Im not sure if this can be an great review since I only come here for Josies Pho fix and im not a huge fan of Pho in general. However I do appreciate how much they give you, I always split a large and its more than enough to fill me and my husband up for the time. I came in and ordered chicken soup pho. The wait for my food was super long while everyone else who came in after me got their food. My food came out and I got beef soup pho with chicken meat! I asked the server and they told me it's suppose to be like that, unless I ask for chicken soup as well. Who the heck put beef broth instead of chicken broth? Anyway, I did asked for "pho ga". In these tough economic times there's comfort in knowing that should all else fail I could probably still scrounge up enough as a street performer or panhandler to eat an affordable bowl of Pho Dac Biet daily. I'm not exactly sure what my talent would be, as mentioned in a previous review I'm an air guitar virtuoso (this would probably get me committed which would result in me being fed but not free), I do play the Kalimba (maybe people would pay for me to stop momentarily), or I could charge a quarter for sarcastic comments (maybe alternatively offer cheap counseling services, same thing just marketed differently). Fortunately things aren't nearly this bad yet, but it's peace of mind to have a plan in place. But back to Pho Dac Biet, Vietanamese slow cooked broth noodle soup w/ eye round steak, flank, tendon, brisket and tripe. I've been trying to get people to call this "Everything Pho", you know like "Everything Bagel"....yeah you get it, but I'm trying to be less cryptic (I don't know why). Anyway this stuff is comfort food for me, and here it's entirely decent. As our new mayor Don B. noted it's weirdly too nice inside. I'm used to hole-in-the wall soon to be condemned pho joints. It'll take some getting used to. I mean I don't expect them to tag the place, scuff the tables, or spit on the floor....I think its just that I don't find nice places very comforting (I suppose I'm dirty that way). My order of Pho Dac Biet had all the necessary side components (the greens, the sauces). The broth I thought was average, about the same as what I've experienced elsewhere. I felt like the beef parts could have been more generous, thankfully my better half had tendons she didn't want (does that sound strange to you too?). I also would've liked more noodles, but I'm just nitpicking like I said before as whole the pho was entirely decent. So here's my analogy of the Vietnamese places dotting 82nd and the areas surrounding the newly formed Jade District. To me they are like going to Little Italy in New York City. You know that any Italian restaurant you go into, you will get a great meal. Well, the same goes with all the pho restaurants. Anyone you go into, you'll leave with a happy and full belly. Like most of the other places Pho Hung's pricing of pho is roughly the same. A small here is $8, which is pretty much the norm and you get a rather large bowl, plus tea and all the veggies you can cram into your bowl of goodness. Yes, the broth is the most important part, and Pho Hung has a good simple broth. This one was better than most because of a nice and clean broth. This one was also good because there was a lot of meat and it went all the way till the end of the bowl. I always like that. The rest of the menu is pretty standard with rice dishes and vermicelli bowls and also reasonably priced. This location has the great soup minus the stickiness of the other location. Pho is one of my favorite comfort foods during the winter. The warm broth with veggies and beef is amazing on a cold day. Pho Hung has one of the best broths in Portland. Has great flavor without being too oniony. The complimentary tea is also a nice touch. The small size here is still plenty big. Unless you are a BIG eater get the small. They also have many variations of what goes into the soup.....so if you aren't comfortable with tripe you can have it left out. Pho Hung is hands down my favourite pho place in Portland. Even though it's a fairly large establishment the ambiance is one of a small mom and pop joint. The service is impeccable, the staff is always friendly, and the veggies are always incredibly fresh. We enjoyed this spot. The wait was quite long on a Sunday afternoon, but that was to be expected. We left our number and they called us about 25 minutes later that our table was ready. