Absolutely phenomenal and homey. My girlfriend and I walked in on a busy Friday night without a reservation and were able to snag a spot at the bar while we waited for a table. We ordered a nice bottle of Chianti to start while a table opened up for us. The waiter brought over some soft homemade bread rolls accompanied by a nice tomato sauce, oil and vinegar. We quickly got a table and ordered the black spaghetti with blue crab meat and the bucatini with braised duck ragu and mushrooms. The spaghetti was flavorful and perfectly cooked, with large lumps of crab meat mixed in, but the bucatini was the star of the show. For those that don't know, bucatini is sort of a thicker spaghetti with a hole running down the middle. The braised duck ragu was so flavorful and coated every inch of the bucatini, inside and out. It was the perfect dish and went extremely well with the chianti, which was bold and full-bodied. Lastly, the ambiance had a great homey vibe to it (lots of wood and warm lighting) Our bartender and waiter had great, welcoming personalities and really added to the energy of the place. The most enjoyable and endearing dining experience I've had in my life. Stopped by after an appointment for an early dinner and was greeted by the affable owner who was so gracious and accommodating (not to mention so unbelievably kind, charismatic, and had the most touching Italian accent). This is the definition of a local neighborhood spot: on the corner, local residents stop by just to say hi to the owner and introduce them to their baby (I can't make this up); obvious regulars; a friendly closeness among staff and owner; cozy atmosphere and a welcoming of a first time drop in or an unannounced regular coming in for the usual. Not to mention, the food was delicious: had the pappardelle ragú and an arugula salad. I wish this type of dining experience for everyone: a meal and an atmosphere that will put you in a lovely mood! We shared the buffalo mozzarella starter which was interesting and unexpected, warm butternut and mushrooms with fresh mozzarella, tasted good but doubt I'll have again. For mains we had the spaghetti Calabrese and Hangar Steak with chimichurri. Both were ok but not standout unfortunately. The pasta came with very small shrimp which was again unexpected and was milder than expected for a Calabrese dish. For desert we tried the pannacotta and mini chocolate cake. Both were good but again not standout. A few inconsistencies with menu description and actual food caused confusion when food delivered did not look like what was on menu. A cute, quaint italian restaurant on a residential block in park slope. we were a party of 6 and ordered 3 appetizers and a bottle of pinot noir to start. (prosciutto with apples and cheese, calamari salad, and a sardine/cauliflower salad.) Warm bread was served first. Eat these quick before they harden! For the main course, I had spicy sausage risotto. YUM. cheesy, rich and delicious with a kick, but it's filling. and it's heavy. I would recommend splitting this with a friend and ordering a protein to share too. the bf had lamb chops with mashed potato, which i happily stole bites of. I tasted the pappardelle, which was also delicious. The star of the dessert selection was the panna cotta with pine nuts. AMAZING. the tiramisu was also very good. We went here recently when they opened indoor dining. We got a seat quickly because we had a reservation. The food was fantastic. We found out that their bread is actually house made and it was warm and fluffy. We ordered the mozzarella with butternut squash, which was interesting but still good. My main entree was the pappardelle with honey braised rib. Wow. Definitely tasted authentic and delicious. Would recommend for the main course. Service was great even though they were busy inside and outside. They were very kind and attentive to our needs. Would definitely save this place in mind as my local Italian spot. read more

