Last week it was amazing! This time around, food arrived so cold that the meat for pho wouldn't cook. Also, we paid for a couple of boba tea -- instead of boba teas, we were given frozen drinks with pink balls at the bottom (soda straws were provided but not the fat straws that are usually accompanied with boba teas.) When we called the restaurant to complain about the cold food and missing drinks, the restaurant told us that they were out of boba, yet they wouldn't refund our money. They also didn't care that everything was cold and that it all ended up in the trash! Horrible experience! read more

This is one of our go to dinner spots. It can be a little busy and you might rubbing elbows with a perfect stranger but that's a great way to make new friends I suppose. I always get the Chicken Pho (also great for when your sick....or maybe had a drink or two too many the night before). My husband switches it up between the various Beef Phos but hasn't been disappointed yet. read more

For Arcata, this was great Pho. In terms of Pho that I have ever eaten - it's a 7 of 10. Service was amazing, but opening day was crazy! UPDATE: I never thought I was going to go here so much, but as current DUKE - I think it's evident that I do. I'm in love with their pho, service, spring rolls, and Thai ice tea/coffee. I always get their beef Pho and I have tried several combinations and like them all. My friend had their vegetarian pho and really like it! I tasted it and enjoyed it, but pho without tripe just isn't pho to me. Which is why I stopped going to Annie's Cambodian. Annie's does not put tripe in their pho anymore - you have to special request it for a fee. TIP: I thought that the popularity of the place would die down, but it's still packed. Our experience was so good they had to call the police to get us out of there! I came back into town with my friend from South Africa and ordered an array of things, the Vegetarian Pho, Vegetarian Curry, and the Pork Pad Thai. They served us food that was piping hot and we all patiently waited for it to cool, while blowing on it like concert flautists but it remained so hot that we scalded our mouths. Even at the end of the meal the food was extremely hot and my friend trying my curry said he burnt his tongue and the roof of his mouth. Another friend who lives in Arcata was present and he didn't want to complain after the meal because the town is very small but he agreed that we should say something without him being present. Later my South African friend and I went in, and we explained that the temperature of their food burnt our mouths despite us very patient and that we wanted to honestly convey this to them to prevent other customers from further mouth injury. Because the kitchen was closing they said to come on Tuesday to get two meals on the house. They must have thought that we were not going to follow through because when we came back there was a confusion amongst the staff. The male waiter there said we could have one meal on the house, the main female hostess then said we could have 2 things on the house so we went in to sit down. Then "Tee" the owner came out with a aggressive energy and said that we could have nothing for free, going back on his word. We tried to communicate with him and remind them about the situation and then he raised his voice and called the police to have us leave. Being a firm believe in the power of commpassionate and clear communication we both tried to resolve this without making a big deal. It was quite a ego check for me because all of a sudden he was calling the police on us as if we were criminals. The whole restaurant was present with our attempt to resolved this with communication but he couldn't even look us in the eyes, instead he paced around and avoided us. The police eventually came after we had left the restaurant and we explained ourselves to them and felt bad for them waisting their time. read more

Alright everyone. Calm down. Pho Hoang is the best (non sushi) Asian cuisine restaurant in the Humboldt Bay area. Hands down. The good: FAST food/service Friendly and attentive waiters Consistent quality food Many selections Tastes great! The bad: Most nights are crowded. Make a reservation if over 2 people if you don't want to worry! I come here almost weekly with my girlfriend or group of friends. Never had a bad experience here. First and foremost I am a Pho junkie. I can't get enough of it and want it all the time, this drives my wife crazy because she is not a huge fan. The dinner we just had at Pho Hoang was pretty damm good. I, of course had the beef combo Pho (P1), and my wife had the lemongrass & egg roll rice plate (C9). We also shared a coconut shrimp (A6). All of the food was good and fresh. However, the coconut shrimp had too much breading which made it a bit greasy. And my wife said her egg roll that came with her meal was greasy as well. My Pho was very good and reminiscent of the Pho served at Pho Thiên Long Vietnamese Restaurant in Eureka. Both my wife and I believe and agree the food in Eureka is much better. When I don't want to drive all the way to Eureka and I am in need of my Pho fix I will be back. read more

Thank goodness, I have found my Vietnamese spot! Had the veggie pho and it was perfection. Everything was fresh and the broth so good. This is a busy place and when the demand is high, the quality is good. I'm not sure you need to make a reservation but it can fill up fast so you may have to wait but people are in and out quickly. I have been here on several occasions since they opened up. I always get either the combination or the chicken pho and maybe some spring rolls to share. The pho doesn't compare to the pho in the bay, but its decent. This place and the one in Eureka are the only places where I have seen pho broth that is that dark. The noodles are good but its pretty hard to mess up rice noodles, and the meats and tendons are surprisingly good. If I get a craving for pho, this is sadly one of the only places to go. Really wish restaurants tried harder in Humboldt County. read more

