This is one of my first time trying the beef pho from there and I just wanted to say that the taste was incredible. I could taste some of the spices in it and it paired well with the round steak. Which was tender and tasty too! I also ordered their iced Vietnamese coffee and I really love how they bring the phin filter to the table. It proved to me that the coffee is fresh with an authentic experience. I've been to other places where they prepare the coffee in big jars and leave it in the fridge for the day, which to me ends up losing its fresh taste. I've tried instant Vietnamese coffee before, this was not instant coffee so I'm not sure what the other person on the reviews was talking about. I would also like to add that there was an issue with the table next to ours and the management/staff was quick to help them out to make sure they left satisfied. Service was quick and kind! Stopped in today for some good ole noodles - vermicelli. Walked in and sat down instantly. However me and party sat to the back, which was ok, I guess. A lot of empty seats and tables-a few dirty. The table we sat at was sticky around the edges. . I know this because the arm seemed to think believe it was a permanent fixture with table. I went to the restroom and washed my hands and if you've been here you know restrooms are small. What makes a small restroom worse is pissy floors and an empty paper towel dispenser.. -now there was a hand dryer. I ordered the Bun Tom Xao Xa Ot or B15. With chicken. I had to have my fish sauce (nc mm). My meal was very good. I got a little too excited because when I finished eating I had nc mmon my nice pretty white with blue stripes button down. It was disgusting, and there was absolutely no sweetened condensed milk in it. The 'spring rolls with shrimp and pork' were equally as gross. The pork was gamey and rancid tasting and I couldn't even eat them after one bite. The pho was ok, but after sitting 20 min waiting for my to-go order, I felt sick from seeing how dirty the place was. I didn't really want to eat it, and wanted to ask for my money back. My order: Tofu spring rolls - These were excellent, it had fried tofu, vermicelli noodles, bean sprouts, lettuce, and the peanut sauce that accompanies it, is a must to dip them in! They also add some Sriracha to it. Combination fried rice - It comes with shrimp, pork, chicken, and of course your veggies, carrots, peas, onions. This is the most authentic pho place I've ever eaten at. After trying others this is the only establishment my husband and I visit when we need our fix. Every bowl tastes just like my moms. Today I came and placed an order as the same foods as I always had had to take out, "Lemongrass-fried-catfish noodle". Normally when I ate there, the fried catfish fried with no flour covered but blended in lemongrass and chili, tasted good and didn't have the fishy odor. Today I brought home the meal that was made in the American way (which the american restaurant made better,) catfish covered in the thick flour and they are not even crispy with no lemongrass mixed, they were cold, taste and smelled fishy, like rotten fish! I vomit after the third bite! I called them to ask, guess what, their answer,"It depends on who made it (i guessed they have multiple chef in the kitchen!,) one cooker put a lot of flour to make the catfish crispy (they weren't crispy on my noodles and the flour was thick,) " then she said, "the other put a little bit of flour to fry that I wouldn't even know there's flour on the pieces of catfish when I eat and they always put lemongrass (my meal today didn't have lemongrass on my catfish, and I ordered foods to take out didn't mean that I don't know how to do it, plus I am not blind and my tongue didn't numb that I didn't see or couldn't taste the flour in my mouth!) I didn't expect every time i came to order the same food I like that would be made differently because depending on who made the meal! For me, never coming back there again since today I feel sick after tasting that fried flour-catfish ! So I guess if you want your food to be made as same as the last time you had, you must describe the way they made last time each time you order in order to not throw away your foods and waste your money then! read more

First time here and I ordered a Vermicelli bowl with grilled marinated shrimp! It came with cucumbers, carrots, bean sprouts, and some other things that you can look up on the menu. :) They also give you a sauce that is sweet and delicious to mix in. Now this place is very close to where a friend of mine lives so I will only go when I'm near the area. But I would definitely eat the food again. I'm looking to find one closer to where I am. On Easter, the restaurant was about a third full, and it is quite nice inside with low volume Asian pop playing above and a silent tv. The seating we were escorted to was half cushioned booth and half sturdy chairs. The tables were already equipped with the sauces and plastic chopsticks. I prefer the wooden ones so I used the fork that was rolled in a paper napkin. I thought I'd order the B2 chicken vermicelli, but the knowledgeable waiter suggested the B7 because it had a bit more variety and cooked with a different flavor. It was extremely delicious and substantial with a mix of grilled and fresh vegetables. I don't know what I was thinking by adding the spicy fish sauce to it, especially when it gave me heartburn. The chicken was so tender, moist and juicy. It tasted extremely fresh. The free refill, tall iced Jazmine tea was too bitter for me, but it was still refreshing. They have a Coca Cola machine as you step into the restaurant as well. I found their price to be affordable for this dish for the quality and amount. I would order this dish again, and I would visit again. The waitstaff pay attention to the dynamics at your table so you won't be too bothered with them coming by too often. I'm a long time customer. I've been coming here since 2016 and I always leave with a happy belly. The prices for their food is great. I love their pho and their bo lu lac. They've done some renovations post Hurricane Harvey and the place looks so much cleaner and and nicer now. The service is good, they always refill my water promptly. One of the down sides is that if you ever spend less than $10 you have to pay cash and to pay for your meal you have to go up to the cash register every time. read more

