    Grilled Pork Sandwich
    June R.

We were looking for a quick bite near a meeting in Oakland and stumbled upon Pho Sho Dough--honestly, the name alone reeled us in! It's a small takeout spot with a few seats, and even though we came close to closing time, the service was super friendly and quick. We ordered the grilled pork banh mi, the lemongrass beef banh mi, and a shrimp spring roll. The shrimp roll was unique--the shrimp was fully cooked and marinated in a flavorful sauce, not your average fresh roll, and it was delicious. Both banh mis were excellent--the bread was perfectly crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside, and they were generously packed with savory flavorful meat and plenty of pickled veggies. We brought everything back to San Francisco, and even after the drive, it all still tasted amazing. Definitely a great find--highly recommend if you're in the area!

More of a to-go place (unless you want to sit on the curbside patio) is this gem of a Vietnamese place. It's a no frills place for the most basic Vietnamese food - pho, banh mi, and spring rolls/egg rolls. Their egg rolls are one of a kind. They're crunchy, hefty, and generous. We also got their spring roll wrapped egg rolls (aka a typical spring roll with shrimp but imagine the spring roll filled with an egg roll instead of shrimp). We also got the grilled pork vermicelli and it was a generous portion. We will most definitely be back - especially since their service was so fast. We got our food in less than 15 min! You can also call in to shorten the wait time. Easy street parking too!

    Outside, cleaver name.

Love this place! The staff is always friendly with quick service. The Pho is yummy. So are the spring rolls. If you're looking for something quick and healthy that won't break the bank this is your place. There's no inside seating which works on a nice day. However, to go works well too.

Jamie W and I have been enjoying visits to the White Horse Inn on random Saturdays for a while now. We had noticed this corner Vietnamese takeout spot but didn't try it until quite recently when I was having a post-cocktail hankering for pho. Luckily Jamie was starving, too, so we ended up sharing three familiar items and having them at the outdoor table next to the big mural (photo: https://yelp.to/X_xPeJEy5i). We started with the $9.95 Fresh Shrimp Spring Rolls, which were generously assembled with lettuce, vermicelli, and plenty of split prawns encased in translucent rice paper accompanied by a sweet peanut dipping sauce (photo: https://yelp.to/_UapbYqWp6). The second item was the $9.95 Grilled Pork Banh Mi which, a soft French roll robustly stuffed with pork, cucumber, shredded carrot and radish, and cilantro (photo: https://yelp.to/xGzS28kOct). That was definitely one of the better banh mis I've had outside of Saigon Sandwich. The $14.95 Roasted Chicken Noodle Soup wasn't technically pho but Hu Tieu Ga Nuong, a South Vietnamese soup with a lighter broth and larger chunks of chicken (photo: https://yelp.to/2ioXM-lGKJ). I don't think I've had this variation before, but it was pretty satisfying. All in all, this was a nice find on Telegraph for hearty Vietnamese eats. FOOD - 4 stars...pretty tasty and quite generous AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...well, it's really a takeout spot SERVICE - 4 stars...quite efficient and friendly TOTAL - 4 stars...solid Vietnamese fare with regional variations from the norm RELATED - Exploring Oakland? It might not be easy to tell from the picture I uploaded, but the sandwiches here are massive! I got mine with lemongrass beef. It was very flavorful, the bread was toasted nicely, and it was so filling I had to wrap up half of it to-go. It's not a huge place, but there are a couple of tables right outside on the side street (which is pretty quiet and peaceful). Service was good -- staff made sure to walk around with water refills. I would definitely come back to try another sandwich and their other items!

Man! We missed our pho spot since moving away from the east bay! These flavors are a mix of new school meets old school! Service makes you feel like you're at your Vietnamese family members house! Super friendly and always has a joke to make you smile :) ! I've tried many things on the Menu at both locations. Our favorite besides the pho with the delicious broth is the chicken vermicelli noodle bowls! They fill that thing to the brim! Right now we're on our vegetarian hype right now so didn't get it w/ chicken this time! But trust! It's fire! If you are in the area and looking for a nice hot bowl of pho or just great food, COME HERE!

We came back for round two and ordered the fried spring rolls! Honestly probably the best egg rolls I've had in a long time -- the perfect amount of crisp and the flavor was delicious!

