Located on Laurel street in San Carlos new canton restaurant is a cute Chinese restaurant with an attached boba tea shop. The owners and works are very nice and friendly. The restaurant is quite clean and there a good indoor seating options in both shops. What really impressed me was the quality of service and the portion size - very generous and the food came out fast. I particularly enjoyed the hot and sour soup and the salt and pepper fish. We chose New Canton because of good reviews on Next Door. All aspects lived up to our expectations -especially the portion sizes. We were 9.5 people and each portion had enough for all of us to have some, including left overs to take home. We were celebrating the 89th birthday of our patriarch and the table was all set up for us to be at one table when we arrived at 6:30 on Saturday night of Labor Day weekend. We practically had the place to ourselves and the service was excellent... right down to the iced water being refilled several times. Even the menus are especially attractive. The food was excellent and each dish had its unique taste. Hard to please that many people - including an almost 3 year old - but it happened. All raved that it was the perfect place for our celebration.... Complete with a hug from the proprietor when we left having had a parting ginger cookie. Thank you Haley! I was excited to try new Canton restaurant when I saw they had a variety of plant based items! I ordered sesame tofu but I was disappointed. It seems like it was made from something other than tofu and the texture was very mushy. It was hard to get past that! That's the only dish I've tried so likely the other menu items are much better. I was only able to try a few dishes, the wonton soup and prawn chow mein. The soup was very hearty and warm. The chow mein was more on the oilier side but still good. Both dishes lacked some flavor but it was doable. Service was quick, they had the food ready super quickly within 15 minutes and we live a block away from this place. I have no idea why they doing something like that and very confused if they don't want ppl order online why they still open for that. The main reason why I drive into San Carlos was to buy a clock. But when all was said and done I also came across a wonderful little restaurant called the New Canton. I'm always a little skeptical of places I have never tried before. But I just had a feeling about this restaurant. Like a movie you've never seen before but you know it's going to be good. That's how I would describe this place. It seemed like ordering ahead online then picking up your food is the way the locals do it here. I tried to order online but the site was frozen. But no worries, since I wanted to go inside and get the feel of the place anyways. I placed my orders and took a seat. After a short wait everything came out hot, and it sure smelled good! Even on the way home with a 25 minute drive ahead of me, this food did not smell typical like other places. Everything was fresh and flavorful. I'm always up for Chinese food especially when it's Lunar New Year. Since I'm frequently in San Carlos, I've always wanted to try New Canton as I usually see people getting take out from there. Anyway, this resto is not in the busiest section of Laurel street, but has lots of traction. I ordered online and was super easy and efficient to do so on my phone. I requested for pick up at 6:30pm and was ready by 6:15pm. Next door is a fruit tea and boba place, which I believe new canton also owns since the lady who helped me also rang me up and made my smoothie. At any rate, was happy that my food was all packed and ready prior to my actual pick up time. I ordered pork dumplings, honey walnut prawns, crispy fried house special chow mean and beef with oyster sauce. All were super! Pork dumplings were perfect and had both vinegar and Soy sauce on side. Honey walnut prawns were a little more mayonnaisey for me and wouldn't liked more walnuts. Crispy noodles were perfect and ask for sauce on side so noods are super crispy and not soggy upon eating. Nice sauce balance with the vegetables, seafood, and chicken. Lastly, the beef with oyster sauce was outstanding as it actually included vegetables - all that I love to eat (snow peas, mushrooms, carrots). All in all, a great find in San Carlos. I rolled into the Horse Shoe shape dining area and was Greeted and Seated . I was presented with a Menu . I perused the Menu and was brought a Glass of Water . When my Waitress returned I ordered the Salt and Pepper Calamari , Seafood Chow Fun and Aspragus Beef. New Canton is a Sparsely decorated restaurant . My Calamari came out first . It was cooked the right was and was not oily . It had a good taste to it. My Seafood Chow fun and Aspragus Beef came out next . Theses really hit the spot . New Canton is unique in that it serves both "americanized chinese" food, but also serves "real" authentic cantonese food. The folks there are legit old-school chinese chefs who can cook different styles of chinese food based on the needs of each table. The waiters there are also quite talkative and try to get to know the customers. When I ate there, the waiter seemed to know all the other tables around me on a first-name basis and was happy to chat. I tried the fried rice, and was pleasantly surprised to see that it was cooked with a really authentic flavor--the rice is dry (which is good for fried rice), served in a metal pot that is still hot (another plus) with just the right amount of shrimp and egg pieces. I love the asparagus & green bean dish. Also a big fan of the shrimp dumplings. The woman who is running the show there 24/7 is a gem. The building looks like it was actually an apartment building until I got a closer look. Focusing on Cantonese and a few northern Chinese dishes, my co-worker and I are still looking for good Asian food in these parts. We gave the potstickets, basil chicken, and drunken beef (beef stir fried with garlic and a Chinese wine sauce). The potstickers were average, the beef lacked a bit of sodium (remiedied with salt and chili sauce) but the basil chicken was pretty good. I have a feeling the dishes can be hit and miss here so I might give it another try based on the chicken dish alone. 3.5 stars. read more

Ordered delivery & from this place for the first time last night, & I definitely just found my new Chinese take out spot!!! I've eaten a lot of Chinese restaurants & let me start off by saying that their food is not greasy compared to the ones I've eaten at. I ordered the combo fried rice which was definitely the topping on the sundae for me. The rice had a dry texture which I love in fried rice, it also has beef, chicken & shrimp. & the portions are large enough to feed a family of 3!!! I love that! The chow mein was alright, nothing too memorable. The calamari was delicious & plentiful. The orange chicken I read everyone loved, but it tasted a little dry to me :( However I'm giving this place 4 stars mainly because of the combo rice, portion & the price! Full on disappointment all the way around tonight. Two stars instead of one because I have had decent food in the past. I Used Door Dash and it was an hour after pickup until I got it i& a half an hour late from the latest estimate. Not the restaurants fault the driver took an hour but I called to tell her that the driver delivered late in case I want to track any delivery issues and that the special chow fun was nothing like it normally is. That was one of my favorite things -usually full of flavor and chock-full of ingredients. The meat was dry, the noodles very bland with no real flavor, hardly any ingredients and a ton of noodles. Yuck. I was trying to tell the woman on the phone that the chow fun was not good in case they wanted to see what the chef was doing tonight because it's normally excellent. She literally went psycho on me screaming like she was going to have a breakdown- you know that full crazed out of control screaming?!! telling me to call door dash, that they "cook for me" and I said I did call Door Dash and she just wouldn't stop screaming ! it was unlike anything I've experienced . I finally tried? got to say what I wanted to say that the special chow fun was not good tonight and hung up.
