and rice noodles. It had shrimp, beef, pork, and chicken. It was amazing. I spiced that badboy up with fish sauce, the hot pickled relish, and a little bit of the cock sauce ::Insert Peter Griffin giggle here:: and BOOM....awesome soup. We had the steamed shrimp rolls to start. They were well prepared, and I think I expected something different in the way of favor. If you didn't put anything on them, or use the peanut cream sauce they came with, they'd be awfully bland. The cream sauce was excellent, especially once we mixed in some of the hot relish. I wanted to eat it with a spoon, but I was chided by the wife for acting like a heathen. The prices didn't murder my wallet either.
