My friend and I met for lunch at 1. We left at 4:45. It was so awesome that they were so accommodating and didn't try to hurry us out of our table. We walked in and weren't sure if we sat ourselves or not. A server came out and showed us to a table with menus after a minute. It did take a little while for her to come back and take our order. We each ordered an XL bowl of phở ($18). I got the flank steak (tái) and she got the vegetarian (chay). The phở was delicious! The ratio of meat to noodles was appropriate. The add-ins (beansprouts, basil, lime and jalapeño slices) were the perfect amount for 2 bowls. We didn't eat the jalapeños, but we didn't leave anything else on the plate. I hate wasting food. I read that the service here is what is lacking. Our server came by twice to check on us, but didn't refill our glasses until I asked. She was the only one working the floor while we were there. It was busy enough that the noise level was high at times and then it lulled to just us talking. She didn't clear away our bowls and wasn't super attentive, but we didn't mind because we were catching up. As we were getting ready to leave, another worker came in, but the no one came out in the front for at least 10 minutes. I am a pho connoisseur, and this place is fine. Definitely hits the spot of pho, but I feel like play it safe with their broth. It lacks real depth flavor, but at the end of the day it's just preference on how it's cooked. Plus you could always just modify it by adding different condiments but me personally I don't like to alter the art too much ! Also I came with my friends and he got ripped off, he got a small bowl size that was like 2$ less than a large and they were not kidding about it being a small size. My first impression was that they could stand to update the very worn and cracked upholstery, but that doesn't affect the food, so I figured I'd try it. My second was that they need more people. I was craving some takeout pho and noticed Pho Tasty was just a couple of blocks from my hotel in downtown Davis. So I headed on over and grabbed a bowl of noodly goodness (plus some eggrolls). I headed up to the counter, where the service wasn't exactly friendly (but not necessarily unfriendly), ordered my food, and it was miraculously set before me just a few minutes later. Super fast service - yay! So I walked the three blocks back to my hotel, got into my jammies, and sat down to watch some TV and eat my dinner. Imagine my SHOCK that there was not a single utensil or napkin included! Not even some chopsticks. Faced with having to eat my pho using the coffee stir stick from my in-room Keurig machine, I put a jacket on over my PJs and headed down to the hotel bar, where the server blessed me with some utensils and napkins. I enjoyed the pho itself, and loved how much tendon was included (usually it seems like an ingredient that other pho places are stingy with). The eggrolls were delicious, too. An old friend from elementary school and I decided to meet at Pho Tasty for lunch as neither of us had been there before. Reading the reviews on Yelp and looking at the pictures, it appeared to me that the only pho options had a beef broth. On looking at the menu I discovered that there were also pho dishes with chicken and vegetarian broth. It was a very warm day so both of us decided to try the Banh Mi. She had the BBQ pork and I had the chicken. Both were served with regular French fries, not the sweet potato fries mentioned on the menu. The sandwich was fine. The French fries got soggy very quickly. We arrived when they opened for the day at 11 a.m. Actually we arrived early and were relieved that the door was open so we could get out of the heat. BEST PHO IN YOLO COUNTY!!!!! I've been coming here for years and I've never been disappointed with the food or service even when it's busy. The broth is so rich I don't even add any extra sauces. The noodles are chewy like they're fresh, the meat is always perfectly tender. I've had pho where the meat is tough as jerky but you'll never experience that here. I moved away for a bit, but every time I came to visit I made sure to stop by here for a dinner because it is seriously that amazing. As a Davis native, I have seen the revolving door of restaurants coming in and out of this location at 3rd and G street. I don't remember trying many of the previous restaurants, but hope Pho Tasty is here to stay. My party got the Bun Rieu and two bowls of the vermicelli noodles, one with Chicken and one with filet mignon. Everyone loved their entrees, which were super flavorful and reasonably priced. I got the chicken vermicelli noodle bowl, and loved that they had condiments in addition to the sweet and tangy sauce to season the bowl (chili chunch, jalapenos in vinegar). My go to to place when I'm missing home locally. It a right on g street right across from temple coffee. I Love everything they have from the pho dishes, rice, vermicelli, and appetizers. I've pretty much have eaten through there whole menu. I'm a sucker for the clay pots with rice. But the rolls a delicious as well. On cold days I Love ordering the pho soup with filet mignon beef & flank it always hits the spot and just fills us up right. Appetizers Love the bao, crab Rangoon and egg roll for that category. Mediocre pho and food. I was disappointed by this place after seeing good reviews on Yelp. The food is on the pricier side, $10 for a SMALL pho and $12 for a banh mi. You get what you get on the outskirts of the Bay Area though. I noticed in my pho the rice noodles were in a large clump and hard to separate. The texture was especially off putting- slimey and mushy. The noodles were over cooked or weren't