On a weekend night, people were rotating in and out of Phonobar. I checked out this bar with friends and really enjoyed the overall vibe. The space is dimly lit and cozy, with music and noise at a volume suitable for conversations. I tried two drinks: a chai drink and a drink akin to a strawberry negroni. The strawberry negroni leaned pretty strong on the bitter side and would be a great drink for more classic negroni fans. On the otehr hand, the chai drink was unique with its warm chai tea, spiced agave syrup, and reposado tequila. It was unlike any cocktail I've tried before! Overall, this was a great spot for a chill night out with friends, especially for trying creative cocktails in a more relaxed atmosphere. read more

Some friends and I had a couple of drinks after the symphony at this bar. I gave them my credit card to pay and they told my friend that it wasn't working and asked for her card instead. Well, they ended up charging both of our cards. Mistakes happen, and I'm fine with giving businesses the benefit of the doubt, but I've tried calling them and messaging them on their instagram handle and they do not respond. It's one thing to make a mistake, it's another to ignore a customer when you've double charged them. Great cocktails and beer serving vegan food. It's a nicely lit bar that can set the mood for date night or a nice Yap session with your friends after a espresso martini or a great glass of wine. The food is delicious and I would definitely recommend. I love the tacos on the menu. They have great seating inside and in the back of the bar they have music and additional seating. I had an amazing time at phonobar! We came on a Thursday at 8 PM to celebrate my birthday with a few friends. I was pleasantly surprised that it was nearly empty, and the servers were extremely attentive! The drinks were fantastic and came out swiftly. I'd recommend the summer summer summertime. The food was also delicious and 100% VEGAN!!! I sampled the truffle mac & cheese, the calamari, and the teriyaki. All of them were delicious, and could fool even the most carnivorous person. The lavender Bundt cake was the best way to end the night. The DJ set didn't start until around 10, after which it became a lot harder to talk over the music. I'd like to come back and experience the audiophile aspect of the bar! read more

Great spot, especially before a show at Bill Graham! I visited for the second time a couple weeks ago before a show. I love their menu, especially with everything being vegan/vegetarian. I highly recommend their hibiscus tacos. Other than hibiscus tea, I've never otherwise been exposed to hibiscus as a food. These were fantastic. It had a great texture and was super flavorful. Their fries were also great! My next recommendation would also be the flautas! Nice crispy outside with the soy chorizo on the inside. As for drinks, I cannot remember what I grabbed but both were delicious. For what it is, I think the prices are very reasonable, especially being vegan/vegetarian in the city. If you're vegan, this is your jam! All food options are vegan. Prices are reasonable. I got the "clam chowder" made with mushrooms. Wasn't too impressed honestly. I'd prefer true clam chowder. A glass of wine is $17 and a mixed drink is $18. They have a lounge section in the back when a live DJ shows up. I was pleasantly surprised by this. Service was great! Gabriel was very informative. Stopped by for a drink before going to dinner and the outside definitely doesn't match the inside. The place is very cute with a nice long bar on the left and high to tables on the right. Since we were only doing drinks we sat at the bar and ordered a couple drinks. The very nice bartender answered our questions about the menu and promptly served us our drinks. The staff even grabbed us an extra chair for our large party. 4/5 Hotter than hell - advertised as spicy and it definitely was. The new owner Henry has the worst attitude toward customers of anyone I've ever met. It's like he wants to scare customers off so they won't annoy him again. Any random trivial interaction has the chance of setting him off. I've heard some of there are a couple other people on staff with comparable attitudes but have not interacted with them myself. I would not come here at the risk that you have to interact with Henry (although he seems to try to act like a sweetheart to women). I almost never deduct even one star for bad service, but this has got to be the exception. Vegan places seem to be on the decline, so if you need vegan food and you're nearby, you might have an ok experience, but that's the only reason I can imagine coming to this place. read more

Just had a terrible experience w ONE bartender (the rest were fantastic), the man with glasses, short sleeve button down and tattoos was incredibly rude to me and my friends. When I tried to grab a straw he yelled at me, when she separately, ordered a strawberry margarita he flat out said no and she had to call him back and ask for a regular margarita instead. In my first visit I assumed I had arrived at Teakwood, which is across the street, but realized pretty quick this wasn't a Burmese restaurant. What was appealing about Phonobar is its not a big place and the layout is a low ceiling with windows that run along the length of the place with high top tables that that allows for people watching both walking along the street and at the bar. The bar area and liquor display is nicely diplayed and emotes a great juxtaposition between the bar and the seating area. What makes Phonobar so great, imho, is that its a vegetarian bar / restaurant. I found their whole menu very inviting and all the vegearian dishes I tried were 5 stars. The HIBISCUS FLOWER TACOS was so good and filling! The caramelized onions were so tasty. The Slider A La Mexiacana is a must! You couldn't tell it was a vegetarian sandwhich. I would also recommend their version of the Carne Asada tacos tasted just like the beef version. There are so many other tasty options on the menu, I look forward to coming here again for either food and/or drinks. read more