I've been here a handful of times. The photos I posted are from the last time I went (a few weeks ago), and the lighting was low so please excuse the quality. This restaurant is fantastic. Everything on the menu is delicious, and at this point I'd say that I've tried most of the entrees. Come to Piccoli Trattoria with an APPETITE (seriously, everything is REALLY filling and you will want dessert). I'll list a few of my favorite dishes that I've had here over time: 1) Spaghetti Calabrese (Black spaghetti with shrimp, chorizo and spicy calabrian tomato sauce): this dish packs a kick, and the combination of shrimp and sausage is a winner. 2) Both their ravioli dishes -- Ravioli Di Caprino (Goat cheese and scallion ravioli with black olive-tomato butter) and Ravioli di Zucca (Roasted butternut squash ravioli with mascarpone cheese and sage): these are a great option if you are a vegetarian. They are rich and filling. 3) Pappardelle (Egg pappardelle with honey-braised short rib ragu): for the meat-lover. The flavors surprised me the first time I ordered it but it works. The acrobaleno makes regular salads tasteless. It was so full of flavor and it was extremely good. The polenta was an interesting dish, something I didn't expect to enjoy but it turned out differently. As for pasta, I would definitely recommend the rigatoni or spaghetti calabrese. The vanilla bean gelato "affogato" drowned in espresso with almond crunch was probably the best dessert I've ever had. Since I am a vanilla lover, the warm chocolate cake with chocolate-caramel center s/w toasted hazelnuts and mascarpone-whipped cream wasn't my favorite but I would recommend it for chocolate lovers! read more

Looking through the menu, I did not see lasagna...so I asked the waiter "what tastes and feels like lasagna, but is not a lasagna?" He replied I should order the pasta bolognese which comes with a meat sauce and added that I should add Mozzarella. When you do all of that you basically get a deconstructed lasagna! It was pretty good and my cravings were definitely satisfied. My friend and I also shared the polenta with mushroom cream sauce...also delectable! Was a bit disappointed. Prices and relatively low or fair and the dishes sound and look good. But the taste was off. I had the duck special and immediately I noticed that there was way too much fat, they made no effort to render the fat... And the crispy fat on duck is usually one of the best things to enjoy, but not here because it was not crispy and not rendered... Then the spinach that it came with had gritty pieces in it, almost like they didnt wash it. The linguine with cream sauce was just ok, I felt like I could have made it at home with jarred sauce. We came here for a family lunch, it's a cute place with nice outside seating. Word of advice - stick with the pastas, nothing else was that great. Grilled calamari was ok, not the best. Arcobaleno salad was tiny, bits of grilled corn, fire roasted peppers tasted like from the jar, tiny amount of greens and parmesano. Eggs from the Brunch menu were quite disappointing as well. pappardelle and fettuccine was ok. The worst was the so-called panini that was described ON THE MENU to be pressed in an iron presser, house made focaccia, smoked salmon and goat cheese - what was brought to us was appalling. It was 2 pieces of white bread with smoked salmon stuck in between and tomatoes sliced on top. Why this is called a panini or who designed this dish, its just beyond me. This is New York, stuff like this doesn't fly. We should've sent it back instead of leaving it on the table and being charged for it. Overall, we enjoyed our lunch but more for the company rather than food or service. With so many amazing restaurants in the area, we will NOT be back. read more

Attended a dinner with about 10 people at Piccoli Trattoria this past weekend. The restaurant itself is small but very comfortable and inviting. I arrived to the reservation early and the host was very nice to allow me to sit at the table early while I waited on the rest of the party. We ordered grilled octopus for the table and I had the black spaghetti with blue claw crab meat . All of the food and service was excellent . I was washing down my food with Peroni beers and the waitress made sure that my glass was never empty. Every new beer was brought with a new glass. I will definitely return to this restaurant when I am working in the area! read more

