Camillo is a recent discovery for me and my family. I've been curious about this place for years, but somehow I've never had the chance to try it until recently. Clearly, I have been missing out. Camillo is a wonderful, welcoming place with great food and an amazing selection of Negronis. Named after Count Camillo Negroni[1], the man who allegedly invented the negroni cocktail in 1919, Camillo offers a variety of classic Italian cocktails, spritzes, vermouth, amari, local beer and wines on tap. The negroni menu alone is worth the visit: nine variations, many centered around unexpected spirits and local ingredients (one features mezcal, another artichoke liqueur). If, like me, you love a negroni, you will be in heaven here. The space is done up in an utterly charming mix of exposed brick, tiled floors, and wood-paneled ceilings -- equally suited to a first date or a rowdy group dinner. Old-fashioned hanging lamps and beveled mirrors add warmth, and the white marble bar up front is arguably the best seat in the house. For starters, we tried the fegatini (chicken liver pâté with grape marmalade), which were excellent. The Carciofi alla Giudia (fried whole artichokes with fresh mint) are a quintessential Roman dish; don't skip them! The Insalata Mista (baby lettuce, almonds, ricotta salata, orange, and anchovy vinaigrette) is wonderfully flavorful and refreshing. The heart of the menu is the pinsa: pizza's ancient Roman predecessor, born centuries before Neapolitans ever thought to combine tomatoes and mozzarella. Kneaded into wonky ovals and historically topped with herbs, the flatbread was so central to Roman life that Virgil wove it into the Aeneid. At Camillo, chef Michele Baldacci makes his pinsa with a proprietary blend of rice, wheat, and soy flours, left to ferment for over 48 hours. The result is crunchier and chewier than a typical Neapolitan round (somewhere between Rome's thin crust style and focaccia-like pizza al taglio) with a slightly nutty flavor and a crust sturdy enough to handle a generous pile of toppings. We tried the Salsiccia e Broccoli (pork sausage, broccoli rabe, tomatoes, mozzarella): The sausage does a beautiful job of mellowing the bitterness of the rabe. I loved the thin, crispy crust. The menu also features the brilliant Romana pinsa, split down the middle: Half Amatriciana (spicy tomato sauce and pork jowl), half cacio e pepe (black pepper and sage). A clever way to pay homage to two of Rome's most iconic pasta dishes at once. For pasta, the Gnocchi alla Romana (sliced semolina gnocchi, tomatoes, parmigiano; add pork sausage for $2) are a winner. The fresh pappardelle with Coda alla Vaccinara (oxtail and beef cheeks braised with red wine, tomatoes, and cloves) is a dense, soul-satisfying Roman classic; the ragu clings to those wide, fresh noodles beautifully. If you're particularly hungry, for a main course try the Abbacchio alla Romana: a traditional Roman recipe of goat roasted with rosemary and white wine, served with polenta and Swiss chard. This unctuous dish is as flavorful as it is rich. If you prefer seafood, the Baccalà (fresh Icelandic wild cod roasted with tomatoes, olives, capers, mashed potatoes, and fresh oregano) is fantastic. For dessert, the Tiramisù is always a winner, but I found the Biddrina Gelato of amaretto and orange absolutely amazing. If you want to linger a little longer, the affogato (Italian espresso poured over vanilla ice cream) is a lovely way to end the night, especially with a shot of their house-made amari on the side. Finding a solid Italian restaurant in Brooklyn can be surprisingly hard -- especially when you're trying not to fall into the Williamsburg hype trap. I was genuinely excited when we discovered this spot, a little sister restaurant to a bar my husband already loves, and conveniently close by. We came with a friend and were ready to order broadly and really test the menu. Food: 4/5 We started with chili toast and arancini (RT). I'll be honest -- the arancini wasn't my favorite. It leaned very heavy on the cheese, and it felt a bit much appetite-wise right at the start. For mains, we ordered the gnocchi, oxtail pappardelle, and a pizza, which turned out to be the perfect amount of food for three people. The gnocchi was a standout -- surprisingly one of the best my husband has ever had, which says a lot coming from an Italian restaurant. I personally loved the oxtail pappardelle; rich, comforting, and well-balanced. The pizza is a generous size and definitely shareable. You could eat it yourself, but