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. Started off with salad rolls. Tasty and fresh. They took quite a while to get to the table, but they were very good. Each of us had pho. My husband always gets the traditional with rare round steak. I got a fatty brisket and meatballs. My favorite. The broth is so good here. Tons of flavor, while not being very greasy. The meat was tasty. The meatballs are spongy just the way I like them! The trimmings,, basil bean sprouts and jalapeño, very fresh and inviting. I had a Thai iced tea. Came already mixed in a plastic glass with lots of ice and a straw. It was sweet and yummy. The service is very attentive and quick. These folks are trying their best to serve the community with the restrictions that they have to follow. Had a good lunch there today. Snow day so brought the kiddo who scarfed down his shrimp and pork chop plate. He loved the meats and rice, nibbling on the veggies and skipping the "dusty noodles" as he tried and did not like. No idea what side dish they are as I'm more of a "that one!" Orderer than learn every name. (You should see me try to order at dim sum not knowing a single name despite eating it for many years). I just got the super bowl of pho. It was tasty goodness. I take out the tripe, I like the flavor it adds to the soup but not eating it straight up. Not the best pho ever but it was very good, showed up on time and all the sides to add were in clean containers. Service was fine. We fared well. Saw an older Hispanic couple get up and leave unserved (not sure why) and saw an older Vietnamese couple get served extra fast (suspect owners or regulars). I just moved into this part of Portland and have admittedly been a little overwhelmed at the choices of pho and other Asian food spots, but after a bit of trial and error I ended up at Pho Hung on 82nd and WOW - yes, this is very, very, very good pho. I also got an order of egg rolls and they were delicious too, a little greasier than I tend to prefer, but they hit the spot. But really, I can't emphasize enough how good the pho was -- flavorful broth, fresh ingredients, solid flavor. I ordered take-out and my food was ready in 15 minutes as promised. I was a little surprised to see a pretty crowded eat-in space, since I haven't really gotten back to eating in since the pandemic, but folks seemed to be pretty diligent about masking when not actively eating, and staff was definitely masked and being as safe as possible for the Covid era. It must be the time of the day that I go because sunlight spills into the place and its lit with a golden glow. There are TVs available if your companion is not entertaining enough. It has its own parking lot. The service is fine and as with most pho places, the pho comes out first. Checking out tends to take a little longer because there's one person who does it and every time I've been here, she's no where to be found. It's a tad (ok, more than a tad. I am that impatient). The waiters are pleasant when you arrive but once you order, that's pretty much all the contact there is aside from your food and beverages being delivered to you. For Portland, probably the best pho place. As far as comparably to other places, this is below average. PHO TAI: - pho with rare beef - the pho broth had a decent taste to it - the noodles though were a bit on the rougher side - there was also a fair amount of meat SERVICE: decent as there weren't very many people in the restaurant. We pretty much came shortly as they opened since we wanted to get our day started rather early. ENVIRONMENT: Could tell the owners spent a good amount of money remodeling the place to make it look more tropical. There are a couple of big screen TVs for your entertainment pleasure. The restaurant is also rather large. Overall, decent place to get pho in the PDX area. It's located with all the other Asian goods like the supermarket and other Asian eateries. The prices are probably up to par with other Portland pho establishments since there probably not as many out there compared to LA. The food is decent and not terrible. Worst! Worst! Worst! If you work at a restaurant and can't take the orders of the food at the restaurant, wtf are you doing working there? When we ordered, we asked for no cilantro, the waiter asked "no onion and no cilantro?" to which we said, yes green and white onion, no cilantro. Then we ordered a large bowl of pho with Gau gan. The waiter could not understand what we we're ordering and tried to wave another person to take our order. Our food came out with no onions and cilantro and the other order came with no gan. We asked to speak to the manager and they said ok and walked away. 10 mins later the cashier comes to ask if we needed anything else. We asked for the manager again and they told us no manager. We explained that our food didn't come out right and she explained they were out of tendon. Holy smokes... If I went to a burger joint and they ran out of beef patties, this is the equivalent of getting a chicken sandwich instead... If I could give less than 1 star, this would be -5 stars.
