My friends Urvish T and Ashley L are on a pad Thai adventure, looking for the Best in Buffalo and trying a variety of places as we go. After our first pad Thai night Pho Lantern is out second stop. I had no clue this was the old Niagara Seafood however I also admit I was never there. Parking appears to be only on the street and walking up the exterior is very unassuming however walking in they done a cute job with the place. The counter is immediately to your right upon walking in, someone will seat you. Check out the adorable koi image on the window facing the door, across from there and acting as a wall in the dining room is a mermaid glass wall. Additionally there is a stone tile with a variety of salt aquariums for your viewing pleasure. The chairs are comfy enough and the tables set apart just enough to give some intimacy to your conversation, well I know I couldn't really hear the tables around us but I don't know if they could hear us. We decided to split a few dishes since we didn't want to do a repeat of our previous experience and order 3 pad Thais that ended up being disappointing. Additionally if you check-in on Yelp you can get a free soda. For our meals we ordered the special of the night, the muscle appetizer which I enjoyed due to the coconut sauce, to me I could taste the hint of coconut and a little heat but neither was over powering, my only wish was some sort of bread soak up some of the juices and slices vegetables. Additionally we ordered the crispy fish selecting the calamari, served with buns we made little calamari sandwiches. I really enjoyed the crunch of the breading with the ginger/garlic/sweet chili sauce. Our main courses we spilt the a pad thai; heat level 2, a shaking beef and a third dish I can't remember. My only disappointment was the shaking beef, described as having a smokey crunch the beef was actually to dry and hard to chew but the sauce it was served it was tasty. I also recommend to toss your pad Thai before dining as the sauce really sinks to the bottom so although we thought heat level 2 was really light we had a tad more of a punch once we got towards the bottom. My main disappointment was the level of service. We went on a Tuesday night which we didn't expect to be busy however after we arrived they got packed and after Urvish T talked to the one employee he found out apparently they were closed last week for vacation so apparently everyone must have been trying to get their fix and because of that I'm giving it a pass. We decided to try this place for a change. The calamari app was over-cooked and the sauce too sweet for me. I tried the Won-ton noodle soup. It was way too salty. The Won-tons are the frozen kind. We just came from Niagara falls and on our way to Plymouth Massachusetts. We were looking for a restaurant on the way. And we chanced upon this restaurant. After we were seated, it took a while before a server got to us. But after she came over, she got our orders and gave us our utensils and drinks right away. Our orders arrived shortly after. In town visiting family and came across this resturant. We found this place based on yelp reviews and wanted to give it a try. First and foremost, don't judge a book by its cover. Outside may look unappealing, but inside is very clean and modern. They are up to date in terms of technology. Now lets talk about the food. Everything was great and I have no complaints at all. Drove from Rochester to Buffalo just for a seafood craving... Upon entrance, the restaurant is spacious and very modern. They just added an aquarium next to the seating area so you can enjoy your meal while finding dory. If you write a Yelp review, you can get a free appetizer of your choice or two free desserts of your choice. Appetizer- Crispy shrimp with ginger and garlic 6 pieces of crispy succulent shrimps with bell peppers, onions, and garlic that's to be eaten inside of a gua bao. Definitely would recommend getting Entree- Grilled pork, ham & egg on rice Not your traditional com suon with a grilled pork chop but nonetheless really flavorful. Don't be put off by the absence of any sign indicating that this place is indeed Pho Lantern, nor by the neon lights or covered windows. Inside is a surprisingly pleasant Vietnamese restaurant (other than the over abundance of televisions) with a curious side line in sautéed fresh seafood and Thai food. The pho is good, in the way that most pho is good, albeit the broth was a little sweet and there weren't enough herbs, limes, and peppers. The papaya salad was unusually good, and I'm not sure why. I wouldn't drive across town for it, but it did remind me that I should look for more Vietnamese food in my life. read more

They call this place Niagara Seafood because they actually fish everything they serve right out of the Horseshoe Falls. That is why this place is so expensive and yet always so fresh - it's a death-defying and extremely intricate way of gathering goods to stock these shelves. OK, I just made that up. They import everything they sell from Vietnam. OK, I made that up too. On with the review. It's not expensive at all by the way. Edit: having been back here a few times, the bubbles are always very old and congealed, and the Coconut Bubble Tea has been rancid and undrinkable the last few times. I have only knocked off 1 star so far, but if this experience continues, then it will lose more over time. If you want to skip the review, the bottom line is, you'll probably like the Bahn Mi, but the best thing here is the COCONUT BUBBLE TEA although I get it without bubbles because I'm not crazy into bubbles anyway, and the ones here don't taste so great. Well usually I'd see that all the local Yelp-ers met up at some place or other and I'd try it (if I hadn't already) and I'd sigh a deep sigh wondering why everyone loved the place and I