it's much better as a group order. For dessert, my husband and friend went all in with the olive oil cake and limoncello, both of which they loved. I tried the tiramisu, but it leaned too creamy for me and didn't have enough espresso flavor. I ended up switching to a strawberry sorbet, which was light, refreshing, and a nice way to end the meal. Service & Vibe: 5/5 The experience overall felt relaxed and enjoyable, a great place to bring friends and linger over food. Nothing felt rushed, and the atmosphere worked well for a long dinner with wine (or tea, in my case). All in all, our total came out to around $200, including wine, tea, and desserts. Not cheap, but honestly not bad for Brooklyn, and definitely not shocking by New York standards. I'd absolutely come back. The pasta and pizza were strong, and if you're a gnocchi lover, this is a must-order. Just be warned, some dishes are very rich, so maybe not ideal if you're trying to avoid heavier foods. When I say this was truly some of the best Italian food I've had in the city, I am not exaggerating. The gnocchi was incredible as was the cacio e pepe. They nail the texture everytime. I had such an excellent dining experience here last night for dinner. Fortunately this lovely Italian restaurant is local (walking distance). Once I arrived, I was seated right away. I was given the choice to dine at the bar or at a table; I grabbed the table. I ordered a glass of Rose as well as the Margherita Pinsa. Both items were delicious and perfect especially the Margherita Pinsa. I proceeded to get the Carbonara Pasta for my entrée; million out of 10!. I can see why this pasta option comes highly recommended. For dessert, I got the Pistachio Olive Cake. I love every bite of this cake. The waitress was sweet and attentive. We even had a discussion about the various menu options specifically the Lasagna which is a newly added menu option. this was my second time trying this local italian spot with an upscale fuel. i really enjoyed the cacio e pepe. the portion size was a bit on the smaller side, but it was a fresh pasta with a cheesy, peppery sauce that was cooked to perfection. i would definitely order this again. they also serve unique caribbean-inspired dishes with oxtail, which i haven't personally tried but i've heard great things about. the service was wonderful. we were frequently checked in on and i overall really enjoyed my experience. i made a reservation beforehand for a party of eight and the restaurant was fairly busy on a weekday evening so i would definitely recommend reserving beforehand. read more

If I were a newly-minted Crown Heights hipster who hadn't yet developed a taste for doubles, this would be my favorite neighborhood spot. That being said, I probably wouldn't make the trip here all the way from Williamsburg again. My favorites were the Jewish style fried artichokes, originating from the historic ghettos of Rome - perfectly textured. My mezcal negroni was also well done, and perhaps I would return for a drink and a bar snack. The zucchini blossoms were unfortunately very underseasoned, and I'm not sure why they needed to be encased in such a thick doughy coating when they're already served with focaccia. The pinsa was equally light on flavor. I liked the gnocchi dish just for uniqueness - honestly, it tasted like the matzoh ball parmigiana dish that previously lived only in my imagination. read more

Cozy authentic Italian place in PLG. They have a variety of spritzes and I tried the mirto one at our waiter's recommendation, which I enjoyed and found refreshing (kind of has a blackberry flavor to it). Fried artichoke appetizer was a little too oily but tasty overall and I liked the addition of mint. I liked the pinsa; the dough was less dense than pizza dough tends to be and the flavors were good. Tried the paccheri amatriciana pasta, which was slightly too salty and I wasn't a fan of the guanciale (basically just chunks of fat), but otherwise tasty. I think dessert might've been the highlight. Affogato was delicious-- simple, no frills, traditional, just high quality espresso and gelato. read more

