Hard to find, behind a gas station in a strip mall on a corner with lots of shopping areas. Very hole in the wall small type place, would only want to get to go, unless you brought a fun group with you. My friends had the Pho and liked it. I tried the fried rice and it was just ok. First time here today, we had the #1 and #3 combo. Both were excellent, broth was rich and meat was nice and tender almost melted in your mouth. Coffee was hand poured and made in house unlike other pho restaurants. Service was quick, hospitality was great. Found this place when Pho45 was closed due to remodeling. Pho Mai is a mom and pops type place and this review is based solely on their Pho as I've only been here two times and have only had the #2 sliced beef, well done brisket. Both times was great. The broth was good and portions were plentiful and best of all, the price was right. At just under $10 after tax for a large order and is excellent, this place is a truly hidden gem. I had a beef chop suey. Charged me $14 plus a $1 credit card fee. The food is not as much as they charged. The main issue is not the price and quantity of food. After I had the food, I started having a terrible stomach ache. I had to run to the bathroom multiple times (5-6 times) during the night. Won't go there again. read more

There was good review about this place and I had to try this place. This place looks like mom and pop restaurant. Inside is not clean at all compare to other pho places. Price of the pho is average and taste decent. I can't really give high grade since there are so many other pho places that tasted lot better. The reason for my 1 star review is because when I was 1/5 through with my bowl, I noticed small tiny bug in middle of the soup. From that point, I totally lost my appetite. I told the owner about the bug and he offered me to make a new pho but thinking about the bug, I felt like vomiting and refused to get new one.. Instead owner gave me a credit for my pho. I've probably passed this place hundreds of times over the years, but had no idea that it even existed. After a long yoga session with Jeni C. and Nica H., we headed over for some healthy type food and for some reason, pho just sounded like it would hit the spot. From the outside, this place doesn't look like much. It's on the corner of Telegraph and Carmenita in a weird little strip mall. If you blink twice, you might miss it- especially since there are a ton of other restaurants in this growing little retail area. I went for the medium bowl (it only comes in medium or large) with rare steak. Though it was the smaller portion, it was packed with some delicious broth and a ton of noodles. I added in my hoison sauce, sriracha, jalepenos and a few bean sprouts of additional texture. They weren't skimpy with the meat and for $6.95, I thought it was a great bargain for the amount of food that you got. The place closes at 9PM, however, there were people entering at 8:58 and the owners gladly sat them. It was a pretty steady flow of people the entire time we were there. Maybe it was a soup day for everyone, or it's really that good. My dinner companions ordered the spring rolls with pork and shrimp and they were delicious. They were big and thick (get your mind out of the gutter) and they were packed with meat, noodles and mint. It came in an order of two and one of them was splitting down the middle a little bit because it was so packed. I can honestly say, I loved what I had of them. Nica ordered the shaken beef. It was very tender, moist and had a lot of flavor. For the price, it came out in a heaping pile accompanied by rice. Though I loved the soup, I'm determined to try some of the other menu items offered as well. The place is really small inside and ran by what I think is a husband and wife team. This place is really a sought after restaurant. We came about 7p, and the restaurant was crowded, with people waiting outside in the cold, waiting to be seating. This place must be worth it! Luckily when we arrived, a party was leaving so we were able to grab a table right away. What grabbed my attention were the hand sanitizer dispensers located on the walls. Hmm, that's a good look. I'm a visual person, especially when it come to eating at unfamiliar restaurants with unfamiliar foods, so I appreciated the fact that there are pictures of foods on the menu. Now I understand that I am in a Vietnamese restaurant, but I truly appreciated the fact that the waiter spoke very clear/standard English. Sometimes it can make ordering difficult, when I can't interpret what the waitress/waiter is saying. Ok on to the food. I ordered pho and egg rolls. I've had pho 3 times and this pho was the best yet. They weren't skimpy on the noodles, let one place I went to. It was just the right amount of noodles worth the right amount of broth. Now that I am becoming familiar with what the broth should taste like and what's considered good tasting broth, I have to say that this was some darn good broth. I've been here before but it's been at least 3-4 years. As I remembered, it is generally busy during lunch so plan for a 5-20 minute wait. We waited approx. 