Pho Tai Chin Bo Vien Pho with rare steak, brisket, and beef ball 13. Tai Chin Noodle Soup
    Marcus F.

I want to say they definitely upgraded the flavor of their broth from when I had originally tried it several years ago. I'm glad I gave them a second chance and realize now I almost missed out on some great pho. The broth was super flavorful. Broth Grade: A I ordered the XL size bowl of pho because I felt a bit under the weather and I was really hungry. There was plenty of noodles. I did wish I had more basil for the size of bowl I had. The meats were standard. Grade: B Service was pretty good. I came during a lunch rush. I was lucky in that I got the last table. Many people were grabbing takeout orders due to the time. I expected a lot and I received what I asked for of the staff. Service Grade: A Thai Iced Tea was ok. It was neither horrible nor great. Grade: B Spring Rolls were decent. The rice paper had a good chew. Grade: B+ Extra Info: The place itself is located on the corner of Old County and Holly across from 7-Eleven. The noise level was fine while I was there. Big groups of over 4 might be challenging so I would call. Decor could be updated. I gave this 4 stars, but for the Peninsula, this may be the best broth I've had in the area! It really deserves a 4.5 for the area, but ratings are in whole numbers. Feel free to message me other places in the San Mateo County I should try.

Nice little family run Vietnamese restaurant. Family lunch. They were able to sit all 13 of us on a long table. Service was fast. Nice menu, generous portions of noodles. Parking can be limited. Enter from Holly street

Our kids love this place and we enjoy it too; it's one of those regular spots for a quick, delicious meal, especially if it's chilly out. My son gets the chicken pho, my wife and daughter each get a bowl of beef pho, and I'll switch between pho and vermicelli depending on how I'm feeling. We usually also all share an order of spring rolls. It's all tasty and the service is super friendly too. It's fun to watch whatever Vietnamese cooking videos is playing on the TV during a meal. We didn't come much until having a bad bowl of pho at another restaurant (SC Noodle House) and were looking for a nearby option to get that experience out of our heads. Since then this has been in our regular family meal rotation. Note that the parking lot can be a little tight but usually there are spots.

Staff was super attentive, food came out quick and everything was delicious. Wasn't busy when we were there on a Tues evening, but they did lots of to-go orders. Def order the Thai iced tea. Will be back!

Absolutely love this place! The pho is always fresh, flavorful, and comforting. The staff is so kind, and the service is consistently great. Easily my favorite pho spot, highly recommend!

The pho here is sooo freaking good. The broth is rich and flavorful. Noodles are chewy. Meat is tender, I love their brisket and meatballs. The thai tea is also strong and so good with the pho. The fish tank is so iconic and there's a decent amount of seating. Service is amazing. I love the couple that owns it, they're always attentive and nice. Food also comes out within like a minute of ordering. Overall highly reccomend!!

They close at 830pm and we arrived by 745pm, which I know was cutting it close but we were determined to eat very quickly. The place felt cozy, though at some point a bit too hot. Someone came to take our order as soon as we arrived. The lady that took our ordered seemed upset and annoyed. We got the vegetarian pho which was very good the broth had a pleasant taste to it. There was plenty of broth and noodles. We also got the spring rolls which were just okay. They were hard, which makes me think they might have been old. The peanut sauce was not very good from the color to the taste. The reason I'm giving it 2 stars is mainly because of the service. It was around 815pm and they were already shutting down everything. One of the ladies in there even had her purse on her arm. They came to bring the check before we were done eating. We rushed to finish our food because at some point I couldn't see anyone anymore and I genuinely thought they had left. From the moment we walked in to the moment we paid and left no one returned a smile to us. They seemed annoyed that we were there . We left the place at 820ish. As soon as we left they locked up. I understand we were some of their last customers but we did not cause them to stay there past their closing time. I did not feel welcome. I don't think I will be coming back.

Had low expectations coming here and was pleasantly surprised!…read more Food: T-he braised beef noodles were amazing. Noodles were chewier than most beef noodle soups I've had and the beef pieces were very tender and soft. The soup wasn't too spicy by itself and had alot of depth and flavor. -Pro-tip: There is a little self-serve station near the kitchen where you can get add'l condiments like cilantro, green onion, chili, and pickled daikon. SCORE. Add in the cilantro/green onion for a flavor explosion. -Ordered one of the combo noodles + 2 sides. For my sides, I got a blanched bok choy and a fried gyoza. The bok choy was needed to help cut the spiciness of the soup and to add veggies b/c without it, you'd just be having carbs, beef, and soup. Gyoza was a win too. Service: FAST and friendly, just how I like my non-fine dining restaurant experiences. You scan a QR code at the table and then choose an english/chinese option. If you have questions, you can ask the staff, but there isn't a TON of options to choose from, so make it easy on yourself and order a noodle soup. Ambiance: Ample seating at 1:30pm on a Sunday. Didn't have to wait, which was a big plus as all the other restaurants in San Mateo over near 3rd/4th and B street were packed. Overall: Highly recommend and would come again. We ordered the shrimp pad thai, red curry beef, chicken gra pow, Kaor Moo Yang (pork jowl), garlic rice, and coconut rice. Overall, the food was very flavorful, and we enjoyed the meal. The pad thai was the standout. Great flavor and good shrimp, although the noodles were surprisingly hard. We were told that's how they're supposed to be, but personally I'd prefer them a little more cooked. Still, we happily finished the whole plate. The pork jowl was excellent on its own. I don't care for the sweet sauce on the side at all. The red curry had great flavor, but the beef was a little tough. The gra pow was tasty but saltier than I prefer. The one thing I'd skip is the coconut rice. It was so sweet and gummy that it felt more like dessert than a side dish. Plain jasmine rice next time. Thai iced tea was delicious, and the Thai iced coffee was good but very sweet. We paid about $107 before tip for three people, which feels pretty standard for the Bay Area. Service was generally friendly, although our server was a little dismissive when we mentioned the pad thai noodles. Overall it's a great meal. Will come back to try other dishes for sure!

The fried tofu was not pillowy soft inside and fried crisp outside.
