    The Phoenix Grinder
    Alicia N.

This is my 2nd time ordering my GF pizza from here and its very very good. GF pizza can be a hit or miss but this one was perfect, its just cheesy and full of flavor. yup. I ate it all!! I ordered a grinder for my dad , his grinder had nice piece of chicken cutlet in there with ham, lettuce, tomato and sauce . He was satisfied with it and also enjoyed the complimentary slice of buffalo chicken pizza. it has the perfect amount of toppings on the pizza also. For Mondays, cant beat the Monday deals by the way. The. slices are huge and I heard those garlic knots are addicting!! Family/ owner that works at the pizzeria are all so friendly and nice! Also, they offer apps, wraps, grinders, salads, pizza, Stromboli's, wings , and calzones. phoenix Pizza is a great place to order take out from and get good slice of pizza!

This spot has been a rotating pizza place since we moved to Newington and we're glad that they've moved in! Some great NY style pizza with huge slices and delicious pizzas. This is our go to spot and their service is great. Everything is priced well. The crust is thin and crispy with a lot of different combinations of toppings. Margherita (classic) - Everything you're looking for in the classic pizza. Gooey cheese with the classic flavors. Phonenix Special (onions, peppers, mushrooms, pepperoni, hamburger) - A fantastic variety of vegetables and meat. Together, the combo works well but the hamburger was unseasoned by itself. Melanzana (White pizza with eggplant, spinach, ricotta) - Crispy breaded thin eggplant slices. (One of my favorites). Bacon Mashed Potatoes - had lots of great bite sized bacon pieces, I personally would pass on the mashed potatoes (too mushy for me to put on pizza). Tomato Basil (Basil tomatoes, garlic, shredded mozzarella, olive oil) - similar to the margherita but less saucy and more tomato!

So here I am, reviewing a new pizza place, in the Center of Newington, next to the Starbucks. Bobby D. is one of the first reviewers. Doesn't feel familiar at all. Wink emoji. Phoenix Pizzeria opened about two weeks ago. The immediate prior pizza place didn't last very long there at all. Pizza is dead. Long live pizza, I guess. I'm always curious about the new pizza places that open in this space and I have to say that I think Phoenix is one of the more promising ones. I visited to give Phoenix my slice test, and they had numerous pizzas by the slice that included Buffalo Chicken, Chicken Ranch, Thick Sicilian with just sauce and cheese, Meat Lovers and what I ordered -- the House Special. I was impressed with the House Special with sliced sausage, spinach, mozzarella and the star of the show for me, a very spicy pizza sauce. The sauce had an arrabbiata vibe and I thought it was great. I couldn't tell if the sausage was also hot, but I liked the overall flavor. The crust was thin and well managed. I know that's welcome news for the people always searching for area thin crust spots. Service was friendly. When I said it was my first time, the person who seemed like an owner offered two tasty garlic knots. I can't remember giving a pizza place Five Stars based on a slice, but I'm doing it for Phoenix. It was an original take on a sausage and spinach slice and I'm looking forward to trying more.

We stopped by chance as we went to Starbucks next door and we were really hungry. Picked up an order of garlic knots and didn't even have to wait. Very nice folks crew working there and yummy knots.

Picture perfect and the taste to match. High quality ingredients and an expert pizza maker equates to a perfect balance of sauce and cheese atop an outstanding crust. Nicely crisp and flop free. I've already been 4 times and I'm not done yet

Great pizza! Delicious thin crust and tasty sauce. Toppings have always been fresh and the slices are huge! My favorites are the buffalo chicken, chicken bacon ranch, and Sicilian. Definitely will be going back a lot for slices and full pies!

Love the huge slices of pizza here. After eating two slices, I was stuffed for the entire day. Each slice was around $3 or $4 each. I loved the creativity and variety offered with each pizza. Hope this place sticks around, it tends to change its name and shut down a lot..

Phoenix pizza is amazing with flavor, has a great crunch and an excellent yum factor! The ordering is super easy and was ready on arrival for pick up. Very nice place easily located with a clean and presentable atmosphere. Will definitely return

First go was a success! Loved seeing this place was so close! We ordered some wangs, knots and half and half pie.. all were very good.. the crust was a tiny bit thick and chewy and it worked well! The flavor was spot on! I love the menu options and had a hard time making a choice which is always a good problem lol.. I'm eager to try again and work my way through the menu!

In the mood for pizza and decided to try this new place. We ordered a sausage mushroom onion and a pepperoni mushroom plus some garlic knots. The pizza was a thin crust with tasty toppings and a nice crust. I do wish there was some more sauce but otherwise we really loved it. The garlic knots were perfect and we enjoyed them all weekend especially with some homemade soup, there were plenty to go around. This is a great pizza spot the employees are very friendly and accommodating. I got the sense it was a family run business and we love supporting these kind of spots. Give a try you won't be disappointed!

