Three days later, the clothes I wore that night retain the aura of fetid cooking oil. Must do the laundry. And the oil and smoke were eye-burning thick that evening. At least one of the star omissions is due to this - fix the ventilation!! I'll start with a few observations: I've noted this before, but there are numerous establishments with inflated [IMHO] ratings due to location and clientele. That is, if you get people who haven't been exposed to a variety of cuisine suddenly eating "exotic" foods (Indian, Thai, etc), then anything beyond Panera becomes "awesome" and 5 stars. So if I'm wavering on a star rating, I may err lower to balance out the existing high count of 5 star reviews. But once again at Pho Lang Thang, I may not be the demographic, which based upon my readings are young professional transplants in OTR. Also, a restaurant should be as good on a Sunday as it is on a Friday night, so I don't excuse for "well, it was a Sunday." Hell, it's the lord's day, and she likes to eat. So get it right every day you're open! Our Sunday visit (6pm): Service good. Charmingly hipster-esque. Out of tripe (so none in the pho). Out of Goi (salads). Really? We did have the "salad roll" (a bit bland, could use more mint/cilantro/basil/carrot or something, or grilled not poached pork, and it was fridge temp so too cold), and fried spring roll, which was good (but if it weren't I'd have lowered the rating just for that). Food was well presented. Bun bowl very good according to my companion; chicken well seasoned and grilled right. Not vermicelli, but thicker rice noodles. I had the medium pho w/beef, meatballs, and tendon (see tripe note above). The broth was more like 48-60 hours (not 24); pretty thick consistency that I haven't experienced before (and a hair oily). And there wasn't enough of it for the amount of noodles etc (IMHO). But it wasn't horrible by any means. So cut to the chase: I wouldn't make it a destination. But if I were in the area, and only Vietnamese would do, I would/will give it another try, if only to see how the repairs on the ventilation are coming along. read more

Ok..so..first and foremost, I am not a fan of Pho. I actually don't like it all. So why you ask would I go to a place that is so predominantly Pho oriented that it literally has it in the restaurants name? Well, you know, sometimes everyone in your family loves Pho and you're hanging out one afternoon and that's just where you end up going. So, basically, this review is being written for anyone who might be in a similar situation as me..not being a fan of Pho but being brought here by a bunch of people that love it. If you're looking for a detailed review of the Pho itself..well then this review is not for you. We went on an early Saturday afternoon and the place was PACKED. There's an okay amount of seating but for how popular the place seems to be..maybe not enough. We were quoted a fifteen minutes wait for our party of six..and it ended up being close to an hour. This was not the fault of the staff by any means tho. There aren't that many options in there for a party of six, so we had to wait for another party of six to be finished to take their table. They finished their food and then literally sat there for an additional half hour..knowing full well how busy the place was and that they were holding up everything. No joke. So frustrating. The wait quote would've been more accurate if these idiots would've not decided to veg out for a half hour after they were done eating. Some people are just clueless to the world and situations around them sometimes..oh well..what can you do. Anywho, the hosts and servers were overly apologetic for the extremely long wait..but we weren't mad..again..it wasn't their fault. Once seated I began scanning the menu looking for something that sounded good. I came across the "Banh Mi" section..basically sandwiches. Looking through them the one I thought I would enjoy the most was the "Bahn Mi Cha Lya Nuong"..or the Grilled Pork Sausage. I went ahead and ordered that..minus the do chua and the cucumber cillantro that came with it..but I said to go ahead and put the sauces that they normally would..and add some jalapeños for an extra kick. So bascially..the Grilled Pork Sausage sandwich with no veggies (except jalapeños). Yup..that sums up my kind of food pretty much. My nephew ordered the Spring Rolls..which were the other item on the menu I thought I would enjoy..and he agreed to let me try one (knowing full well that he is such a finicky eater I would probably end up with at least one full spring roll to try). The food came out pretty quickly. The sandwich was good..very interesting flavors. The baguette they used was perfect..the sausage was really tender and flavorful. The sauces they use made it taste..interesting. I could've sworn I tasted something with a peanut-buttery flavor to it..but I'm not sure what that could've been. Now the spring rolls were excellent. They were just honestly delicious. Crisp, flavorful, just the right thickness. I would definitely get those again. It has to be of note that the service here was absolutely wonderful. Our waitress, Courtney, could not have been better. She was friendly, accommodating..our orders were put in very quickly and our food came out just as we had ordered it. She was patient with the kids in our group as well (trust me, patience with them can be a bit difficult at times). And then at the end she made sure we got an additional discount for the extra time we had to wait for our table. She didn't have to do that..we would have never expected her to..but she did anyways. Just overall some of the best service I have seen in a very long time. Kudos to her. So there you have it..non-Pho eaters..a sandwich and some spring rolls. There's your go to if you ever find yourself here. Both were very decent. Between that and the superior service we received..I absolutely would recommend this place. read more