If I could summarize my dining experience at Camillo in one word, it would be: fan-friggin-tastic. We reserved a table online, and the process was a breeze. Even though we were a little early, they gladly welcomed us and made accommodations to seat us promptly. We started off with a wild mushroom pizza (Funghi), and that was a crowd pleaser. The salad (Insalata Mista), not so much. The main dishes were 'chef kiss'. Several people ordered the oxtail pasta (Coda alla Vaccinara), which they enjoyed once they realized it was a braised oxtail sauce rather than actual whole pieces of oxtail.I loved my order, the Abbacchio alla Romana. The goat was fall-off-the-bone delicious. I'm craving it as I write this. This is a can't-miss dish. I promise you. The service was friendly and engaging. We stopped by for dinner came in & were seated right away. Drinks to start Paradiso & Rosemary spritz , good drinks nice taste had a nice buzz by the time we left. On the Appetizers we tried the Zucchini blossom flowers this was not what we thought but it was good, nice tasting combo.. Margherita pizza was a good appetizer for us to share. On the Pasta Gnocchi allá Romana was not what I expected? tasted more on the mash potato side versus a gnocchi but it was not bad. The Cacio e Pepe & Carbonara pastas were both good. Asparagi & Ricotta pizza was a surprised, only because of the interstitial g combo but it was very tasty. Nice looking place is not crazy big inside, nice & dimly lit. Service started off a bit slow they acknowledge when we sat down but took them a bit of time to actually get our order. Nice atmosphere, laid back service was good once they got the ball rolling. Tony and I hit up Camillo recently ahead of a concert at Kings Theatre. What a treat this place was. I would definitely recommended it. Here are a few highlights: A+ for the custom Negroni cocktails! Definitely get one of these. Of course, they feature the traditional recipe Negroni, but their exotic iterations on this classic drink are pretty awesome! OMG for the fried artichoke. No words for how good these are (look at mine and other reviewers' photos). Yummy all around for the pasta dishes! I'd say yo likely can't go wrong with any of these. The only dish that was "just okay" for us was the Baccalà-- a Alaskan cod with roasted with tomatoes, olives, capers, mashed potatoes & fresh oregano. The fish portion was a bit small, and the dish just wasn't mouthwatering like everything else we tried. As for the atmosphere at Camilo, the interior appears to be mostly new construction with a modern Italian cafe sensibility. It is definitely super inviting. The staff are also first rate--that is, they are all very friendly, knowledgeable about the food and drink selections, and quick to accommodate. read more

I'm lucky to have this quaint Italian (Roman-style) restaurant in Prospect Lefferts Garden amongst these Caribbean restaurants. The food is so fresh. I've been here twice. I recommend getting pinsa/pizza here. Pictured here are the Salsiccia & Broccolini (pork sausage, broccolini rabe, tomato, mozzarella and Bufala & Proscuitto. The proscuitto pizza was good and made me feel like I'm eating healthy. This pizza can easily be shared among two people or one person with leftovers. The crust is light and slightly crispy. We also ordered the Fresh pappardelle pasta made oxtail & beef cheeks braised with red wine, tomatoes & cloves. I enjoyed the Camilo board/charcuterie board and my Negroni. WOW! We found this restaurant from a review on Tik Tok. We were going to go somewhere else for dinner but they had us n the review!! We loved the service and the full on Italian accents most of the wait staff had. Being from Florida we have no good Italian restaurants. I do travel all around the country and get disappointed with most Italian restaurants because I believe I can make it better at home. I ended up coming here twice the week I was staying and both times everything was above standards for me. The pasta was fresh the sauce was perfectly seasoned. I rarely give five stars. This place, I would give six if I could. We showed up on a Sunday sans reservations (you really should book them if you can) and got a table. I really wanted a Man o War and the fabulous bartender made me a Paper Plane (similar. not the same but NOT disappointed in the slightest!) We shared the insalata mista and the mozzarella di bufala and could not have been more pleased. Both were perfect after having 90-minute massages and being out in the muggy humidity and drizzling weather. Neither were so heavy that we thought we wouldn't eat our main dishes. I had the cacio e pepe and she had the vegetarian gnocchi alla Romana (which could have been shared three ways because it was so dense, but so good) and we each took rest of our meals home because we knew we wanted to split a piece of their pistachio olive oil cake. This piece of cake was so small yet so dense, there was no way one