We came in with my service dog and was denied service. We gently tried to explain that it's the law to allow service dogs. He kept shaking his head, saying "customers complain and my boss say no". This is a cute little hipster rendition of a Vietnamese restaurant on the corner of Alberta. It is rather atypical, where the customer orders at the cashier, get their own water and silverware, and bus their own tables. Prices seem a little steeper, at nearly $20 per bowl. The taste was very savory and traditional, the beef very tender. The owner was running the restaurant by himself. He was personally very pleasant and accommodating, checking on us often. Absolute hug in a bowl! Usually I love eating pho in cold and rainy days but I'm so glad to have tried this place out during the peak summer season. The ambience inside is very cozy and quaint, tucked away in the corner of the street so it might be easy to miss. The owner greeted us and we paid at the counter before we sat down. The menu is small but has everything you need - even a vegan pho! There's a shelf with a bunch of utensils/sauces/bowls/etc. you grab yourself before the pho comes out. I just love Thom so much! My favorite soup here is the curry noodle but anything you order will be a favorite! The menu is small and perfect. The soups are huge and warm and delicious. We enter the tiny dining room and order at the counter. A man greets us and takes out order of two Pho Bo. We opt for water, gather some chopsticks, spoons, and napkins and sit. The pho is served within five minutes. The broth is steaming hot, chunks of rare beef simmering along with meatballs, herbs, and onions. I add a single jalepeno slice, some basil, and bean sprouts and dig in. The broth is rich and flavorful. I can taste the star anise and all the notes from the bone broth. This is not a delicate soup, it's richer than most pho here in Portland. The broth is so good, I leave the hoisin and sriracha aside. The noodles have a little bite to them, which is nice. Before I know it after some slurping and good conversation my bowl is empty. I would go so far to say this is my favorite bowl of Pho in Portland now. It's also $20 for a bowl of soup which feels like a lot of money for a bowl of soup. But maybe that's just the way it is these days. Order at the counter and the food comes to your table. Good little quiet pho spot. I'm no pho connoisseur but I like it here, tastes very good, I liked the Beef Pho even though it didn't have tripe or tendon. See a lot of complaints about the portion size here but I think it's a great portion. I would much rather pay under $20 for a bowl of pho I can finish and feel comfortably full from instead of paying more for a stomach splitting amount. I also tried the Com Ga (chicken & rice) which was a huge portion of chicken indeed. It was pretty good, tender well cooked chicken but the flavor was a little one note, I got a bit bored of it halfway thru. Good bowl of pho but I wouldn't drive 40 min again for it. Service was quick and friendly. Cute small hole in the wall. Maybe I should have ordered something else on the menu or it was an off day but I would say I prefer Pho Oregon. They did say they were out of limes due to a missed shipment. Finally found our go to pho spot that isn't a far drive for us! This place is really small so if you're going in a group I suggest you get there right at opening or be prepared to wait. Our party of two got the last table around 5:30pm on a Saturday and we saw countless people come after and quoted 30-40 min for a wait. I think there may have only been one or two people working because the man in the kitchen came out to take our order then went back to get our food. This is not an easy life. At the owner's suggestion, I ordered the chicken pho. The chicken was plentiful and ridiculously tender. The broth was nothing special. It lacked the finesse of a really fine pho broth. Here's what put me off: I wanted to order the shrimp pho. The owner told me it's not very good since the shrimp is frozen. Please. I'm begging you. Do not put an item on your menu you're not proud of, especially on what is already a very limited menu. Just take it off instead of talking customers out of ordering. read more