We stopped by back in November for a drink before a play and realized they served vegan/vegetarian food so we decided to try a couple of apps. We had the "crab" Arancini and the Elote. Both were very tasty and since I didn't know it was a vegan restaurant at first I would have never known. Fantastic! I walked away wanting to try more vegan dishes. The arancini was made with Arborio Rice, Lemon Garlic Jackfruit, Guajillo Muhammara and Roasted Oyster Mushrooms. If memory serves me the Elote was a "cheese" dip since I didn't take notes I'm not positive and it was not on the menu I ended up finding. I would love to return and try some more dishes so I went to their website to see what tasty treats I could try next and found Phonobar's website is terrible. It is three blocks, Events, Info and Gallery and a blank square where they need to put the menu. I did find a menu of sorts buried in the Info block, in a pdf but it didn't appear to be a vegan restaurant since Lamb was listed, very confusing. This was not the menu we saw. I did find pix's of menus on google that were blurry and too hard to read but after some poking around I found out the food is by Om Sabor so go to https://omsabor.com/ or more specifically https://omsabor.com/phonobar-x-om-sabor-menu/ to see the menu. Vegan latin restaurant and bar. We needed a stop to eat and pace ourselves while bar hopping downtown and we decided on this one to eat at. I was surprised we didn't need a reservation on a Saturday night. Walk-ins were welcomed and immediately seated. Staff was busy so service was slow, food was good, and drinks were creative. This place is kind of painfully cool, but enjoyable. It's got a very slick, dark interior. We got there at 7 on a Friday night and we found a table in the back. The seating is open and the servers come to you. I'm an omnivore, but was impressed by the big vegan menu. The (soy) Carne Asada Nachos are loaded and delicious. The Parmesan Herbed Fries (coconut cheese what?) were pretty standard, but the aioli side did a lot of work. The soy chicken Enchiladas Rojas are served on a bed of Mexican rice in a sizzling platter; the portion is a little small, but it was yummy. Overall the food is solid. We got a carafe of Forget Me Nots and it was a GREAT choice for the three of us. It was about 5-6 glasses of goodness. It's like a riff on a margarita, but with a spicy Tanteo Chipotle Tequila and pomegranate. The other cocktails look promising! read more

SF really needs more places like Phonobar. The combination of quality drinks and incredible vegan food basically is non-existent here. Phonobar is a relatively small space, but extremely easy to get to walking, biking, or by transit. The bar staff and restaurant staff (a la Om Sabor) are equally friendly and helpful. Whether you are a beer or cocktail person they have you covered. My partner and I are mostly divided between the two camps, but coming here means we both enjoy a very tasty bev. As for the food, I have previously reviewed Om Sabor on their separate yelp page so I won't get too deep in the details. Their menu changes regularly but is heavily latin-influenced with a little bit of soul food thrown in for good measure. I haven't had a single thing I didn't love. FYI they don't take reservations, and can it get pretty lively on weekends, but people move in and out fairly quickly so you shouldn't have to wait too long. read more

First time here! After enjoying the Harry Potter Symphony, we were hungry and stopped at this spot. We realized after we had sat down that it was a vegan restaurant so we decided to give it a try. I'm not opposed to different foods. I was pleasantly surprised. I tried the corn kale salad, the truffle Mac n cheese and the slider a la mexicana. I drank the passion fruit lemonade and it was so perfect! Last but not least, I had to try dessert, I tried the peaches and cream pastelito. The best! It was flakey, sweet, and creamy. It was served with a side of vanilla ice cream. I would eat it again. I recommend it, highly. It is a bit expensive because of all the taxes and fees (SF) but it was well worth it. This place was somewhere I really wanted to enjoy. Heard good things and wanted to give it a try. Let me preface that this is 100% indicative of the horrible waitress service we received. The bussers and other staff were great. The food (as a carnivore) was actually not bad with it being vegan. Our server must've had a bad day, because we really got off on the wrong foot from the start. She had a really bad attitude when we would ask questions regarding the happy hour menu. She seemed to get really triggered when I asked what would qualify as a "classic cocktail". For context those were the only ones that received the happy hour pricing, which is totally fine. But she literally rolled her eyes at me and was short when I asked (out of curiosity) what would qualify and IF there was a list and I was told "there's too many to list" with a high level of sass and attitude. That was how our service began. Whenever we asked to order more, she seemed like she really didn't want to be bothered. Happy hour starts at 5, I'm sorry to the server who may have had a bad day but there was no need to be rude. Then when we got the bill, we noticed we were charged for things that we didn't realize were up-charges, such as simple things like aioli for the fries, avocado for the Korean style tacos, changing a margarita to a mezcal margarita. It really hurts the customer experience when there's no transparency on what is or isn't part of a happy hour menu or may or may not be an up-charge. Not mentioned on the menu (not her fault). But not letting that be known to the customer? Not great. What made matters even more interesting, she had a very apparent rise in energy and cheerful vibe about her when it came time to us having to pay and leave. I truly have no clue what we could've possibly be done to receive such service or what happened prior to her shift. Either fake it til you make it or call out. I know it can be tough to do customer service, done it all my career, but man...very disappointing. All in all, if you're a vegan, the food isn't bad. The happy hour only includes classic cocktails, and I hope you get better customer service than we received. The food/drinks can be what gets a customer in a door, but the service is what makes someone want to come back or not. read more

