This great little restaurant is worth seeking out. Tucked away in a small strip mall in north Bellingham, you won't be be disappointed. Plenty of parking. It appears to have a dedicated clientelle, especially for to go orders. The owner personally greeted customers and was very gracious. Many customers were in turn friendly and chatty with the staff. I visited for the first time yesterday. The restaurant is clean and perhaps a little spartan. It's not five star fine dining or a themed chain eatery, but the decor doesn't matter once you try the food. The seafood noodle soup was excellent as were the fresh spring rolls. Meh... it's ok... Pho Ly is a mom and pop shop that has been around for a bit of time, the restaurant is showing its age in wear and tear from hard use. They always seem too busy for the number of people working there but somehow you still get your food without a ridiculously long wait. I'm not in love with the food and after 3 tries it just doesn't make a spot on the return to frequently list. Heres why: Food is bland. Fried rice. Fresh rolls. Everything we tried was just missing the flavor profile to be called really good. It is just ok. The pho broth for example is bland yet also somehow dirtier than I like. I dont think the broth is skimmed or filtered well enough and has a lot of broth scum. Fresh rolls don't taste too fresh. Like the shrimp was left out warm for too long and put back in the fridge to be used the next day. Vietnamese ice coffee tasted like instant coffee concentrate. If you put it in a corpse's veins it would reanimate it, but not very pleasurable to consume by mouth. And the restaurant is always unkempt. Tables are sticky or dirty, sauce bottles drippy, sometimes the utensils aren't the cleanest... just doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies about the kitchen. We even tried going early, mid, and late to see the ebb and flow of prep/service. It always had that same level of we don't have enough time to clean... People eat here and think its fine. I stopped in here for a late lunch my first day in Bellingham. After a long day of 3 flights from Dulles to get to Bellingham - I figured a steaming bowl of Pho Ga would rejuvenate me. I ordered a large Pho Ga and a glass of water. I was brought a glass of water, plus a small metal tea kettle and cup. The tea kettle looked like it needed a serious sand blasting - it looked as if it were beyond cleaning. When the soup came out it was hot and steaming away, and the plate of aromatics was in good shape: Jalapeños, lime wedge, Basil, and Bean sprouts. The chicken was way overcooked though. And their Pho Ga is not made with chicken broth. It was a beef broth. I prefer places that make a delicious, flavorful chicken broth for their Pho Ga. Sadly, Pho Ly is not one of these places. I ate the whole bowl though - as I was hungry. I added all of the aromatics, and quite a bit of Sriracha sauce to the broth. The restaurant was a bit on the dirty side. Service was good. Best Pho in Bellingham! Upon walking in I was a little skeptical from the disorganized environment. But, don't let that turn you away! Once seated I saw how busy the restaurant gets and how hardworking the couple that own the place are. It shows in the food. I have tried 90% of all the pho places in town and where I am not a pho expert, I can say Pho Ly is my personal favorite. The brisket is my favorite meal when it's rainy and cold outside. So much flavor in the north, tender brisket, and the staff is so friendly! I see people complaining about the environment inside.... the "hole in the wall" places have proven to be the most authentic. So, if you are looking for romantic date night with white table clothes and candles, sure this isn't your place. The food is SO yummy and that isn't even the best part. By our second visit the owner called both my husband and I by name. I thought "wow he remembers us from last time." Me and the hubs have been regulars at Pho Ly since, well, pretty much the dawn of time. Or, whenever they opened (whichever came first). This place is great, no-frills, deliciousness. And it's definitely the best pho in Bellingham. The service is friendly, too. The owner treats us like we're family (even when we haven't been in for awhile), and he's always happy to throw in a few extra interesting meats. Yes, they have tendon, tripe, and other traditional delicacies just for the asking (you just won't necessarily find them on the menu). Oh, and the egg rolls are no slouch, either. read more

