Hall's Chophouse -- A Perfect Choice for Our 200th Restaurant! Our ROMEO group of 12 visited Hall's Chophouse for lunch today, and what a way to celebrate our 200th restaurant! Since 2015, our group--ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out)--has been working our way through restaurants in Columbia and the surrounding area. For #200, we wanted to go somewhere special. Why not Hall's? A couple of weeks ago, I called Hall's about bringing a party of 12. I was told that parties larger than six should coordinate directly with management. They responded quickly and assured me they would have a table ready for us. And they delivered. We were seated immediately, and several members of the staff quickly got us settled, took our drink orders, explained the day's specials, and answered all of our questions. About a third of our guys had been to Hall's previously with their wives, but this was our first ROMEO visit. I had already made up my mind to order either the burger with Truffle Parmesan Fries or the Shrimp Po' Boy. Then our waitress mentioned that the special of the day was a Cuban Sandwich. The way she described it sold me, and I immediately changed course. I went with the Cuban and the Truffle Parmesan Fries. Around the table we had four or five burgers, a Steak & Frites, several Prime Rib Sandwiches, and a Chicken Caesar Salad. There wasn't a bad-looking plate in the bunch. While we waited, Hall's brought out some excellent bread and butter for the table. Our waitress also noticed us trying to take a couple of pictures of the group and immediately offered to take our photo. She was a gem. She took several shots from different angles--including one from up at the bar. It reminded me of the old Alice's Restaurant song by Arlo Guthrie, where he talks about having "26 8x10 color glossy photographs." Fortunately, we didn't make her take quite that many. Then the food arrived. It's funny how there can be plenty of conversation going on around the table--until the food shows up. Then suddenly, 12 ROMEO guys become very quiet. Apparently, eating takes priority over conversation. And that brings me to the Cuban Sandwich. It was the best Cuban sandwich I have ever had. And I really like Cuban sandwiches. The pork was plentiful and incredibly tender--it practically melted in your mouth. The cheese and mustard were perfectly balanced, and the bread was pressed to that wonderful crispy, panini-like texture. Paired with the Truffle Parmesan Fries, it was an outstanding lunch. The comments around the table were overwhelmingly positive. The only minor complaint I heard was from two of the Prime Rib Sandwich guys, who thought theirs was a little salty. Apparently, it wasn't that salty, because both still gave their meals a 9.5/10. As always, each ROMEO member independently rates the restaurant. And Hall's did something no other restaurant has managed to do in our first 200 visits: Hall's Chophouse received the highest rating we've ever given a restaurant. Our group average was an incredible 9.71 out of 10. On the ROMEO scale, that's a Yelp 5.0 without hesitation. For our 200th restaurant, we couldn't have picked a better place. Halls Chophouse has all of the textbook service components that I look for in a high-end steak/seafood restaurant. They even had jazz musicians in the front lobby entryway. The restaurant location is across from the State House, so I'd anticipate that they get quite a diverse cross section of visitors at the restaurant. I could tell from the moment we arrived that the hostesses were professional and got us to a table that was comfortable and had a view of the dining room. We had originally intended to sit outside where the view is more interesting, but on this day the heat was just too much. Our server, Megan approached quickly and went over a presentation of meat types and preparation styles, and quickly got us some drinks. She was efficient and professional throughout the meal. I had a wonderful fillet with some sauteed spinach, and it was all quite tasty. With a price averaging about $90 per person all in, including soft drinks, tip and tax, it's a higher end restaurant for the area, but certainly a reasonable value overall. For those visiting from out of town as we were, you should definitely take the time to either walk across Gervais Street to visit the State House, or head in the opposite direction along main Street and visit the downtown area. Halls is a wonderful centerpiece and represents Columbia well. At the end of the meal, they asked for my address, at which point I sarcastically said to my wife quote what are they going to do, mail me a thank you card?" Our party of four was fairly satisfied with our brunch. Most everyone agreed that the food and especially the coffee could've benefited from a higher temperature. The problem