We are still on the hunt for the best pho in South Sac and Pho Xe Lua came highly recommended. Walking in, the restaurant definitely feels legit and old school. A lot of regulars and solo diners seems to visit this establishment. The menu was really big with a variety of options but we went with pho and spring rolls. My husband ordered the #11 but somehow our server misheard us and gave us #7. I wasn't having much of an appetite and got the baby pho and shrimp and pork spring rolls. Except the shrimp was missing so it was just pork spring rolls. I will say the portions are huge. The amount of noodles even in the baby pho is extremely generous and a really good price for $5. The spring rolls are also the largest I've ever seen and the grilled pork was smoky and sweet. However, my husband is a protein lover and was very disappointed by his meat toppings and the broth was nothing special. I don't think the noodles were rinsed well as it was soaking up the broth so quickly and made it hard to eat. Despite the restaurant name I don't think the pho here was exceptional. After that, we knew we had to come back and try what they're really known for: their pho. This time, we both ordered the #1 combination pho bowl. The portions were huge, loaded with a great variety of meats, all in generous amounts. I went with the extra-large bowl--which was probably more than I needed (next time I'll stick with a large)--but it was absolutely worth it. We also ordered the ribs and egg rolls, and both were excellent additions to the meal. The service was good, and the pho itself was well above average--rich, flavorful, and satisfying. We were in the town and wanted to explore some good pho, and found this place on my want to go list. I ordered the small Combination House Special beef rice noodle soup; it came with rare steak, flank, brisket, tendon, tripe, and beef balls. It also came with a good amount of side veggies, which was a big plus. The broth was decent, and the portion was generous. I honestly doubted whether it was really a small bowl. I also tried their Shrimp & Boiled Pork Spring Rolls. This was a letdown; the wrapper was loose, and the pork was quite dry. Even though the rolls were huge, I didn't find anything special about them. I ordered the Vietnamese Iced Coffee with Condensed Milk as well, and this was another disappointment. The coffee was not strong enough or sweet enough, and it ended up being quite bitter. This was my first time having a Vietnamese coffee that tasted bitter. I may have found my go-to spot for pho! The size large pho dac biet comes in ridiculously generous portions for only $15. I don't think I've ever encountered this much value at any other Vietnamese restaurant. The broth tastes above average and I liked the tripe+meatballs the most out of the assorted proteins. I also sampled my friend's charbroiled pork and rice which deserves equal praise. Similar to the pho, it's a huge portion and has an excellent savory flavor to it. This spot has a solid menu of Vietnamese and chinese dishes. The Vietnamese food is comparable to any spot in town and the prices are not bad considering how everything is pricey now. The special aka Dac Biet Pho comes with everything a proper Pho should have and the large is enough to feed two, if needed. This is possibly the best item here and it's good dine in or take out. They have a variety of other vietnamese food that are all solid with good size portions. I recommend the egg rolls and spring rolls as appetizers. The Chinese food is also popular and my go to is the beef chow fun. The ingredients are cooked well and it's not too oily. The bowl was huge and filling, and the broth was extremely palatable. The entire soup was comforting, especially on a chilly day. The interior of the restaurant had plenty of tables and chairs available. The service was friendly and attentive, and the price points were fairly affordable. Tables, sauce containers , and utensils were all clean. Payment: When ready you will take note of your table number and head to the front. Tell them your table number and they will ring you up. Usually I get it in a bowl. However serving wise, it was quite a big plate of vermicelli noodles and the grilled beef had good flavor. They use soup bowls used for banquets that should be for 12 bowls of soup but for one massive bowl of pho. Recently wanted to try something new, and every other dish is also just as big! I came to Pho Xe Lua with the intention of ordering pho, but once I saw the menu, I realized they had a great variety of options beyond just soups. Their appetizers also looked really tempting, but I didn't have the appetite to go all out that day. I ended up ordering the shrimp curry over rice, and let me tell you -- it was such an amazing plate. I haven't had something this flavorful and satisfying in a long time. The curry was rich, well-seasoned, and comforting without being too heavy. It also came with a bowl of broth on the side, which