I love Vietnamese food and a friend who lives in Houston mentioned the number of Vietnamese eateries in the city as I was trying to figure out what to eat for our last meal before our flight home. I wanted to find a restaurant on the way to the airport on our way out of Houston, when I stumbled upon Pho Hai Van. Since my selection was predominantly based out of convenience, I kept my expectations low. We got there and were seated promptly. My significant other ordered the number 1 pho (first listed on the menu), while I ordered the pho ga (chicken). We were talking about our meal, and my partner described his as "first class pho" and that the "brisket was thoroughly meaty and flavorful even in the broth." As for the pho ga, I must admit, I was initially disappointed that it had a mix of dark and white meat, since I'm weird about meat (I like it flavorless), and I forgot to ask our server. However, I found it to be delicious! I'm so happy with my selection! If we find ourselves back in Houston, I know we plan to return to Pho Hai Van. read more

I came here with extended family to enjoy some Vietnamese food nearby their house. The location here is definitely off the beaten path, and in a Vietnamese strip mall on Scarsdale that neighbors an Asian market, a Vietnamese soup shop, and a donut shop. We came around 5:30pm on a weeknight, and there were a couple of other tables dining in. As we were leaving, there was a multitude of people in the front waiting for their takeout orders. I ordered the Com Tam Bi, Cha, Suon Nuong (broken rice plate with grilled pork chop, shredded roasted pork, and egg cake). It was served with cucumber slices, tomato slices, and pickled vegetables. I also added a fried egg for $1.25, which was worth it. The egg was fried perfectly (op la), with a runny yolk inside which I spread across my rice. Everything was seasoned and flavored well. Surprisingly, my favorite was the egg cake and shredded roasted pork: these were super moist and tasty. Unfortunately the normal star of the show, the pork chop, was quite dry on the inside. While knife tender, meat was really dry in my mouth and I had to balance out each bite with an equivalent bite of vegetables. The service here was quick and friendly. When we asked for a fork, knife, and plate, to cut some of the meat into smaller pieces, they brought out a bowl with a small pair of scissors. Only Asians will understand the pleasure this brought us, having had our parents cut our food with scissors growing up! I'm glad to have found a decent Vietnamese food option in this area. I've lived in the area for darn near a decade and never attempted to visit this place until one Saturday night I was on a date with a really cute guy who recommended it. He wanted to take me to Pho Vi Vi on Beamer, but since they had weird hours of closing early on the weekend and we wanted to stay in the area, he brought me here. Upon entering the restaurant, the temperature was very cold. The restaurant was semi-packed with people eating. I ordered my favorite pairings: tofu vermicelli bowl with tofu spring rolls. He ordered the pho. The food did not take long to come out, but when it did, it was hot. The vermicelli bowl was flavorful and came with all of the fixings. The tofu itself wasn't seasoned, but that was okay since I added some sriracha and some hoisin sauce to spice it up. The spring rolls were delicious and the peanut sauce wasn't too runny, but thick. The staff did not speak much, but they were still polite. My date mentioned that his meal was yummy and that he liked the broth. The restaurant is clean, smells nice, and the ambiance is modern. I think this was my second time trying pho ever and it was real good. The shaken beef is cook to perfection! Really good and full of flavor. The fried rice was good too. The egg was good. Not well done but good. They missed that part. The egg rolls were really good too. The service is fast and good. They paying in the front situation is a lagging. I've been loyal to a sweet Vietnamese place down the road but decided to venture out since they no longer offer tofu in their pho. I had no idea what a difference there could be in pho's. My pho broth was soooooo rich and flavorful. The tofu was cooked perfectly and the herbs were crisply fresh. My son loved his pork dish. Service was quick upon entering and our food arrived promptly but no one came by to check on us which for today was ok because everything was absolutely perfect. This place used to be my FAVORITE for years. Sadly i think they've might've sold it to someone else or something. First we got egg rolls. Jusr plain egg rolls and there was a SHRIMP IN ONE OF THEM!!! i am highly allergic to shrimp and could've died. Second i asked for all white meat in my Pho which i have been doing for years here and have NEVER had a problem. And it was dark meat in my pho. Third the service has gone down the drain here. Took about 10 mins to get drink and food ordered , never got checked on, napkins on table were emptied. I will NEVER come back here which is sad cause i used to come here at least once a month. I've already gotten that dish from here twice: once for in-person dining, and once to-go. I highly recommend this dish to anyone. There's not a lot of super great bo luc lac dishes that I've tried in Houston, so this is definitely at the type. The flavor is so good, and the fried rice with it was also delicious. This is one of my first time trying the beef pho from there and I just wanted to say that the taste was incredible. I could taste some of the spices in it and it paired well with the round steak. Which was tender and tasty too! I also ordered their iced Vietnamese coffee and I really love how they bring the phin filter to the table. It proved to me that the coffee is fresh with an authentic experience. I've been to other places where they prepare the coffee in big jars and leave it in the fridge for the day, which to me ends up losing its fresh taste. I've tried instant Vietnamese coffee before, this was not instant coffee so I'm not sure what the other person on the reviews was talking about. I would also like to add that there was an issue with the table next to ours and the management/staff was quick to help them out to make sure they left satisfied. Service was quick and kind! Today I came and placed an order as the same foods as I always had had to take out, "Lemongrass-fried-catfish noodle". Normally when I ate there, the fried catfish fried with no flour covered but blended in lemongrass and chili, tasted good and didn't have the fishy odor. Today I brought home the meal that was made in the American way (which the american restaurant made better,) catfish covered in the thick flour and they are not even crispy with no lemongrass mixed, they were cold, taste and smelled fishy, like rotten fish! I vomit after the third bite! I called them to ask, guess what, their answer,"It depends on who made it (i guessed they have multiple chef in the kitchen!,) one cooker put a lot of flour to make the catfish crispy (they weren't crispy on my noodles and the flour was thick,) " then she said, "the other put a little bit of flour to fry that I wouldn't even know there's flour on the pieces of catfish when I eat and they always put lemongrass (my meal today didn't have lemongrass on my catfish, and I ordered foods to take out didn't mean that I don't know how to do it, plus I am not blind and my tongue didn't numb that I didn't see or couldn't taste the flour in my mouth!) I didn't expect every time i came to order the same food I like that would be made differently because depending on who made the meal! For me, never coming back there again since today I feel sick after tasting that fried flour-catfish ! So I guess if you want your food to be made as same as the last time you had, you must describe the way they made last time each time you order in order to not throw away your foods and waste your money then! read more

It was disgusting, and there was absolutely no sweetened condensed milk in it. The 'spring rolls with shrimp and pork' were equally as gross. The pork was gamey and rancid tasting and I couldn't even eat them after one bite. The pho was ok, but after sitting 20 min waiting for my to-go order, I felt sick from seeing how dirty the place was. I didn't really want to eat it, and wanted to ask for my money back.