rinsed properly. It seemed like that the meat and tripe was also skimped on. The broth was bland and I had to load it with some hoisin sauce and sriracha. My boyfriend got the banh mi and it came with a minuscule amount of fries? Lol. That's the first time we've seen French fries being served with banh mi. The banh mi was decent but not as heavily loaded as other places. The spring rolls were pretty good and were larger than I expected. We felt rushed while eating here, maybe around 20 minutes in eating, a server went by to drop off our bill at the table rather than us asking for it. Service is a bit slow and unorganized and that is the only reason why this place isn't at or above 5 starts. They are friendly and helpful just long waits and unorganized. Anyways - the pho!! Best pho this side of the Mississippi! You can add lemon and jalapeños and basil etc etc, but it needs NOTHING! Perfection in a bowl! The noodles are the perfect consistency and do not get mushy as you continue to eat. The meat is prime cuts and perfectly cooked as well. Can't say enough about the food - just amazing! I loved the pork meatballs in it. The soup hit the spot for the bright sunny day. . Beef pho - according to my friend it was good. It was a little salty. Can't go wrong with a classic beef pho. . Bun xieo - Crispy egg pancake. The size was big and lots of veggies came with it. If your craving some salad or refresh dish or a dish to share, this is the one. Best pho spot I've tried in Davis! I wish this was here when I lived here. All dishes are not classic Vietnamese dishes some are other Asian type dishes. I ordered the specialty pho and duck baos. Both were tasty. The pho (large) I finished at the restaurant and the bao I took home to eat and they were still tasty the next day. *** Vegetarian Review *** The latest pho/bánh mì-house in Davis has a nice selection of vegetarian food and the service is super friendly. Comparison: Although nothing compares to the Huong Lan (South Sac) because their bánh mì has vegetarian meats like a veggie BBQ pork (YUM!), you don't have to drive across the Causeway to get a very tasty bánh mì in Downtown Davis. I haven't tried the pho just yet, but will update the review once that happens. Would I Come Back Test? Yes and often. At the time of this review, I've already enjoyed Pho Tasty 4 times. It is on the regular food rotation. Four tips for first timers: 1. Plenty of street parking. 2 hours free for the most part. After 6pm (I think), there is no time limit. 2. When ordering at all Vietnamese restaurants, make sure to ask for "no fish sauce." You don't have to worry about their tofu bánh mì, but I'm sure the other dishes have fish sauce if you want to keep it vegetarian friendly. 3. Call in advance if you want bánh mì. They only order enough for the day so if was a particularly busy lunch, they may not have enough bread for their dinner crowd. We learned that the hard way. 4. Two tvs - on all my visits, they have sports on. Tofu Bánh Mì ($7, Grade A): Vietnamese sandwich with all the usual suspects in the sandwich pool. Jalapeño, cilantro, pickled carrot, daikon, and house special sauce. The bread is fresh and unlike other bánh mì, they don't toast the bread. I prefer this because if you already got the "untoasted" part of this review, you know what I'm talking about. That toasted roll can wreak havoc on the upper mouth because it be so hard. The tofu is prepared fresh and the star of the show is that special house sauce. I can't get enough of it. Bonus --- $7 would be a decent price for the sandwich alone, but this is like a Vietnamese Meal Deal. It comes with sweet potato fries and a choice of soda or unsweetened iced tea. Sorry ... Thai Tea or Vietnamese Coffee cannot be substituted. We asked. Sweet Potato Fries - Grade A. They come out piping hot. 'Nough said. Bánh Xèo ($12, Grade B): Vietnamese crepe with onion and beansprouts. It usually comes with shrimp and pork, but can be easily prepared without those to make it vegetarian. We added tofu. This popular street snack is served with a side of lettuce, cilantro, assorted Vietnamese herbs, and house vinaigrette sauce on the side. Although it looks like an egg crepe, there is no egg. This savory fried pancake is made of rice flour, water, and turmeric powder. How does it taste? Well, best described by the prep. "Xèo" means sizzle which refers to the loud sound the rice batter makes when it is poured into the hot skillet. It's a little crunchy and a lot greasy. Since I didn't have a dipping sauce, I actually enjoyed cutting off a piece and putting it in my bánh mì to resemble a fried egg feel. Plus the bread helps combat the greasiness of the dish. Bottom line, if you didn't know, it tastes like a crepe thinly dipped in egg and then fried. The house sauce has fish sauce so unfortunately, the replacement is just a simple soy sauce and not like the vegetarian sauces Huong Lan or Pho Le Hoa (Vallejo/Vacaville, CA). I hope this eventually gets upgraded because soy sauce by itself really isn't a dipping sauce. Spring Roll ($7, Grade B): Rice paper wrapped with fresh vermicelli noodle, lettuce, Vietnamese coriander, mint, and cilantro. Served with a peanut sauce on the side. Presented nicely on the platter. They are on par with other spring rolls and I would order again with one exclusion. Vietnamese coriander really overtakes all other flavors here that even the peanut sauce couldn't battle it. Next time ... no Vietnamese coriander. Bottom Line: I have been back at least 4-5 times for the incredible $7 bánh mì meal deal. The restaurant staff are super friendly and they do their best to keep their guests separated for social distancing protocols.
