It's so hard to find a pho broth that you really enjoy. I've had pho from here about 3 or 4 times in the last couple of months and I love it. I can't say that the meat is of the best quality because I find it to be awfully fatty. I've decided to make this a vegetarian option for me going forward and will only order the broth and noddles. I've been going to Pho Hiep Hoa for years. The broth is really good and the service and decor are no-frills and on the edge of being divey. But the food and the prices make this place worth returning to every time. You can get two large bowls of pho for less than $20. Their grilled pork dishes are also excellent. They have a huge plasma hanging from the ceiling that's usually playing a Vietnamese soap opera and there's a big fish tank that my kids love. Service here was absolutely disgusting. When we walked in the servers were sitting down and couldn't bother to help us. I thought they were customers until they got up and handed us a menu. Ended up ordering pho for me, and my sister got rice with sauce. They brought out the wrong order and then was externally annoyed when my sister said something about it. Whatever we ate and was ready to pay and leave. We had to walk over to the register to pay, card minimum is $10, okay fine, but after I paid the cashier handed me the costumer copy of credit card receipt, and stapled the merchant copy to the itemized receipt. And when I asked for a copy of the itemized, she told me they don't give that out. Why not? I want to know what I'm being charged for, I don't understand why that is privy information? I had to ask her to see the itemized so I could take a pic. You guys should really give costumers a copy of what they are being charged for not just a receipt with the overall total. The first Pho restaurant I went to about 6-7 years ago. The food is great. I love their broth however, they do not accept credit cards. I would suggest they get a credit card machine! Good location but the building seems a bit old. The service is pretty good, they helped me decide which dish to get and they prepared the food very very quickly. I took my order to go and I was pretty surprise that they gave me all the herbs not yet in the Brittany done of my meat was completely raw. Now this is I believe normal since when you put it in the boiling water it gets cooked but I was nonetheless surprised since I was taking it home. I was craving for Indonesian Meatball Noodle Soup but couldn't find one around. So, here is the place I could get one that is pretty similar in taste and texture. The broth was killer! The meatball exactly the ones I was hoping for. Funny thing, I found out later the kitchen staffs were Indonesian origin (at that time). The portion was generous. I ordered all in my big pho bowl. From start to finish this place was a complete disaster. My sister and I walked it and the place was empty besides two table that had customers, so I thought. We walked in and stood there looking around not sure if we should grab a seat or wait to be seated. Once we sat down, again we looked around unsure how service worked. A few minutes later the guy sitting at one of the tables got up and gave us a menu. We were both shocked but, brushed it off. My sister ordered Pho and I ordered plain rice. When our order came I was given spring rolls. When I told the "waiter" it was the wrong order he told me "No, this is what you ordered" but the spring rolls contains meat and I don't eat meat. He was so annoyed with me and made me feel very uncomfortable. When he brought back the right ordered he tossed it on the table and abruptly walked off. My sister and I ate quickly and got up to pay. My sister paid with card and asked for an itemized copy of the receipt but the lady told her "no" at this point we were rolling with the punches. To avoid being there any longer my sister just took a picture of the receipt with her phone. The staff clearly did not what to be there and they reflected on us so, this made us not want to be there well. Located on the same strip as Full Key and Max's Kosher cafe, the strip does have some classic Wheaton food destinations. Since this place has been here for at least 10 years despite the lack of decor or ambiance it's pretty safe to say that their pho is decent. My little sis decided she wanted to have pho for her birthday and the family didn't feel like driving to VA for pho, which was my suggestion. So we came to our old staple. My sis, my bro and I ordered the tai chin (eye round and well done brisket), my mom ordered pho ga. The tai chin came with the raw, thin slices of eye round and the brisket was still tender and not too fatty. The raw slices of eye round is what turns my mom off to beef pho, she likes her meat well done, other wise it's just raw meat ..y eso no es bueno! The broth is flavorful and well balanced. They include cilantro by default. At Pho Bistro in Ashburn I have to specifically ask for it. They also have culandro in the veggie selection along with the bean sprouts, fresh basil, jalapeno slices, and limes. Minus .5 for having watered down Sriracha (blashphemy!) But I guess with this economy they are trying to stretch their dollars? We also ordered summer rolls and requested pork only as the family doesn't like the shrimp ones. Random visit for lunch today. Menu has total 1980s vibe. Who are the peeps on the menu? Ignoring the photos, I ordered spring roll, coconut juice, and P8. It's 12:30 and the place is empty. Less than 10 patrons. This makes me nervous. Ah whatevs. I'll give it a go anyway. My dining patron does not eat meat and the place does not have fish ball, shrimp, anything that swims. Second whatevs. It's my fault that we chose at random. The patron orders plain noodle with no meat, the last item on the menu. Same price though. I'm hoping the food will make up all the whatevs. What an epic fail. Pho meat was terrible in quality. I got nothing but gristle, two solid meat pieces. Winner... Veggies seemed fresh though? But they are sitting in the broth that was almost exactly like