Best deli on the island, hands down. The food was delicious and the staff was friendly. My only complaints are that some of their sandwiches are a bit pricey, and also that the restaurant itself isn't the best in terms of sitting in and eating, as there are lots of tables in a small space. You'll have people standing on top of you, or will have a butt or other areas in your face as you're eating. Also...cash only. That's REALLY annoying. Its 2015. Pickles is a totally legit deli in Middletown, RI. Standard deli fare, with some interesting specials. The sandwiches are pretty large, and made fresh to order. I got the spring balsamic chicken sandwich, which had a tangy sauce and roasted red peppers, with gruyere. Ate here with my wife today for the first time. She ordered the Mediterranean wrap, and she got diarrhea immediately and was sick all day. I ordered the Vegetarian pita pocket. I took it to go and when i went to eat it at the beach, i was pissed at how they prepared it. The pita was paper thin with all these whole vegetables inside. I barely touched it when it fell apart. There was no way to eat the sandwich other than to pick up the vegetables with my hands. They couldnt figure out to chop the vegetables and serve them in a thicker pita pocket? I had a bad feeling when i looked in the back of the restaurant and saw a group of unenthusiastic young people making the sandwiches with a " Id rather be hanging with my friends" look on their face. read more

I stopped in for lunch with a couple of co-workers while on our lunch break from visiting NAPS. One of other co-workers had been here and liked it. It was a 15 minute ride but very worth it. I ordered a wrap off the specialty menu that included turkey and cranberry salsa. It was very tasty with a slight hint of some heat. The wrap itself was stretched to capacity with the meat. Although they offered various pasta salads as a side, I opted for the many varieties of potato chips they offered. My co-worker had the Roast Beef Supreme which was very impressive looking and from what I heard, tasty. There is a nice amount of seating if you decide to eat in. The prices were very reasonable for the size and quality of the meal. The service was friendly and welcoming to us. Next time I'm in the area, I'll be back. read more

Still the best on the island! I had the jalapeno bacon BLT special last week, ridiculously good. The best indicator of a good business is regular customers and referrals. Lisa and her staff are extremely courteous and friendly, they memorize regular customer's favorites, they ask about their day, family, dog, etc. It like the show Cheers, when everyone yells, "NORM" when he walks in the bar, it makes you feel good to go there. I felt compelled to review again after reading Amanda S' review to assure all the Yelp readers that this is, "one of those people." You all know what I mean. She only writes a review when it's negative. I was actually there and in line when this all happened. She was irritated right off the bat that there was an ATM charge, um, obviously! Pickles does not charge the fee but she acted like they did. Amanda S. was the rude, condescending one. The owner, Lisa, already had made her sandwich when she cancelled her order and she didn't even say a thing about that. She also said, "Thank you and have a good day" as Amanda S. walked out. We, as in all the regular customers, got a chuckle after Amanda S left. Pickles is better off without her attitude and business in my opinion, bu bye! read more

I'm surprised with some of the so-so reviews, since Pickle's sandwiches are the bomb. Perhaps they changed their recipes, since the first time I tried them was about 6 months ago. I'm sure it depends on the sandwich, but for the ones that I've tried, they are not only the best sandwiches on the Island - but I think the best I've ever had. I just enjoyed a turkey burger wrap, it is warm and just enough spice. You have to eat the sandwiches right away though, since they do tend to be a little oily. It was $6.50 so I'm not sure why one reviewer thought it was overpriced. The sandwich is huge and made with fresh ingredients. Also, one reviewer faulted them only accepting cash. I think all/most of their items are below $10, so I don't think people realize how expensive it is to accept cards. For me, I'd rather keep the costs low, quality high and bring my seven bucks. read more

I'm new to Middletown and know virtually nothing around here other than the usual local haunts. Someone recommended Pickles and we went on a mid-afternoon when the place was practically empty. The staff were quirky and funny and quite friendly. I ordered the Reuben, not expecting anything impressive out of a local deli in RI, and I was wrong. It was quite delicious. The layout is unassuming yet inviting, not trying to overwhelm. Simple tables and chairs, simple yet charming decor, very local establishment flavor to it all. I stopped in the other day and got a #1, the turkey club on a croissant, potato salad, and cole slaw. And an oatmeal raisin cookie. The woman behind the counter was very friendly. I super loved the cole slaw. I think sides are the big hit or miss things at delis. You find a lot of bland stuff. I would go back just for the cole slaw. The dill potato salad was ok but not quite for me. I give them credit for at least trying to add some flavor to it but it was not balanced well. Daves Marketplace makes the best dill potato salad. The sandwich was fine but I am wondering why they don't use the house roasted turkey on all their turkey sandwiches instead of just the one? This was deli turkey and it was fine but not special. If you are making turkey anyway, it would be better with the house made turkey. The cookie was a bit crispy for my taste. I like my oatmeal cookies to be soft. Lisa makes a heck of a sand which. We ordered the thanksgiving turkey and it was the closest to a Dagwood sand which I had ever gotten. I actually ate one half for lunch and the other for dinner. You've followed the rainbow and Pickles is the pot of gold at the end. 5MILLION stars goes to the staff made up of the most wonderful humans with the most wonderful attitude. They smile, joke around, make suggestions all while remaining professional and pleasant. They are the real reason people come back. The food is incredible too don't get me wrong, but the people behind the counter are also stars and make this place so desirable. I've been there a few dozen times and they know my order, my name, and sometimes throw a surprise in my to-go bag. The first time I saw a surprise cookie i nearly burst into happiness tears. THEY CARE ABOUT ME THEY REALLY CARE. Those little things, man. They really get me. My go-to lunch is the Jaws. A melt in your mouth tuna salad with thinly sliced tomato, soft melty cheese, stuffed inside a soft warm syrian pocket. It's just... perfection. I'm really into tuna salad and Pickles truly makes the best. I've also been working my way through all the soups. I usually go with cheddar broccoli, followed by italian wedding. Our hotel recommended this place to us when we said we were craving bagels and coffee during our last stay in April. I think this place is great. It originally caught my eye when I was driving by because I simply love pickles. I ended up going in one day to realize what a hidden gem this is. First time actual customer at this location as my company orders lunch from them frequently. I decided I would give them a try on my own since I seem to have liked what they had. I called ahead with my order went down to pick it up handed the girl my card when she then explained they didn't take cards but there was a ATM in the back. I was already a little annoyed since they should have told me on the phone that they are cash and check only location. I then decided to go to the ATM in the back which was absolutely filthy and take $20 out when I realized there was a $2.50 charge. Now I was already paying $13 and change for a sandwich and a cookie and a drink so adding another $2.50 to this seemed a little bit much and I decided it was too much to pay for a lunch. I went to the counter and I said unfortunately I'm going to have to cancel my order due to not knowing that they were cash only. The woman said if I had a check I could write a check which I did not. I then proceeded to say that you should tell people on the phone that your cash only. The women saidit would be impossible for them to tell every customer they were cash only. I can't imagine how hard this would be to say just those words before hanging up the phone, but anyway She then proceeds with an attitude to tell me they've always been cash which I explained it was my first time at this location. I then started to walk away when she condescendingly and with an attitude told me thank you have a nice day bye bye. I stated it was bad business practices and I stand by it. I can't imagine how you can build a business when you treat your first time customers this way. What happened to being friendly and courteous to customers?
