The rainbow drink has the perfect amount of sweetness from the coconut and the different textures of the Jellies is like a party in my mouth. The sandwich was delicious and spicy! 8/24/20 Came here to pick up lunch. I ordered 1) bbq chicken banh mi, 2) bbq pork banh mi and 3) summer rolls (comes with 2 rolls). First off, the bread for the banh mi isn't like the type from Bale. Pho Old Saigon's uses baguette type of bread. The pork banh mi was nice and crisp, although I felt there was less filling due to the size of the bread. I tried the summer roll and it was similar to other summer rolls from other restaurants. The peanut dipping sauce was good. I don't know what the chicken banh mi tasted like, but I think my daughter liked it. I would recommend this place, but you may want to order multiple items. To be honest, I'm not a big eater and 3/4 of my banh mi did not fill me up. read more

A new family-run pho restaurant in town that has been open for less than three months, Pho Old Saigon! Actually, it was formerly on Kuhio St. in Waikiki in a small strip mall before moving to its current location on Kapahulu Ave. No, I hadn't tried it when it was in Waikiki, but after reading Yelper Rod U.'s review, I was eager to go. He must have read my mind, as after having sat down for some 15 minutes for lunch, Rod walks in with his mom! Our first visit there was impressive! The basic Vietnamese dishes we ordered were authentic, presented well, and delicious! Can't wait to return to try other dishes. No wonder Rod was there again! For our first visit we had: * Pho with rare steak + beef tripe + beef tendon. This one-size pho was very flavorful, savory, and full of body. Generous amount of tripe, if you're a tripe lover. Very fresh veggies. This pho had thin slices of round onion, chopped Chinese parsley, bean sprouts, jalapeno slices, lemon wedge, basil leaves, and a rice paddy herb. The broth, though, could have been a bit more temperature hot. * BBQ pork banh mi. I loved this banh mi baguette! The restaurant bakes its bread in-house, and it's excellent - freshly crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside. Their banh mi differs from other Vietnamese restaurants in that it's 12" long and narrow inside of the usual short and wide. The grilled BBQ pork and the sliced veggies (cucumber, pickled daikon, carrots, Chinese parsley, jalapeno) with house-made mayo made this sandwich very flavorful. Being long and narrow, it was easy to eat, as a serrated knife came with it to slice it easily for both of us to share. (Their 24" baguettes, baked fresh daily, can be purchased for $3 to take home). * Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk. So refreshing and robust! * Fruit-infused water. What an added touch to be served water in a glass carafe so that we could refill our own water glasses! The water was nicely presented with a slice of apple, lime, and mint leaves in it. We were one of the first ones there for lunch when the 30-seat restaurant opened at 11am. The apparent owner/server was very friendly, accommodating, and always smiling even as it got busy, with more people coming in. Great vibes, and no complaints here. Pho Old Saigon's menu is extensive: appetizers (rolls, fried calamari, stuffed chicken wings); salads; soups; phos of various combinations; sautéed dishes with mixed veggies; curry dishes (comes with rice); fried rice; home specialties (pounded shrimp, BBQ pork, catfish, pork ribs); fried noodles; cold vermicelli bowls (with chopped mint leaves, bean sprouts, shredded lettuce, cucumber, toasted peanuts, fried onion flakes, chopped Chinese parsley; and broken rice plates (with sliced cucumbers, tomato, lettuce, soup). All come with your choice of meat. There is also a long list of beverages: coffee, juices, 13 different kinds of smoothies, and soft drinks. Desserts are also offered: caramel flan, banana tapioca, sweet beans, coconut milk delights. The laminated menu is entirely in English with colorful pictures of its dishes; it is so easy to read with not having to read through Vietnamese wording. Each table has a bottle of Sriracha hot sauce and hoi sin sauce with plastic chopsticks, soup spoons, and condiment dishes. Square porcelain bowls are provided on request if you wish to share the pho. Credit cards are accepted. Two tvs are in the restaurant, one on each side, with one airing the Travel Show. There are a few free parking stalls in the back of the building; however, there is only one entrance in the front. Work in Kapahulu so decided to come here after work for lunch. I did a takeout order. Got the Bahn Mi sandwich with pot roast pork which what I had in mind was different from what it actually was. It was thin slices of meat with like a rubbery (fat) outer rim of the meat which I didn't like. It still tasted good overall so I think I just won't order that sandwich again. Anyway I was also surprised at the bread. French bread but it was thin and pretty long. Usually most Vietnamese places give a thick bread that's very wide. This one at least I could fit my mouth around it to bite. It was super crispy