My go to spot to stock up on my Asian sauces and ingredients. I was super hungry and didn't realize there was a small pho place in the corner. It was kinda busy that day and I was able to snag a seat, but it seemed like there's always one lady that works there and she takes your order when you seat yourself so it took some time. I ordered the rare beef and brisket pho which came out fairly quick. The flavors were on point, tasted authentic and my only complaint was that I wish I had more broth because the ratio was a little off between noodles to broth. First time at No 1 had to get the No 1 (P1). By the way this place is inside the H&L Supermarket. My sister wanted one too so I got a P1 and P2. I've had pho before but never like this! My order took about 9 minutes and I took it to go. There was seating at the supermarket but I was bringing some home for my sis who was sick. The meat is rare and wrapped to stay fresh. There is a menu there but I didn't pay much attention - I was kinda wiped so just rolled the dice. Also, included was some type of squid. Quite tasty. I always add the sprouts and jalepeno and mint. What a hidden gem! We came in for groceries and left with a full belly. Good authentic Vietnamese food. Sad they don't offer Pho Ga but the spring rolls were HUGE!! Fresh ingredients are a must and they nailed it! Hard to find good peanut sauce too- not sure why- but theirs is delish! We did the pork and egg fried rice too. Excellent value- you get enough to feed three people. The grocery store is CLEAN and well stocked. We will for sure be back. Check out the HUGE thrift store next door while you're there. Always find something when I go. I've been coming here for years now. I make a point to come maybe twice a year just because its so far from me. The flavor in everything they cook is always phenomenal. I've never had a bad review towards their food. I am doing another review today because our last two visits have been...different. By different I mean the attitude of the young lady who takes the orders and brings the food out. I feel that each time, the service has progressed poorly unfortunately. I understand everyone has bad days and I understand it might not be personally directed towards us. I just hope that new customers understand that also and not hold her bad days against her. This place was great for a quick meal. Don't go there expecting it to be good for a first date; it's located in the former deli of an Asian grocery store. You seat yourself but they do come and take your order. I ordered the pho with rare beef slices. It was very similar to most pho of the same style that I've had elsewhere. It came with the common plate of cilantro, bean sprouts, jalapeño slices and another sort of leaves. Sodas are single serve in a can with a glass and ice. Considering the constraints they're under due to Covid-19 (take-out only), I was impressed. None of the drinks (Thai iced tea, in example) are currently being made or sold due to this, but the full food menu appears to be the same as normal. The food is simple, home-style, Viet cuisine and seems very authentic in flavor and extremely reasonable in price. I had a beef and spring roll over noodle (bun) combination plate and my friend, who is Chinese, had a similar plate and springs rolls and he felt also it was very authentic. The marinate of the beef in my dish was very tasty and for a small restaurant within an Asian grocery market, it's a deal at these prices for such good-quality food. Authentic Pho in an Asian grocery store! What more could you want? You would probably miss it if you weren't looking for it-- in the front corner of H&L Asian Market. They have an assortment of Vietnamese dishes but their main focus is the pho/soups. They come in big bowls with spoons for the awesome broth and an assortment of fresh greens to throw in (cilantro, bean sprouts, mint, peppers). I looove pho. Love it!!! But this place fell short. Not only in the pho department, but the service! My friend and I came here for lunch, and the waitress said sit anywhere. She brought one menu which we had to share. Sure, it was busy, but everyone else was eating...not taking up the menus. Anyways, we ordered and received our food in a reasonable time. The egg rolls were on point. I'd come back and just eat those. The pho was decent. It wasn't too bad and the broth was pretty good. When the waitress passed us the sixth time after we finished eating (couldn't catch her), she finally stopped and asked if I needed a to-go container. She then brought a check with one piece of candy on it. I was confused. There's two of us, why one piece of candy? Either give enough for the table or nothing at all. Having traveled to Vietnam and recently moved to Charleston, from a city where you could find authentic Vietnamese pretty much anywhere, I found it hard to find the real deal here. Many places give you beef broth or chicken broth and add cilantro, and slap the name "pho" on it. I can tell you that this place is pretty much on point and is one of only 2 places in Charleston where I will order pho from and actually get "pho" the way it's supposed to be prepared and taste. This restaurant is located inside H&L, which is the largest Asian super market in Charleston. It's located to the right of the store by the freezer section. It's very small with only 6 or 7 booths and a few round tables so they get busy during lunch and dinner, especially since there is only one server. The restaurant is very bare and is meant to be a quick sit down restaurant. They do take out orders and offer whole or half ducks for purchase. The Food: For their appetizers, I've tried their Vietnamese egg roll as well as their Vietnamese Spring Roll. I love their Spring Roll more because it comes with peanut sauce and it's not deep fried. For entrees, I've tried their P1 which is essentially their house pho that comes with everything, M1 which is roast duck with egg noodles, and their M2 which is wontons, pork, and shrimp with egg noodles. The best one is their house pho P1 because it comes