didn't. Thankfully, I was delighted to see that the Yelpers all met up at this place instead. Very awesome! It's in a bad part of town, the food is cheap and good, and I am quite sure they were delighted with the business, and deserved it. I've only tried 3 things from here. The world-famous Bahn Mi, which you cannot get anywhere else in Buffalo as far as I know - it's a delicious dreamy roasted pork sandwich with lots of veggies on it - it's not as good as the some of the ones I've had in other cities, especially the one in San Francisco, and the best one in the country at Nam Nam in Brooklyn NY. But the odds are, if you try it, you'll absolutely love it - it's cheap too - under $5 and filling. Then I tried their delicious coconut bubble tea. I wasn't a huge fan of the bubbles but the coconut itself was divine, I'd definitely go back to get one. In fact I have gone back at least 10 times and had one. Now I get it without the bubbles in it, and oh my god, it's like coconut heaven. Seriously, this drink is THE reason I go back here. I do like the Bahn Mi but I don't even order it anymore. I just get the Coconut Bubble Tea with no Bubbles. And it was fairly cheap too, at only $3 when Bubble Tea is sometimes a little pricey these days. The other thing was a bottle of Thai Tea, which is still in my fridge because I noticed it was three weeks past its expiration date and has chunks of milk floating around inside it, and so haven't been able to stomach (or risk) it yet. But on the whole, between the Bahn Mi and the Coconut Bubble Tea, this place scores very highly and I will be back! So Niagara Seafood has been making changes! Yay! I went back a few times since the updates and I think they've made some very big strides. The interior looks quite different from when I first went here. The seafood market aspect of this place is now completely gone and has converted itself to a full-up restaurant. The service timing has improved thanks to an increased headcount and the menu has been enlarged to include more variants of Pho. In fact, the Pho quality has vastly improved to a point where it ranks pretty high on my charts. My wife seems to like this place the best for Pho. I'd like to see a few more options but one of the good things is that you can choose different sizes. This is a plus in my view. I typically go for the L size but if you're really hungry you can take a stab at trying the XL. The pho itself isn't very greasy and the broth is deep and flavorful. The meat count could be a bit higher but I think the quality has shown dramatic increases. Another favorite is the top snails. I personally am not a fan of things like snails but this place does a good job of it. The sauce it comes with is nice and sweet and offers a nice diversion from the fact that you're eat a snail! Overall, the quality and service improvements have warranted an uptick in their rating so have a go... try it out and enjoy! read more

We didn't want to give Niagara Seafood a five star review because all of our reviews as of late have been stellar. It doesn't seem possible to go to four Buffalo restaurants in a row and give them all 5/5 stars but Niagara Seafood deserves every star it has been awarded. What a gem. Setting: The restaurant is tucked away in the west side of Buffalo across the street from a shady convenience store and next door to an Asian produce market. The inside of the restaurant is clean and casual. It features salt water aquariums next to most of the tables and cool blue lighting that showcases traditional wall decorations. The servers were very considerate and were glad to explain some of the foreign items on the menu after laughing with us about our unfamiliarity. Menu: The menu is huge. It contains all of the classics such as Pho and Tom Yum, assorted spring rolls with peanut sauce, Thai Curry, a King's Seafood Platter, and Pad Thai as well as some kickers like fried quail. Food: We ordered an appetizer of two spring rolls and two bowls of Pho. The spring rolls were good- a little heavy on the rice and light on the protein but it tasted fresh. The Pho was fantastic. The bowls came with Thai basil, CUlantro, sprouts, and red hot chili garlic paste that one could put on table side. Go easy on the hot sauce. I don't think either of us even had time to breathe while we inhaled the Pho. I don't see how it could get any better than this because it was fantastic. Overall: Niagara Seafood is the bomb dot com. Niagara Seafood? The first time I drove past this place, I assumed it was a wholesale company dealing in frozen lobsters and crab legs, lined with freezer cases. And there are in fact freezers in Niagara Seafood, and a fishtank, too. But they're nicely corralled against the walls of an otherwise spacious, sunny Vietnamese restaurant, with a smattering of tables in the center and a counter at the back. Standing at the counter, you can peruse a grid of food photos, helpfully numbered for the non-Vietnamese speaker. From spring rolls to pork sandwiches, they've got a fair range of dishes covered. They've even got a Vietnamese version of the traditional Buffalo fish fry that I can.not wait to try! On our exploratory mission, we ordered milk tea flavored bubble tea that came out slightly on the sweet side. We tried the beef pho, which seemed light on the beef and also contained tripe. The spring rolls were tasty, with hefty slices of shrimp and a savory dipping sauce. And my tofu banh mi was just what I wanted -- made with a fresh, crusty baguette, fried strips of tofu, pickled carrots and cilantro, and spread with a light aioli. With a little spicy sauce, it was downright delicious. What I didn't try was the avocado shakes -- as I'd already decided mid-meal that I needed a reason to return. Went to here this week for the working lunch with my fellows. This is a pretty good