This place is probably one of the worse Vietnamese places I've eaten at. To start off, I asked for hot tea, it never came. Then the fish sauce lacked flavor. It was just salty fish sauce mixed with water and a little chili. No lime, sugar, or garlic. Then the spring rolls that came with vermicelli were horrible. They came straight from a frozen box you find in frozen section of an Asian market. The over all flavor of this place is terrible. The broth was good however nothing to rave about and they barely gave me any meat and they are skimpy on the garnishes that you add to the pho(they only gave me one slice of the lime and the bean sprouts were slimy and brown). I went to pho viet for lunch and ordered the beef pho with rare steak and extra beef balls. The service was pretty fast, and the portions are big. The beef balls were a little rubbery but still tasted good. I ate the raw jalapeños that came on the side and accidentally got some on my lips. I did not think I would survive, but somehow I soldiered on to finish my huge helping of pho. The interior of this place is casual if not a tiny bit divey. All of the toppings and the noodles were stuffed into a styrofoam container, the fresh spring rolls I got were a little tough to eat and the peanut sauce wasn't good. The broth was tasty but very greasy. I'm not sure what the typical serving size is but I only received 3 small pieces of the flank steak and I was under the impression that this soup came with the beef balls, but there were none. In terms of cleanliness, I'd give it a 3 out of 5, but the aesthetics and set up is fairly not much different than other Vietnamese restaurants I've been to. I got the spring rolls and the rare steak bowl known as number 11. It wasn't oily and the meat was tender; couldn't complain! Their menu is definitely broad with a variety of noodle and rice dishes to choose from. They also have a drink menu with a small selection of smoothies and boba tea. We actually ended up here because the other pho viet who advertised they opened at 10 wasn't! Ok let's get to the restuarant and food! Place is located in the Five Points area in Columbia. The sign for the restaurant due to cursive writing is a bit hard to read so you could miss it. This restaurant is street facing, with street parking. Place was pretty empty when we walked in but that's because we were the first customers! Host was nice, told us to sit v wherever we wanted. There is only 1 size bowl for pho! Don't freak out though if you're a pho lover like me. The bowl is a good size and the portion is great! They give you plenty of noodles and meat. The broth was good. It's on the lighter side but still good. We don't have any complaints. We also got the spring rolls. It was fresh and sauce was fine. Big place, nice people working there, 8 dollar a bowl, great portions; go try this place out if you're in Columbia and want some vietnamese food! Owners keep your prices and your portions! Ok, so I came back to this place as promised and once again, I was very satisfied! The same friend who took me here the last time met me here for lunch. This time, we both ordered the same thing: the sautéed beef and vegetables over yellow noodles. When the food came out in a timely fashion, it was steaming hot and the saucy aroma filled the air. I was ready to dig in! When I did, I noticed it had a lot of good flavor in it, but the only mishap was the beef. The texture of the beef was very dry and lean, so it almost crumbled as oppose to melted in your mouth. I know, as a cook myself, that this type of beef can be tricky to sautée, but as a paying customer who wants some good meat to my meal, I expect it to be cooked right. With that said, I will probably try a different protein next time around.