My favorite Bahn Mi + Vietnamese coffee that I've had so far in Cincinnati! Their gòi cuôn doesn't quite beat my favorite place back home (if you're in cle you have to stop by #1 Pho) but it's still tasty. The Pho is also amazing! I've had both the chicken and their special, I can't quite remember what is all in it, I think 3 type of meat but it was perfect. I take all of my friends here that haven't had Vietnamese food and they are blown away. Whether you love Vietnamese or are new to trying it you will love this place :) Plus the location is so nice right in the heart of OTR, you can take your food to sit at the market and then walk it off in the city. read more

Whenever we are craving Pho this is our go to in Cincinnati. We tried a few other Pho places but not a huge fan of the previous ones we tried. I always get the beef stew they have, it's a huge quantity and tastes great! Lots of flavor - love the broth taste too! Growing up near little Saigon in California, I've had my fair share of amazing pho. The pho here is off. Sometimes its super oily, so the fatty broth gives the illusion that it's a rich broth, but it leaves you with lip gloss looking lips. And more often than not, the broth is just bland. I don't think they're using enough spices. I don't taste the star anise, the cinnamon, or any of the umami flavors that makes pho one of my favorite foods of all time. I guess I kinda taste the onion in the soup, but the balance of flavors is wrong. The only thing that saves this broth is if you dump half a bottle of sriracha in it, but that defeats the whole purpose of pho. If you have to add condiments to the broth to save it, it's not good pho. Also, a bowl of pho here is pricy, and it doesn't really contain anything that justifies the price. I got a regular bowl of brisket pho. It has a lot of rice noodles (which is great) but it skimps out on the meat. What it looks like they do here is they gets their slices of brisket and they cut it in half. So you have a lot of little pieces of brisket that don't really add up to anything. I've never been to a pho place that slices their brisket like this. It gives the illusion that it is a lot of meat, when in reality, it's nothing. I don't mean to sound mean. Pho is supposed to feel like a warm comforting hug. This bowl didn't feel like that, so I'm sad :[ P.S. their Vietnamese coffee and banh mi are not bad (dare, I say, pretty good), so there's that? read more

I love Pho Lang Thang!! Their service can be spotty at times but the great food makes up for it. I've had nearly everything on the menu and have never been disappointed. When I go to Findlay Market I always pop in for a coffee on my way. This place has a variety of gluten-free options. I got the pho with beef (broth and rice noodles) and it was fantastic. It was filling, even with the smallest portion (and around $6). I'm a huge huge fan of Pho Lang Thang! I hate to admit that I haven't had the opportunity to try the majority of the menu, because I strictly stick with the pho because it is truly and seriously delicious! I love the chicken, rare steak and brisket pho options. The broth is so so flavorful and all the additions (onions, jalapeños, herbs, etc) are always fresh and the portion is plenty. Obviously the best times to eat pho are on cool, rainy days but Pho Lang Thang is my fav and I will eat in any conditions! When I have a craving for pho I head straight to Pho Lang Thang. And that is most Saturdays for lunch! A trip to @findlaymarket just isn't complete without a stop here. Super fresh sprouts, mint, cilantro, jalapeños and lime to add as you like. I like them all! Although watch the jalapeños! They are always good and hot. The broth, rice noodles and spices are even better on a cool fall morning. The fresh spring rolls with peanut sauce are a perfect light starter. Looked up "Lang thang" translation and means to wander. Well wander on over to Findlay Market, grab some fresh produce and more, listen to a band and get some of the best pho around. We SO loved this place before they moved to their current location. Always fabulous in its small, but bustling surroundings. And once they moved( prior to Covid) the food was still excellent. We were worried the quality would become second to its new digs. Today, we were completely ripped off. Fatty pork, beef with gristle, NO lemongrass flavor, a disgusting joke of a banh mi slopped together with gelatinous fat, and a gangster move on two noodle bowls. No mint, no cilantro, no Thai basil, no peanuts. But, instead a mountain of cold vermicelli and lettuce with a few pieces of gelatinous, fatty pork and gristly beef in both bowls. Never again. I wish that I could rate this place higher but an A-OK rating is about as high as I feel PLT deserves. After several visits I came to the conclusion that their pho is not very flavorful unless I douse it with sriracha, like Jen M mentions. The restaurant's dining area during the summer is quite hot and as Grace D mentioned, bugs tend to buzz around which is not something I enjoy unless I am camping or actually eating outside. The ventilation system, if there is one, does not seem to exhaust the oil rapidly enough and one leaves the restaurant smelling like they worked in the kitchen instead of dining. With as many food options in the area, I would only fall back on PLT if I really craved some Pho or other Asian food. read more