which I really like. All the filling and the pickled veges and the cilantro was a nice ratio. It also has a few slices of hot green pepper which was nice. I aloe ordered their banana tapioca and to my surprise it was hot. Usually I've gotten tapioca that was cold. I enjoyed it warm! It was not overly sweet an d had some peanuts which was different. It had some pieces of whole banana which gave is what gave it most of the sweetness. Will have to come to try the pho and other dishes! Parking is in the back but you have to go to the front of the building on the other side to enter which I think is a little humbug maybe for the disabled and elderly. I came in one-night craving Vietnamese food. This is a brand new place on Kapahulu and has a good selection of noodles, sandwiches, and rice dishes. My girlfriend and I got a bowl of pho each, spring rolls, and a banh mi. The spring rolls were crispy and had a great filling! The banh mi was a decent size, bread was fresh and crunchy, meat was flavorful, and veggies complimented well. Pho was good and had nice robust flavors of spices. I feel like it was missing some sweetness. Otherwise, it was a good bowl of pho. This place is pretty new and so service had some hiccups. They got our order wrong with the number of spring rolls, brought us the other table's food by mistake, and was confused most of the night. We were in the mood for Vietnamese food and wanted to try some place different and new. Pop open the Yelp app and Pho Old Saigon showed up with 5 stars. Other reviews said they had just opened so we decided to give it a go. Had to try the essentials: Fried Chicken Wings, Pho and Banh Mi. Fried chicken wings was ono with heavy fish sauce. Seemed like there were more than 6 pieces (sorry, we were hungry so no pics except for the menu). The only drawback was there wasn't peanuts. Pho was super yummy. We ordered the Spicy Beef noodle which wasn't that spicy; but I have a low tolerance. Staff asked if we wanted it spicy so you can custom order it. Note: the broth is what made this dish!! Banh Mi was really good. I would like more of the daikon and more cilantro so I'll be asking for extra next time. Staff: Super DUPER NICE!! Ask for the color menu which has the Banh Mi menu. This is my new favorite Vietnamese place in Honolulu. It's a mom-and-pop restaurant that is super clean with a modern interior nice enough to bring friends for a casual meal. And, of course, the food is super fresh, with well-balanced flavors of salty and sweet. I have had a number of items on the menu--and I recommend them all. The papaya salad with beef has a seasoning different than your normal Thai papaya salad; it's somehow more savory and less tart. The pho broth has just the right amount of acid and the bahn mi features fresh French bread baked in house. The platter #78 though is my favorite and features a generous portion of DIY spring roll pork wraps, full of fresh vegetables to your likening. Have you ever watched "Always Be My Maybe" on Netflix (one of my favorite movies ever!) with Ali Wong and Randall Park? At the end of the movie, Ali's character opens up a new restaurant with food recipes that reminds her of "home." Well, that's the best way to describe Pho Old Saigon for me! All of their dishes look DELICIOUS and INCREDIBLE. It definitely reminded me of my mom's cooking, which I love most. With that being said, I hardly went out to a Vietnamese restaurant in my entire life because I felt it couldn't beat the taste of my mom's cooking. When I first ate at Pho Old Saigon last year before the pandemic happened, my entire family went to try it out and we all LOVED it. They make their baguette bread FRESH in-house. Just the smell of ripping the bread apart smells so sweet and amazinggggg. Half a baguette is only $2.50 and I want to say it's probably a foot long! I can't imagine how long a full baguette is, but I can definitely say that ALL of the food comes out super duper hot and fresh, so eat with caution! You can't go wrong with crispy spring rolls, so I got the full 6-pieces order for $13.50 as an appetizer. My absolute favorite dish is their beef stew with baguette for also $13.50. It tastes exactly how my mom would make and it was spicy enough to make my nose run haha. Definitely good for when you're feeling under the weather :) the beef stew comes with carrots, onions, and pot-roasted beef. It was a good portion where I had to order another side of the baguette to dip the rest of the stew. The beef had a good amount of fat too. My boyfriend got the special combination pho (rare steak, beef brisket, tendon, flank, tripe, and beef balls) for $13.95. Without adding any sriracha or hoisin sauce, the pho broth tasted really good! It might be our favorite pho place to go. We ended our meal with my favorite Vietnamese dessert: cendol with coconut milk! It's sweet coconut milk with pandan cendol (droplets of green rice flour jelly) for $5.50. Surprisingly, it came in a really big cup with beans on the bottom as well. Parking was a little difficult to find. Since we went on a Sunday, I believe street metered parking was free and we got lucky circling a second time and found a spot. We went around 6:30pm and did not wait at all. They seem to be busier through BiteSquad, and the next-door restaurant had people crowding outside. Honestly, I can't say this enough. You have to try Pho Old Saigon! The interior is beautiful and the restaurant is clean. The only minor issue I had but thought was a little funny was our server did not really talk much at all. He's like a cute uncle minding his own business while also serving us what we wanted/needed. If EXCEPTIONAL service is a really big thing to you, then this may not be your place, but the food should definitely make up for it. read more

