I know airports are a captive audience, and Kennedy is a terrible example of an airport. To add to the things that suck about JFK (parking, terribly inconvenient location, delays galore, filthy conditions at the terminals, etc.) is the travesty that is "Piazza Breakfast." Located in Terminal 5 (where JetBlue dominates), this is your only option as you get through security and want a "sit down" breakfast in the AM hours. No matter which "restaurant" you sit in (deep blue, 5ive steak, probably others I can't think of), the breakfast food is all made in a central kitchen. Ordering: You order on your phone via QR code on the table and pay on the phone too. Prices: You won't be shocked by the prices. "It's New York" plus "it's an airport." Service: Non-existent. We had to ask for water repeatedly, when there were pitchers of it sitting out. If we had glasses, we'd have served ourselves. Would that even be legal though? Who knows. We eventually got water, but were never offered refills. Never checked on. Server had to confirm our order and asked to see the receipt, specifically about the chicken sausage order. Speaking of that.... Food: My whole grain toast had a hair in it. I ate it anyway and I think I picked the hair out. Who knows? The bread was actually pretty decent. Chicken sausage was also ordered. It was pretty disgusting. Somehow they manage to make a "healthy" item greasy. It also had weird discolored pieces of meat that I didn't eat. Drinks: You'll be offered high $ booze as soon as you scan the QR code. We opted for coffee and tea . Nikki said the coffee was typical diner stuff. My earl grey tea was ok. They serve "Rishi" brand. I didn't taste very much bergamot, if any. Was it even earl grey? I'll surely ponder this mystery on my death bed. In summary, "Piazza Breakfast" isn't worth it in any way. You'll be wasting valuable time on terrible food, with insulting inadequate service. I recommend exploring the terminal for other options, eating before you get to the airport, or sucking it up and buying a $6 for a small Chobani yogurt cup ($1-1.75 regularly priced) at the bodega place next to "deep blue." I don't show up with high expectations. You order your own food online through clumsy app brought up by a QR code. That eliminates any possibility of miscommunication in the ordering process. Yet, somehow they screw up. Mistake 1: not including toast with eggs-any-style breakfast. Instead it comes with a biscuit. I'm sorry are we in Atlanta or NYC/ Mistake 2: making me pay $3 for toast as side order on top of a twenty-something-dollar ham and eggs. Mistake 3: not bringing the toast. The app seems to have a way to request a refund for the missing order, but I doubt it will work. Plus, there's an argument that when the missing piece is an integral part of the meal that you get more back than the cost of the "side." Eating eggs over easy without toast is like a cheeseburger without a bun. Finally, asking for a default 18% tip up-front in self-ordering restaurant is a bit much. Especially when you can't easily change it when the service stinks. Anyway. Had low expectations and they came in under them. read more

I don't have very high expectations for early airport breakfast, so this place was fine by that standard. Piazza opens at 5 AM. It's a decent place to sit at if you're flying in after a red-eye. I came for breakfast around 5:30 and service was good. There were plenty of available tables and we were seated at a booth all the way inside the restaurant. The worst part of the experience was that our corner was extremely cold... The A/C was blasting on me the entire time. The actual food was okay. I ordered the Steak and Eggs (over easy), and it looked better than some of the other traditional breakfast options. However, I was a bit surprised that I only got a plastic knife for the steak! The long Lyft ride from my hotel in Lower Manhattan to JFK turned out not to be so long, and my frisking down with the TSA wasn't too frisky. In other words, I got to the terminal on the early side, so I had time to get breakfast. Once you get to Terminal 5's main hub, it's hard to miss this cafe layout since it's out in the open where waiting passengers pass by and gawk. Just my type of ambiance. When I took the initiative to seat myself, I was reprimanded for not waiting for his approval to be seated. Napoleon complex I presume. When I sat down, I decided to order the $16 Farmer's Omelette since it was made with egg whites and featured turkey bacon and veggies. I certainly couldn't turn down a country biscuit even though it was mediocre at best. Great spot to park and wait for a flight in the JetBlue terminal. You can tell a lot about a place by its bar (ok, I can tell a lot by the bar) and it's great. The Bloody Mary (or two...do t judge) was amazing. In-house crafted mix and quite tasty with a good balance of flavor and spice. The staff is friendly and welcoming and the service quick enough to catch any flight. Worth the stop! read more

Thought about giving 2 stars instead but realized i was being modest. All i ordered was a toasted bagel with butter and jam. The bagel came out burnt black, cold, hard as a rock. I literally banged in on the plate and it was rock solid. So i sent it back and asked if it could be a little lighter toasted. They gave me back an untoasted, cold bagel, and the butter was too cold to spread on my already cold bagel. At this point i just had to eat it because i was in a rush. Our server said a total of 2 sentences to us, not even a "how are you" or a "thanks for coming." My boyfriend got an omelette with homefries. Tiny omelette, and the blandest probably-came-frozen-in-a-bag homefries. I realize this review will probably do nothing as far as their sales go, because travelers will continue to come here due to the convenience of it. KEEP WALKING!!!! Better yet run away. I was pumped when Eater had so many spots in Terminal 5. Sadly it was 6am and they were not the restaurants actually serving the food. Oh so disappointed. I should have known to check reviews when one waiter said that they have all the same food. Definitely worth all the bad reviews. Underperforming food and without a doubt not worth the price. Service was mediocre but for the price and the food it should have been better. Literally no reason for a $16 Bagel and Lox when the bagel is blah and crap cream cheese. Food was just tossed on the plate. So it's not just To-Go food that is a mess it's all the food. Oatmeal was bland but after a heavy squeeze of honey it was better. Hash was the clear winner and best dish by a mile. Should have just ordered 7 or 8 hashes instead of actual entrees. Surprisingly, there is a huge brunch scene at Terminal 5. Lots of seating, coffee, fancy breakfast dishes and cocktails! It almost feels like being at a real restaurant and not at an airport. Lobster Benedict: Pretty fancy for airport food. A very generous amount of lobster that tastes relatively fresh. Unfortunately it's doused in mayo (I prefer the warm butter variety) and it's on whole wheat toast (instead of an English muffin). The poached egg was perfectly gooey. The home fries were crispy and a nice hearty counter to the lighter main. Great way to start a day of travels. read more
