Happy to say this place offers halal meat options, which makes it one of the very very few Chinese restaurants in town where people who eat halal can go to! Just make sure to talk to them beforehand and they have a separate area in the back to avoid cross contamination! I've always enjoyed the food here, and the flavors have treated my palette pretty well! I like my food spicy so either request it when ordering or add hot oil and spices after it comes out lol. If you dine in they have tables with lazy susans -revolving food stands - for your convenience! Personally love them and feel like it's a nice touch to the restaurant. We frequently visited @phoenix_chinese_cafe prior to the pandemic. This is our first time to visit since it changed management. My husband and I both had unsweet tea. We were looking forward to having the Peking Duck 3 ways and was hoping it was as good as before. The 3 ways includes (1) primarily the skin with some meat into the bun with hoisin sauce and scallions, (2) soup with some duck meat, and (3) stir fried duck. Everything was very flavorful. Unfortunately, the hoisin sauce was a bit salty rather than sweet. We ordered the Shrimp with Walnuts, which was good. The Congee with Fish was for Dad but I think he enjoyed most of the other food and didn't have room for the congee. It's a very large bowl! My husband tried some and said it was tasty. Here is my decent review with a poorly taken picture attached. I meant to take another but after tasting my sweet and sour chicken I got a bit eager and just kept eating. This, along with the rice was quite good. The House Special Beef was lacking the glossy finish that you'd expect from a good stir fry and the beef was also missing the velveting on the meat so the texture was also not what was expected. I have tasted the Kim wah restaurant Peking duck ( closed) .And for all I know this restaurant is the same owner of latter restaurant. There is a big difference with the way it was cooked . Improve the service and quality of the food. We had ordered the whole steamed fish and was served with steamed fish fillets. The problem was that we had asked if the whole fish was available and the server went into the kitchen and returned assuring that the whole fish was available. We had crispy duck, the skin was crispy and the meat tender, mapu tofu was well seasoned, the congee chicken mushroom was on point, it's a soup with rice, chicken and mushroom, this what they serve as breakfast in China. We went here today for lunch. There was only one other table for 2 there already eating. The young man waiting on us seemed very annoyed, but not rude so that was ok. My family and I all ordered different lunch specials. Mine, was the #2 or #3 Happy Family. The soup was ok. When my food came, it was a mix of chicken and shrimp with vegetables. My husband had the spicy Chicken, shrimp and pork. His had smaller shrimp, different from mine. My son had Sesame chicken. When I went to try mine....I noticed it had a funny, rank smell. It was the shrimp. It was spoiled and expired. My husbands did not smell the same. (Smaller shrimp) I smelled the chicken and in my dish and it didn't have the same smell, but I was then apprehensive to consume the dish as it was all cooked together. I ate none of it. The server brought our bill. We had notified him of the issue as my husband had taken all the shrimp out and put it in a different bowl. The server left and told the owner or manager and they just offered me more shrimp. My husband finished his meal. He went to pay and asked were they going to discount or remove the meal. He told them we didn't come in here to get free food, I didn't even eat it . The owner said no as it's already in the system. He said she didn't ask for anything else. (They didn't offer anything else just replacement shrimp & never returned to our table) My husband explained I didn't eat it and this is someone's food. The shrimp was spoiled. They did not care. "Authentic" is relative. That's when the San Antonio standards come into play. I wouldn't say Phoenix's Chinese offerings are very authentic but I was certainly very satisfied on my second visit today. I first came to Phoenix at the beginning of 2013 before I relocated to SA. I ordered a noodle soup off the Chinese menu. It was OK, more like a 3 star. The portion was small for the price I paid. Also Phoenix is Cantonese style Chinese which is very different from what I am accustomed to eating growing up aka Beijing or northern style Chinese. Since I moved to SA, I have been reluctant to return to Phoenix. However because of a recent disappointing visit to Tang St, I decided to give Phoenix a second chance. I recommended this place to our Chinese professors' lunch club get together at work. Yea it is called the Joy Luck lunch club, J/K. Upon arrival, we got two pot of complimentary hot tea which is a plus. The owner/server only speaks Cantonese so I basically communicated with her in English. But I think she can understand mandarin. Three of us ordered the beef stew on rice and the other two ppl ordered beef stew noodle soup, all from the Chinese menu. My expectations were low but when I got my plate I was deff pleasantly surprised. First of all, the portion was big! I didn't even finish. Secondly, it was actually quite tasty! The beef was flavorful and very tender. They used Chinese broccoli instead of the American kind for this dish which is awesome in my book. I will take Chinese broccoli over the American one any day! The rice was decent too. Three of our group are originally from northern China and two are from southern China. Everyone all said their dishes were decent. Great neighborhood place for good, authentic Cantonese Chinese style meals. They also have dimsum you can order a la carte from the menu. I enjoy trying the classic bok choy with mushrooms, snow pea leaves, Corn Fried Fish, small clay pot items, walnut shrimp, HK style sweet and sour pork and many other items on the menu. Try the seafood crispy noodles! That's one of my favorites. Everything usually tastes fresh and good. You won't easily get the same level of food from other places in town. As for prices, regular entrees family style are about $8-13 depending on if you order seafood. I know they have regular lunch specials during the weekday, but it's definitely a better treat on weekends or evenings with their authentic chinese menu. Service is usually pretty good, with staff coming to provide drinks and take your order pretty quickly. You can pay at the front cashier desk when you are done, or at your table. It's nice to have both options. They also have a a few large tables in the back, which is good for family gatherings. The reason I gave four instead of five stars is because although I've eaten here for over 10 years, the quality of the food varies slightly. Personally, I think the customer service is fine, but I could see it being seen as rude or inattentive. It's typical for Chinese restaurants to not hang on your shoulder when you eat and ask many times if your food is good, etc. There may be times that you are forgotten, but a wave usually sends a waiter/waitress over - the gain is that you get some space with your colleagues and are't constantly harassed with a bunch of questions between food bites. Recall that this restaurant should be treated like a basic eating establishment, not a Michelin Five Star Restaurant. Otherwise, you will be very disappointed. read more