pho bullion powder thing you get at the grocery store. Coconut juice had good pieces of meat, but they were dry and felt OLD. Spring roll is the highlight. They come AFTER I finished pho. They were piping hot, but over fried and 80% of the skin has that dark brown color. Double frying is ok. But exactly how many times did you people fry this spring roll? Then they want cash payment only. It wraps up the perfect meal. A Pho cafeteria, plain and simple. Soup comes in large and huge sizes. Meat is always generous and good quality. No matter what I order, a little bit of tripe or tendon makes its way into my soup somehow. I guess its what they put in the broth to make it so darn good! The broth is very meaty (moreso than many other pho places in the area). The condiments are excellent and fresh. Except the basil. Its not usually THAT fresh. But it's still good. Really. If you are expecting a fancy atmosphere, forget it. If you want friendly service, forget it (it's always fast, though). If you don't like wacky Vietnamese music videos playing on the tv while you eat, forget it. This is pretty much our go to lunch spot at work. It's not totally uncommon that we go there multiple times in one week. Fortunately enough they have a great variety of Vietnamese dishes. The pho is strong to quite strong. The bun is also very good. Just got the lemongrass meat combo today, and it was sufficiently spicy and well lemongrassed. If I'm feeling kinda saucy I'll get the imperial fried rice. Awesome fried rice in a spring roll wrapper bowl with a fried egg on top? Yes, please! Not the best Pho restaurant in the area, but good in its own rite. Very cheap and simple interior. Not a place you take a date. Almost like a cafeteria you'd probably see in Asia. Seat yourself and grab your own utensils. Chopsticks and spoons are dispensed out of little plastic organizers sitting on the tables. Honestly, compared to many other Pho locations in the silver spring area, this location has the BEST tasting pho I've tried. It has just the right taste and flavor, it's just great! Now, I'm giving them four stars only because of their lack of decor in the restaurant. It seems to be very, boring, for lack of better wording. The just set tables and chairs in the restaurant and a TV mounted to the wall but that's about it. The restaurant isn't appealing one bit but the pho makes up for it. I don't know what happened to this place but it used to be pretty decent. The place is dirty, the soup is bland, and the veggies seems like its been sitting around for awhile. I think the soup and the meat are the two most important part of Pho and both things are very mediocre at Pho Hiep Hoa. I've been to most of the Pho restaurants int he area but this is one of the few that I will probably never return to. Pho Hiep-Hoa isn't really anything unique or creative in terms of a pho place. It's the same thing wherever you go. Waiters casually sitting around waiting for people. You can pretty much sit anywhere you'd like if it's unoccupied. They serve you some water and take your order. Portions are large as are any other pho places. It isn't the best pho that I've ever had (that honor goes to Pho Xe Lua Viet Thai in Philadelphia). You can taste the msg in the broth but I don't think most people hate the taste of msg. It's a super casual place so don't expect fancy service or anything but you can expect quick service. Personally, I go to this place for pho and pho only. I have never tried their other Vietnamese dishes. Go for a quick pho fix but not if you want the best pho in your life. read more

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a food connoisseur by any means. Especially back in the day, where if you gave me a blind taste test of a 5 star dish and a 1 star dish, I probably would've guessed wrong 6 out of 10 times(maybe 8 back then). So I wasn't quite sure why my Vietnamese friends would always want to go to Pho Hiep Hoa, when there were other Pho restaraunts that were supposed to be popular. However if you try the pho at other places in Montgomery County after eating the pho at Pho Hiep Hoa, you realize how tasty the broth is and the perfect texture the noodles are. Plus its almost always consistent as well. Pho Hiep Hoa also is open later then most of the other pho restaraunts in the area too. I agree with others, that the front parking can be a pain sometimes. Especially because its one way and you have some drivers sitting in the middle of lane near the entrance waiting for a parking spot to open, causing other cars behind them to wait to turn in on University Blvd. C'mon people, if you don't see an open spot or someone about to leave, then either go to the back parking lot or circle around. They've been remodelling recently, but its still a really minimalist design. To me that's how a pho restaraunt should be though. Nothing but plain tables with napkins and a carousel for chopsticks, spoons, and sauces, and they serve nothing but pho, desserts, drinks, and appetizers. read more

It should have been a clear sign that it was going to be bad. It was 7:00 PM and there was absolutely nobody. The second bad sign was the smell of the place. Wet towel rotting kind of smell. Against my gut feeling, I stayed because I really wanted to have a nice bowl of warm pho on that gloomy day. You can guess... Food was bad. Really bad. Basil leaves and bean sprouts were wilted so bad. The broth was dark and tasted weird. I forgot all about it until today when I found out they charged me $19 more on my credit card. Okay, the pho here is so. Damn. Good. It's a dollar or so more expensive than the other places in the area that I've been to, but the broth is to die for. It's quick (what Pho place isn't?), fairly clean, and delicious! I would recommend the fried spring rolls rather than the cold ones... and their iced coffee is really good too! The only thing I have to complain about is the one employee they have there... everyone else is super nice, but there's this one hispanic dude (seems like a manager or something?) is SO rude!
