Trick Dog was ranked #100 on 2026 North America's 50 Best Bars. We liked it here so much we came back twice during our trip in SF. For drinks we ordered the Oaxacan Carnival, SoMa, Urban Canine and Trick Dog. My favorite was the Oaxacan cocktail, and it's what I got again when we came back the second time. For food we ordered bao buns, french fries, cauliflower, and the trick nuggets. The nuggets were so good and crispy I ordered them again when we came back. The only downside is the space is a bit small and it can get crowded. The service was also slow at times and was difficult to get the attention of the bartenders, but the drinks and food made up for it. And even though it was crowded, it felt fun and I loved the music they were playing. We wanted to catch up with some friends over a drink, and the music was blasting so loud at 8pm we couldn't hear one another at all. We made a reservation in advance and that got us seated upstairs, where you can also dine but it's fine to only order drinks. The bar is downstairs and you walk through it and up the stairs to get to the upstairs dining area. The restrooms are back downstairs so keep that in mind. At the door, you show your ID before you enter. The server was really helpful and friendly. We perused the menu, which was a book of photographs, with great descriptions of the drinks and the photos of San Francisco culture. It was hard to choose only one drink because they all had interesting ingredients. The ice in my drink had words inscribed in it. That was really cool (literally); I've never seen that effect before in a cocktail. The drinks were nice and if you don't want a cocktail, they also have root beer, beer and wine. I used to love this spot, I've enjoyed my cocktails although they are $20. The service is just awful. Waited ~20 minutes while the bartender looked through me as if I was an invisible. Ordered my drink and I tried to also ask for fries. As I said, may I also get some fr-- the bartender held up 2 fingers cutting me off and said "I'm not taking any more orders right now" and then took someone else's drink order. It was wild. Absolutely love the creativity and energy behind this bar. Trick dog changes up their menu every half year, and they go all out with the concept. I went recently and the theme is Meet Me in the City (photography + cocktails) and I felt like I was perusing a photography book when looking at the menu. Pictured below was their circus theme from last year. There's always a cocktail or two that I like, and they have a good range from classics to creative twists. The chicken nuggets are also delicious lol. There are two floors in this bar, with a chill dining area on top and more of a normal bar / loud music scenario on the bottom. Trick dog is a great local bar especially for after work drinks. I can't speak too much to the cocktails but I've gotten wine and beer here. This time tried the pickle beer, I love pickles so this one wa really interesting. They also have a selection of food which is great, all their sandwiches are on hot dog buns so it's kinda funny! But this place is definitely on the pricier side. It's also pretty frequently super packed at times I can't really stay long because people are legit shoulder to shoulder. I mean no fault of the bars that just shows it's popular but definitely not a place to chill and chat since it's so busy. read more

After hearing so many rave reviews of this place, I'm truly disappointed with my experience. I love the quirky menus and the neighborhood the restaurant sits in. But where Trick Dog fell flat for me, was the service. It was extremely hard to order as the bar gets very rowdy and bartenders take their time making drinks. I'm especially disappointed that the bartender failed to mention that one of our drinks was non-alcoholic. It was in the fine print of the menu, and I only noticed when I went back to admire how beautiful the menu was. My crew and I wanted to find a bar nearby and I found Trick Dog open until 2AM! Their kitchen was still open until midnight so we wanted to grab food as well! It's almost like a club but a bar too. The music they were playing 11/29 was popping with a lot of throwbacks (Alice Deejay, Venga Boys). The bar is pretty intimate and not really good for groups but lucky we were only a group of 3 and found space at the bar. The drinks are super unique (see photo). Not overly sweet and the alcohol isn't too harsh. Once midnight hit, the bar announced it was one of the bartender's birthdays! Pacho?? So wholesome to see the workers announce this and the whole bar sang happy birthday to him. What a cool community Trick Dog has created! Trick Dog actually