Near my area, there aren't a lot of Vietnamese places. I think this is one of the best (as well as Pho Binh Trailer). I think this is pretty good for what it is! It's a tad expensive compared to other places in bellaire, but considering it's close to where I live, it's okay. Their pho is decent. What I USUALLY get is their rice! (C5) so so so good. It's made fresh. Comes out steamin' hot. I always ask for a small bowl of soup (charges extra,'wish they didn't..) and a fried egg on top. It's absolutely delicious. Only thing I don't like is that their service is slow. They always forget atleast one thing on my order, which sucks. Because I do come here atleast once every two weeks! Pho Hai Van is one of my go-to local Vietnamese restaurants. I've lived in this part of the neighborhood since 2004 and I've seen the place grow. Interior-wise, the place probably is the best looking Vietnamese/Pho restaurant within 18 miles. Their service is spot on and their service to all customers is quite good. The owner/manager makes an effort to keep his customers happy and notices when customers need their orders and promptly visits tables when their staff gets a little behind. Any English-speaking customer will not be left hanging. It's hard not to recommend anything because all their food is done quite well. Rice plates use broken rice, Pho is solid but can hang on the slightly more expensive side; and like another reviewer stated, other highly praised pho restaurants will run out of pho--this will never be the case here at Hai Van (but the fact a restaurant can run out of pho is something to behold and speaks volumes about that particular restaurant). Hai Van is COVID warry and makes it mandatory to wear a mask upon entering. Hand sanitizer is provided at the entrance. One thing the place is iconically known for is that they leave a TV always playing a bunch of random kung fu flicks. Growing up, I watched tons of them, and still today I enjoy them. It's a little random, but gosh, my eyes will always wander up to watch the movies when I eat. Hai Van keeps it fresh by also incorporating newly released kung fu movies. As always, a few recommendations: 1.) Pho Tai Bo Vien (noodle soup) - I mean, the place is called Pho Hai Van for a reason. Pho is their specialty and they do a pretty damn good job at it. "Tai" is thin slices of round eye steak; if you are a meat enthusiast, ask to have them place the meats on the side. It will come to your table rare and separated from the soup so that you can control how well you'd like your meat cooked (the soup has cooled from entering the bowl and being served). The quality of the meat is usually quite good and you would never find them serving oxidized meat this way. 2.) Spring Rolls (appetizer) - No place should ever serve refrigerated spring rolls. Hai Van knows this. Vietnamese peanut sauce with a bit of chili paste--oof, yeah, give me more of that. 3.) Banh Mi Bo Kho (beef stew) - Need a switch up? Try their beef stew served with a french baguette. read more

I will no longer tip there, after today. Unfortunately I found out that, all the times I've had food from there, my tips have been going to the owner. I was asking an employee if I should leave my tip on the table or jar and if they shared tips. They told me that they don't get the tips, because they get paid hourly. Then I asked who gets the tip and they told me the owner. It's upsetting because I work in the food industry so I like to be generous when it comes to tipping. BUT WHY TIP THERE IF THE OWNER IS BEING GREEDY? My food is always fresh and the service is great. I can see why that place stays in business. Anytime I walk in during lunch, it's busy. The employees do everything from register, to making your drinks, and running food. My friend and I chose this location to get pho at because it was in between where we live. When we arrived the places looked clean for the most part inside. The service was extremely slow and as we were waiting we witnessed an employee cutting random meat at a table in the back of the restaurant.... my friend was really grossed out because he wasn't wearing gloves. I had ordered vegetable pho so I kind of looked passed the gross meat situation. We waited even longer and then I heard commotion in the kitchen and a few girls threw a silverware holder as well as a few other items on the ground and started stomping at it. They were exclaiming "ew, ew!" and laughing.... I could only assume that they were stomping bugs and at that point we decided we did not want to eat here. So you're looking for Vietnamese food in Houston. I'm not even going to start exaggerating about Hai Van, because honestly, cheap, delicious Vietnamese food is not hard to find in this city at all. I mean, it's not even hard to find in this area of Houston. But if you're in the Scarsdale area, I wouldn't be too quick to turn Hai Van down. I've been going to Hai Van since I was a kid. I've been with it through name changes (I believe it was Pho Cong Li before? Excuse my probably spelling mishap), menu changes; I've even grown up as their kids have grown up. Hai Van, like most of the Vietnamese eateries in the area, is your standard mom and pop restaurant. And it's damn good. Except now I'm pretty sure I see their kids running the place more than the mom and dad. Last I went, I got one of their combos for $6.50. It came with a small bowl of beef pho (A+ for their soup stock), pork and cold vermicelli, a spring roll, and a drink. For $6.50, I was full and my taste buds were 100% satisfied. The service is normal; I mean, this is no dressy establishment. It's a casual place for a quick bite to eat, so if you have to get up and pay for your meal at the cashier, do so without complaining. This is a great place for kids (as I have practically stopped by every time my family visited Hong Kong Market as a kid..which was a lot), and their flavor has barely changed with all of the other changes. I like the vegetarian tofu and noodles at is place. Once I had old tofu and I took it back and the owners replaced it without a problem. I do think that the food here is fresh and delicious. In the land of some very good Vietnamese restaurants and food, this is one of the favorites. I really only eat the tofu and shrimp items so i can't speak for the balance of the menu, but the pho, shrimp lemon grass vermicelli, shrimp and tofu spring rolls are really the best in the area. I don't know what makes it better here than any of the other 300 restaurants in the area, maybe it's the fast service, the friendly staff, or that the food is always crazy hot (good in my book), but this is my go to for comfort food in the caliber. They are also a pretty small place so it feels like a hole in the wall which is so much better than the way overpriced places in midtown, oh yeah this place is crazy cheap so this also keeps me coming back all the time!! read more

Upon return to my old stomping grounds, PHO HAI VAN IS BACK WITH A VENGEANCE!!!!!!! Let it be known that their pho is delicious, delicate yet filling, and perfectly well balanced.