with the coffee was the cream. It should probably be served around room temperature. Because the creamer was so cold several of our party had to ask for frequent warm-ups. Our server, Kristen, was very personable, pleasant and accommodating. A couple of us ordered Bellini's and mimosas. My Bellini was just OK. My standards are high, since I've had them in Venice, Italy. The Hall's Bellini was not very tasty and on the watery side. My wife tried to order the sweet potato pancakes, but they were out. So she was disappointed, and ended up with the lavender scented brioche French toast. She thought it was OK but was seeking a stronger flavor. I ordered the biscuits and sausage gravy. I don't order this very often, but there was a good portion of sausage and the flavor of the sausage was enjoyable without being too salty. Our daughter ordered crab cake Eggs Benedict which features a creole sauce. She enjoyed it, but the temperature of the dish could have been hotter. Our niece's daughter had the farmers omelette with the apple sage sausage. The apple-sage sausages were excellent (I got to sample one) and a very good deal. The ambience of Halls is always great. The service is usually quite good and the food is usually excellent. This is our second brunch at Halls and I'll have to say that our first brunch experience was a little bit better for the reasons noted above. I still rate it the best brunch in town. read more

We came here on Mother's Day (we were a party of five) and we were seated immediately as we had a reservation for an early dinner. We were greeted pretty quickly by our server, who did a steak presentation of the different cuts of steak, and then we placed our drink and appetizer orders. We got calamari as our appetizer, and we also got bread, which was complimentary. The calamari was good with what I believe was a sweet asian sauce drizzled on top. My husband and I split a Caesar salad; additionally, I got the scallops (which came with risotto) and my husband got the rack of lamb. My scallops were perfectly cooked, sweet, juicy, and nice and plump. The risotto was so disappointing; I didn't like it at all and only ate a few bites. My husband said his rack of lamb was fine, but nothing to write home about. We got some sides for the table, which included asparagus with hollandaise, collard greens, and the pepper jack creamed corn skillet - the creamed corn was bomb, it was so yummy and flavorful, the collard greens were also quite good, the asparagus on the other hand seemed to have no flavor. We ended the dinner with the bread pudding and I was unimpressed; my parents said usually it's much better, so perhaps it was an off day. Throughout our late lunch/early dinner there were gnats in the dining room we were in, which was super annoying. All in all, it was fine, but not great and certainly not worth the price. read more

We were in town for one day and booked a reservation at this restaurant at the recommendation of someone who lives nearby. It was a good experience. There are several different dining areas to choose from. Our original plan was to sit outside on the patio with a beautiful view of the state house. However, after walking outside for about a half hour we decided it was way too hot to sit outside so we switched our reservation to the main dining room. There are also tables available in the bar area. The ambiance in the dining room was very nice with good music playing as well. The menu offers appetizers, salads, soups, steaks, and a few seafood items. I opted for the scallops with vegetable risotto. It was a delicious dish. Although I have eaten at this gem before, this was my first Sunday brunch. There were several options, but my server recommended the French toast! Omg! Who created this heavenly masterpiece? Thick, Texas toast dipped in crushed-corn flakes making the perfect crunchy-soft melt in your mouth explosion. Also served with three strips of thick bacon. Y'all I have been thinking about this French toast all week. My server was the best. Meat was tough, chewy, with sections of cartilage or silver skin that their given knife needed multiple passes. Completely unacceptable for cut and price point. Comparable to cheapest cut of sirloin from the local supermarket. No elegance or special feeling, just feeling of multiple passes with the knife and chewing even though flavored appropriately and seared nicely. Had numerous experiences with A5, by far the worst. Felt like it was their left over trimmings, at best. Cannot help but feel it was a substitution with a lesser cut or cow. Seems like a decent place, so recommend sticking to basics without ordering anything from the their high end selections. Save it for a fine dining experience in another city. read more

