I wanted to try this place with my wife, as she loves Vietnamese food, and this place was pretty close to us. We had tried a couple other Vietnamese restaurants in the area, and thought that this one would be similar to them. The atmosphere inside is more stylish and the ambiance is more upscale than a traditional Vietnamese restaurant in the area. But, inside is not spacious enough compared to the number of tables; so all the guests have to sit very close to each other. The server was friendly and did his job okay. The overall service was slow, and I believe it wasn't his fault. The portions were okay, but the amount of meat they added in our entrees was very disappointing. The other Vietnamese restaurants in the area deliver better food than this one. It was still acceptable to me until I pay my bill. I used a coupon, but I noticed they charged me more than what they were supposed to charge. So, I don't think I will visit this place again. read more

My wife and I had a rare lunch without our son, so we headed to Pho So 1, or usual joint. Only problem is that they are closed on Tues. Luckily I remembered reading about Pho Saigon on Yelp. This is a small, unassuming place. We stood at the hostess station for almost 15 minutes, and we're only acknowledged once. There were also tables available. Since my wife is 9 months pregnant, prompt service would have been welcome. They seemed short handed. The ambiance is really nice though. This was a very minor problem, because the food is that good! We started with spring rolls. The crispy spring rolls were great. Wrapping was crisp and light, not greasy. The mix of veg and pork inside had texture and was flavorful on its own. The fish sauce was well balanced, not salty. I love that they have hoisin and sriracha on the table. Mix that together and you have something special! I thought Pho So 1 was good pho. Pho Saigon was pho elevated to a different place, both in flavor and the quality of the ingredients. The beef was clean, no connective tissue still attached. The herbs were fresh and vibrant. The noodles had bite to them. The broth had the most amazing depth of flavor. The only thing I would change is that the beef was mixed in. I prefer to see it on top, raw. This insures that it stays tender. Regardless, this wasn't just a bowl of soup. This was an experience for the senses. Our server was attentive and fast. Hmmm ... I'm not sure why so many people love the food here. My family was not overly pleased with the food here. The quantity was small and the flavor was the same. I've had lots of Pho in various places with high vietnamese population, and there are a few things in this pho that stand out: beef flavor is less, too much onion flavor, and too sweet. Now, this is a personal preference thing, but those items are the wrong way for my palette. The Bo Kho was also more on the sweet side which is less preferable to me. But, in any case, even if the person did prefer a sweeter taste, the quantity was very small. The amount of noodles smaller than I'm used to, and the amount of meat leave a lot to be desired. The Bo Kho had a total of 4 chunks of meat, and 3 chunks of carrot. The Chicken Pho has ~5 shreds of chicken. The cost was farily high too, though that might be region based (VA is expensive). All in all, I would try somewhere else for vietnamese food next time. read more

I love me some pho. I've tried most all the restaurants in Richmond and usually eat at Huynh's when so moved. Recently I took a new job in Glen Allen so Huynh's is a bit of a hike. That was when I found Pho Saigon and fell in love. The pho here is phenomenal. It runs the gamut of typical pho tai to bun bo hue. They have various dishes from the various regions of Vietnam so their variety shines in that regard. An interesting take you don't see often is the oxtail based pho. Since pho is broth based I have to say they have the most floral and satisfying broths I've ever tasted. The cilantro available on the garnish plate is also a nice touch. They also serve various broken rice dishes, as well as vermicelli bowls. I'm a pho addict so I can't say as I've tried those dishes yet. Although I was a regular customer at another Vietnamese restaurant just down the street, I think I have been converted. The owners are very pleasant and helpful in recommending menu items that I have never tried. Some of the best Pho around. I've eaten here several times. I love the atmosphere, decor, and especially the food. The waitstaff are especially polite and knowledgeable of the menu. Having limited knowledge of Vietnamese food, this was very helpful. I've tried something different each visit and I've enjoyed them all! Last time I went in, I had #16 and it was amazing! I've come here with family and on dates, and it worked both times! I can strongly suggest it for both occasions. I think that the prices are very reasonable for the quality of food they have. Been here about 15 times. Really great pho the broth is the best! I love their lemongrass spicy pho a real treat and find myself craving it weekly! Its funny that i