I really don't understand reviews that give this place less than four stars. Pho Yum is slowly becoming one of my favorite Albany eating establishments. Now that is perhaps not saying a lot, as I spend a good deal of time grumbling about the lack of any real food scene in Albany. So five stars might be stretching it a little bit, but I truly have had great experiences here so far. The food is fresh and delicious. I know other reviewers have said there is better pho in Albany. Where? I have long been a fan of Van's and do love their pho as well, but Pho Yum is at least their equal with a nice, rich broth -- so much flavor and such fresh accompaniments. I love the simplicity of the menu that simultaneously offers lots of variations. The vermicelli bowls are like deconstructed summer rolls, which is to say awesome, because the summer rolls are the same quality as they were at My Linh. The only thing I haven't tried yet is a bahn mi sandwich, but I am looking forward to that on my next visit. It has been quiet when I've been there, but I have experienced only had polite (not overly but enough) and efficient service. The place is VERY clean and bright. I like that. When I asked the server, she brought the same spoiled bean sprouts on a different plate. Yikes. But when I asked the owner, she brought the fresh ones! Noodles were overcooked (they boiled it way before they got an order and just poured the soup). But extra noodles were boiled right after we made an order. Quality was acceptable however such little segments for what they charge. I requested pho with eye round and brisket. The brisket was slight and overcooked. Modest quantity of meat. Juices was tasty. They forgot my lime the last time and this time they forgot both my boyfriend's and my hoisin and sriracha sauce. This review will be heavily about Bubble tea, so please don't get annoyed with me! :P I went here about a month ago with my mum, and we ordered a ton of food between the two of us to make up for not eating the entire day. We were NOT disappointed! The portions are nice and hefty, especially the pho, and everything was savory and delicious. I honestly cannot remember what else we ordered, but it involved a sandwich, 2 orders of pho, spring rolls, vermicelli, and bubble tea. We pigged out, and I actually feel bad for our server! The service was lovely. The young man serving us was very patient with my mum and I who had zero idea how vietnamese cuisine worked! He laughed with us and suggested some delicious things, and we left full, happy and in good spirits. The options were insane! You could basically make a custom pho out of anything they had. It was really fun picking out what we wanted in our delicious noodle soup, and we personally had a lot of fun with it. The vermicelli was very good, though strange for me because I had never had it before. The dressing they used on it was AMAZING and I wish I could have brought a bottle of that home for future use! The bubble tea was lovely, though my opinion may be biased as I've only had it from 2 other locations, and in those situations, it was not milk tea like what you receive at Pho Yum! If you're a boba critic, I'm afraid I cannot give you the best critique here. At under $4 a serving, though, it's not that crazy to buy it once and see how you like it! One complaint I had was their pink sapphire bubble tea. For this tea, they use a special herbal tea that for me tastes a lot like chemicals and ick. If you're not into very bitter medicinal tastes, you probably won't like this one, despite its alluring and adorable pink coloration. I'm personally a bigger fan of the Amber, and Jade being a closed second! Admittedly, I like their bubble tea enough that I come here at least once or twice a month to get my bubble tea fix. My only complaint is that I wish I could order a much larger size, at what looks like 12 or 16 OZ, it seems to go like lightning! But I'm known for over-indulging, so that may be right up your alley. :) If you're looking for local bubble tea locations, I do recommend at least giving this place a try! Pricey for just Pho! The restaurant is clean and ac'd. It's nicely decorated with Vietnamese inspired art and Vietnamese music playing in the background. This is the first place I've been to where you order pho like you do with pizza. The base soup and noodle is $7.25, and meat "toppings" are $1.50 and above. So depending on how many meats you like, you could be paying a lot. But this gives you more options. The base pho soup is very tasty and the flavor is well balanced. Even with the lime juice, meats, basil, and sprouts, you can taste the subtle spices you would expect in a good pho soup base. The meat is fresh and portion is plentiful. The beef balls are actually the freshest I've seen and they taste wonderful. I also had the iced coffee with condensed milk. Presentation is nice with the coffee drip and glass of ice on a long plate. The pho menu is a bit confusing especially with the way they price the meats. In the end, I would have to give them 3 stars because it's overpriced even for the amount of noodles I got; for the same price, I can get a extra large bowl of pho elsewhere. read more

Very simple restaurant in a strip mall on main commercial district in Albany. Tastefully appointed in side with 8-10 tables. Low prices! Excellent, high quality fare with very fresh ingredients. They're not afraid to keep it simple and focus on quality and freshness. The pho was light and fresh with tons of veggies and meat. (you can order any ingredients to go into it). We also ordered a sandwich and the french bread used was fantastic! Can't wait to return and will give this a big thumbs up! read more

