Pork Tocino Banh Mi is so good!
Chas S.

Stop into this sweet spot and cross your fingers that they've got the Pork Tocino Banhmi special available. Take in the UC vibes and sit outside on the benches and dig into your sandwich. Enjoy the slightly sweet atchara-style pickles and heavy shake of black pepper. As you eat, you'll be thinking, THIS BANH MI IS SO DANG GOOD! What genius thought to put Filipino ingredients on a Vietnamese sandwich??? Perfect. Looking forward to my next visit.

Pork Tocino Banh Mi
Uriel I.

I ordered via phone and my order was ready within 10 minutes. The staff were super friendly and welcoming upon picking up my order. Their Pork Tocino Banh Mi is immaculate. The mix of sweet & savory flavors made it perfect for me. Loved their Vietnamese coffee as well. Definitely one of my new favorite Banh Mi spots in the East Bay.

There's more meat than what it seems. There's just so much fresh vegetables hiding it. Spring Rolls hella good!

Overall 4.5 out of 5 THE GOOD ° Sandwiches are DINOSAUR big! - Packed with meat, vegetables, jalapeno with nice heat - wife and I enjoyed our Grilled Chicken and Pork Banh Mi's ° Shrimp and Chicken Spring Rolls were SO GOOD! - something I've never seen but should be normalized... Green apple inside of it, wow. ° Clean interior and exterior ° Crazy fresh ingredients THE BAD ° True, you can get 2 × Banh Mi's and Spring Rolls for $20 less - Dinosaur dabatably makes it worth it with how big it is and how good the flavor is! THE UGLY ° Not a fan of the hours. I'd love to pick them up for dinner more often but 5pm closing makes that tough.

Local special

Their shaken beef, get that with the Vietnamese coffee and love your self! That toasted bread and their balance of mayo and veggies will delight you! Worth the higher price tag. Only version better are found in San Jose, yes, better than the Oakland stuff, which used to be the top of my local lists. No where to sit, order, wait, and eat in car! The union city branch has local specials

Grilled Chicken Sandwich - mostly bread
Sophia K.

Came here to grab a quick lunch. Staff is super friendly, but price of a banh mi is not. I paid $34 for 2 sandwiches where as I could get a least 3 sandwiches down the street. I got the Grilled Chicken and The Special. The chicken was tender, but could be more flavorful. There also wasn't that much chicken in the sandwich. There was mostly bread. The Special was okay. There was more meat, but lacked a lot of flavor. I don't like the mayo that they use - it tastes too American and I wanted more a Vietnamese mayo (given that it's a Vietnamese sandwich). My favorite part of the sandwich was the bread as it was crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. Overall, I expected a lot from this $15 sandwich. It was decent, but I rather go somewhere else for the price.

Kare-kare banh mi! Sooooooo fabulous!!!
Dezi S.

Such a great little shop with all your Bahn mi needs with a Filipino flare! SO good! Had the Kare-kare one and the give you the bagoong too! I wanted rice on top it was so good! The servers were extra courteous and very quick! It's never a long wait! They get you in and out so you can enjoy your food! Wish they had space for tables, but there is the park around the corner! This is our go to Bahn mi spot fasho!

Kare kare with bagoong is chef's kiss!
Anna R.

We used to grab banh min at their SF and Pacifica when we lived up in the city many moons ago. It was one of the best places to get them. So what a pleasant surprise to see them branch out and to the East bay of all places!! Had them bookmarked ever since I knew they opened but the weekday only hours prolonged my eventual visit. Well, finally made it and can we say Kare Kare and Tocino banh mi?? As if I didn't already love them enough and was excited to have them so close, they now have Filipino inspired banh mi?? The Kare Kare was all I imagined it to be and so so good!! And it comes with a side of bagoong bc why would you eat kare kare without it?? The roll is the perfect amount of crunch and chew and all the filling is so complementary. Lifelong fan and will be back regularly! So happy you guys are in the Une!! Thrilled to be so close to Dinosaurs!

Watermelon smoothie with lychee jelly
Joanne R.

So excited to stumble upon this spot for lunch! Ordered the beef banh mi & tocino banh mi with the watermelon lychee drink. The bread was really crunchy on the outside & soft in the inside. There was a generous portion of pickled vegetables which I absolutely loved & the team member who helped me was super friendly. The watermelon smoothie with lychee was okay. It was pretty bland because of the watermelon itself. It's not bad but I probably wouldn't get it again. There are no tables so this is mostly an eat in your car or take out spot. Can't wait to come back & try the kare kare banh mi which was sold out when I came for lunch.

Meatball
Jessica N.

