This was a five star spot before they changed the bread. Baffling why they would; it was specific and spectacular, pillowy bread from perfect boules, with a textured and satisfying crust, and honestly the single biggest draw that set this place's sandwiches apart. The new bread is allegedly the same recipe, but shaped, finished, and cut differently (slices are now thinner). Every one of those factors affects how the bread turns out -- and the new bread is average. Not bad, just not special. The crumb is different. The rise is different. The crust is dry and papery. No reason to come back or pay the higher and higher prices for the ghost of a formerly beloved sandwich. Especially sad because at first it seemed the new owners were gonna respect what made this menu great to begin with. But they are insisting the bread hasn't changed, so either they are trying to pull one over on us, or truly can't tell the difference -- either way not a mark of a restaurant or chef you can trust. The food at Fiore is pretty good. I've had it a couple of times in the form of leftovers from my wife having lunch there. Unfortunately, the ordering system is such a hassle that I have never been able to order lunch for myself. I walked away today without being able to enjoy their delicious short rib sandwich or their roasted chicken and glazed maple salad again. I don't have the time to drive there, Scan their QR code for a menu and order function and then wait for the order to come out. Usually a sandwich is not a meal I particularly plan for, it's more of an "I'm here, I have a few minutes, I'll grab a bite" type of situation. The new ordering system does not lend itself to this. We've been coming to Fiore market since it was opened. We have bragged to friends that they have the best sandwiches in Southern California. I was worried that when Bill sold it they'd change things and that didn't happen initially, but we ordered the chicken sandwiches yesterday and instead of having a small amount of pesto, the pesto was half the sandwich. It was wet and not good. Everything it touched turned green. Way too much pesto and mayo, and they could even cut back on the mozzarella a bit. I'd like to order it 'the way Bill made it' but I don't know if they'd understand. I don't love the name change at all, but if the sandwiches were the same, I wouldn't mind. We have eaten so many of those sandwiches over the years, that I'm sad that I'm not sure I'll go back. They didn't cheap out on anything, it's just become a gooey, wet, very green mess of a sandwich. It was alright? I'd had this place bookmarked forever, and just never took the time to stop in. It would seem from the other reviews that I should have sooner, as the new management seems to have changed things up a bit. I wouldn''t know how things were before, but hopefully they were better than what we experienced. For one, the prices were unreasonable for what you get. Not to mention it looks like they've gone up multiple times in the past year or two based on menu photos (like many other places, there's so much to be said about how upsetting this has been and the way they try to excuse poor business practices like this and blame it on minimum wage or the supply chain, the former of which hasn't gone up in tandem with inflation anyway). Piccolo mortadella - yeah, don't think you're getting what's in the photo on their menu online with all that thick cut mortadella stuffed to the brim of the baguette. No, instead it's a sad, thin baguette with like three thin slices of meat, a dollop of onions, and an overpowering amount of cheese. The baguette itself was hard and chewy and unpleasant to eat. The flavors were not at all balanced and there was nothing that could justify the 13 and change and tip for it. Roasted chicken sandwich - much better than the last. The bread on this was soft and pillowy, but the crust had the same chewy unpleasantness. The flavors were on point, the chicken was delightful. But once again we had a sandwich that was 80 percent bread and the meat, burrata, and pesto tried desperately to contend with it. Sorry, but 16 dollars for bread and a scoop of yummy chicken ain't it. Very small and basic drink fridge selection. We ate on the patio which was very cute and quaint, but corners of it by the free water dispenser were covered in cobwebs and looked poorly maintained. Lastly, the wait time of over a half hour for two small sandwiches was unexpected, when we were there a half hour after it opened and only one other person was there on a weekday morning. Omg this place was delicious. No seating inside but there's a cute outdoor set up. The bread is sooo soft and fresh! Menu is simple with enough options. The chicken curried salad sandwich was absolutely yum! Perfect seasoning and the curry was not as strong I'd like it to be but it was delicious. Asian salad was also divine. The chicken was warm which I loved since I don't like cold meats. I can't wait to try the rest of the menu! You do have to ask for napkins since I didn't get any. My experience was extremely disappointing and frustrating. We got to the restaurant for lunch and found we had to order online. So we placed an order online and waited about 15 minutes. We got our food and it was completely wrong. Then, we had to wait another 10 minutes but couldn't sit down to eat anymore as our lunch was over. I have been a die hard fan of Fiore for a long time, and always refer locals and non locals to come check out this small owned cafe, and get some delicious food. Either way, there shouldn't be sandwiches with almost no meat, buratta, or condiments that come out of your kitchen. Ive been going to Fiore for at least 5 years now. I used to travel 20+ miles from the San Fernando valley, for the pork belly sando, their short rib, and the veggie and buratta piccolo. I don't know what's going on, but within the past couple of months anytime I order Fiore, the order is EXTREMELY SKIMPY ON MEAT, CONDIMENTS, and greens? The only thing that I can say is the same, is that delicious bread and some of their spreads/ greens they use. The last several times I've ordered, the pork belly has had the pork portioned snack center of the bread, condiments don't even reach the boarder or the crust. Pork belly is not crispy. The love just isn't