As of right now, this is my go to place whenever I crave for some Pho. And to be honest, I only ordered Pho (and Vegetable Spring Roll every now and then) everytime I visit them, I should probably explore their menu next time but for now their Pho is a must try. This is one of my favorite pho places in town. Its location is perfectly tucked in Findlay Market. There is a parking lot right around the corner if you don't want to bother looking for street parking ($2 per hour). It's usually packed in there so it's nice to be able to wander around while you wait for a table. My go to order is the small pho (brisket, tripe and tendon) for $9.50. (I prefer to substitute brisket with beef meatball though.) I asked my bean sprouts to be steamed (to keep my broth hot), extra jalapeños and a side of fish sauce (in case I need it to be saltier). The food was good. We had a beef sandwich that was outstanding. My buddy told be they were really good size but in our experience we did not find this to be the case(manager took some off the check for this concern). The bowl we had was very nice. My salt container was empty and I had no soy sauce. I found myself reaching over to another table to grab one of each. I made the waiter aware and he addressed the situation right away. These are just basics things that should be taken care of at night. The soy sauce does not have a label so you don't know if it is lite or not. I ordered a side of tripe to go with my bowl and instead of being charged as a bowl with three items I was charged more for the side. Not to worry it was a good helping. Next time I'll know. I heard good things about this from a friend and looked it up and saw it was on diners and dives with Guy. Would I come back, yes. It is the second time I have had Vietnamese food and it is ok to me. I don't think it is something I'll crave but if I get the invite I would not pass it up. Eat we'll all. It was just the little things that cost it a star in my mind. Who LOVES Pho!!?? well I do, so that is why im giving it a 5 star. I have been in Cincinnati for almost 4 years and I have been coming to this deliciousness greater than 20 times. Recent new renovations, they have moved right across the street from Findlay market (used to be right inside the block). The new building is equipped with a brand new bar and a sparkling new personality! haha, but what is the most important is that the Pho is as delicious as always. Their broth brings salivation when thinking about it over and over. The service is friendly, the environment is fun and the coffee is even unique (with a little condensed milk). I also tried their pork sandwiches with a little pate and their roll's as an appetizer, it is the perfect meal. I will continue to be a loyal customer. They recently moved across the street from Findlay Market and it's a huge improvement. Restaurant is warm and inviting with plenty of space. The food is incredible and this has always been on my short list of restaurants and continues at the new place. If you're originally from an area with a lot of Vietnamese restaurants to pick from, you're definitely not going to like this place. It's definitely pretty and swanky on the inside but the pho tai was probably one of the worst pho's I have ever ordered. The pho was completely devoid of flavor; it was straight up beef broth...overly salty with no aromatics, sweetness, etc. The beef wasn't chewy, so that's a plus, and the portion size was great, but I didn't even feel inclined to really finish it. Very nice taste. Ambience is warm and well coming. Drove from lex to try this Vietnamese food. Hardly 5-10 min from fountain square. Tried Shrimp+Pork Spring roll and Vegan Spring rolls, both were seem fresh and tasty. Peanut sauce though was okay, I have tasted better peanut sauce in Lex. Bo Kho soup is their speciality. It was really tasty and spicy. Beef was tender and rice noodles were soft. They will give you extra salad (cilantro, jalapenos etc) with soup for no extra cost. Wife tried chicken pho. It was okay in taste. We were expecting some spice, but it was lacking. May that is how it supposed to be. Chicken quantity exceeds expectations. Soup quantity (large) is more than enough for 1 person. Service is good. Next time I would live to try some sandwiches. read more