place with all the ocean decoration, and three big fish bowls. The food is not only cheap but also amazing delicious. We had chicken wing with Tanglie sauce, lunch specials (VN sub. Steamed dumpling and VN noodle), which are all very good. I love niagara seafood! I can't believe I haven't written a review on them yet. So first of all you have to understand what to expect when you go here. Don't go here expecting very much atmosphere, although they have been fixing it up a little, it's still just a seafood market with some tables. For me that's part of the charm though, you know you are getting authentic, really real pho. Philadelphia had a huge population of Vietnamese and it was there that I became obsessed with pho. It's the perfect meal for a cold day or after a night of too much drinking. The pho at Niagara seafood is very authentic. Served traditionally with herbs, sprouts and some jalepenos to kick of the spice. The flavor is fantastic, definitely the best in town. I highly recommend trying it. I have also had a few other things. The fries rice is good. The chicken curry I would skip, a lot of bones and just not the greatest flavor- I'd go other places for this. Those are the only other thjngs I've tried, it's hard not to order pho here, it's just so good. The owners are also very nice. I happened to stop by one day when they must have been celebrating a holiday. They had a whole performance going on with dancing and a dragon. I was one of the lucky members of the Yelp International Supper Club that descended upon this cute market/restaurant on the Westside. This place had been on my lengthy "to try" list for ages, so when it was the chosen destination for our monthly meetup I was quite excited! Being first to arrive I spoke a bit with the staff and they were fretting and preparing many extra tables for our group. They were incredibly friendly and accommodating. While I was waiting for the rest of our group to arrive I looked around at the goods in the market. Lots of seafood, fresh and frozen, interesting candies and frozen treats (taro popsicles!) and food only labeled in languages I can't read! I'm not very familiar with Vietnamese food, I have limited pho experience and that's about it. The photo menu helped me choose something, but also made it difficult since there's so much to choose from! I ordered a #7, grilled pork meatball with vermicelli. I also got a special, a spicy mango salad with shrimp. I also could not resist a taro bubble tea. Even with our large group service was pretty quick, but after comparing my meal to the photo I think they might have mixed up my 7 with a 6. It was fine because the dishes were similar and it was tasty! They have all the necessary condiments on the table (fish sauce, hoisin, hot sauce & chili paste) and I felt man enough to dab some hot sauce on there. The mango salad we ordered was tasty and definitely had some unexpected spice. I shared some spring rolls with another diner and enjoyed them. Very fresh tasting. The bubble tea was very sweet but delightful. My fiance tagged along and ordered the catfish fry, which was a pretty standard fish fry. He enjoyed it either way! I enjoyed my meal here but the company might have been the highlight to this meal. I regularly dine in a party of two so it's nice once in a while to have a large group... I get to try more dishes that way! I'm thankful for the Supper Club to introduce me to another great spot to try something new! read more

My Order: Bun Bo Hue (yum), translation- Spicy Beef Noodles (wasn't spicy though). Though I haven't reviewed Niagara Seafood in the past, I have visited the location a few times. Since last year, they have had an interesting face lift for the better. Pros + MENU: definitely more consumer-friendly. In the past when I brought Caucasian friends, they were quite perplexed and didn't know how to order- now, they have grouped similar items together with plenty of pictures that make order easier. + INTERIOR: when I arrived in the evening, they dimmed the lights of the fridges on the right side. That definitely added a more enjoyable ambiance. They also have two doors in the front which limits the amount of cold air that travels in when new customers arrive (win). + POPULARITY: despite not making reservations, this restaurant was hopping on a Friday night. They were almost at capacity. (It was a lot quieter the previous times I had visited). Cons - PRICE: for the price point, it is a little overpriced for Vietnamese food. Back in Toronto, we'd easily walk out with 2/3 of the bill we got here (still not unreasonable- $25 for 2 people for dinner). - PORTIONS: The bowl sizes are odd, it jumps from S...to L. Unfortunately, the portion sizes are smaller here too. I typically would struggle to finish a small but I had to order a large (which realistically is a medium) to feel full. - CULTURE SHOCK: Not sure if this was due to culture shock or poor food preparation but my friend got food poisoning/stomach issues from eating here. Vietnamese food, in my experience, is inexpensive comfort food. Given that Buffalo may not have the ethnic variety of Toronto, I can understand their ability to offer small portions and higher price points. Whenever I do have that pho-craving though, I'll be sure to drive just up the street to this lovely joint. read more

The food is delicious and the portions are very substantial. Plan to take home leftovers! We like this place, for dine in or delivery via Skip the Dishes, because the menu is huge and we've liked literally everything we've ever ordered. Our last delivery was Pad Thai (chicken for my husband, tofu for me)--delicious and perfectly seasoned at a 3 (on their 1-5 spiciness scale). My husband had the pork fried dumplings, and I had veggie spring rolls. Both delicious and still piping hot when delivered.