10 min for a seat but they took our order and we got our food quickly. Including travel time, we made it back to work just before our lunch hour was over. Don't let the ambiance fool you, this is a prime example of a hole in the wall comfort food joint! Yes, the decor is out dated and the signs have sun bleach spots, but I like to think that that is because they invest their time and money into making awesome food! When we went in to try the place out, I was really craving phô. I haven't really had any good phô since I moved from San Diego. This place definitely hit the spot. I got the #3 Phô Tai (fresh slice beef noodle soup). The broth was so flavorful and didn't need much doctoring up. The side veggies were fresh and crispy. The meat was perfectly cut and melted in my mouth. The bowl is humungous and is only $6.75. I never finish my soup... Come hungry. My mom really wanted to try their chow mein so we got the #41 Mi Xoa Don Do Bien (seafood chow mein crispy). There was way more toppings than noodles, which was awesome! The seafood was cooked perfectly but don't expect scallops or lobster. I think that's obvious but who knows what you, my fellow yelper, is thinking is in an Asian seafood variety. There was shrimp, sliced fish balls, sliced fish cake, and imitation crab. There was also veggies that were cooked really good too including bok choy and broccoli. The noodles were too greasy for us but we're picky with our Asian noodles. I would order it again to eat all the toppings. I always try and get spring rolls anywhere I go and when I asked for them I was told to try the #103 Goi Cuon (shrimp and pork roll with lettuce, mint, and carrot) served with peanut sauce. It was pretty good!!! I would want more mint to make it pop a little more but I could see how some people might not like that. I really like their spring rolls. Get it as an appetizer. Do it! Our whole meal was $20 some dollars and included 2 drinks, 2 huge bowls of phô, a huge plate of chow mein that was packed with seafood and veggies, and spring rolls. Are you kidding me?!?! That's an awesome deal. We definitely took home a lot of left overs. We will definitely be back to try it again and will be recommending this place to friends and family. read more

Update: been back several times and each time better than the last. Service has improved. Food is still kick butt good. Get extra meat in your pho. It's worth it. Must add 1 star . OMG - best pho I think I've ever tasted. Listen, my mom and just about my entire side of that family live in Little Saigon - so I've had my fair share of pho and let me say, most flavorful broth I've tasted. I got the #3 When you add sriracha and hoison sauce - MY OH MY! It is a mom & pop place, and it's small, so the service isn't the greatest. The pho definitely makes up for it, though. I also had the shrimp & pork spring rolls - while good, it was a little bland. Thank goodness for that peanut sauce. The prices cannot be beat for the portions. I've been here before for their traditional Chinese dishes, and they are tasty too. Love the local-ness to this Vietnamese restaurant! +1 points for that! When you want some pretty tasty Vietnamese food, kick it at 'Pho Mai'. Authentic and flavorful without hurting your thin wallet! :) Their pho is just like any pho place. Includes the meat: cooked, not-cooked beef flank meat, beef balls, rice noodles and the small dish with the bean sprouts, lime and basil leaves. Their dried rice noodle dishes are also good, with freshly grilled ingredients and good flavor. Tried the shrimp roll. They use so many rice paper skins to make them, so different than what I'm used to. A watered down peanut sauce comes with it. Staff's nice and they're courteous people. I eat here at least once a week during my lunch break. For me, any type of soup noodle dish is determined by the noodles (texture) and the soup broth (taste). If these 2 elements work in a harmonious balance together, you are going to have an excellent meal. This place is no exception to this concept. What makes the pho so excellent is 1. the rice noodles are thin and soft 2. the both has a very tasty, slightly salty meaty taste. Came in at lunch. The place was packed so I waited a bit outside for an open table. The place only has 10 tables and a total of 30 seats so it can easily fill up. Service was slow. Took awhile before they even noticed I was waiting for a table. I grabbed my own menu after being seated to a table waiting to be cleaned. I ordered the large combination pho and egg roll. I was informed 10 mins later that they were busy and out of egg rolls. Ok that's fine (saved myself $6). You might be wondering how I knew the number of tables and seats. Well I counted as I had plenty time waiting on my order. It's ok I wasn't in a hurry. In the meantime I also notice the only waitress had trouble with getting the right orders to the correct person at the correct table....there was a big language barrier. I finally got my food and was disappointed. I could tell by the first sip of the broth. Nowhere near my fav Pho place. Also didn't have meatballs like my favorite place too. I've only had Pho twice in my life, and it was at both of these locations, so I am no expert, but based on taste alone, Pho Mai is better. I came here with my sister, and if you're not paying attention to your streets, you'll miss it. It's a very small restaurant, almost hole in the wall, but they are VERY CLEAN. They even have hand sanitizer at the entrance! They have a lot to choose from on their menu, they even serve bibimbap (but we stuck to their signature stuff.) My sis ordered the #3 (pho noodle soup with beef brisket, sliced beef) while I had #4 or #5 (pho with sliced beef), and a side of pork/shrimp rolls. The broth in the pho had a much better flavor, as did the pork/shrimp rolls! The owners of the restaurant were very sweet with us, and will do whatever you want done with your food (I say that because a lady came in with overly specific requests on her food, and they did the changes happily.) Came here on a Saturday during my lunch break. Service was standard for this mom&pop shop. I ordered the bun with egg rolls and grilled pork. Sadly, it turned out to be more like a salad with an overwhelming misproportion of veggies to noodles. The egg roll was also more fried than I liked as it had a burnt oil taste to it. Okay....this place is a little hole one the wall. I always saw it when we would go next door to eat Mexican. We went here and noticed right off he bat how small it was. Now I understand why it seemed so busy....fills up fast and you have to wait outside. The people who worked there are so very nice. The food came out promptly and hot. I ordered the meatball pho.