Don't be fooled by the millennial branding. This was the worst bun thit I have ever had. The cucumber, carrot and lettuce were not fresh and tasted like they had been sliced days prior, and the vermicelli noodles waterlogged and soggy. There were no fresh herbs and barely any peanuts sprinkled atop the tough pork. Instantly my #1 or #2. Happy - It was the first thought that came to mind when the broth touched my lips. I remembered by baby sister and how she knows to say "I'm happy", though she doesn't know many other words yet. :) I had to let the cashier/server know! The beef broth is made over 48 hours and it shows. It's so flavorful. The amazing taste stayed in my mouth/ mind for hours. The noodles were perfect cooked, al dente; perfectly firm when bitten. The beansprouts and basil were perfect. I feel as though they give everyone the perfect amount of food as to waste nothing. The meat was so, so good. This place is absolutely under-rated right now on Yelp. That's probably because it's relatively new and in a smaller building. But I think the small building is what makes it perfect and beautiful. It's also situated in a great neighborhood with so many other foods! Such a varied this block has. This place is very clean. They have many drinks and snacks to be sold as well. There were bags of chips, pork/chicken fried skin chips. The tea was given to me in such an artistic cup. The bowl for the beef pho had character. The chopsticks were made of wood and were strong. I need to go back to this place. I need to bring my friends and family. It is now either #1 or #2 in my favorite phos of Portland, Oregon. Tan Tan Cafe & Delicatessen rivals this place as my #1 or #2. They are both their own flavors which are amazing. But, Thom's has better beef broth and noodles; the meats are still great but Tan Tan gives much more meat. As I said though, Thom's gives the perfect amount of food. A second bowl would have been too much at the moment. :) Thom's was started by Vietnamese immigrants I believe who first went to California. California is known for its Vietnamese population and pho/boba in the Bay Area. These people are a great representation of Vietnamese cuisine and culture which I can see in their pho and respect. We came by on a snowy-day when almost no other places were open or already in process of closing. They have a limited menu which may be rotating given it's written on a chalkboard. The Boh Ko (beef stew) was very flavorful and the beef itself was tender. The Pho was a little on the under-seasoned side. The egg rolls were the best - fried upon ordering and comes with tasty fish sauce. How it works: 1) you at the counter and seat yourself (limited seating) 2) grab your own utensils and condiments (+1 for having the OG sriracha!) Came on a rainy day and decided to try 3 of the items: pho, bun and chicken. As some people mentioned, the pho is a smaller bowl for $14, but it does include plenty of different cut of meats and even meatballs. The broth is excellent, we thought pho was the best of the 3. Bun thit nuong was the runner up with delicious grilled pork on top. I would definitely order either of these again. I'm not as impressed with the com ga though, while I don't think it's bad, I don't think the flavor is as developed as the pho. This was everything i had hoped it would be after reading so much about it we finally got to go. The somewhat limited hours helped delay our visit (along with some other stuff not related). One thing that stood out about this place besides the excellent pho was the portion size is a lot smaller than you would expect, not those giant bowls you get elsewhere. That may be a good or bad thing depending on your appitite but we found it mostly good since we could actually finish our portions. The pork and chicken dishes looked a lot larger so if you are starving consider that. I'm very judgmental about food (sorry - Yelp elite here!) and especially picky about Asian food. I was so impressed by everything at Thom! The atmosphere feels like you're eating in auntie's kitchen, very homey, and auntie has trendy kids to help her decorate the room. I love that you can buy authentic drinks and snacks at the counter. And I especially love that the menu is small and built with purpose - you can order the best of the best of what they have to offer. I ordered the Com Gha (chicken and rice) and it was To. Die. For. One of the best chicken marinades I've had in a while and cooked to perfection. The pickled veggies were not too sour and a perfect complement to the dish. My husband ordered pho. I didn't get a chance to try his broth before he added all his usual fixings, but what I did taste was huge depth of flavor without being too heavy. They have bike racks right outside the restaurant and they are on the corner of the street with plenty of neighborhood street parking. I rarely leave negative reviews but I'm lost why all the websites and reviewers rate this place so high when there's way better pho in Portland. Small portion size, chewy meat, flavorless broth, sriracha from a plastic packet (Lee Kum Kee, not the Huy Fong bottle every restaurant uses).