actually found out about this place when i was meeting some friends at capital ale house and saw the sign for pho saigon, you wouldnt know it was there unless you were going down that side road because its not directly facing broad st. So one day i decided to yelp it and saw that they have oxtail pho which isnt unheard of for making pho but isnt common, especially in richmond. Most likely because of the cost, causing the price to be slightly higher than you average bowl in this area. I ordered the oxtail pho to go and i am glad to say i was satisfied. The broth was aromatic and on the sweeter side it really had a home made taste, like my mom made it! Tried this place twice and I've come to the conclusion that the pho is yet only thing worth going for. Noodles were okay but not great. one thing you have to watch out for is the banh mi. it is 7 dollars plus tax for such a minuscule amount of food. I was visiting from Atlanta and saw this place on Yelp. The Pho was average and the Ban Mee was decent. I've had way better for half the price. The two of us had 2 ban mee and 1 pho to share with a bill of 33 bucks for lunch. The sandwiches were 10 bucks each. I would recommend this place if you are near it and you want this kind of food but I suspect there are way better Vietnamese if your willing to drive a bit. Chicken pho was very good. The drinks not so much. The ginger ale was watered down and the waitress never came and gave us refills. Knocked off one star due to that, however the pho was amazing as previously stated and the chicken was tender nothing was lacking. Best Pho in the West End and it's not even close. Great atmosphere if you dine in, limited but good tap list, friendly service and they even deliver. Now, the star of the show, the pho. Rich flavorful umami driven broth that's not too sweet. Pho Dac Biet, Pho Tai Chin, are all stand outs. If you can handle some pig knuckle, the Bun Bo Hue is an absolute standout. My experience with Pho Saigon today was not so pleasant as usual. I ordered the "com thit noung". The beef was a little raw, with pinkish coating all around the meat slice. The meat sauce was a but too sweet, maybe a little on the sour side. The tables give off a foul odor as I devoured my lunch. The service was okay, my waiter dior occasionally ask me how I was doing. At the same time he greeted me at the door, I was wondering where the manager of the place was. I noticed two men sitting at the bar, whom did not even spend a second to greet me as the guest. With all the restaurant turnover at this location, I wasn't sure what to expect. A friend went there and recommended the beef fried rice, so I decided to try the place. It was very good. I've been there twice now and had the Pho (p2) with brisket both times. It didn't have as much meat in it as Pho 79 off Staples Mill rd. in Richmond, but it was delicious and filling. Wow. From out of town and decided to try this place based on the reviews. Exceeded my expectations. I had the spring rolls, calamari and oxtail pho. Everything was extremely fresh, veggies very crisp and abundant. Loved the peanut and fish(?) sauce that came with the spring rolls and calamari. The draught beer selection includes a Kentucky feel to it, with its Kentucky Bourbon Ale. The decor is purely Vietnamese with its Asian Conical Hat and Wok light fixtures dimly lighting the place. Oh my god. I live in NYC and I'm used to amazing Vietnamese food. THIS TOPS EVERYTHING. You must try the Bot Chien. It's unreal. The taro is pan fried and super tender and flavorful. The grilled onions on top had me licking the plate for any leftover pieces. A must have! The Cha Cuon was also solid. The sauces are great. If you are in Richmond, you have to make it here. This is probably the best pho place on town. Have been here twice and it is consistently good. A little on the pricey side all the way around though. $5 for bubble tea $13 for papaya salad...and $10 for bowl of pho. The papaya salad chicken was fresh but the salad seemed like it was missing tomatoes and lime. Oxtail soup was awesome! I've eaten a lot of vietnamese and I think this is one of the best pho I've ever had. Their vermicelli dishes are great as well. The facility feels more upscale than most vietnamese places, almost a little too nice as it feels a bit 'fake' but I'm nitpicking as it was clean and nice. That said the food certainly isn't fake and is outstanding across the board! Everything we tried was just great! The vermicelli bowls are really tasty but a little shy on goodies for $11-12. The pho was really amazing but at $11-12 a bowl it's quite a bit higher than pho tay do which sells a large for $7 and is equally good. I imagine the cost factors are due to the nicer facility and the higher rent area in general but i wouldn't call it a rip off as the food is legitimately great and worth a few extra bucks if you're in the neighborhood. The service was friendly and attentive while not being intrusive. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, a decent place bordering on romantic.... Well worth a try! read more