person should eat it in one sitting! It is chilled and does not skimp on flavor or texture of the Italian pistachio. Love, love, LOVE this place!!! I live in the neighborhood and I've always walked bast this quaint little restaurant. A couple of months ago, my husband and I decided to give it a try. Our first thought was, WHY DIDN'T WE DO THIS SOONER!!!. The food is very tasty and the vibe is so laid back. Our waiter and also bartender, Fernando is a true gem. Each time we come, we are always greeted by a warm smile and friendly hellos by him. Fernando is definitely a BEAST at this place! I've watched him mix drinks, take orders, and bring out food in a timely matter all by himself... and yet still takes the time to speak with the patrons. Thus far, I enjoyed the pastas (cacio y pepe is my fave), insalata, a few of their pizzas. The drinks are always good and Fernando has no issues whipping up a concoction on the fly. Camillo used to be one of our favorite places to eat in Brooklyn. We would frequent it several times a month. A few months ago they made some changes to their menu and although all their food is great they got rid of our three favorite things. They used to have a white lasagna, a chicken and potato plate and a dessert that was ice cream with cream inside that they no longer offer. We have gone a few times since but it just hasn't been the same. From a service perspective the staff is always kind and attentive. The restaurant is clean. read more

Camillo feels like the really reliable neighborhood haunt where good memories are made. It feels simultaneously upscale and breezy, cozy and airy. Pre-covid you could hear the cacophonous din of glasses clinking, servers shuffling about, and postprandial conversation being had. These sounds would make the perfect "restaurant ambience" playlist on Spotify. You can't really replicate the same ambient sounds with outdoor dining, but outdoor dining can have its own soothing restaurant noise, particularly on this (sometimes) quiet stretch of eateries on Nostrand Avenue. I was fortunate to book one of their 4 popular outdoor tables on a recent weeknight. Everything we had here was delicious, but I think their appetizers might be their strongest section. The fried artichokes were crispy and light, served in perfect sized florets. The eggplant parmigiana was my favorite dish of the night, with nice layers of breaded eggplant, cheese, and sauce. I have made parmigiana many times at home and it never tastes nearly as good as Camillo's parmigiana. The pinsas are sizeable and great for sharing, each with a nice topping to bread ratio, and really amazing dough. The Paccheri Amatriciana, which is essentially a pork jowl pappardelle came with ribbons of perfectly al dente pasta that was a nice vehicle for the really flavorful sauce. The rosemary spritz was a well crafted cocktail, and the sprig of rosemary was a nice aromatic for my summer drink. Our food came out really quickly and I appreciated the kindness of our server and the efficiency of the kitchen. Tables were well spaced out and the spotlight above the restaurant's signage ensured that our tables had cozy lighting and we could still see what was on our table long after the sun had set. I see that they're open again for indoor dining at 25% capacity now, with newly installed HVAC filters and a recommendation on their website to dress in layers since they keep their door open throughout the evening to ensure good airflow, so you can continue to make good memories at Camillo with the same restaurant ambience of pre-covid days that we all crave so much. read more

I am going to start by saying while I didn't love my dinner at Camillo, I will definitely try it again. The good-- the cocktails and pizza. Pizzas are "roman style" thin crusted, and good for a two person share appetizer or a solo entree. The cocktails were very good. I think for the neighborhood, the bar is well priced but the drinks are a bit on the smaller end. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. The not so good-- I ordered the eggplant as a main course, and that was a mistake. Unfortunately the eggplant was flavorless, burnt on the edges, and very limited on the "parmigiana". The cacio de Pepe was a bit soft and soggy. The inside is very small and I would recommend a reservation. This is not what I would classify as "good for groups" or "good for kids". This is more of a lowkey date or small quiet catch up. Planning another visit I would like to try two of the other appetizers and definitely would go for a happy hour. read more