changes the entire menu theme every few months, which is both impressive and dangerous for my wallet. Everything was delicious. Reviewing Tricks Dog's AAPI Cocktail Week event: Asian Invasion Arrived about 20 min after the start of event (6:20pm) and had to wait in line for about 15 min outside the venue. Staff were super friendly and explained they wanted to make sure bartenders weren't overwhelmed by crowds. Once we were inside it was definitely full, but we were able to get our drinks within 10-15 min. The menu for AAPI cocktail week was fun, filled with unique drinks from guest bartenders and we were tempted to try them all! Highlights from the night included Manila gold (whiskey, mango, vanilla and calamansi) as well as the salted plum highball (gin and salty plum soda). The food menu was from All Pau - everything looked amazing and we heard rave reviews from attendees who ordered food. We ended up getting the butter mochi trio which was the perfect sweet bite to complement all our cocktails. We came to Trick Dog for a drink before our reservation at Foreign Cinema. We sat by the bar and were lucky to spots as we were pretty early. It was the Circus menu and we got the Illusionist and Glass Walker. I loved the Glass Walker with gin, rice vinegar and wasabi. The hint of wasabi in particular was really interesting. The Illusionist was pretty sweet and reminded me of a tiki bar drink. It did have a nice smoky aftertaste with the mezcal but it was a bit too sweet and creamy for me with the sherry cream. Heard it was the best bar in SF, and although the drinks were interesting, I didn't really like mine. For some reason it tasted a bit musty to me, like the funk of blue cheese. My friend thought it tasted fine though, saying that's what coconut milk was supposed to taste like. Was walking down this street on a Tuesday evening and decided to stop inside. It's a fun place and the staff was very nice. The food way surpassed our expectations. The kale was not at all bitter like kale can sometimes be. It was covered in pepitas and cheese as well as surprise bites of avocado so there was lot of good textures. The dress was delicious and there was a good portion. The hotdogs was probably one of the best hotdogs I've had in the city. The bun was lightly toasted, the sauce/peppers added a good amount of spicy without taking away from the flavors of the hotdog, and I always love opinions on a hot dog. Overall, this place was great! Trick Dog has been on my list awhile considering they are nationally lauded for their creative cocktails. We stopped by on a Sunday afternoon with some friends. They have a beautiful bar, the lighting and natural wood set a vibe, and the upstairs pink old school feel brings a comforting energy. The menu rotates theme, the current theme is Meet Me in the City featuring photography from different artists across San Francisco. The menu is actually a pretty interesting art history book giving background on the photographs/artists. I really appreciate the thought put into the theme. The service was great, super nice and accommodating for a large group walk in. I ordered the famous kale salad, trick dog burger, and we ordered an assortment of cocktails and fries for the table. My favorite cocktail was the Dolores: Fords gin white negroni, green tea, C02. The ice cube was a beam with "Meet Me in the City" embossed. It was so light, easy to drink, floral. I loved it! The Cinemaphile: Torres 15 yr brandy, px sherry, labneh, pineapple, coconut, za'atar, lemon was also good, but very big. I liked the lemon, labneh, za'tar a lot, it was boozy. I cannot get over the kale salad, simple done so so well. It was easy to eat. I am so surprised I was reaching for salad over fries! The trick dog burger is served like a hot dog? I really liked it, it hit the spot! Classic burger with thin lettuce, all the fixings, and a house sauce. Big fan!! This review is on the drinks only. I can't say enough about the artwork and presentation of their menu, which they change (I think they said) every 6 months to a year. You can see recent examples framed on the wall, but the current one is a set of circus act postcards. The bar itself is immaculate and the high ceilings make it feel more spacious than it is. The bartenders show a lot of care in their craft. This is a great place to go to try something surprising. Lion Tamer: Delicious and on the sweet side with a hint of spice. The presentation with the fluffy mint in mine was nice. Sword Swallower: A take on a martini, this was refreshing on a warm day. It's served with a sliver of cucumber wrapped around the collins-sized ice block and a little sword. Glass Walker: Briny!
