We haven't been here in a couple of years except for pizza. The last couple of times we'd been here for dinner we were disappointed. Last night, we decided to try again. Sadly, we won't be returning for dinner, only to pick up pizza. We started out pleasantly surprised with our fried calamari. It came out hot and crunchy, no chewy pieces at all. You can't go wrong with the pasta fagiole soup or the house salad with the house balsamic dressing. Unfortunately, both of our entrees were over seasoned with salt. We remembered this is why we stopped coming here. My veal was a bit chewy and very average. My husband didn't care for the grouper. It was a special and he didn't ask how much it was and it was over $40 for a piece of over salted fish. We do really like the pizza here so we will come back for that. But not on a Friday night when the take out area becomes total chaos. read more

Only had the opportunity to try the pizza during my lunch hour. I tired the margarita Sicilian pizza and it was extremely good. The pasta sauce was very fresh and the bread was flaky and crispy. This was one of the best slices of pizza I've had in THIS area. The environment is clean, the service is fast and friendly. I would like to try their lunch specials and pasta dishes in the future. They also honored the free cannoli I received for checking in (that was also tasty). I would recommend this place to anyone in the area looking for a fresh and tasty bite. Side note: don't let the long lines during lunch time deter you from eating as they are very quick with getting everyone's order in and out. Been here numerous times since and have tried several different items off the menu from the penne vodka to the pesto shrimp..everything is simply delicious. I love this place. Casual but with an upscale feel, for pizza, sandwiches,etc for lunch (or dinner) and dining room/ outdoor dining for more of a dining experience with the best Italian dishes. Delicious and plentiful. Cannoli desserts are outstanding as well. Service is very attentive . Our waiter tonight was Diego, who ensured we had a real nice experience. We've been going here for many years and I've enjoyed the food every time. This time we came as a group with a few kids. We ordered 2 full pizzas then stayed outside bec it was a nice afternoon. There's this old guy who I see here always who I guess is connected with the place but he doesn't do anything. He came to us and complained that the kids were too loud, we're outside and kids were eating while talking. They weren't running or bothering anybody, we were all seated enjoying the food and talking n laughing with the kids. How dare this guy told us to shut up and be quiet on a public place. If they don't want noises then don't give customers the option to eat outside. That old guy just ruined our meal and there were 4 families during that and we all promised not to visit the place again. Goodbye!!! read more

This is my go to spot for pizza and Italian takeout when I am back home at my parents. So really I guess that means it's my parents go to take out pizza spot... but I get the reap the benefits of good food without it hurting my wallet. With that being said, the price is right here you get what you pay for and more. The Brooklyn pie is a must have here- it's my favorite, wish I could have the crust on that on all their pies. They also have great takeout dishes, all your Italian classics. Comes with bread and side salad. Also have to comment on how great the staff is always mobbed in there but they're continuously friendly. Wanted to give this place 5 stars because we had such a great time here and loved the food. Came with a big party for a special event. The Pennington location is in a nicer strip mall. We were seated outside where there are nice tables with umbrellas and a fountain in the middle of the space. They bring out complimentary bread which was hot and homemade along with a delicious dipping sauce. Unsure what the sauce was but it was yummy! We ordered 5 appetizers, 3 kids meals and 7 adult meals. We got fried calamari, rustica, zucchini flowers, chicken parm, vodka rig with chicken, chicken picatta and a delicious pasta dish with mushrooms. We also had two desserts come out since we were celebrating birthdays. All the dishes were nice big portions and all were so good! Service was decent. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the prices on the menu definitely weren't accurate. We ended up paying a total of around $400 after tip. All in all this is a great place for authentic Italian food and I'll definitely be returning. Hopefully by then tbe menu prices will be accurate and the specials will have prices listed. read more