I really do hate giving local establishments low stars, but I just am not the biggest fan of Pho Yum. I absolutely love a steaming bowl of delicious pho on a cold winter day, but I feel that there is just much better in the area (Van's). Pho Yum is located in a little plaza on Central Ave and is kind of easy to miss if you don't see it quick enough. It is small inside with not a lot of atmosphere but the two times I've been there, I have never had a problem getting a table. The servers are friendly and attentive. Both times my dining companions and I have ordered pho as well as summer rolls. They offer pho with a number of different meats (chicken, shrimp, beef meatball, brisket, tendons, tripe, tofu, veggies). They also have bahn mi as well as noodle dishes but I have never tried any of them. I did enjoy the summer rolls they were quite good but the pho just fell short. The broth was not super tasty, kind of bland. The amount of meat you get is also kind of stingy. One time my dining companion got the three meats which you would think would be a lot more than just one meat, as it costs significantly more but they really didn't get much more. While it's not bad, it's just not amazing, especially when I know there's better a few miles down the road over in Albany. I also felt it was overpriced for what it was. The pho was great, the amount of noodles felt just a little bit small, but they were perfectly cooked and the broth was excellent. The food comes out decently quickly, it probably would have come out even faster but a couple other groups showed up at almost the same time and it was pretty late (almost 9). Since we were a group of four, we decided to try one of their rolls as well. The server suggested getting one with grilled meat since it had more flavor, which we did. Personally, I didn't really care for the roll too much; normally I have that kind of roll with a peanut sauce but the fish sauce it came with wasn't too bad. Then again, normally, I prefer my egg rolls fried and served with lettuce but sadly they did not offered a fried option. Since the roll costs almost as much as another boll, we'll probably pass on it in the future. The main disappointment was, as others have noted, the very small amount of things to add. Normally, pho is served with a large plate of beansprouts, lime, basil, and a few other odds and ends. They give you a tiny amount of beansprouts (about enough to fill a soy sauce dish), about one *leaf* of basil, and 1/8th of a lime. They also didn't have nearly enough Sriracha; I like having a bottle at my table and then adding enough to make mine a bright orange. Fortunately, we were a group of four and most of the other guys didn't need their vegetables so I ended up just using theirs; but, yes, they are quite stingy in that regard. The price was also just a little bit high, but it was to be expected. Most Pho restaurants are dumpy little places where you want to get out as soon as you're done. This was a cozy little place, well lit and very clean, and nice enough to make this a date night (there was more than one couple here). The pho was great though, and that's what matters. Although the roll wasn't as good I didn't mind since their very name should tell you that's not what they specialize in. A tip, find a place before or after the intersection to turn in, that light is red for a *very* long time. Been to lots of pho places in different cities/towns; almost always enjoyable except this time. Slow service not to mention they nickel and dime you on every little additional item to the pho. Skimpy with the bean sprouts and sauces. Those are easily overlooked, but the pho itself was flavorless. They tried to make up for this with extra black pepper in the soup-tasted like watered down chicken both. 5 minutes down Central is Vans, 10x better. To the north is Saigon Spring, also much better. It would be one thing League if this were the only spot in town, but there are much better alternatives. read more

Seeing I drive by Pho Yum everyday I finally decided to give it a try. Up until this point the only Pho I have eaten has been made by a friends mother. I decided on Pho with beef eye round. They have a few different meats you can add in (chicken, shrimp, beef brisket, tendon, etc..) and also have a vegetarian option that includes tofu and vegetables. The soup comes out in a huge bowl accompanied with a plate that includes bean sprouts, jalepenos, basil, lime, siaracha, and hoisin sauce. When it arrived the Pho was very hot and smelled delicious. One disappointment was there only being 4 very thin slices of eye round, but for only $1 extra I can not complain too much. The generous amount of noodles also made up for the lack of meat. Comapred to the other Pho I have had this seemed on par and the broth was very falvorful. The portion was enough to fill me up. Will be back to try some of the other items on the menu. read more