Honestly worst bar experience ever in SF. I waited almost 45 minutes for my drinks and had to ask the servers multiple times to no avail. When I received my bill, I noticed they double charged me for a drink. When I brought it up to a manager they were very reluctant to remove the drink from my bill because they "didn't believe me". Strange experience overall, the food & drinks were not good enough to excuse the weird attitude of the server. We needed an extra chair for our group. We asked a nice table nearby for their unused chair, and when my friend sat down the server came in and said "you can't just take that without asking!" And basically grabbed the chair from under him. Now here's where I messed up - I'm new to bar culture and i brought in an outside (alcoholic) drink. I had no idea that was against the rules, so that was actually my bad. The server saw it, confiscated it, and then cut us off in a really belittling way. We understood we disrespected them by doing this so we didn't fight it. While I was signing the check he was hovering around us and staring, kinda like he was making sure I was still gonna tip. It was overall very uncomfortable. The reason I'm leaving this review is when we got up to leave, I went to him to say sorry and he straight-up mocked it back to me. Super weird when I feel like we didn't do enough to warrant that response and had been compliant with them all night. Don't go here, the vibes are off & there are better vegetarian spots. BE VARY CAREFUL ABOUT THIS PLACE--THEY MAY TAKE MORE THAN YOU ACTUALLY TIP ON YOUR CARD! The service wasn't that great--among other things, the waiter didn't know what was in the dishes (we had dietary restrictions among our group), and he didn't bother to check when we asked him about it, so he ended up giving us inaccurate information. I gave the waiter a 15% tip (custom). I guess he decided he was worth more than that; when I looked at my bank account, I found he'd given himself a 20% tip. We stopped by this bar because there was room for our big group. The server at the front wasn't super friendly but it's understandable to be stressful with seating that many people at once. We hovered around the standing tables that we were told not to move closer to each other and weren't offered any extra chairs. Honestly it didn't feel like they wanted us there. We got our drink orders in and stayed until they turned the lights on and told us we had 10 minutes. Maybe I haven't been to a bar in SF in awhile but it was an interesting experience. The location is right on Hayes Valley, a central area for artistic and musical flair in San Francisco. Inside feels upbeat and electric with a welcoming atmosphere filled with friendly staff. It has a lively and hip ambiance. There is a dark room indoors in the back with music or live performances. Inside has large windows that can be opened for fresh air and it brings in bright, natural light without the sun interfering. There is single seating available in a row at the bar area. There is a patio area outside for larger gatherings. Phonobar x Om Sabor is a great place to bring family, friends, and coworkers to casually hangout and is great for large groups. This is my favorite place in the city to eat vegan good and hangout with a group of friends. My favorite things here are the carne asada tacos and mac n cheese croquettes. The tacos taste smokey and I like the spicy red sauce that comes with it. The mac n cheese croquettes are to die for and they are so cheesy and crispy with every bite. I also recommend trying the chikn' paella valenciana, which tastes savory and flavorful. I love the dia de los muertos punch mocktail and it was hibiscus tea fruity and cinnamon sweet. My neighbor and I went there after Shen Yun performance over the weekend. It was not an outdoor bar, but I felt comfortable as it was not too crowded. Every table had a sanitizer. This bar mixes some great cocktails and provides a cozy but hip setting with upbeat electronic music, so it's a get place to come on a date or small group of friends. I come here approximately once every season, so it's nice to try their seasonal cocktails. Depending on what DJs they get, there can potentially be a cover to pay at the door on a weekend night, so be aware of that. Rates can typically be $10-20 which seems like a lot of the size of the place, but also makes sense for crowd control. I'm not sure what this place was before, or if there was even a before for Phonobar, they had the pop-up Om Sabor serving vegan food, but it was a worthwhile addition! The cuisine leans Mexican-style but they also serve some other staples like Caesar salad and a cheese plate for sharing. Everything is labeled on their menu for those with additional dietary restrictions. If you're coming for Mexican, I recommend checking them out on Taco Tuesday for a 3 taco deal! read more

The indoor space is very nice - there is the main bar area which is a little cramped but general all has good seating, but the internal area has a nice stage area for musical performances. The food service was okay, they forgot who ordered what even when only 1 or 2 people would order. I would describe the service as enough to satisfy a customer. When it comes to pure bar service, it's solid, but when it comes to general restaurant service I would recommend trying other places. However, I would emphasize that the food and drinks are pretty good. If the bar improves the food service such that it's as good as the bar then I will definitely increase my rating! read more

Had a lovely solo night at phono bar Sat night. Dropped by for one on my way home from the Makeout room. Stayed for several. Friendly crowd, just the right amount of people to make it social and possible to chat to strangers.