The second best, out of at least a hundred I've tried and can somewhat recall, was Pennington's Piccolo Trattoria just this week. Great Italian food. It is our Go To restaurant. Talked with a woman from Utah the other day. She and her husband took an Uber to the restaurant. However, they were closed. The owner told them that he would personally make them something to eat, provided them a bottle of wine and drove them back to their hotel. Piccolos was a place I could take my friends when I first got my drivers licenses and is a place I can take my son on a lunch date! This spot is really close to the office, so I've been there a few times over the years for a quick lunch that's pretty wallet-friendly. I'm not usually big on pizza, but I do enjoy the pizza here. They have different flavors available by the slice, which they'll heat up to order. The pizza is then served on aluminum trays, which is a nice touch. In particular, I really enjoy their margherita! The prices are also very affordable. While I don't think they have the prices posted up anywhere, lunch for two, with about two slices each, is usually under $15. I've only been to the 'casual cafe' side of Piccolo's, and it's honestly just a solidly average NJ pizza spot. They've got the whole system down: pies on a clear window display, slices thrown into ovens to order, spices and seasonings on a self-serve table at the front, and pizza served hot on a tin-like plate. It's my go-to when I'm at school, which is just down the road, for a quick grab-and-go snack. I usually stick to getting a penne vodka pizza or a plain slice, but their garlic knots are also pretty irresistible. My only qualm is that sometimes, it can be slow. On some visits I can be waiting for up to ten minutes just to get a slice of pizza. There's usually two people to expedite the whole ordering process using an assembly line-like ordering system (one who gets your pizza of choice and throws it in the oven, and one who rings you up), which is designed to be efficient. This place reminds me of home..college life home that is. As a TCNJ alumni, I came back to revisit my roots. Less than a 10 minute drive from the campus, it's a wonderful place to either grab a slice of pizza or dine out with the family. True, when I went to TCNJ we didn't have the town campus, but I still think it's worth the drive. During my most recent visit in December, I sat on the dining side with a group of 5. We made a reservation in advance and were sat without a problem. The restaurant is BYOB and there is a liquor store in the same complex if you forgot to bring your wine (or perhaps need more?). While there is no denying the legitimacy of their amazing pizza slices, it's worth giving their other menu options a try as well. I had the eggplant parm with penne pasta, and there was plenty to take home afterwards. If you check-in on the Yelp app, they offer you a free cannoli! Get the cannoli, even if the special expires and/or you're full to the brim. It's big enough for 2 people to share, and you won't regret it. read more

I visited Picolo last week for lunch with a friend. I've always been satisfied but never blown away by the food here. Sorry, but I was really disappointed this time. I ordered the cedar pesto salmon and it came with a side of spinach. Should be a no brained, right? How hard is it to cook these? My fish was dry and very bland, I forced myself to eat 1/3 of it. The spinach was sitting in a well of oil. The large portion of spinach didn't make it taste any better. The rolls that came with the meal were on the hard side. The 2 stars are for the house salad which was nice and the waitstaff who were pleasant and available until it was time to get the check, I had to go looking for him. I think they did pretty well considering we came in on their "black Friday" (Valentine's Day.) My wife and I kept things simple. Started by sharing calamari, which came in a fairly generous portion. It was accompanied by tasty marinara sauce, but its breading was not crisp, was somewhat oily, and lacked seasoning. Finally, the hot cherry pepper pieces that were (for me) a big reason I ordered their version of this dish, were few and far between. There were maybe 5 or 6 little pieces (not peppers, pieces) on the whole plate. We had shown up for an early seating, like 6pm, so I doubt that this was due to running out of things under the crush of above-average traffic. Our salads were weak but acceptable. Nondescript greens, too much shredded carrot and cucumber for our taste, with blue cheese dressing that I'd prefer had been Ken's. Things got better. My apologies to the Yelp Nazis (no, not Yelp - some users who are merciless in their expectations of details - lighten up, I'm not a paid reviewer!) but I did not taste my wife's dish, so I can only report that it was chicken and shrimp in champagne tarragon sauce, she liked it quite a lot, and had to bring half home because the portion was (like the calamari) generous. My meal, veal marsala, was quite delicious. It was served on the really thin spaghetti (capellini?), was made with quality veal, with both pasta and meat cooked properly, and was served with sauce that was reduced *just right* so that it was neither too thick nor too thin and really great mushrooms. It was a delight, and again, good size - I actually left some pasta on the plate. Server, Zack (Zach?) was friendly and efficient. They did a great job for such a busy holiday. Oh, and they're BYOB in case this is important (and there's a decent wine and liquor (and beer) store down the row in the strip mall where they're located.) Five stars if they can come up with a not-so-lame salad and/or make the calamari yummy. read more