Small, homey, high quality food, reasonable prices. What's not to like? Their menu is not as expansive as other Vietnamese restaurants, but what they do carry, they execute very well. Service is attentive and reasonably quick. Pho is a la carte: you order the basic noodles/soup, then order the different meat additions separately. All in all, a welcome contender to the Pho scene in the Albany area, sure to keep the other Vietnamese restaurants honest! Also interesting to note: They serve Banh Mi (Vietnamese style sandwiches!). Hidden gem! Healed my unshakable chill with their spicy lemongrass Pho with beef brisket. You've probably driven by this place 1000 times because it's in one of the zillion forgettable strip malls of Central Ave. Went here on a whim because I was rushing between errands and saw the Subway next door so I pulled into the parking lot. I saw this place and thought I'd peek my head in to see if it was legit and the place seemed clean, cute, and smelled amazing so I stayed. Glad I did! Been back 2x. This is definitely my favorite new lunch spot. Tasty, quiet setting, big portions + budget pricing. One thing I would love to see is swap out paper cups for real ceramic. Went there for the first time tonight. We got there 30 min before closing then were totally confused how to order. You have to fill out a form? Eh? Anyway, we figured it out and gave the guy our order. Three soups and a rice dish. Then the guy says they ran out of rice. What? Yeah, like a couple hours ago. What?! Ugh. Anyway, make that three soups and a vermicelli dish. No rice at an Asian restaurant? Ok, so it was near closing time, but they ran out 2 hours ago? Bull. The broth was delicious. Seriously. Delicious. The noodles were al dente, just the way I like them. Beef brisket slices were tasty. And the soup was brought out piping hot and didn't cool down until I was done with the meal. Whew. We'd go back again for the pho, but we'd skip a few a things. Don't bother with 1) the iced tea (way too bitter and strong); 2) the "hot" green tea (lukewarm and weak from a tea bag); and 3) the bubble tea (the straws are too small to suck up the tapioca balls). Also, the restaurant was very warm and stuffy. Not the greatest if you're eating a hot bowl of soup to begin with. Walking from my parked car I noticed the seating was packed tables in what amounted to a large doctor's office reception room. I almost turned back and got into my car, but decided to brave the very non-private seating. Why do I have to almost whisper so that everyone in the restaurant can't hear me? Small rooms are very unforgiving with sound as the sound has no where to go and die or mix. They had music playing to add a little privacy like they do at bars, but it just wasn't enough. Luckily I was facing the window and didn't have to be subjected to the gaze of elevator style seating. The food tasted reasonably fresh if a little unsophisticated. Both of us ordered Pho with 1 beef selection and shared a summer roll. The portions were perfect for your typical 23 BMI customer and no dessert. The prices were certainly cheaper than a typical night out ($36 including tip) but since I'm a noob at eating Pho I can't compare price/quantity/quality to other experiences. The person I was with said she had eaten Pho before and told me it was overpriced for the quantity and quality. But it seemed OK to me at that price. I get the feeling this is more lunch type food. My waitress was a bit of an airhead and had to be reminded of several requests and orders. But she (asian) did her job with no attitude unlike so many American-born people even when they're screwing up their job. Good backup place to save some money when you pick up a blind date and realize she's ugly/avg and that $100 dinner at McGuire's or Taste isn't warranted. SMASHING ham I ordered the Classic ham banh mi sandwich and their Pho Yum. A little foggy on the exact contents of the sandwich but it was quite tasty and the bread was nice and crisp. Although I've had better pho, this restaurant served up a fairly decent version with bean sprouts, basil, Sriracha, and hoisin sauce. The meat and broth were fine, but the noodles were difficult to pick up with chopsticks and kept breaking. TT^TT The inside featured nice decor, but the temperature was too cold! My waiter brought out the food quickly, but tended to neglect me as more people sat down for dunch (dinner-lunch); understandable. Loved all of the branding on their chopsticks and to-go containers. In a nutshell, Pho Yum provided a good meal, but the pho recipe could be improved to have more flavor. read more

I love Vietnamese food and have eaten at dozens of Pho spots. This is probably the worst. Atnosphere is not good. The soup is bland and the noodle's texture is off. I was glad to see a Pho place open in the area and this one is quite good. I have been here about 4 times and have ordered the Pho Ga each time. This is my standard cool weather lunch choice at Vietnamese restaurants. the pho is very flavorful and has been served piping hot each time. Service has been attentive and reasonably quick. I find the prices a bit on the high side. Although the portions are large I have had very good pho, with larger servings, at lower prices at other locations - admittedly not in Albany. The absolute best Pho you'll have in the capital Region, spring rolls are just as amazing. Keep coming back at least once a week, everything is homemade including pho stock which they cook for 12 hours as the host told me. I had another good meal at Pho Yum. I started with a glass of their Vietnamese iced coffee, that is drip brewed over a glass. At the bottom of the glass is a thick layer of sweetened condensed milk. The taste of the coffee is very similar to espresso and it was a delicious and satisfying drink. I then had a vegetarian rice plate, which was chock full of veggies and tofu. My only complaint is that I wish they trimmed the ends off the snow peas and added a little more tofu, other than that it was very good. Came in for a quick lunch and was moderately satisfied with the pho and banh mi. Ordered the beef brisket pho and classic ham banh mi. Order was fast and service friendly. The pho itself was lacking the usual flavor I expect for my pho, a little too oily, a bit thin, and perhaps 3 very thin brisket. The sprouts were a bit on the sparse side and exactly two jalapeños, not that I expect great gobs of either, but expected a little more. The banh mi was standard fair, tasty without being overbearing in any one flavor - however the like with the pho, I expected a little more than two thin pieces of ham considering the up-charge for any meat you add to the pho or banh mi. A quick, but not cheap, lunch. Honestly if you want to have quality pho that may be a litle more in cost, but worth it, drive a little further into Albany and go to Van's. read more

Sriracha & hoisin sauces are not available on tables, they give you a measly amount in a tiny paper up. Service isn't very good. Our waitress took her lunch break while waiting on us.