About 3 years ago, we tried Halls Chophouse of Charleston and was undeniably impressed by the quality of the steaks, sides, and the service. Since we were in the Columbia area, we had to come back! Servers and managers are always standing around in the hallway practically waiting to help you, are there to start conversation and make you enjoy your experience. Our waitress constantly came around to check on us. Great work! In Charleston, we got the prime rib and loved it. So, as a result, we got the prime rib again AND loved it again! It was just like how we remembered it; tender and great flavor. Their sides come in large portions (shareable). They do have great mac-and-cheese. It kind of gives us like a Spanish vibe, probably because it consists of a certain spice or Jalapeños (my guess), but that does not make it spicy! All it does is adds complexity to the flavor. For dessert, we shared the cookie skillet. It comes with ice cream on top with chocolate syrup and caramel on the side. Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside.. that's how we like it!! I could not believe how bad this Halls location fumbled what was supposed to be a celebratory dinner between two people. The staff were shockingly rude and unprofessional, the atmosphere was tense and off putting, the food was very disappointing aside from the steak tartar, and they sent us home with someone else's leftovers after offering to box up the rest of our meal. I love Hall's! I went during brunch hours (the best time to go) and ordered all my favs: calamari , caesar salad and the corn skillet. The calamari is so good! Fried perfectly and the sweet chilli sauce on top is the perfect. It's also served with a green sauce (which this was first time having) and it was good as well!! Hall's has THEE best Caesar salad. The anchovies on top along with red peppers and a Parmesan crisp is so perfect! Lastly, the corn skillet ..I recommend sharing because it's big. Looking for a night out to a high end steak house? This place is it! I've been going here regularly for few years now and my review still hasn't changed; they are the best Columbia has to offer in terms of quality of food, service, and taste. I'd consider it almost fine dining compared to other steak restaurants I've been to. My favorite and highly recommendation is the 12 oz filet mignon. I've recommended it to multiple friends and family and they all provided feedback saying it's one of the softest, most tender steaks they've eaten. To complement the steak, the premium side options of the Brussel sprouts and lobster Mac & cheese is delicious. If you're not a filet fan, they have dozens of other cuts starting from your NY strip to a 20 oz tomahawk or even the A5 Japanese wagyu for a very steep price. The staff there have always been amazing. You walk in to be greeted warmly to each of the wait staff upholding a high level of professionalism. The restrooms are always kept cleaned and freshened. Listen, I know we aren't in a major city- but if you know anything about tasting "love" in the food and if you read the last 10 reviews... My partner enjoyed the petit filet (medium came out more like med VERY rare) and a massive lump of truffle butter- Certainly not worth the +$14 price. A huge ketel one dirty martini was $24... They were nice enough to present a tasty prosecco and delicious candied nut ice cream sundae as a complimentary birthday treat. Ultimately as foodies- you know it's not about price- until you don't feel you're getting your moneys worth... sadly that is the main impression I got here, over-hyped, typical (but one of The much less memorable steak houses I have ever been to... out of dozens). Pleasant service, awful table (right next to service door but also where managers like to stand and chatter and close to servers stations at the end of the main bar. We did come 30 Min early but it is Wednesday and honestly I would've preferred to sit at the bar than there. It would be more "fun" as a high top honestly because then at least you feel better with all the workers buzzing around you. My partner is not quite as discerning as I am but, if it weren't for the prompt attention of the manager, and the fantastic wines and live music I would've dropped this down to a 2. I treated my fiancé to dinner as part of his birthday celebration, and we truly enjoyed the experience. We had reservations and were seated promptly. Our waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable as she explained the differences of the steak options. From champagne to the tomahawk steak and sides, to the dessert and ambiance, all was amazing. The only thing I'd do differently is ask that the steak be well done vs medium well as we ordered. However, that was fine, because we were able to cook the leftovers to our liking once home. The staff as a whole were amazing and friendly, and I appreciated the kindness and great service.