I've decided to write a second review here. Another 5 stars. Huge fan of any Asian salad-- but they must have the right texture. So many Asian salads here are too soft and the only crunch coming from wontons. Pho Old Saigon creates a real Vietnamese chicken salad like I've had back in Vietnam! It has the crunchy onions, the crunchy peanuts, the shaved cabbage, the poached and shredded chicken, and all the delish fresh mint and Vietnamese coriander needed to add herbaceous brightness to each bite. I would LOVE to find a banana blossom salad somewhere on Oahu, this is probably the closest we'll get unless you have any ideas. Perhaps they'll make it here one day! Convenient as it's a block away from home. Offers a mix of Vietnamese and somewhat (I think) Chinese food. We've had the pho. Good broth...light and tasty. My favorite is the won ton soup, especially with their chili sauce. Decent amount, like 9, good-sized pork won tons with cilantro...I love the herbiness! Just be sure to get only the won ton soup because if you order the one with the noodles, you only get like 3 won tons. And tho hubby and I should be watching our caloric intake, we can't help but order one of their dessert drinks from their wall of about 15 pics. Our goal is to try them all. But, knowing me and how I stick to things I love, we might just stay with the three-bean or black jelly drinks. My main gripe with this restaurant is the service. Run by a family, I think, but with no one that really speaks English. So, don't try asking about the menu or substituting items. Even following up with an order can be frustrating. Case in point, ordered a cup of pho broth, but when it didn't come with the rest of our food, we asked about it. And what we got after trying to explain for two minutes was an empty bowl. We live in Waikiki & vowed to eventually experience all of the Kapahulu Ave eating places. This was our first time to eat at Pho Old Saigon. What a great find! The restaurant is very clean & they have the cleanest restroom ever. Bun with BBQ pork with springrolls was the best that I've ever eaten here in Honolulu. The salad ingredients were top quality, fresh & plentiful. The peanuts tasted like they were freshly roasted & the pork was very well seasoned, thin & grilled perfectly. The springrolls were cut in bite size pieces, good filling & perfectly fried crisp. Husband's beef pho was delicious, generous veggie condiments, broth was good. Spicy beef dish was more veggies (onion, celery, green peppers) than beef, but flavor was great. They have an attractive, brightly lit photo board with all kinds of Vietnamese cold drinks, some look like fancy dessert drinks. The ratings are overrated but it comes down to different levels of expectations and different experience with Vietnamese food. I'm Vietnamese from Bay Area CA, so trust when I have high expectations of Vietnamese food. This place is expensive because of the location. This is closest walking distance from our hotel since on our last day we didn't have a car. We got #76 spring roll platter $22.95. This was pretty decent but very small portion. I'd say it's a 3/5 for taste and value. We also got the banh mi #26 special combo $10.95. Wanted the bbq pork with pate but they can't substitute the meat and $2 extra for pate to add to bbq pork sandwich. This is the WORSE banh mi I've ever had. The meat is loaded but BLAND! Barely any spread and the pate was so thin you can't even taste it. The bread was so HARD I had to flatten the sandwich to be able to eat it. Not only was the outside hard but so was the inside of the bread. More like a stuffed crouton. Maybe it's a bad batch and that would be understandable but own up to it and try to make it right but nope not how it went down. If you've ever eaten banh mi in Vietnam and San Jose, CA you better know this is crap. Sandwich is 1/5. We asked them to remake our sandwich because the bread was too hard not crispy! They tried to tell us it's like that, or it's crispy not hard. How did they know? They take a bite of my sandwich? Seems like maybe old bread or they toasted it too long. We concluded and thought they would refund us the sandwich since we only took a few bites and didn't want to wait for the remake. When we got our check they charged it for it then we had to go over the issue with them again. They were not very sincere in this whole situation. Poor customer service and it's about the principal!