The food here is really, really top notch. For appetizers, we had the fried artichokes, the anchovies, and the eggplant--they were all really flavorful and prepared perfectly. We finished the meal by sharing a perfect dessert - their homemade chocolate tartufo. My wife said it was the best tartufo she's ever had. I'll end by saying the service was excellent and the place was charming and anytime during a dining experience that my wife starts making comparisons to the Sunday dinners of her youth with her Italian grandmother, I know the food is authentic and hitting the mark. Great restaurant will definitely be returning! Came here on recommendation of a friend who frequents this place. Lovely ambiance one you walk in; Italian décor and flooring with modern and classic trendy hits playing in the background. Service was very nice, wait staff was friendly and attentive. The food and drink were very well done! The table split the anchovy bread and butter, as well as a salad I would like to recreate at home. And for my main had lasagna which did everything it needed to do! Perfect portions and plating was very cute. It was very filling and wonderful. To top it off I had two LARGE glasses of chilled white wine which was great. Nice price for everything I had, and it's just a great place to have a meal. I really enjoyed my dinner at Camillo. I pass this restaurant all the time, and finally got the chance to stop by. It's super cozy and welcoming! I sat by the bar and the bartender was great. I came around 6 PM, but note that this place does get very busy on the weekends. I was lucky enough to grab a seat by the bar, but if you arrive after 6 make sure to make a reservation or prepare to wait. The food was just as good as the service I received. I started off with the buffalo mozzarella dish. SO GOOD! It came with sweet peppers and a pickled veg. The pickled veg was my favorite. For my entree I ordered the pappardelle with braised oxtail. This is also very delicious. The portion size is on the smaller end, but still worth it in my opinion. I also opted to get a side of broccoli rabe, which is enough for 2 people. For dessert I ordered the olive oil cake, which was just okay. Now that the good stuff is out the way, Camillo is definitely the definition of gentrification in Brooklyn. PLG is a melting pot of different cultures and ethnic groups, so I was a bit disappointed when I walked in to see the restaurant filled with hipster Brooklyn transplants, and not so many of the local people who are originally from the area. read more

Came for dinner with a friend and wasn't super impressed with the food. It may have been what we ordered and in fairness the waiter said the pizza we ordered wasn't his favorite but still everything was just fine. We got the Olive Miste to start which was nice, then shared the Amatriciana and Coda alla Vacinara pasta. The pizza wasn't amazing so in hindsight we should have listened to the waiter but the crust they have is great so I would definitely return and try another kind. The pasta was also a disappointment, not a whole lot of flavor and pretty dry. One thing I will say is the drinks were fantastic! The Rosemary Spritz was so unique and delicious and their Prosecco on tap was lovely! Overall I would definitely go again, it's an adorable spot with really friendly staff, I would just try something different! Update: Came back here recently and had to change my review from 4 to 5 stars! As I thought I just ordered wrong the first time I went, this time everything we had was spectacular! Both times I've gone it's been on a weekday and have gotten a table no problem. The staff is so nice, helpful and attentive but not overbearing at all. I of course got the Rosemary Spritz again because it's awesome but also tried their Aperol spritz this time which is always great. For food we shared the Carciofi alla Giuria to start per someone's recommendation; it was a little pricey but so so worth it, the artichokes were perfectly cooked and seasoned well, absolutely delicious. Then for dinner we shared the Felino Pinsa which was also fantastic. Their crust is so light and has a wonderful flavor, it elevated an already great pizza. Good and service are amazing at Camillo. Make a reservation because it fills up quickly and we've had a couple of occasions where we were turned away for dinner. You can't go wrong with cacio e pepe or quite frankly any of their pizzas, the Negronis are amazing, and we love the artichoke appetizer. read more