I assume is meant to be poured over the rice. I didn't use it since I prefer my rice not too wet, but I did take a sip at the end and it was incredibly flavorful on its own. I also ordered a taro drink without boba, and it was super creamy and smooth -- exactly how a good taro drink should be. I forgot what my friend ordered, but it's shown in the photos, and I did try a bite of his dish, which was also really good. We came during the week around 2 PM, and it wasn't busy at all. We were seated right away, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Overall, this was a great visit, and I definitely want to come back to try more items on the menu -- including the pho next time. I've never been to Pho Xe Lua but I remember passing it every day when I was coming home from High School (at west campus). I figured it was time to give it a try! This place is just awesome. It's spacious (a lot larger than it looks), efficient, and clean. On this particular evening got the large (priced at a cool $7.50) with all the yummy fixins. I tried the pho tai (number 2, rare steak with rice noodles). Can we talk about the abundance of this bowl though? It was HUGE -- packed with noodles and severely generous portions of meat. I was impressed. I could barely finish my bowl and I'll tell you right now, that's normally not an issue for me. The broth was deep brown and super rich. I added my usual condiments (sugar, fish sauce, hoisin, hot oil, sriracha) but not nearly as much as I normally do. The soup was amazing as is. The venue itself is nicely laid out with a large number of tables so I don't ever foresee this being an issue for groups (big or small). The staff there are exceptionally good about cleaning tables right after the customers get up and they're also on top of their table touches. These people were excellent and made every effort to be as hospitable as possible. Loved it! Pho xe Lua, you made my evening. I ordered delivery from Pho Xe Lua today after having eaten here before and enjoying the food and even friendly staff. I ordered 3 items, 1 of which was the chicken chow fun #60. Unfortunately, the vegetables described in this dish were not included at all. The description mentions mushrooms, carrots and broccoli. The chow fun I received was your typical Chinese style chow fun which would be fine if that's what matched the description. My other two dishes of beef chow fun and the #30 were good and tasty. I used to go here all the time before the pandemic, probably 3-5 times a month because my family and I loved their pho. However, something seems to have changed now and it's not as good as it used to be. The broth is similar, but doesn't hit the same because now it gets cloudy very fast from the noodles and it's salty with not as much flavor. The last few times we have visited, the noodles were mushy, which was disappointing. Also, I went to mention that there was a cut of meat (probably the brisket) with big pieces of hard tendon attached to it that made it hard to chew, so we would have to spit what we can't eat or use our hand to forcefully pull it off. Food service is fast, since it only took a few minutes for the pho to come out all at once. Our server quickly brought us cooked bean sprouts within a minute when we asked. It was very busy around 12 on Sunday, and there were limited parking spaces. It seems to share a parking lot with an apartment complex that's located right next to it. We stood near the entrance for about 5 minutes in order to get seated. Some employees looked at us a few times, but didn't greet us or say anything. The restaurant is pretty big inside with lots of seating and accessible tables. They have a lot of options on their menu, and if you don't want pho you can always try their rice plates! This is hands down the best pho place I've been to out of seven I've tried. There's something about their noodles, meat, and broth that just makes their pho delicious. When I used to live in Sacramento and first tried this place, I thought, "Wow, this pho is pretty good." I was feeling a bit under the weather today and decided that Pho was needed. I ordered via Door Dash for lunch and it came super fast and super hot (even burnt my tongue, but it was worth it). I ordered a small Chicken Pho and it hit the spot! It included so much chicken and noodles - it was even more than I feel like some Pho places give you for a big sized bowl. The to-go container was filled to the brim! It also came with all of the fixings like basil, jalapeno slices, green and white onions, limes, etc. plus packets of Hoisin Sauce and Sriracha. Updating my review. Listen I've been coming here for YEARS and let me tell you I never get disappointed. I just hate how yall found out about my secret!! Now it's always busy here !! Hahah. My favorite is the number 12 with extra tendon. So yummy!! Every time I order pho, I always get a side of nuoc beo which is scallions in oil drippings. Super good it enhances the broth!