Made My Day Go Yo. Decent authentic Pho. I also had a real fresh coconut juice. Definitely is one of your neighborhood good choice. Ps. Sit on red chairs on sidewalk of Berkeley is so summer still. $

With my luck, my car would smell like hello kitty for weeks. Anyhow, I found Mẹ Và Con on yelp, a mother-daughter owned resto that opened in 2024. They serve bánh khọt and have outdoor seating so we headed over. Thankfully, we arrived before the Sunday dinner rush (~5:45 pm) and before the parking lot was filled. Rezzies are accepted (via phone). M E N U Viet Cuisine with some elevated, modern twists (no specific regional specialty). Smaller menu than your typical hole-in-the-wall with 25-30 items including AZN fusion items like shrimp ceviche, kimchi pasta and tom yum pasta. Beer, wine, and soju cocktails available. F O O D * Bò Tái Chanh: Beef Carpaccio w/ Thai basil, fried shallot, house tangerine sauce ($18): https://tinyurl.com/nhcn9kxw - Served at dinner only Fresh, tender slices of beef carpaccio with a sweetness from the tangerine sauce and white onions. I appreciate their twist (tangerine sauce instead of nước chấm) but it was too one note for me...IMO, it needed acid and herbs. Plus, I miss the texture of peanuts. * Bánh Khọt: Viet Mini Pancakes w/ shrimp, coconut milk batter, herbs, pickles ($24): https://tinyurl.com/34nx7sat - Served at dinner only Fav dish of the night, the savory bánh khọt was delicately crispy and slightly custardy in the center with a snappy shrimp drizzled with fragrant scallion oil. It came with romaine, mint, and perilla leaves neatly layered for easy wrapping. The lettuce was a bit soft and soggy tho, and I think they forgot the pickled veggies. Served with a tiny portion of tangy sweet nước chấm. * Bò Lúc Lắc: Shaking Beef w/ soy, garlic, onion, cherry tomato, arugula ($26): https://tinyurl.com/3rkpukct Meltingly tender cubes of filet mignon but light on the seasoning and aromatics so it was bland. Also, was hoping for more smoky wok hei flavor. * Thịt Kho Tàu: Braised Pork Belly w/ hard boiled eggs, rice ($21): https://tinyurl.com/mr2evryw - Includes bowl of rice A traditional dish served during Lunar New Year, it symbolizes prosperity, warmth, and stability. Chunks of pork belly are caramelized in sugar and braised in coconut soda and fish sauce - rich, savory with a good ratio of lean meat to fat (4 pieces). Wish they used more braising liquid when warming up, as some pieces were a bit dry. S E R V I C E Warm, friendly hospitality. Food does take awhile tho...our first dish took about 30 minutes to arrive. A M B I A N C E Casual, no-frills indoor area with about 10-12 tables. Cute covered patio in the parking lot with 5 tables and fairy lights. Overall, Mẹ Và Con is a great place to introduce people that are new to Viet cuisine and/or you're looking for Viet dishes with different twist.

The pho, the rice plate and the bun were delicious! It's been a while since I enjoyed these dishes…read moreso much that this will now be my go to place and my recommended place for these entree. The pho was right on. Piping hot soup that didn't cool down until after you're done even on a cold day. That's just perfect for the wintery weather. The soup was so good - the right amount of aromatics and the beef flavor. And it wasn't overly oily. The amount of meat to noodle ratio was perfect, and I would even dare say I felt there was a lot of meat for a regular bowl of pho that I didn't end the pho with just noodles but had meat to go to the last bite. The rice plate, where we had pork chop with fried spring rolls was yummy! The pork chop was well seasoned that my kids ate it without complaining anything about it. Some places use black pepper and even too much of it to potentially cover up for lack of flavor or perhaps low quality meat. The fried spring rolls were delicious and not too oily either. The bun though with good amount of fresh greens was still a very filling bowl with the amount of meat, spring roll and noodles. The taste of it with the fish sauce was reminiscent of bun in Vietnam. The only thing that ok instead of being amazing was the marinated fried chicken with sauce as it was on the spicier side with the fresh chili and the marinate didn't seem to penetrate into the chicken well enough. Service was reasonably fast, but then again we were there before the restaurant filled up starting at 7pm.

I've tried quite a lot of bún chả, and I could detect the marginal increase in quality here compared to other places. The phở-nominal cocktails and fish sauce ice cream were also delectable. I loved the savory take on each, and since they're rarer finds, I was glad that Tay Ho had them on the menu. Also notable is that even though we came early, there were already a substantial amount of diners and the place was busy, which is a good sign this place delivers the goods.