When I lived in Bellingham this was one of my favorite pho spots. I still stop by for a hot bowl of Pho on my visits North. I'm giving it three stars because, quite frankly, there are better Pho spots out there. Even in Bellingham there are better places. But this place is cheap, and not bad. It's also freaklish fast. Maybe this isn't fair cause I didn't have the Pho, BUT I've had better noodles and stir fried vegetables at the mall, any mall. My friend got some barbecued unidentified meat with white rice and salad , (she ate some, and still didn't know if it was beef or pork) and I tried to cover the tasteless fried rice noodles and kinda spoiled tasting shrimp with chili sauce to get through it, but sadly couldn't choke it down. Didn't take it home, just left it. Everyone says this is "best pho in town" but for myself, I'll keep looking, I'm not sure this is it. read more

It was ok! Got a large veggie and it was pretty basic nothing to write home about but Pho takeout isn't always as yummy as dine in! I think like many businesses they are struggling a bit due to COVID so I was happy to support considering the hard times. No indoor seating yet and chairs stacked up. Tuesday found the Pho Kings on a business trip up to Bellingham which meant we also had the chance to grab a bite to eat in a pho shop that was new to us. Pho Ly is located in a strip mall like many of the pho shops we visit. We were early, showing up at about quarter to noon and the place was already about half full of people including a few local Vietnamese folks. It would be full by the time we left about forty minutes later. An older gentleman came out to give us our menus and then take our orders. We got water and then shortly thereafter a solid and healthy looking plate of the usual condiments. One of these days I'd like to see something different on those condiment plates. While I'm sure there are some similarities to a bowl of soup in Vietnam, I'm also sure that there must be differences too. The menu at Pho Ly was just a bit different than the usual. The soups were laid out as complete soups without the usual combinations of meat. I'm sure we could have ordered any of the soups on the menu and then specified a different set of meat but that's not how they were on the menu. Instead there were about nine soups, from a beef soup to a combinations soup, from a hot and spicy beef soup to a vegetarian soup, a wonton soup, a chicken noodle soup and a seafood noodle soup. I must admit, it was nice to see such a nice set of options for pho soup. I stuck with the hot and spicy beef soup while others selected vegetarian and combination. As is standard in a pho shop, our soups were delivered to us within about five minutes. They were all steaming hot with mine showing hot pepper sauce floating on top. Upon taking a sip the soup was as hot and spicy as it looked as were the bowls. There is nothing worse than luke-warm pho soup. Fortunately we were in luck. I heaped up my generous condiment plate on top of my bowl and then put only a small amount of sriracha and hoisin sauce into mine as I could tell I'd not need anything more to spice things up. I even left the jalapenos behind on my plate. The beef broth was rich without being too greasy - certainly not the best broth I've had in Seattle but among the top set of pho shops without a doubt. The noodles were a bit different than what we normally see with there being quite a lot of size variations to the noodles. They tasted the same they were just more numerous and many were thicker than other places. I soon realized that while the spicy hotness of the soup was nice, it was also not terribly unique. I too could have put a dollop of chili sauce on my soup and called it "hot and spicy." Working my way through the soup I began to hunt for pieced of meat. By the looks of things I'd only gotten a portion of the thinly sliced steak with very little brisket. There was a decent amount of meat overall but I'd have to say it was on the smaller side as compared to other places. Soon I was reaching the end of the bowl, my mouth was hot, but not too hot and my stomach was full. Overall a very good bowl of pho. We may have to return to Pho Ly on a future trip to Bellingham though that all depends on if we can find any other new pho shops. Growing up in California, homegrown Pho is apart of our weekly ritual. In Bellingham, it's no secret that we lack the diversity that one would expect to find when it comes to good Pho. I've heard that this place is as close as it gets, and walking in gave me all the nostalgia feels. Family owned and operated, the service was good... attentive & quick. All you could ask for in a spot, right? The prices are reasonable, which is always a plus! Some other places In town offer the same quality but for definitely a bigger price tag. The ambience is what you'd expect from a hole the wall place, so be prepared for that. But overall clean, bright, and it's really about the food at a spot like this right? The broth was rich, flavorful, and tasted exactly as it should! I got a small, and It filled me up but a large is much bigger with not that big of a jump price wise. I always love supporting local families, and small businesses and so my belly and heart was full here. The gentleman running the place was extra lovely, btw.
