This review is just for the bun bo hue. I live in Newark and there are a few places closer to me that have it, but whenever I'm craving bun bo hue, I always end up coming here. The broth has a lot of flavor, a little spicy and just hits the spot. Good amount of noodles and meat, and the portion is pretty filling. The menu is what you would expect from a Pho spot; pricing is fair. It's a little dirty, seat has always food / crumbs from the previous guests. It doesn't look like it's wiped or cleaned up for the next guests. The food and drinks are okay, they are decent. Customer service is okay; it is decent. I wish I could do 4.5 stars. Who doesn't love a nice bowl of pho on a cold Friday night? My husband and I had a date night and I really wanted to try a new spot. Yelp helped us find this gem. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted and seated immediately. We looked over the menus, got water right away, and placed our appetizer order quickly. We wanted to splurge, so we got two. Chicken wing app: This is the only reason my review isn't a full 5 stars. One of the wings wasn't fully cooked and left a bad taste in my mouth. The rest of the wings were crunchy, and the sauce they came with was sweet and sour. Egg rolls: These were delicious! I'm so glad we still got these along with the wings. They were crunchy and very savory. This restaurant has a very chill vibe for customers, but the employees are a well-oiled machine. One person sat us, another took our appetizer order, and then Tammy took our meal order. We know Tammy from our kid's school, but that doesn't make my opinion biased. She was friendly and quick to take our order. H1. House Special Rice Noodle Soup w/ Shrimp, Squid, Chicken & Fish Ball (LARGE): This was delicious. For starters, it came out super fast--I expected it to take longer since they were busy. Secondly, they gave me soooo much broth, which is usually a bad thing, but it was so tasty I didn't mind at all. Everything was cooked perfectly, and I got more shrimp than I usually do. My husband made his own rice plate--chicken and beef with rice only. Unfortunately, the portion wasn't great. The food itself was actually very good--the pho was flavorful and well-prepared. However, the rest of the experience was completely ruined by two major issues. First, the artificial air freshener/fragrance coming from the restroom was overwhelmingly strong and spread all the way into the dining area. It was so intense that the chemical scent literally clung to the dining seats and transferred onto my clothes/pants. I had to spend so much effort deep-washing and soaking my clothes after getting home just to get the smell out. Second, there is a serious lack of billing transparency. My menu item was $13.50, but after adding tax and a $2 tip, my card was charged $18.48 instead of the expected amount. On top of that, they didn't even provide an itemized receipt to explain the extra charge. Good food does not make up for terrible indoor air quality and sketchy billing practices. Will not be returning. Update regarding owner's response: The owner claims that itemized charges are clearly shown on the screen before payment, but that is simply not true. At checkout, the screen displayed only a single total line of around $15 with zero itemized breakdown, and no printed receipt was provided. Instead of addressing the actual math, the owner deflected with standard PR lines. Let's look at the numbers directly: Menu item price: $13.50 Fremont Sales Tax (10.25%): $1.38 Subtotal with tax: $14.88 Tip added: $2.00 Expected total: $16.88 Actual card charge: $18.48 Where did the extra $1.60 come from? If there are truly no hidden fees or surcharges since 1999, please explain the $1.60 discrepancy rather than dismissing legitimate feedback as "oversensitivity" or "unfounded accusations." As for the fragrance, when an artificial scent is heavy enough to physically cling to seating and soak into customers' clothing, it is an indoor air quality issue, not a personal sensitivity issue. read more

This used to be our go-to spot for a quick meal, but unfortunately, our most recent visit changed our opinion. My husband ordered the combination pho, and while he was about halfway through his noodles, he discovered a bug buried deep inside them. He informed our server, but his response was disappointing. Instead of showing concern, he simply said that it must have just flown in. Considering the bug was deep inside the noodles, that explanation didn't make sense. After finding the bug, we both completely lost our appetite and couldn't finish the rest of our meal. When we went to pay, another gentleman (possibly the manager) at the register asked how everything was. We explained what had happened, and he was already aware of the situation. He apologized and said we should have been offered a replacement meal, but the server never offered us one. He did remove the noodles from our bill, which I appreciated, and I was thankful for his apology and professionalism. While I appreciate the cashier's concern and effort to make things right, the server's lack of empathy and poor handling of the situation left a lasting impression. I moved from sj up here and I'm so glad there's a decent pho place nearby. I admit I was skeptical at first because there's not a lot of viet people here and the staff speak such good English. But I decided to try this place because I really needed my comfort food. I was pleasantly surprised! The broth is SOLID. It's nice and clear, full of umami flavor with some sweetness but not too sweet. I just wish they have fresh noodles. My husband is a fan of the beef fried rice. I got the Pho soup with steak and brisket and it is so good. I'd even say it's healing. Pho99's broth is so tasty that I forget to drink my drink at times. The brisket is tender and the steak has a good size to it. Their noodles are firm, thin and enjoyable til the last bite. The portions are worth the price and leave me happily stuffed. I love this restaurant and eat here frequently. The food is amazing and the staff is very friendly. They always welcome me with warm beautiful smiles and remember my name.