Was curious about this place since I've never tried the one in the city. Located at the bottom of an apartment/condo complex. Very limited parking for that reason. Only street parking or maybe 2 guest spots. There was no line on a weekday at lunch. I ordered the tocino and meatball. It took about 10 minutes for the sandwiches to be ready. Kinda pricy - $16 per sandwich. No seating at all, this is just for takeout. The bread was very very good. It had a good crunch on the outside but was very soft and chewy. The meat quality is good. The tocino was a little sweet for me, but I really enjoyed the meatball. Overall this place does fill a void for banh mi in the area and they're worth checking out.

Tocino (Special)
Philip Y.

Friendly staff. I ordered the special Tocinto Sandwich with Filipino twist of Vietnamese Banh Mi. The bread was freshly toasted and pretty of meat. However, it was too saucy and dripped everywhere on the wrapper. BTW, for $17 per sandwich, it was kind of pricy.

Kare kare banh mi
Johnllen C.

My cousin told me about this place, and I'm so glad I finally tried it. I think it used to be open only on weekdays, but now they are open on weekends, which is a huge plus. I ordered the beef kare-kare banh mi and wow, the first bite was incredibly delicious. The beef was so tender and full of flavor. It was a great fusion of Filipino and Vietnamese flavors. They even gave a small cup of bagoong (shrimp paste), which really elevated the sandwich. The flavors were bold but still very well balanced. The bread looked hard at first, but it had the perfect amount of crunch and did not hurt your mouth at all. My boyfriend got the special, and that was also really good. Overall, such a great experience. I am so happy they are open on weekends now and I cannot wait to go back and try the tocino one next.

Pork Tocino Banh Mi
Terrysue T.

I felt like a Vietnamese sandwich for lunch, and this place showed up on Yelp to be only 5 minutes from where I was at at the moment! I decided to try it. I ordered the Pork Tocino Banh Mi and the Vietnamese Iced Coffee. I was quite impressed with the banh mi. It was so good! The bread was fresh, and lightly toasted on the outside. The sandwich was hearty, tasty, and juicy. I would definitely come back to try the other sandwiches. The iced coffee had a nice, bold flavor! It was good, too!

Solid 4.5 stars! Not the easiest spots to park at, especially during rush hour since it's street parking right on UC Blvd but I went right before noon so I was able to parallel park right infront. Small shop, the guys behind the counter are eager and happy for your business. What would've earned them 5 stars is if they would've made small tak with us, being that they're new and it's small inside, a simple "thanks for coming in, how did you hear about us?" Etc would've gone a long way... but it's fine. They were heads down prepping food. Quite a few signature sandwiches to pick from but I saw a special next to their register saying "ITS BACK! Beef Kare Kare Banh Mi" which is sliced rib eye in a savory peanut sauce with a side of bagoong (shrimp paste). All of the sweet and savory flavors. The banh mi was thick and flavorful, and I don't think I've had one with these kind of flavors before. Not your traditional Vietnamese banh mi's. But let's talk about their Pork and Shrimp fresh spring rolls. Big pieces of shrimp, the grilled lemon grass pork comes through with every bite. I actually prefer the spring roll over the banh mi Yes, the prices might seem a little high, especially for a banh mi and/or spring roll, but these aren't your typical or traditional sandwiches. The quality of ingredients and just to keep a business open these days requires items to be priced the way they are.

My wife had the squid and a mixed vegetable dish while I ordered the grilled marinated chicken and shrimp both plates come with rice (steamed or fried). IN THIS ECONOMY??? hell nah. i've never been truly disappointed but the food is obviously quite mid, not mid enough to get 3 stars though. service is okay! located in the plaza near to crackhead center (mcdonalds) and others. easy to find parking, seating not bad i guess spring rolls - good! in an average way. peanut sauce is good but a bit watery and salty. rolls were not like fat but also not malnourished so i suppose that's a good thing. nonetheless i chowed it down because i eat whatever is in front of me 8/10 house special vermicelli bowl - had some shrimp which had no taste aka devoid of flavor! that's pretty crazy in a vietnamese restaurant. pork was kinda burnt, flavor on point. not enough nuoc cham, lots of veggies. despite its flaws the bowl is good and hits pretty hard when you're constipated 7/10 overall this place is around 3.5 stars. if they fail me ONCE i will drop it to like 3 idk. sometimes mid food hits the hardest because you always know what to expect!