Japhy's Schmafy's! This place is legit. There is no comparison to Japhy's. Sure, I would have preferred a bit more heat in my green papaya salad but I just added a bit of Sriracha and everything was copasetic. And just the fact I can now buy a green papaya salad in Arcata is cause enough for celebration. I found the service to be friendly, attentive and accurate in spite of going in on only the second day of its existence. I found the Pho to be quite good and when I asked for a bit more basil and jalapeños (as is my preference) the waiter obliged and quickly brought some out to me. I would like to see a beef salad (lemon grass, mint, red onion, fish sauce etc.) offering as well as some calamari and hopefully with time that will come. But for now I am thrilled that the long and puzzling wait for our west-coast college town to finally get a Vietnamese noodle house has ended. Tangentially, the other culinary drought that recently ended is fresh sushi available at a grocery store. Now Arcata is on par with Fortuna, Weaverville and Redding in this area. excellent customer service... a multiple variety of foods that are fresh tasting... soups are large and fulfilling... boba is soft and chewy with the frozen smoothies always tasty... sauces on their dry glass noodles and chow mein are the perfect amount and flavorful... I suggested they add something to menu and they added that plate... they update their menu with new dishes which always a plus.... this was my go to restaurant when I was a HSU student... no regrets going here :)... would definitely recommend read more

First time eating here was a success. Busy on Thursday afternoon but all of our food was out in under 10 mins. Big portions and really authentic tasting. At first, after the grand opening, I really liked this place. But I'm sad to report a decline in quality. Many things are pre-made, then dumped in a bowl and microwaved and on the table in minutes. I like fast service, but not if it means the food comes from a microwave. The papaya salad should embarrass them, as should the wilted old black edge lettuce they put in their noodle bowls. Attention to flavor and quality has bottomed out at the bare minimum needed to function as a restaurant. Where's the pride? If they put a little more effort into it, they could be a shining star of Arcata, instead of being a place we go to by default because there's nowhere else around to get Vietnamese food. I had beef pho two days ago, and it wasn't very good. The next day I had some bathroom trouble, pretty sure it was the pho. The best bet is the stir fry noodles, hard to mess up and they have to make it, not just scoop it from a tub and throw it in the microwave. read more

I don't think people understand my obsession with spring rolls. This place hands down has the best spring rolls ever! The manager knows me as the spring roll girl and he will know exactly who this is when he reads it. (HI!) They are fresh, mouth watering and soul satisfying. This was my first time Pho Hoang. It is difficult to find a place to eat out on Sundays in Arcata. We thought we would give it a try since it is often full and it's new. We are big fans of Jaffys and any of the sushi restaurants in Arcata. We were very disappointed at Pho Hoang. We ordered seafood noodles stir fry and grilled prawns as well as the kids chicken noodles. For the seafood noodles, all of the veggies were clearly frozen and had not been thawed, therefore not even stir fried. The stir fry was drenched in oil. For the grilled prawns the rice was pretty bad. The grilled prawns were fine. The salad with the prawns was flat and tasteless and small. It was fast food. It showed up at the table super quick and it was a total of $47 for dinner. I think it was a huge ripoff. I would go to Jaffys two times for amazing, yummy curry or noodles or one great night at Sushi Tao or Sushi Spot or Tomo for that price. I could not be more disapointed in tonight's experience. I wish I had skipped this... If you serve fresh veggies at your dinner table or you value your money, take it from us, this is not the place for you. Price wise, wissssssh I could get my money back. The only positive, the location looked fairly nice and clean since it was new and therefore I found the greasy food to be unexpected. Finally on the kids menu there was only soda as options. Soda for kids under 10? No juice options. I am happy to let my 6 year old only have water but they insisted on delivering soda to the table so we let them. We didn't drink it or open the can, but soda only for children is unacceptable and unfortunate. I am not going back to eat here. read more

Also if you order the curry which is just under $10 it will probably be enough for for two to three meals, it's a big portion. The same goes for their great tasting pho, it's a huge bowl of food! I think this place is great! The people who work here are sweet, very humble, hospitable, and they serve very tasty food! I got the egg rolls and green curry soup. The egg rolls were perfectly crispy with a thick flavor. I added a bit of red pepper sauce to the dipping sauce and it was a perfect blend of sweet and spicy. The soup was delicious, the curry sauce was very rich. As far as asian foods go...I must say that this is by far one of my favorites up here in Humboldt county. Not only did I grow up eating this stuff, I eat it out and about throughout the world and no Pho Hoang isn't the best, but it's not the worst out there either. For what Arcata and Humboldt county has to offer as its current pho offerings, Pho Hoang wins it over the others. The pricing is kind of up there as far as what it generally is, but the staff is nice, it's a cute and clean restaurant and they are trying to be as authentic as it gets (at least the people cooking the Vietnamese food is actually Vietnames!) read more

I was so excited for there to be a Vietnamese place in Arcata and was excited to try it out. I went last week with my bf and we ordered saki, veg spring rolls, veg vermicelli and veg pho. The saki was strong and the spring rolls were good but on the small side. My bf did not like the rolls. The place was also a bit crowded and noisy so it was a bit hard to have a conversation. My bf ordered pho and he liked it and I thought it was good too but for some reason my vermicelli came with the same peanut sauce they gave us with the rolls. What the what?! My bf asked if they had the vermicelli sauce instead of peanut sauce and the server told us that that was what the vermicelli came with and I wasn't sure what other sauce he offered to bring but it did not sound right. As I ate my noodles with the peanut sauce, I just couldn't enjoy it. The peanut sauce was too sweet to be eating as part of the main dish and not just a side dip. My bf gave me some of his broth to eat with my dish and I took most of it to go and mixed with his leftovers after. The servers are overly attentive to the point that it seemed like they were kicking us out once we had paid even though we wanted to finish the saki and enjoy it and they had not picked up our plates.