there: it seems like these items are being prepared with seriously little regard to how much the customer is paying. Like I said: I've had these sandwiches for a LONG TIME! It's normal to sometimes have someone in back of house do thing differently than someone else, and I understand running out of items for a sandwhich- but instead of selling the pork belly with no joke 5 tiny cubes between each half of a massive sandwhich, just 86 it on toast. It isn't fair to provide a special item for one customer, completely inconsistent with the next. The positives of this spot are that the employees are kind, Jeffrey is awesome and still works there, the bread is indeed being made the same, and I know that the new owner definitely cares about Fiore, and wants to honor its name and legacy. That's why I want you to know, until items go back to the quality they once had? I don't know if it's worth a shot anymore. COVID precautions: Currently Fiore Market Cafe takes orders online and to-go only (as of June 2021), and we walked up to the hostess podium and scanned the QR code menu to access. Easy peasy - the podium is also where you pick up your to-go orders. They do have their charming cafe tables set up if you would like to sit on the premises to eat, with someone disinfecting the tables between customers as well. Food / Drink: We ordered the pesto chicken sandwich (my perennial favorite) and two Arnold Palmers to go with them. The chicken sandwich is within two slices of sourdough that is so soft and springy, with a very tasty wholesome crust, without toughness or overly tanginess. The chicken itself is so juicy with the basil walnut pesto and the burrata cheese, milky and creamy with each bite. Arnold palmers - can't go wrong, you can taste the tea and the fresh lemon juice and is great on a sunny day. Ambiance: We've always loved this green corner of South Pasadena, and sitting outside (even though the roads are relatively big, it doesn't feel uncomfortable) on the grass and eating cafe fare is a part of a lovely, relaxed weekend vibe. I always check out the raised planters for what's newly growing that season, and of course the staff here is always friendly and helpful. We (as a family) have been loyal customers to Fiore Market Cafe for years. Since before we were a family. We remember Anne and Bill working together and sadly we were there for the memorial when she passed which was held ar Fiore. It was a heart breaking time. But it says a lot about a place that had so much heart and soul that patrons were invested into the people and food that made it what it was. We had high hopes when new ownership was announced especially when the owner said she would respect and carry on the legacy. It sounded like careful thought toward retaining the loyal customers was going to be a priority. Instead it seemed like she didn't love the fact that she couldn't measure up to what preceded her. So unfortunately after giving it so many shots, it is obvious it's lost its soul and the quality that used to be there. So much so that it seemed like she couldn't handle the bad reviews and feedback ... so she had to completely rebrand and change the name. This was a huge blow to the heart that used to be Fiore. She had to of known what that meant to the history and loyal patrons on top of the degrading quality. Her announcement lacked compassion and tact. A humble owner who truly respected the legacy she took over would have taken the criticism and used it to improve instead of trying to silence it. If people are saying the bread tastes bad, then you made a mistake in whatever new method you tried to adopt. We went so many times hoping for good bread and better sandwich proportions but were disappointed often (by new unrelated things too). There was a brief time it seemed like she was listening to feedback about the bread but it was short lived. It went back to being lower quality on our next visit. Our young kids even noticed without us telling them anything. That bread used to be homemade fresh every morning and the former owner (you could also buy a load if you wanted!), Bill used to make his rounds asking how everything was tasting. Oh if you had an issue, there was no ego... he would make it better. That's what is missing from Picadilly. Instead, now you're met with an undertone of annoyance from the owner if you try to share your experience (if it's negative). That's what new patrons will never understand. We truly did give it a shot. The nail in the coffin was her changing the name and the way she did it. Fiore officially lost its soul. Another great establishment bites the dust. Can it still succeed and be profitable under its new name? Sure. But it will never be what it once was, and that's what we're sad about. We crave the food we remember. It has been a long time coming, but I have finally made it. I have had a gift certificate to this cute little spot for months on end, but have just now managed to line my schedule up for a visit. I ordered the chicken pesto sandwich which was delicious on that yummy baked bread, and it comes with a tasty side salad. I also ordered a small side of the lentil salad, which is perhaps my favorite food in the world, and I loved it. The lentil salad had a good crunch to it with a sweet taste. My food was great and definitely a spot on lunch. The decor is simple and cute, has a nice garden feel to it. There are simple chairs and tables outside and there is a water station for you to grab a drink. The food come out swiftly and the staff were spot on. I know the new owner is probably doing the best they can, and having to deal with the minimum wage increase, increasing food costs, and it's South Pas so I'd image the taxes and fees must be outrageous, but I'm very sad to say that this place seems to have gone downhill. Granted, it still has an abundance of hipsters and stay at home moms frequenting the place, but it's definitely changed. The pesto sandwich used to be absolutely amazing. Now, the chicken doesn't seem to have any flavor, and while the pesto and the cheese are still great, something happened to the bread. The salad is the same, and they still have the off brand / hipster canned drinks, or you can get what seems to be a 10 ounce cup of iced tea or lemonade for about four dollars (no refills).