I decided to start with the apple salad, which was huge! It was crispy, crunchy, and had just the right mix of ingredients. My husband ordered a small (12in) cheese pizza, and I decided to go with a small (12in) vodka pizza. I love vodka sauce but had never tried it on a pie before, man was it delicious!- Chef's kiss! My husband really enjoyed his traditional cheese pizza as well! It was great to find a new haven style pizza joint further into the state. They also serve Detroit style pizza which I'd be interested in trying next time. The only downside was not having room to try the italian ricotta donuts that look and sound amazing (which JG doesn't start serving till 5pm). I guess that means we'll just have to go back! 10 out of 10 for JG, we shall return!

We had the Chicken Joey which was so flavorful. The risotto was outstanding, so creamy and delicious. And the broccoli was tasty, covered in chopped garlic. We also had their new promotion of chicken cutlet meals - Brooklyn chicken which was a mild impression of Parmesan, but less sauce, and fresh mozzarella on top. And, a very strong taste of garlic, to be expected. The atmosphere is pleasant and we had a friendly and attentive wait staff.

We ordered the triple appetizer, and the kitchen gave us chicken tenders instead of the arancini that we ordered, so they gave it to us on the house. The servers were attentive and kind, and quick to fix our order. - Arancini, (4.25/5): I've never cared for Arancini but this changed my mind- the ball was perfectly cwisp and fried, with a not toooo mushy cheesy center - Calamari, (4.5/5): so good! I wanted to give them a second chance. Sometimes businesses have bad days and I don't like to judge based off of one experience unless it's super bad. Well, this time was worse. Ordered the chopped salad. All you could taste was dressing and it was soggy and swimming. Barely any meat. Then the pizza came. One half had pepperoni and hot honey and the other had meatball and ricotta. The pepperoni side was literally disgusting. Like the salad, it was completely drenched in hot honey and sickly sweet. It was pooling on my plate. You couldn't taste the sauce, cheese, and toppings. Speaking of the sauce, there was little to none, had no flavor, and it was canned. I know canned sauce when I taste it. This was especially shocking because Sally's is known for their sauce. I'm very disappointed because I usually love the sauce at Sally's l, but this wasn't it. And then there's another problem: the pizza came out burnt and cold. New Haven style is slightly charred, not BURNT. It wasn't just the crust; it was also the undercarriage. See the photos I attached. It also took 50 minutes from the time our order was placed to get our one pizza when the restaurant wasn't even at half occupancy. Service was terrible!! We weren't even offered red pepper or parm with our pizza and weren't asked if we wanted dessert. Not like we wanted to stay after that mess, but it would've been nice to be asked. Our server was never near our table and it took a long time to get the things we wanted. We felt completely ignored all night. I feel like this is totally understandable on a busy night, but the place wasn't packed by any means and there were only a few tables occupied. We had to wait an extra 20 minutes after we finished our pizza before our server came around again and just handed us the check and walked away without a word. Not coming back.

To me it almost tastes like a clam pasta on a pizza. It's basically just what the name implies. I wouldn't go out of my way to get it again but the tomato pie was great. Our service was stellar. I'm conflicted on this 2/5 rating since I wish there was a 2.5/5 option here. There are some promising things about Frank Pepe's: a coal-fired oven, photos of the same white clam pizza I ordered that look more like pizzas I had in Italy than the one I got, and other options for toppings that might work out better. Perhaps asking for light garlic and maybe the addition of the calabrian chilies from the seasonal special pizza (or pickled jalapeños, if available) would've fixed the balance (and topping palatability) of this pizza. A different pizza also may be substantially tastier, but goshdarnit, we're close enough to the ocean that I'd like to think the white clam is a slam-dunk. It's even listed in neon in the window! As ordered, unchanged, off the menu, though, I feel like I need to leave this state for a pizza just to feel something. Connecticut calling itself "the pizza state" has thus far been a lie; a cruel joke wherein a few outstanding outliers try to gloss over the fact that most of the state's pizza is mid-to-bad. "Mystic Pizza" being one of the state's most famous audiovisual exports sort of fits given that the availability of standout pizza here appears to be a mystical unicorn I've yet to find after moving here last year. Pepe's gets serious props for using large chunks of clams that don't look like the typical, uniformly cut, restaurant-supply-can chunks, but they were a bit rubbery and almost completely drowned out by the amount of garlic. It's like they were cooked too long, and the moisture from the clams evaporated accordingly. The crust had a little crunch to it as well, but lacked the crispy bubbles and heavier charred spots I expect from this style of pizza and from the assorted menu photos. Either go foldable or go harder on the fire--anywhere in between lands in disappointment territory. Commit to a bit. $8 a pint is a bit much for basic beer selections like Sam Adams and Peroni, too, but that's sort of my least concern. We live in Hell where everything is expensive lately, and at least beer prices haven't shot up as badly as gas prices. I probably should've ordered the sangria in hindsight. White peach? Here for it. Also, the staff was friendly, and service was prompt. I really should give it a second chance with a more traditional tomato-sauce pizza, or maybe a margherita. If you go, expect it to fall short of the hype unless whoever made the nicely bubbly white clam pie in the photos posted here is manning the oven. Unless you like garlic as much as I like cheese, consider asking to go light on the garlic for a better-balanced pizza if you order this one.