My partner called in two orders of chicken pho soup to-go. We were working from home with a sick child, so he rushed to pick up the order on his lunch. When about to eat, we discover they gave us 2 orders of beef pho soup in error. We're short on time so it's annoying & inconvenient, but no big deal, we'll just call them & surely they will make it right. WRONG. The lady employee said to come back & she'd give us the right order & throw in an extra soup. Given our time constraints for work, we were not able to go back in that moment. We asked if they could door dash the correct order to us. NO was the answer. Just give us a refund, since we don't eat beef & can't go back right now. Lady TOLD US SHE COULDNT GIVE US A REFUND. "WE DONT DO THAT" she said. I work with credit card machine so I know she could indeed give us a refund without the card present, but maybe she meant as a policy they do not. She kept insisting we go back in that moment to get the correct order even after repeatedly telling her we couldn't. It was not an option for us with work meetings & a sick child. She then told us to come back later if we couldn't go now. With gas prices so high, this was just impractical. After spending 10 mins on the phone with the lady who wouldn't accommodate us, I told my partner we would file a credit card complaint & will eat the soup without the meat because we had no other food readily & had to feed our sick child. In the afternoon, my partner decided he would drive there instead of filing a complaint, high gas prices & all. We call the lady again to let her know. SHE ASKS US TO BRING HER THE WRONG FOOD ORDER FROM EARLIER. Are you serious??? This is the first time she mentioned this to us. We took pics earlier & could show her as proof, but we explained we had eaten the soup BECAUSE WE NEEDED TO EAT LUNCH, but could bring her the beef, but it was just so petty & gross (HOPEFULLY THEY WERENT GOING TO SERVE IT TO SOMEONE ELSE 6 HOURS LATER????), I was outraged but kept my cool. I asked for her manager. She said the manager was not there. Again I asked for a refund, she insisted we bring her back the food. The conversation was so petty my partner told me to forget about taking her the old food, he didn't trust they wouldn't tamper with his new food at this point. I told the lady that we would be filing a credit card complaint to get our money back. She said "okay" and hung up. No apology. In fact, she never apologized for the ordeal. When this has happened with other restaurants they have made things right, EASILY. Which is what PHO MAMA should have done. Never going back again. We only went cus Red Chili in Hayward is currently closed. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Not to mention I'm still hungry cus that soup without meat was not filling. Plus, imagine the work environment there if employees are not at liberty to make things right in a practical and logical way.

TWO PHOS AND TWO RICE PLATES…read more The first time I came here was about a couple of months ago for Sunday dinner with my family. I'm not a fan of pho so I decided to order a rice plate, which was Combo Plate #2 that included one grilled pork and two fried chicken wings. The rice plate I ordered was ok. Even though the chicken wings were cooked inside the meat tasted bland. I wasn't planning to come back here anytime soon. On the menu however I saw a pho item that consisted of chicken quarters. The next time I came here was a couple of days later for lunch. I ordered the pho with chicken quarters. With the addition of the ginger scallion sauce the dish is basically Hainan chicken pho. I've had this type of pho at another eatery and is the best chicken soup I've ever had. Since the chicken isn't shredded, the meat isn't dry. Usually for Hainan chicken I would dip the chicken in the ginger scallion sauce. I did something different for the first time. I added the scallion ginger sauce in the broth. This brought more flavor to the broth. I'd rather have scallion ginger sauce in the broth than sriracha. I'm not a fan of pho. Having the chicken quarters pho provided me a different perspective on pho. When I started having pho I would order get rare steak and beef tendon. What I noticed is that the rare steak changes the texture of the broth, which becomes murky. Maybe that's why I never craved for pho. I find well done beef atrocious. After having the chicken quarters pho I thought why not try the well done brisket. About week later I ordered the well done brisket pho for lunch. From the outset I noticed the broth from the well-done pho is clearer than any beef pho before. How did the broth taste? The broth was the best tasting pho with beef ingredients. I think that has to do with not having raw slices of beef. The blood from the raw beef makes the broth murky. Since the brisket was well-done there was no blood that made the broth cloudy. Also the flavor of the broth enhanced due to the fat from the brisket. The well-done brisket give me a different perspective on pho. Maybe in the future I just order well-done brisket for pho. My last visit I had another rice plate. As I already ordered the chicken leg quarters pho I wanted to try the rice plate version. This dish is Pho Nation's version of Hainan chicken. Even though the scallion ginger was served this dish is different from Hainan chicken as chicken at Pho Nation is steamed and served hot. I ate two phos and two rice dishes. Normally at pho eateries I tend to like the rice dishes more, but at Pho Nation I enjoyed the phos more. If I want to eat pho with a clear yet tasty broth I would come to Pho Nation for either the chicken quarters or well-done brisket pho.

What I don't like is the portions are very little, you get very little noodles and meats for the price that you pay. I've had portions for the same size elsewhere and it's much cheaper. I frequent this location when I'm in the area but it's not on my top list for Pho. You get a lot of broth but much less of everything else.
