This place was alright. I got an order of their pho special. I was sick so I wanted to just go in, order, Pay, and wait the little wait time. They weren't really busy. I had to wait to finish ordering and paying because the cashier wanted to conversate with another customer instead of just multi tasking and getting my order in while talking to the other customer. Great tasting & local! Pleasantly surprised by the egg rolls and pho. Quality taste, fresh and great service. Even though there was only one server at the time we went (Thursday early evening), he made sure we were all set and checked in on us the duration of our meal. This place had great food! I ordered chicken fried rice, egg rolls, and shrimp pho. The people were friendly and the food was great. I did pick up and ran quite a bit late and the food was still piping hot when we got back to our hotel. (They told me it would take 15-20 mins for the order to be ready.) I really liked that they separated the broth from every thing else that goes into the shrimp pho, along with the additional things that one might want to add to the soup. Also, they add lettus, fish sause and mint to their egg rolls!! I highly suggest this place! It looks like a hole in the wall type of place but it's good food and service! read more

My wife was in one of her moods, playful yet serious. We were driving to a new restaurant that I wanted to try in Escondido. It was a new place that replaced a Thai market. We didn't have high expectations. It was dark around 7:30 pm when we pulled out of my parking slip at our condo in my truck. I can't drive because of the stroke that happened in February. So I get chauffeured everywhere. But that's neither here nor there. Just an "is" of my life at the moment. And we were headed to Lee's Pho, a noodle house on Valley View Parkway next to Joann's fabrics My wife didn't want to try it but I convinced her to give a whirl. She is picky with new places. She always gets the same thing when we go to places. She prefer the Vietnamese restaurant on Mission and Center City Parkway, Pho Truc Xanh. She always gets the Bun Bo Hue, a red spicy Noodle soup that always satisfy's. We arrived at the location and was immediately surprise by the décor of the place. The Thai Market that it replaced was a closed in place with very little lighting. It was dark and scary looking place that didn't do well. Lee's was open and airy two glass windows looked out into the parking lot an several customers where inside the restaurant. The booths with gray yet classy and not of the 70's gray, as were most of the tables. We were seated right away. The menu was standard run of the mill Vietnamese fair. Eggroll, choi cun, pho, and bun dishes there was something that caught my eye at the back though banh xeo, a Vietnamese crape, filled with meat, bean sprouts and shrimp. Its rare to have this one the menu. And since this was a new place I ordered the eggrolls. I always order eggrolls to test if I like a place. The service was quick and speedy, the eggroll came out first. It was served with fresh lettuce and mint leaves and two separate personal dipping sauces, one for me and one for my wife. It was hot so I took a moment for them to cool. My wife mentioned something about the republican debates that was on tv the other night and how she preferred one candidate over another. I was shocked to hear her mention a certain candidate and I told her so. She took it in stride but she did try to defend her selection. I wasn't so charming I blew on a hot eggroll and tried it with the dipping sauce, or nuc cham as you call in Vietnamese. Its was mediocre wasn't the best I had or the worse the nuc cham was lacking the sourness that I come to like with mixing lime juice with fish sauce and sugar. My food came out first a half moon of yellow goodness. Banh xeo is made with tapioca floor and turmeric gives it the distinctive color. It was filled with fresh bean sprouts, pork, and shrimp. My wife's bowl of pho cam out soon afterwards. Pho is made with pork bones slowly braised with star anies and sugar. Other spices are added too. My wife picked out a lemony flavor so they used lemon grass as a base for the both. I tried it and sure enough it was lemony. Not normally used in pho, but lemon grass is intriguing. It wasn't bland that's for sure. The worst thing in pho you can get is bland broth. A good traditional Pho broth is stewed for long hours using beef bones. More modern recipes are quicker, stewing for maybe an hour or two. The longer techniques allow the marrow in the bones to seep into the broth which means a more robust and sweeter broth. I believe Lees uses the quicker method that involves double boiling the bones. While you do lose more flavors it is a more consistent recipe. I dove into my banh xeo eating it as a filling in lettuce hand roll which the server brought me. I would tear a piece off with my hand and then tear a piece off the banh xeo and pile it on top of the lettuce and roll that into a cylinder. Then dip that into the nuc cham. Before to long I was out of lettuce having eaten it all so I asked for more lettuce. We finished out meal and came to consider all the other points of the restaurant. The service was fine though my wife found the serving girl to abrupt but I told her she was fine. The décor was fine with open space and open windows facing outward, grey booths and tables and chairs. All in all we would go to this place again but my wife preferred to go to Pho Truc Xanh were they had her pork blood soup. read more

I am quite particular when it comes to my soups and sandwiches. This is a place where all standards are met. To begin, the bahn mi is heaven. The sandwich has tender and well dressed pork that softly rests with the perfectly cut veggies. The price would say McDonald's quality, but the product is indeed worth much more than the menu shows (this will bite me in the butt later when they read this and increase the price, but it's simply the truth). The Thai Tea is wonderful. Though the caffeine content throws me off balance, it is indeed in perfect balance with all other ingredients. With this newly found winter weather, you may need to stay strong and dip your spoon into the best pho in Escondido, if not the entire county. I am indeed, quite particular, but this establishment has far surpassed all expectations. Not only am I particular, but I am also broke, and though my tastebuds may not be aware of this budget, this restaurant need not worry, as their prices accommodate all budgets. I am looking forward to the day I go back here. See it and taste it for yourself. You won't regret it. read more

Surprised how good the food was for an out-of-the-way little place. I had curry chicken which had lot of chicken (3 big drumsticks) and good flavor for $8.50. I was happy with the meal. My wife got a small pho fot $7.50 and said it was as good as any she had eaten in Escondido. So we will be back! read more

Wow these reviews are a little misleading. Tried this place for the first time and it was basic at best. Nothing stood out about the pho... it was more of a "ya the pho, I guess" type taste. Ordered a Thai tea as a perfect pairing to the pho but it was really watered down. Not to mention this place is a little moor pricy than other pho places. Giving them a 3 star based only on the great service provided by the gentleman who was working. Might have to give this place another shot sometime but not my first choice read more

one of my favorite go-to spots for pho! i especially like that it's the most local to me here in north county, as everything that is relatively exceptional as far as quality is either in mira mesa or convoy and the other pho locations here in escondido, san marcos, and oceanside have been largely underwhelming. don't let the location fool you, there's a lot of promise to what Pho Lee has to offer: it's nice that the staff are all great and friendly, there's so many meals and specials to choose from (not just pho), and all at a great value. i've been told that their broth is cooked over a period of 4 days, and definitely not one to just use the powder mix as some other places i've frequented have been guilty of doing - and it shows. -civilities. read more