with everything including beef slides, brisklet, tendon, tripe, and meatballs and is only an extra dollar from the other pho bowls. They gave you a decent portion of meat and noodles, but it's nowhere as much as you would get from a pho restaurant in a big city. It also comes out with a small plate of peppers, cilantro, and bean sprouts if you choose to add those into the soup. Their M2 is good if you're really hungry because it comes out with the most noodles. I would skip ordering the M1 because their roast duck here isn't good at all. The prices for the food here is the cheapest when compared to CO or Phuong. As other people have mentioned, the service here is pretty bad. But for me, I think this is typical for small Chinese run restaurants so my exceptions weren't very high to begin with. Do not expect to be waited on hand and foot or to even be greeted by your server. The servers will not do anything extra unless you ask for it directly. However, they are efficient with their job when it comes to taking your order and bringing the food and check out. Overall, this place is okay for what it is, a quick sit down restaurant in an Asian super market. If you're looking for a nice fancy lunch, look elsewhere. This place is good if you're hungry for some cheap Vietnamese food and coincidentally have some Asian food shopping to do. read more

On Decmber 3, 2018 at approximately 1339 hours Tom H. and I, Dante G., responded to Phô Number 1 located at 5300 Rivers Avenue, which is in the jurisdiction of the city of North Charleston, in reference to a prawn smuggling. Upon arrival, we parked in the spacious lot and entered the business through the doors located on the A side of the business. We turned right and made our way to the restaurant where we greeted by an unknown Asian female. She quickly sat us, despite the high volume of customers. We had already looked at the menu and knew what we wanted. We sat and the unknown female quickly took our order. Tom H. went with the M2, I chose the A2. However, when ordering I mistakenly said "A4". We sat and watched out the window towards Rivers Avenue. I half expected excitement being this deep into the Low County's equivalent to Bloody Hue. After a short wait, I received two plates, one with many bean sprouts, sliced jalepenos, and unknown leaves. I also received another plate with unknown dumplings and rolls. There was a dipping sauce. I have no idea what I ate. The sprouts had an unexpected kick, due to the jalepenos. The dumplings and rolls were amazing. The dipping sauce had a sweet heat to it, very delicious. I ordered "P1" which was the pho w/ beef tenderloin, tripe, and meatballs and fried egg rolls. Everything was delicious and nothing was too spicy for my spice-wimp-self. I would have liked a little more thai basil. It was/is super cold in the seating area of the restaurant, so definitely bring a coat! Coworkers enjoyed the roasted duck pho (but didn't really love the fact that there were bones in the duck still), the wonton soup, and the seafood pho. Even though we had 25 minutes before close they refused to seat us. Likely will not be returning. UPDATE: Came here a second time for Pho and the selection was okay, however... there were 4 of us in the party, we all ordered food and the server only brought us out three entrees. When we questioned them, they argued with us. To wit my response was: "Why would 4 people walk in, 4 separate people give numbers (the server wanted us to exclusively use numbers instead of the dish name), but only have three final entrees?" It's just... don't argue! If we said you missed something, you probably missed something! We never wanted anything for free, but what we did come in with the expectation of a belly filled with what we wanted to eat, not just the leftovers of what those around us didn't eat. Bleh. If this place was a cake, it would be dry with crappy icing. Still edible and sugary (pluses) but leaving much to be desired. My friend and I went for lunch and the hostess/waitress was pretty rude and not welcoming. We ordered the pho with beef and meatballs, and an order of spring rolls. Being the well-mannered gals we are, we ate them on a napkin, which ended up sticking to the roll.....it would have made a good Seinfeld scene. The pho was alright, but I've had better in other places around town. The "meatballs" were really more like large ends of sausages and the texture of the beef could be compared to soaked paper. The waitress did not bring us any toppings (herbs, sprouts, jalapeno, etc), so we had to get up and ask for them. I mean, it's a restaurant in a grocery store, so my expectations were not through the roof...but places like that can be real gems sometimes! Alas, not in this scenario. This is a review of the duck egg noodle soup. I have been here several times, but cannot bring myself to order anything else. Also a Christmas lunch tradition for us. Nestled in the corner of H&L Asian supermarket (well worth a trip on its own), it is not a very appealing space - kind of like a small cafeteria. But that noodle bowl is fantastic. You get quarter of a duck chopped in pieces with a cleaver and everything thrown in bowl. So eating can be bit messy since will need to pick up some pieces if you want to get at all of the meat (or unless can really really handle chopsticks). Broth is light and well developed. I like it as is, although my wife will add some hoisin. Comes with side of fresh beansprouts, cilantro, thai basil and jalapeno. They also sell whole roasted ducks for i think around $24. They also have other egg noodle bowls and various pho dishes (rice noodle bowls). Also rice dishes and few appetizers. read more

The broth is good, but a bit on the salty side. I'd prefer the beef flavor to be the focus, not the salt. The noodles are thin kind of like angel hair pasta. Just a tad thicker. Beef slices were fine, but the meatballs were rubbery. :/ This place will do in a pinch, but with Phuong 1-2 minutes down the road (Phuong is a 5 star in my book) I doubt I'll be back here again. read more
