Definitely a Newington staple! Finally checked this place out for our go to pizza topping- buffalo chicken! Immediately ordering on the phone staff was super nice and friendly. Once we picked up the pizza my husband kept saying how nice they were there! When we took our pizza home we were super impressed and loved our pizza! They serve pan pizzas here so their crust is super unique and flavorful. The Buffalo chicken is one of the best I've had. Amazing flavor! I think it's fair to say that Elm Hill Pizza is a Newington institution. I live closer to other places that I like, but I still make sure I get to Elm Hill a few times a year for their reliably good pizza and grinders. For people of a certain age and place, can you even hear the word "calzone" without thinking of fake George Steinbrenner stalking Seinfeld's George Costanza through the New York Yankee offices for his lunch calzone? I know I can't. Today, I ordered my first calzone in a while - a pepperoni, onion and green pepper calzone from Elm Hill. I phoned in my order and it was ready on time. Elm Hill is small and the inside is functional, but there are a few tables if you'd like to dine in during off-peak times. If you were to try that around dinner, you might see that Elm Hill can get crowded with takeout customers and the dining room may feel a bit cramped. I normally get takeout. The calzone was huge and looked great. It was the folded over and press-sealed variety of calzone. The top was vented and you could see the oozy mozzarella peaking through. The top was also partially coated with little cheese crisp strands. A welcome sight. A calzone is not a go to order for me, but it does have some natural advantages over pizza. Most importantly for me, calzones allow for total sauce control. Ever get a pizza lacking in sauce? Not a problem with a calzone. Dip away. Calzones also stay warm longer than pizzas since they're double-crust insulated. Elm Hill's calzone was very good. The crust was well done and had good texture. The mozzarella and ricotta cheese were both tasty. The pepperoni, peppers and onions were well cooked and delicious. It was just a solid calzone in every way. The marinara dipping sauce was decent, but not my favorite. There are a zillion ways to make sauce and you can't please everybody. For me, Elm Hill's sauce was a little too sweet, not quite salty enough and lacking in the Italian herb (oregano, etc.) flavor that I like. But again, the calzone itself was very good and Elm Hill's sauce may connect with people with different sauce preferences than I have. This small pizza place has been in the neighborhood for years and I was able to get a pizza there recently. I want to call them and tell them that I enjoyed their pizza so much and I have been missing out because I used to get their pizza when my Mom worked down the street. She would bring it home on Friday night because we had our Friday night dinner and watched our favorite shows. The crust is so delicious and cooked perfectly. The sauce is the best I have had around this area. Just made so well not over seasoned and just delicious. The toppings were the way I asked with red roasted peppers and mozzarella cheese was great. We went to Elm Hill Pizza because we seen on yelp that they had good reviews when we got there we had a good impression the seating was clean and they had nice decoration although we start getting a little bit disappointed once the pizza was taking about 30 minutes to be done because according to them the wings we ordered needed new oil in the fryer. When we got the pizza and wings we were even more disappointed to see the pizza was insanely greasy and it wasn't even warm anymore. The wings were only ok. The woman who made our pizza did not apologize for the wait and it seems like she created an excuse about why our food took so long to prepare. Greek Pizza is cooked in a pan with a Cheesy Top & Crispy & Chewy crust. It tastes fantastic when you put Italian Sausage, Pepperoni, and any combination of olives, onions, peppers for a perfect balance flavor. The old school hamburger & onion & garlic is great ! The first time I went to Elm Hill, I saw the rating and called up hankering for some pizza to throw down. The phone line was choppy and customer service was kind of iffy at best but I had my order in and banked on it being good. It took a while to make the pizza so I had some stand around time. Brought the box into the car, mildly annoyed, and peered in-- instantly forgiven. The pizza was stupid good. I have since gone back and it was a better experience, but pizza continued its amazing greasy quality. So I know what I want/ know what should be in a pizza. And Elm Hill Special pizza, it was...okay. It had a crispy crust but to be honest, it was lacking cheese! It was really saucy, meaning it had a greater ratio of pizza sauce than cheese.
