We have started coming here more frequently on the weekends after discovering our son is a fan of the kids meal here. It is very conveniently located off the freeway close to playgrounds for 4S Ranch, Carmel Mountain, and Poway. The kids meal has either chicken or well done beef noodle soup or steamed rice or vermicelli with grilled chicken or pork. We tend to go with the well done beef noodle soup and I order a grilled pork rice plate, and share my rice with him afterwards. He likes to eat the meat, then the noodles and rice, and sip the soup. Grilled pork is quite tasty. Service doesn't take long and workers are attentive and clean quickly when a table finishes eating. Their remodel also has made everything look more modern and bigger. I've ate here plenty of times throughout the past 15 something years. It's always been good. I've also ordered takeout from them before. Recently, like a few days ago, my friend graciously picked up food for me here since my fam and I have been sick with the cold/flu. Naturally, pho is a must when sick. However, IDK if it's a new cook in the back but the soup was bland af. Not normal. The eggrolls were made so thin and the dipping sauce bad no flavor. Service is quick. They are very attentive. Parking can be hectic at certain times, but we usually go at dinner when most of the businesses are closed, so parking isn't an issue. I've seen this plaza when it's pretty busy for lunchtime. Everyone, but me usually gets some version of pho. I like the rice dishes. I have tried the grilled pork and grilled chicken. I always get Thai tea. They have plenty of room for seating, so that's good. But again this busy so there are times you would have to wait. Came here on a Saturday with a party of 5. We were seated right away and our order was taken quickly. I ordered the P4 Pho with a side of bo vien (meatballs) and a Thai tea. Everything tasted good, pretty much what you would expect. My only complaint is the service. They brought out our main dishes but kept forgetting the sides. We had to ask multiple times for them to bring out the bo vien and our drinks, even though there were workers just standing around. We also could overhear some of the staff bad mouthing some of the customers in Vietnamese. Not professional at all, regardless if not everyone understands. Came to Pho Hoàng Express with a group of 8 for a low-key birthday celebration. I ordered the grilled shrimp and beef with vermicelli noodles--not pho--and the food was actually quite good. Well-seasoned, nice portion, and fresh enough that I'd consider coming back just for that dish. Unfortunately, the overall experience felt off. Not long after we sat down, the staff made it clear they were closing soon and we needed to "wrap it up" -- even though we were well within the posted hours. Being rushed through a birthday meal with friends doesn't exactly set the right tone. The decor was pretty meh, and to be honest, the place had an occasional funky smell floating around -- maybe fish sauce? Not totally off-putting, but definitely noticeable. After 10 years, this place still hits the spot for me. We came here for early dinner, restaurant was not crowded - which I love. Our servers were attentive. We came here with my MIL who's in a wheelchair, and when we got past the door, our server was halfway pulling one chair out of a table and directed us to sit at that table with a space for my MIL's wheelchair. He was so observant and attentive - thank you so much for helping! We ordered the fried calamari, a pho (tripe & rare beef) and a shrimp paste in tofu skin bun. Pho came first cos it was ready soup poured over ingredients. I loved the soup, so tasty. After eating half of the noodles, my husband then discovered there were more ingredients at the bottom! Now with more beef and tripe, he took noodles from my MIL's bun to add to his oh-so-generous-pho. The shrimp paste in tufo skin was really light! I have never seen this before but because it is so good, I'm going to order this next time. The skin was so crispy and thin, the shrimp paste was not heavily flavored which is great because, seafood should be left unadulterated. My calamari came last because it had to be fried. The batter was very light, the calamari was fried in hot, hot oil but for very short time making the best type of calamari. I have to hand it to my mother, the Rancho Bernardo resident that she is. She knows her hood. When she asked me if I wanted spring rolls when I was coming up for a recent visit I instantly went into "Brad Yelp mode" and started with the suggestions. She shut me down and said, "I've got this, you stupid loser." Well, only kidding about the stupid loser part but she did indeed "got this." First of all, I was extremely appalled by the service and the rude behavior of the person at the front desk. It was a short stocky man that took our order. We will never forget this experience. We will never go back to this restaurant. We have lived in Rancho Bernardo over 34 years and have never experienced this type of service at any of our local restaurants. The food is OK. Our middle son loves this place. Our youngest wanted to get used to Pho but has sensory issues. The person in the front gave us a mean look and then look at the clock with a face why these people are coming in. We noticed and asked for their closing time. Been awhile since my last visit. Even longer since the last time I dined here with either of my kids. My eldest picked pho for lunch on her birthday so of course I was more than happy to oblige after picking up from school on a minimum day. Here's what we ordered: A2 - Spring Rolls: the rice paper was sticking together, which is a clear indication that these were not made to order, which is ideal and preferred. Again, being understaffed plays a part in not being able to make this item to order and ensure freshness. P12 - Pho Tai Gau, large: Good. Hot. I remember the bowl being larger. I also remember my stomach being smaller. And I also understand that ingredients cost more right too. K1 - Kids Pho, well done beef: my daughter enjoyed, except for a bit of fat on one piece of meat so it must have been good overall. She could have used scissors; though it was so busy I was unable to get them for N3 - Vietnamese pressed Coffee with condensed milk: normally she his gets served up front with any appetizers ordered, but for some reason it literally came last. Unsure if they simply forgot about it until the end or what, but I would have been happier if they just forgot altogether so I could have it removed from the bill instead of having to wait for French press coffee to finish slowly dripping. A bit of a wait to be greeted and get a table upon arriving, which is unusual. They were a bit understaffed, which affected the usual prompt turnaround on the usual dining experience. Overall, the visit was solid. Most of the food was freshly prepared and most importantly the dishes tasted good. So anytime I see bun Bo hue on the menu I always order it. I have yet to find one that I've been amazed! So I'm on the lookout! I got it to go and it looks like it had potential. There was tons of meat, the color seemed right, the smell was amazing. The flavor was there and I definitely had potential but it was not spicy at all! And I understand that some places don't make it spicy but if you make a spicy beef soup with no spice it's just beef soup. Maybe it was just this batch but I feel like they should have added extra chili on the side just in case. It was a lot cheaper than a lot of places I went to. It had ALMOST all the ingredients in the bun Bo hue. I am definitely going to give this place another try just to see if it was just a one off. We stopped here while driving by for a quick dinner. We were seated immediately with water. Our order was taken in about 2 minutes and food was out in 5. The Pho was wonderful, full of flavor. There was just the right amount of rare steak in my soup. The Egg Rolls were hot and crisp when they were delivered, a good amount of veggies accompanied the Egg Roll. The service was great. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Overall from the time we sat down to the time we paid we were there just over half an hour. My son said this is his new favorite Pho restaurant. I'm a bit sad to write this review, since this has been our go-to pho place for the past few years. The food is solid and tastes great, but today when I went in to pick up my order I saw 3 cockroaches crawling along the floor.... Including one that somehow dropped from the ceiling landing on the seat next to me where I was sitting waiting for my food. There really isn't that many great Asian restaurants in the RB area. That's why Pho Hoang is a treasure. My parents have been coming to this place for years. After moving back to San Diego from LA, it's becoming one of my go-to pho place. We've tried almost everything on their menu, from their pho, to their beef stew, to the dry vermicelli, to their rice dishes. All are fantastic. Their pho broth is rich, but not overbearing. Full of flavor, yet at the same time "light". The dry vermicelli with veggies is also one of my favorites to order. It's refreshing but filling. I also love the rice dishes. Everything is just simply delicious. They are generous with their portions. I've never tried their drinks and desserts but I always see people ordering them. I am glad Pho Hoang is in my area.