Favorite local Italian place! (Honestly beats Mariella in my opinion.) Would honestly give it 4.5 stars, only docking it a touch because sometimes the service can be slow and every now and then their Special entrees fall flat (although most of the time they're wonderful!) Ok, so why this place is 100% worth adding to your normal rotation: Complimentary fresh baked rolls are served with a delicious cold tomato and olive dip -- I'm sure there's an actual name for this but I've never asked. :) Their salads are always great. My two favorites are the shredded brussels sprouts Pecoraio salad, as well as the Arcobaleno. Sometimes if I'm feeling like something light, I'll just order one of these with chicken or shrimp. I've also never had a bad Special salad -- they always deliver. Entrees! The two we go back to time and time again are the Pappardelle (honey braised short rib ragu!!) and Bolognese Della Nonna. They pack so much flavor into these dishes. Literally the definition of Italian comfort food. That said, we've tried just about everything else on the standard entree menu (pastas, risottos, and dishes) -- you really can't go wrong with anything here. They have a daily pasta special that's usually a gnocchi dish which is always fantastic. I had one the other day with broccoli rabe, sweet Italian sausage, and burst cherry tomatoes in a white wine sauce and it was DIVINE. Desserts! The olive oil cake is unlike any I've ever had. Super moist and delicious. Also worth trying the tiramisu which never disappoints. Oh!! Piccoli epitomizes the neighborhood joint that you want to visit at least once a month, if not more. It's a place to gush about in hushed tones because you love the food that much, but you don't want everyone and their cousin rushing over to see what the hype is about. The vibe is unassuming, casual, and intimate. You can easily come here if you're too lazy to cook, on a date, or want to take your parents somewhere nice (but not fancy) for dinner. If it's a nice day, and you have the option, sit outside - the experience is almost as memorable as the food. Most importantly, do not skip out on the (homemade) pastas. They are cooked with the perfect amount of chew. The spaghetti calabrese is unforgettable. The fettucine con ragu d'anatra is what I want to eat on a chilly day. I would easily pay at least $20 for each, and yet all of their pastas are under $20. But before anything else, I order a risotto because they take longer to prepare, and I like sharing it as a starter. From the actual smaller dishes, my picks are the calamari - grilled, smoky and just crispy enough, but not overcooked - and the pecoraio salad, which I would be happy eating a big tub of. I wish I could say something about the dessert, but I keep making the mistake of ordering too much food. One day, I will exercise more self-control. read more

It was such a quaint little restaurant where a couple was celebrating an engagement at the time me and my friend went. The pricing is kinda on par with the area- which is the fancy part of Brooklyn. I also shared an appetizer - carpacio which was delectable. I think you need to take the F or G train in Brooklyn to get here. They have a wonderful wine selection and very kind wait staff. Often risotto is mushy, however theirs was tender but still had a little bite; it was delicious. The beet salad flavor was very good; I would have preferred more beets and I can't believe I am saying this, but maybe less burrata. Service was generally prompt (though we might have been forgotten for a few minutes at a time since we were outside), and the sights sounds and smells set the stage for a nice meal. Leaning pasta and seafood, my wife and I decided to try the grilled calamari appetizer, the linguine vongole, and the spaghetti Calabrese. The calamari was fairly good, but a few pieces were a little overcooked and rubbery. As for the vongole, the clams and pasta themselves were very good, but the saffron broth with leeks was really underwhelming and bland. The Calabrese pasta was probably the highlight of the meal, and while the shrimp were a touch overcooked, the flavor of the squid ink spaghetti in the red seafood sauce was pretty satisfying. A quaint restaurant on the corner of 6th Ave. I pass by it often on my way to and from work, and noticed that it gets crowded, especially on the weekends. Piccoli has a few tables on the sidewalk for outdoor seating. It's a nice place for a date night, as well as dinner or brunch with a small group. My husband and I dined at and ordered from Piccoli several times. Their pasta is usually on point. Rigatoni alla Norma is one of my favorites. It's has a well balanced tomato sauce with chunks of eggplant and mozzarella. Last night, I ordered their Risotto Selvagio. It comes with wild rice, butternut squash, and mushrooms. Get to the Chase: Pros: -Hands down THE BEST SERVICE I've EVER had at a restaurant. It was a Friday early evening around 5:30 pm and I had a bulky stroller and my baby. They immediately seated me outside underneath the umbrella shade and even brought out a separate straw cup of water for my little one! She got her own napkin too. They were courteous, attentive, quick on serving the food and the quality was OUTSTANDING. Will be coming here again and again -Food is is astonishingly good, and you can tell they love their craft and all that is Italian. The black spaghetti with blue crab was to die for and I could have that as my last meal on Earth any day every day. Also had the hazelnut gelato with tiramisu and papperdelle.
